Period 3

I learned that there are examples of geometry all around us. As pointed out in class, walls, floors, and ceilings are all examples of geometry. If not for geometry, things would be much harder in life -- we know how to calculate areas of things, perimeters, and tons of other calculations are all available to us simply because of geometry. I think it's useful to know geometry, because we can now easily recognize things we see every day as mathematical terms, as seen in the examples.
"Intersecting lines: Intersecting lines are two lines that meet at a single point. Fun Fact: Intersecting lines cannot be parallel or skew , but they can be perpendicular. They do not always have to be on the same plane, but they must touch to be intersecting. They intersect at a point, which is labeled with a capital letter."

In my house -- we have a table with an x-shaped part at the bottom of it.

"Line perpendicular to a lane: Lines perpendicular to planes must for a 90 degree/right angle to that plane. Fun Fact: When a line is perpendicular to a plane, it must be on a plane perpendicular to the plane which the line is perpendicular to. "

This was taken in my house, too. In my kitchen as well. I picked up a waffle with a fork and realized that it fit the term.

I learned that most structures are made from geometry. It could be as simple as a line, or as complex as concentric circles. Everywhere we go there is geometry and not a lot of people recognize it!

In this picture I have the bottom of a picture frame representing a line segment. A line segment is part of a line consisting of two points. A line segment can never be longer then the line itself. If you had two line segments next to eachother vertically, or horizontally, but not touching, then they would be parallel line segments!

my kitchen

For this picture I used my ceiling, floor and wall to represent two planes perpendicular to the same line. Two planes perpendicular to the same line is when you have two planes and a line passing through both of them. My ceiling and floor represent the planes and my wall represents the line.

in my living room

I learned that you can find lots of different shapes all over the place. Trying to find a good angle picture was hard because they were everywhere.

The two beams on the lock represent angles. Angles are a union of two rays that have the same end point. There are three types of angles: obtuse, acute, and right.

Lock 7

The collapsible strainer shows concentric circles. Concentric circles are circles with a common center. A target or dart board are types of concentric circles.

Target

I learned that geometric shapes can be found all around us in signs, buildings, and other structures. I also learned how to photo edit which I had never done before. Finally, I learned how important it is to follow directions exactly and work carefully to avoid making mistakes.
This is a photo of the Valvoline company logo. The first "V" in the logo is made up of two separate parallelograms that come together to form the "V." A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides. The opposite sides of a parallelogram are always congruent and its opposite angles are always congruent, too. Adjacent angles are supplemental which means they add up to 180 degrees.

Route 9, Latham, NY

This is a photo of the Livingston Avenue Bridge which spans the Hudson River between Albany and Rensselaer, NY. It is only used by the railroads. Its form is made up of a series of trapezoid-shaped steel beams. A trapezoid is a quadrilateral that has two parallel sides (bases) and two non-parallel sides (legs). The trapezoid-shaped beams of this bridge appear to form an isosceles trapezoid where both legs are congruent and both base angles are congruent, but trapezoids do not have to have congruent legs or base angles.

Corning Preserve, Albany, NY

During this project i learned a lot, but the most important was that math is everywhere. Most people may not notice it but part of their life consists of geometric shapes.

The walls of the two parking lots represent a pair of parallel planes. Parallel Planes are two planes that never intersect each other. If each of two planes is parallel to a third plane, then the two planes are parallel to each other.

Parking lot

This small pine tree in front of a stranger's front yard represents a triangle. A triangle is a plane figure with straight sides and three angles. Triangles are governed by two important inequalities. The first is often referred to as the triangle inequality. It states that the length of a side of a triangle is always less than the sum of the lengths of the other two sides.

Stranger's front yard

I learned in this project that geometry is all around us and we dont even notice it. We just need to look around the world when we are at home or even outside and you might even see some geometry!

A obtuse angle is an angle is is greater then 90 degrees and does not make a right angle. While on the bus after school one day i noticed that the bus seat was actually greater then 90 degrees.

bus

Corresponding angles are angles that are congruent to each other. I noticed as i layed my lacrosse sticks on the ground they formed to parallel lines with a intersecting line. the angles across from each other are congruent making them corresponding angles.

Living room

I learned that math objects can be found everywhere in the world. I never thought that a pier would contain coplanar points.

Coplanar points are points that are on the same plane. All of the posts on the left side of the pier are in the same plane. Any points on those posts are coplanar. I didn't realize how easy it was to find coplanar points in the real word.

A rectangle is a parallelogram with four right angles. These are rectangular windows from the Goddard mansion in Cape Elizabeth, ME. In rectangles, opposites are parallel and congruent.

Cape Elizabeth, ME

This project makes me realize math is all around us. Everyday in our lives we are surrounded by different geometric shapes.

This picture shows an example of a pyramid. A pyramid is a polyhedron that has a base and three or more triangular faces that meet at a point above the base. The triangular faces are sometimes called the lateral faces to distinguish them from the base. Also, the base of this pyramid is a square.

My House
This origami that I made is an example of a cube. A cube is a solid with six congruent square faces. The cube can also be called a regular hexahedron. It is one of the five regular polyhedrons, which are also sometimes referred to as the Platonic solids.

My House
The water coming out of the water fountain in the picture is an example of a parabola. A parabola is a symmetrical open plane curve formed by the intersection of a cone with a plane parallel to its side. In math, parabolas are often seen when graphing a quadratic equation.

Shaker High School

I learned that geometry can be found in all things around us. I had trouble finding these objects, but I thought it was a fun challenge. Everything is made up of geometry and can also be found in nature, too.

These lines are the service line and the middle line on a tennis court. They form a right angle, making them perpendicular lines. The place where perpendicular lines intersect is a point. In tennis, these lines make up the service box, where a serve has to hit in order to be in play.

Tennis court

"This Toblerone chocolate box is an example of a triangular prism. It is a prism because its sides are parallelograms. The box also has triangles as bases, which makes it a triangular prism. Toblerones are a chocolate bar from Switzerland. The formula for the surface area of a triangular prism is: bh + (S1+ S2 + S3)H "

At my house

This project really made me think about where I could find these objects and it made me realize that they are all around us and we dont even realize it. It also made it easier to remember their names, like a piece of paper or a rug are planes, and a roof line or a ceiling and a wall are intersecting planes.

I took a picture of the shed in my back yard. The roof of the shed shows two different planes. Each side of the roof is a plane, which is infinite, and at the roof line is where the planes intersect (showed by dotted-line).

Shed in my back yard

I took a picture of the piano-key rug in my room. The rug is parallel to the plane my floor lies on, which is infinite. The arrows in the picture were trying to show that the plane my rug lies on is also infinite.

I learned that everyday items are made by geometric shapes. Also all the different kinds that there are in the world and the uses for them.

A scalene triangle has no equal sides. It also does not have any angles. Scalene triangles are the most popular kind of triangles.

my house

Triangular prisms are three sided. They have three faces joining corrosponding sides with a triangle base. They are very strong and were the kind of triangles for many building structures.

my house

I learned that Math is all around us. Everything somehow has to do with shapes and geometry.

Anything perpendicular makes a 90 degree angle. And two perpendicular planes form to make a 90 degree angle. if its not perpendicular then its just intersecting.

Dining Room/ Entrance

Congruent Figures have to be exactly the same for them to be Congruent. If ones a different shape then its not congruent. And it can be a mirror Image.

Kitchen Counter

These kinds of lines are all around us in many different places. I also learned that perpendicular lines are only perpendicular when they form a right angles.

The metal beams that make this fire tower at the top of Goodnow Mountain form alternate interior angles. Alternate interior angles are formed when two parallel lines are crossed by another line at an angle. The line that crosses these two parallel lines is called a transversal line.

At the top of goodnow mountain

The posts that hold up this sign form perpendicular lines. Perpendicular lines are two lines that intersect each other and form a right angle at their intersection. Perpendicular lines are only perpendicular if they form a right angle at there intersection.

At the base of Coney Mountain

This project showed me how relevant geometry is in the real world. Also that it is everywhere in shapes, planes, and lines. The project made me look at things from a different perspective, for example, walls and ceilings turned into intersecting planes, and buttons on a dartboard turned into collinear points.

This is the handle of a tool for my fire place. It is a sphere, a sphere is a solid, round, object, where all of the points are the same distance from the center.

My living room

The buttons on this dart board represent collinear points. Collinear points are 3 or more points that lie in a straight line. The points all lay on the same plane.

I learned that there are only 3 things in America with a pentagon shape. The walking sign,a soccer ball and the pentagon.

Seeing that there are only 3 things in America that have a pentagon shape this was pretty tough to be creative. There's that walking sign, a soccer ball, and the pentagon center.I made sure the lighting was good to capture the complete figure.

In Albany by Lark Street

Im a fan of soccer so i knew that soccer balls had to be one of the shapes i used. Like i said there are only three things with that shape. And thats about it.

What I learned from this project was that many shapes and angles are apart of our everyday lives. There is no way that we could ever understand things without our understanding of shapes, lines, angles, and planes.

This picture of my television is an example of a right angle. A right angle is an angle whose measure is exactly 90 degrees. Right angles can be found in squares, rectangles, right triangles, and other shapes.
In my living room

This picture of my dog's crate is an example of skew lines. Skew lines are two lines that do not intersect but are not parallel. Skew lines are three dimensional and will never touch.

In my living room

I learned that if you actually look around in the real world, you could see many mathematical terms used in everyday life. I also learned that many of these terms are used in almost every building structure.

A Parabola is the curve formed by the set of points in a plane that are all equally distant from both a given line and a given point. Such as a flyball in baseball, once a baseball is up in the sky, as it is pulled back down by gravity, the path is shaped like a parabola. In this photo, the end of the remote is shaped just like a parabola.

My room

Adjacent angles are two angles that have the same vertex and have a common side between them. For example, architects use adjacent angles to plan and construct houses. In my photo, adjacent angles are shown by the statuette's arms and head.

I learned that geometry is everywhere even at places you would least expect it to be

The picture of this post shows a line with an undefined slope. An undefined slope is when a line is exactly vertical. One important property of this is how it angles away from the horizontal. I learned that geometry surrounds you everywhere even when you dont notice it, you just have to look carefully!

my living room

The picture of this wii wheel shows a straight angle. A straight angle is an angle of 180 degrees. One important property of a straight angle is that it measures at exactly 180 degrees!o be! I learned that geometry is everywhere even at places you would least expect it t

This picture of under my table shows a pair of intersecting lines. Intersecting lines are when two lines cross or meet at one point.

my living room

While working on this project I learned that isosceles triangles are all around us in the roof of houses. I also learned that almost everything has a midpoint.

This roof on the shed at Columbia High School represents an isosceles triangle. An isosceles triangle is a triangle with two equal sides. In an isosceles triangle the two opposite angles on the two equal sides are congruent.
Columbia High School

This railing in my house represents a midpoint. A midpoint is the middle point of a line or line segment. the man who founded the midpoint and the distance formula also founded the pythagorean theorem.

In my house

My dresser consists of perpendicular lines. Perpendicular lines are intersecting lines that form right angles. If non verticle lines are perpendicular then they have the same slope

In my room

I learned from this project that there are so many things in the world that involve math. Also there are so many shapes, lines, and angels in the world.
I took this picture outside of my backyard. I thought these two leaves created opposite rays. Opposite rays are two rays with a common endpoint, that point in opposite directions forming a straight line.

My backyard

Outside of my front window

I took this picture from my window, while it was raining outside of this telephone pole. I noticed that the telephone pole created a right triangle. A right triangle is a triangle where one of it's interior angels forms a right angle.
I took this picture of my friends backpack at her house. I noticed that there was a parallelogram surrounding the word "Pink". A Parallelogram is a four sided object with two parallel lines.

at my friend's house

I learned that math really is everywhere because thee are shapes and angles everywhere. I also learned that there are many jobs when your an adult that require you to do this kind of thing. I guess we really will use this stuff in real life..who knew?

at my parent's dry cleaner's!

The corner of the shirt hanger represents an acute angle. An acute angle is any angle that is more than 0 degrees but less than 90 degrees. It's not a right angle, because it's not 90 degrees, and it's not an obtuse angle, because it's not more than 90 degrees.

"The bow clip represents vertical angles. Vertical angles are angles that are non-adjacent formed by the intersection of two straight lines. When observing a vertical angle, there are 2 pairs of opposite angles. the top and bottom angles are the same, and the left and right angles are the same, but not all four angles are congruent. "

My bedroom

I learned that Geometry is all around us in the world. Everytime you look at something in your world, it represents some part of Geometry.

The corner of the football field at the Syracuse vs. Stony Brook game represents an angle. An angle is the union of two rays that have the same endpoint. If two angles add up to 180 degrees, then they are considered supplementary.

Syracuse Game

The field goal post and the field at the Syracuse vs. Stony Brook game represent a line perpendicular to a plane. A line perpendicualr to a plane is when a line meets a plane to create a 90 degree angle. Any line that is perpendicular to the line that is perpendicular to the plane at there point of intersection has to be coplaner with the plane.
