The Synopsis of By Love Undone

By Suzzane Enoch

The story tells about a love between a noble and a pauper. Miss Madeleine Willits called Maddie had been working for Mr. Malcolm Bancroft, who was both the owner of an estate in Somerset called Langley Hall and one of the noblemen in London society, for four years. Therefore, Mr. Malcolm treated Maddie like her own daughter. In a beautiful day, Maddie was in a beautiful garden of the Malcolms house busily snipping blooms of the Lord Penzance when the nice disaster came to Langley. It was a missive coming from Mr. Lewis, a duke and a brother of Mr. Malcolms. The letter said that Mr Lewis would help his brother to direct the household due to his ailment, and he also said that he would send Quinlan Ulysses Bancroft, The Marquis of Warefield and his beloved son, to Somerset soon. Mr. Malcolm was so happy even though he had a fight with the duke. Then, Mr. Malcolm asked Mrs. Iddings, his chef, to purchase vegetable and spread the word. It made all people in Somerset excited, but not Maddie. She felt both angry, jealous, and afraid because of Quinlans qualifications and personalities; on the other hand, Mrs. Fowler, a folk in the country, felt so and so happy on Quinlans imminent arrival for she had two young daughters who were always ready to sway his interest. In the other place, Quinlan was sitting in his comfortable coach running along the uncomfortable road to Langley. He felt annoyed so much due to it. He went to this country with Claymore, his beloved bird. Finally he reached the estate, and all people of Langley were ready to welcome him himself in front of Langleys double front doors. All servants of the estate were curious about how the Marquis of Warefield looks like. Maddie, wearing pink and white muslin skirt and her last years yellow spring bonnet on her head, stood among the other servants. She thought that he would look like such other noblemen as fat, pig-eyed, and pompous dandies, yet she had a wrong thought. When Quinlan came out of the dark coach, all people were surprised. He was really handsome, and he also had an athletic figure. The Marquis of Warefield was not fat, nor pig-eyed, and though his attire was surely the very latest style. Maddie could certainly not call him a dandy. After coming out of the very nice carriage, Quinlan, accompanied by Maddie, walked towards Mr. Malcolms bedchamber. In the bedchamber, Quinlan and Mr. Malcolm had a conversation. In the conversation, Quinlan told and assured his uncle that Mr. Lewis, his father, had no-

intention of turning Mr. Malcolm and his staff. Quinlan added that he just wanted to help him to direct the household until Mr. Malcolm recovered from his ailment. After that, Quinlan asked Maddie to help him to find the account ledgers of Langley Hall. Maddie then led him to a small-tidy office and took a stack of ledgers for him. After getting the ledgers, Quinlan sat at the desk where Maddie got the ledgers and asked her to take him a cup of tea while he was opening the first page of one of the ledgers. Maddie nodded and walked to the door. Before she reached the office door, Quinlan called her again. He asked Maddie not to say my lord many times during their conversation. He added that one or two my lords were enough for per conversation. Due to the suggestion, Maddies sensuous lips curved in a small smile for the first time. The next morning Quinlan, who was accompanied by Maddie, was ready to inspect the tenants of the fields belonging to Langley Hall and to see Miss Marguerite for her help so a tenant war can be avoided. During their inspection in the fields, Quin and Maddie had a warm conversation. Quin seemed to attempt to attract Maddies attention by teasing her, but Maddie just took no notice on him. Quinlan not only teased her but also tried hard to show her that he was capable by stepping his legs into the muddy field to catch a running pig, but suddenly he slipped on the mud. Water cascaded off his fine rust riding coat and filled his beautiful Hessian boots. After that accident, he tried to dry himself. Then, the flirtatious Fowlers girls came to them and disturbed them. They were Sally and Lydia. Both of them made a great effort to get the Marquiss attention without caring about Quinlans feeling: He really felt annoyed and disturbed due to the wild girls. Lydia invited him to come Renden Hall, the Fowlers estate, to dry his clothes. Then, Sally also persuaded him to visit Renden Hall for their profesional cook had made a very delicious apple tart. Quinlan did not seem to be interested in their invitation. The worse, Sally kept trying hard for his attention. She begged Quinlan to be invited to come to Langley Hall for tea. It made Quinlan feel more disturbed, but suddenly Maddie helped the Fowlers girls and made the Marquis agree to be invited to Renden Hall. In the evening, Maddie and Mr. Malcolm had a private conversation. Maddie told Mr. Malcolm that she could not bear her hatred to the Marquis of Warefield, but Mr. Malcolm begged her to be more patient and not to make his nephew to be killed in her hands because she made fun on Quinlan over her hatred. During the private conversation, Quinlan suddenly came to the room and disturbed them. Finally, all of

them went to the dining room for diner. While Mr. Malcolm was eating his meal, he asked his nephew about his planning for tomorrow morning. Both Quinlan and Maddie would go to the field to help the farmers to till the soil and visit Renden Hall for luncheon. Quinlan directly answered that everything would be fine. The next day, in the beautiful morning, Maddie and her handsome lord went to the field for tilling. Everything ran well because Maddie had organized them. After several times, Quinlan and Maddie went home to prepare themselves for the Fowlers invitation. After having prepared themselves, both of them left together for Renden Hall by a carriage. Along the road to the Fowlers house, Quinlan asked Maddie about her identity. He asked her where she had worked for before she worked for his uncle. Maddie felt frustrated and afraid due to the irritated question. She just answered him that she had worked as a governess in several households, but Quinlan did not seem to believe her statement. After that, they reached the Fowlers house. There, the Fowlers was standing in a line to welcome the Marquis of Warefield. Then, all of them stepped into the house. Inside the house, they enjoyed their meal and made an informal conversation. The Fowlers were attempting to get the young lords attention, but they got nothing. The young handsome lord of Warefield just took all of his notice to an ordinary girl sitting near the window of the Fowlers house and glancing out the window, Miss Maddie Willits. Quinlan walked towards her and asked for her heart, but Maddie answered it coldly. Maddie could not think clearly for she was so afraid if the Marquis would know who she was. The time ran so fast, and both Quinlan and Maddie ended their visit. They left for Langley Hall together by the carriage. In Langley Hall, Quinlan felt so disturbed due to his nobility, his feeling, and his uncles lady. He intended to be the man of his own uncles ladys. It made him both sad and confuse. Then, Garret, the butler of Langley Hall, came to Quinlan and gave him a missive coming from Eloise Stokesley, Quinlans engaged girl who had been known by him for twenty-three-year. The missive said that Eloise, the duchees of Stafford Green, felt heartbroken after she had known that Quinlan, her beloved man, had been banished to Somerset. Besides that, she also missed him and hoped to see him in Stafford Green, as they had planned. After reading the missive and keeping it safe on his dressing table, he went to the rose garden near the house. He unexpectedly found his uncle and Maddie in the beautiful garden busily discussing about Maddies master health and his nephews

visiting. During their conversation, Quinlan suddenly came towards them to disturb, but Maddie left them alone for another business as soon as she could. Quinlan walked behind his uncles wheeled chair round the rose garden together. Quinlan and Mr. Malcolm then told each other about John Ramsey and Rafe. John Ramsey was Quinlans old friend. They played together several years ago when Quinlan came to Langley Hall with Lord Lewis, his beloved father. Then, Raffael Brancroft, called as Rafe, was Quinlans younger brother. He was good-looking, but quiet naughty. He was the only one who always rode Quinlans beloved horse without Quins permission. The next morning, Quinlan wrote Eloise a letter. He said to Eloise that he would stay in Somerset longer that their plan. Then, he asked Garret to post the letter. After that, Quinlan went out to look for Maddie. He found her in the potting shed. There, Quinlan asked her why she hated him. Maddie just told him that she felt so sad to hear that he had come to Somerset because of his father order to turn his own uncle, but Quinlan protested that her statement was wrong. He went to the county just in order to help his uncle to direct the household. Maddie came back to the house and got into her bedchamber. She stood near the window of her chamber seeing Quinlan who was in the rose garden. Suddenly Quinlan walked towards Maddie with a white rose in one hand. He reached her and asked her to be his escord, but she said nothing. Then, the Marquis walked out of the bedchamber for planting in the garden. In the afternoon, Maddie stood in front of her mirror busily preparing herself for the Fowlers ball. She wore the white hair ribbon lent by Mrs. Hodges, the housekeeper of Mr. Malcolms house. After finishing preparing herself, she walked downstairs behind Mr. Malcolm and Garret. In the first floor of the house, both Maddie, Mr. Malcolm, and Garret were waiting for Quinlan. After Quinlan was ready to leave, they went to the Fowlers house together. It did not take them a long time to reach Renden Hall. Mrs. Fowler was ready to welcome the Bancrofts in front of the front door of Renden Hall. Both Mrs. Fowler and the Bancrofts walked into the big beautiful house together. There, all people were enjoying themselves: Dancing, Listening to the orchestra, and so on. Quinlan invited Maddie to be his partner for dancing, and she agreed. They were dancing beautifully, but Quinlan suddenly kissed her while dancing. All people saw what the handsome Marquis had just done, and it was a scandal. It made Mr. Malcolm got angry to Quinlan.

In Langley Hall, Quinland and his uncle made a squirel in Mr. Malcolms bedchamber. During their fight, Mr. Malcolm told his nephew Maddies identity. He told the lord Warefield that Maddie was the oldest daughter of Viscount Halverston. She ran away from her own house. Mr. Malcolm felt so afraid if this scandal would make Maddie be rejected by London Society. Then, Maddie came into the master bedchamber to say good bye to her employer, but Mr. Malcolm begged her not to leave. He had her not to run away anymore. Finally, The Bancrofts made a plan to save the young lady. Mr. Malcolm ordered Quinlan to bring her home. There, he could asked his father, Lord Lewis, for his help to accept her. Mr. Malcolm told both Quinlan and Maddie that Maddie would have no troubles everywhere in London if Quinlans father accepted her. Then, both Quinlan and Maddie prepared themselves for Highbarrow Castle as soon as they could. The next morning, they went to Quinlans house in London by a carriage with two drivers and two footmen. It seemed to be a long-time-journey for them. In the afternoon, they finally reached the beautiful castle. After that, Maddie and Quinlan walked towards a drawing room where Quinlans father and Quinlans mother were inside sitting together. At first, Mr. Lewis welcomed both of them, but he really got so angry when he heard his sons explanation about the scandal. The duke did not seemed to be able to accept Maddie to be one of his family, but not lady Victoria, Quinlan beloved mother. She promised his beloved son to persuade his father so he would accept the young lady from Langley. It was because Victoria knew his beloved sons feeling: Quinlan fell in love with the ordinary girl, and so did the young lady. In London, Maddie could visit such some famous places that she had only heard about as Hyde Park, Bond Street, and the dark Tower of London. Besides that, she also visited the Willits house. She, accompanied by Mary, one of the Bancrofts houses servants, went there to see both Lord and Lady Halverston and her beloved sisters, Miss Polly and Miss Claire. Lady Halverston, Maddies beloved mother, welcomed Maddie warmly while Miss Claire begged her mother to be allowed to possess the old bedchamber belonging to Maddie. Lady Halverston rejected her naughty daugters request coldly. Then, Lady Halverston asked Miss Claire to go downstairs to see their special guest. In one room in the first floor, The ladies made their first conversation after almost five years. Lady Halverston asked Maddie why she was in London. Maddie just answered that it was just because of a friends business. Then, Lady Halverston suggested and begged Maddie to stay. Her mother begged her to live with the

Willitses again and to become a part of the family, but Maddie rejected her mother request. She told her mother that she would leave London as soon as her business was done, but she would stay at the Willits house until the time came. It was after her second debut at Almacks, and before her second debut at Almacks, she just wanted to spend her precious time with her beloved family. In Highbarrow Castle in one morning, Quinlan woke up earlier than usual. He greeted Mr. Malcolm, and then asked the butler where his mother and his younger brother were. The butler just answered that both of them went out. The duchees of the Highbarrow went out for her charitable works day, and his beloved younger brother went riding Quinlans horse. Then, the butler told Quinlan that Miss Eloise was in the morning room of the Highbarrow Castle waiting for him. Quinlan soon stepped towards the morning room to see his engaged girl. In the room, they made a private conversation while they were enjoying their tea. During the private conversation, Quinlan told Eloise that he would not marry her. Eloise felt so surprised and dropped her cup of tea. Eloise got very angry and told Quinlan that the invitations had gone out. She also added that the announcement had been made in the London Times, but Quinlan just did nothing. She did not seem to bear her anger and asked Quinlan the reason why he would not marry her. The Marquis just told her that he disliked her such bad personalities as two-faced, malignant liar, and conceited. He added that he would really not marry her for he never loved her, and he had another woman to love. She was Miss Madeleine Willits. Eloise then warned him not to marry her; otherwise, something bad would surely happen. Eloise stepped out of the morning room at high speed. She reached her coach and wrote a letter. She had one of her footmen to deliver the missive to Charles Dunfrey. The missive said that Eloise would give Charles five thousand pounds if he was able to make Miss Maddie dissapear. The plan was known by Lord Raffael Bancroft, and he then rode his older brothers horse to the Willitses house to ensure that Miss Maddie was fine. He rode the horse at high speed. At the same time, Lord Lewis visited the Willitses house to see Miss Maddie. In Maddies morning room, Maddie and the duke of the Highbarrow Castle made a private conversation after The duke made Viscount Halverston, Maddies father, retake his seat. Lord Lewis intended to bribe her. Lord Lewis would give her ten thousand pounds if she left London. It meant that Lord Lewis wanted Maddie not to

see Quinlan anymore. She told the arrogant duke of The Highbarrow Castle that she would never be able to be bribed. Lord Lewis warned her not to ruin Quinlans future because of her selfishness. He also added that Quinlan had been belonged to someone else. Maddie just said nothing, while the duke walked out of the morning room. Maddie just thought that she really believed Quinlan when he had told her that he loved her so much and wanted to marry her. Then, she stood slowly and thought about leaving London as soon as she could without telling anyone. She remembered that she could not go to Langley Hall because she was sure that Quinlan would surely look for her; therefore, she had to go anywhere else in the world. She prepared herself for a long trip while her tears were wetting her cheeks. She put her stuff into her old valise and quickly wrote a note for anyone who should care to read it; this was written especially for her beloved Quinlan when he came to the Willits house in order to look for her. She then walked out of the front door silently. On the way, she met Charles Dunfrey a few blocks away. Charles persuaded her to go with him, but it was not working to her. Maddie just told him that she prefered going to her destination on foot to going there by a carriage, but Charles did not give up. He walked fastly and stopped in front of Maddie. He asked Maddie to marry him and told her that he was ready for Maddies command. Finally, Maddie agreed to accept his help to take her somewhere she wanted to visit. Charles then took Maddies valise and motioned her into the carriage. Maddie did not know that Charles wanted to do something bad to her: Charles wanted to kidnap her. Unexpectedly Polly, Maddies younger sister, saw her stepped into Charless coach. Polly told Claire, but she did not believe what her sister had told. Polly forced her to see it with her own eyes, but Claire saw nothing when she reached her bedchamber window. She just saw Rafe running towards their front door, and then she made Polly help her get dressed in order to welcome the handsome young bancroft. She really liked him so much. Then, Claire and Polly found him downstairs talking to their father. Polly told them that Maddie left, but their father did not believe what Polly said. Maddies father told Raffael that Maddie went no-where. She was in the morning room. Then, Raffael soon walked through the hallway and found the morning door opened with no-one inside. Polly added that she saw her sister left by Charles Dunfreys coach. Raffael asked her again where they went, and Polly just pointed to the North. Rafe then knew that they went to Gretna, and he soon ran pass them fastly to get his horse.

At the same time, Quinlan and his father debated about Miss Willits. Quinlan told Lord Lewis that he was dying to be a husband of Maddies, but his father really exploded. Lord Lewis told his stubborn son that he was the twelfth duke of Highbarrow. He strengthened that Quinlan would ruin his own future if he still expected Maddie to be his wife, but Quinlan just took no-notice on his fathers warning. Lord Lewis ensured that Quinlan would only marry Eloise because he had organized everything. Suddenly Quinlan warned his father not to hurt Maddie, or he would show the duke what a spectacle he could make. Quinlan rode another horse to the Willits house for his own horse was ridden by his brother. After reaching Maddies house, he met Claire and Lord Halverston. Both of them looked frustrated. The told Quinlan that Maddie ran away again after his fathers coming. Claire just told Quinlan that Maddie, followed by Rafe, went to Gretna. Quinlan was really sure that both of them had to go to Gretna Green. After that, he left for home. In Highbarrow Castle, Quinlans mother read the paper written by his son and suddenly felt so afraid. The paper said that Quinlan wanted to follow Maddie and Rafe to Gretna Green. She asked her husband as soon as the duke got into the room. She asked him what he had done to them, but the duke just told her everything would be fine. Lady Highbarrow then added that Quinlan was following Rafe and Maddie going to Gretna Green. Suddenly, Lord Lewis felt so worried and went to Gretna Green with a dozen of footmen. On the way to Gretna Green at the same time, Rafe finally found Charless coach and ordered the driver to stop the coach, but the carriage immediately accelerated. Rafe kept following the coach with a pistol in one hand. Suddenly the coach stopped, but Rafe got Charles holding a blade near Maddies throat. Charles made Rafe come in and give him the pistol. Rafe did the Charless order, and then Rafe was tied in a chair. Then, Rafe told Maddie that the only one who asked Charles to kidnap her was Eloise. It was because Eloise wanted to make Maddie apart from his older brother. Then, Charles hit Rafes face with the pistol, and Rafe fell down to the ground. Charles actually wanted to be a husband of Maddies, but she rejected his proposal; therefore, he wanted to taste the young lady himself. He kissed her while she was tied. He kissed the pretty lady in front of Rafe, her beloved mans brother. Rafe roared and warned Charles not to do that, but Charles kept kissing her. A few times later, Quinlan found his horse and attempted to fing both Maddie and Rafe. It did not take Quinlan long time to find them because he heard his brother roaring. After finding them, Quin made a fight with Charles since the pistol was not

in his hand. The worse, Spenser was ready to help Charles. Maddie reached Rafe and used all of her power to untie him. Finally, Rafe got free and knocked Spenser away from Quinlan and Charles. Suddenly Charles scrambled away from Quinlan and reached his pocket containing the pistol. Charles stood and leveled the pistol at Quinlan, but Maddie suddenly pulled Charless rapier free and stabbed it into Charless back. Charles then swung around and hit her face with the pistol till she fell down to the ground. Quinlan fastly grabbed the pistol and shoved Charles away from Maddie. Then, the duke, accompanied by his footmen, burst into the room and helped them. Maddie shut her eyes; therefore, Quinlan felt so afraid if something bad happened to Maddie. After a little while, Maddie opened her eyes and called Quinlans name. She was alright, and it made the Marquis happy. Maddie then told Quin that there was nothing between her and Rafe. She added that she just loved him. Then, Quinlan lifted her in his arms and took her into Charless carriage. They went to Gretna Green together. It took them two days to reach there. Five days later, both the Bancrofts and the Willitses came to Gretna Green to see them. Maddie felt both nervous and afraid, but Quinlan ensured her that everything would be fine. At first, the hot air rose in the room, but then Lord Lewis suddenly said that he would accept Maddie and gave his permission to his beloved son to be a husband of Madeleine Willitss. At the same time, all people in the room felt so and so happy after they had heard the dukes statement. After that, Maddie and Quinlan lived happily ever after.
