Period 7

What I learned from this project was that mathematics are everywhere. Even in my own bedroom there are many forms of geometry. So math is necessary to learn.

A rectangular prism is a solid (3-dimensional) object which has 6 faces that are rectangles. It is a prism because it has the same cross-section along a length. My hamper is a rectangular prism because it has 6 faces and the same cross-section along a length.

My Bedroom

Parallel lines are lines that do not intersect and have equal slopes. My bed frame has 3 parallel lines presant. The lines will never intersect each other.

My Bedroom

A plane is a flat surface with no thickness. It extends indefinitely in all directions. Formed by 3 noncollinear points. My poster is a flat surface and does extend in all directions.

In this project, I learned that a parallelogram is a quadrilateral with opposite sides that are parallel. And I also learned that a plane is only perpendicular to another one when it has a line perpendicular to the other one.

The side of this wall represents a parallelogram. A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with opposite sides that are parallel. The opposite or facing sides of a parallelogram are of equal length and the opposite angles are of equal measure.

At a friends house
My window represents 2 planes perpendicular to the same line. If two planes are perpendicular to the same line, then those two planes are parallel. A plane is only perpendicular to another one when it has a line perpendicular to the other plane.

My living room

This project motivated me to look back at old pictures and try to find geometric figures. I learned that geometric figures are a part of everyday life.
The necklace beads represent collinear points on a line. Collinear points are points that are on the same plane. Two points are always collinear.

The pillars that are holding the Olympic Rings demonstrate parallel planes. Parallel planes are two or more planes that never intersect each other. The distance between the planes is the same everywhere.

These rectangular blocks are an example of similar figures. Similar figures are figures that are the same shape but in different sizes. The shapes don't have to be in the same position, even though these are.

I learned that without geometry there would be no uniform objects that we would learn as kids. And I learned that geometry is all around us and we just have to look for it.

The Lite -Brite pegs represent the sides of a pentagon. A pentagon is an any 5 sided polygon. The pentagon is one of worlds largest building and the 5 branches of the military occupy the pentagon.

in my kitchen

The lamp post represents the ray and the top of the post represents the beginning of Ray. Ray is a line with a beginning and no end. A ray is 1 dimension and can be thought as a half line with an end point.

in my mothers garden
The eyes of the pumpkin candle represent triangles. A triangle is a 3 sided shape. The triangle is 2 dimensional object and if you have 2 sides then to find the third side you use the pythagorean theorem.

This project has taught me to identify Adjacent angles and parabolas. I also learned their definitions as well as their shape. I realized that these mathematical symbols appear in everyday life.
The symbol for McDonald's forms two parabolas. A parabola is an equation with x-squared They are negative parabolas. I know this because they point down. A parabola is symmetrical open plane formed by the intersection of a cone with a plane parallel to its side.

McDonald's

My sister plays the piano, and the keyboard legs form adjacent angles. They equal 180 degrees, or a straight line. One is acute, one is obtuse. I can tell because one looks smaller than 90 degrees and one looks bigger than 90 degrees. Adjacent angles are defined as angles that have a common side and a common vertex and don't overlap.

My house

This project has made me realize that there are opposite rays and cubes all around us. Now that I've learned about geometric terms, I've started to see these objects all around me. Our world is made up of geometry.
"The elevator at Shaker High School is made up of three ""cubes"" stacked up on top of each other. Each cube is a threedimensional solid object made of six square faces. Each side is a perfect square. Each vertex, or corner, represents a common point where three sides meet. [Geometric Term : CUBE (there was no cube listed under the term choices so I had to pick the closest match (square)]"

The tennis ball is on the fence at Shaker High School, representing an endpoint where two rays move in opposite directions. The top rail moves in a straight line to the left and right of the tennis ball, or common point. This movement of rays in each direction forms a straight line.

I learned that there are many shapes and angles used in our daily lives today. They are all around us, and you just have to keep an eye out to see them.

Alternate interior angles are formed whentransversal cuts two coplanar lines then the angles that are in between the two coplanar lines and that lie on the opposite sides of the transversal are called the Alternate Interior angles. The angles are equal to eachother. The angles can also be obtuse or acute

An Equilateral Triangle is a polygon with three sides and angles that measure up to 180 degrees. Each side of an Equilateral Triangle are equal to one another. If you combine two Equilateral Triangles together, you can make a Parallelogram.

My house

This project taught me that many of the concepts we learn in math are found in our everyday lives. Specifically, lines and angles are everywhere, from our rooftops to sidewalks to candles. They make up the world all around us.

The lamppost on this downtown street in Albany is made up of right angles. Right angles are those that measure ninety degrees. The measurement for 90 is rarely written in diagrams. Instead, a square is put in its place.

Street in Albany

The pole of the "No Outlet" sign represents a line with an undefined slope. An undefined slope is a vertical line which does not have a slope. Vertical lines have an undefined slope because the denominator is zero.

Aunt's house
The hinges of the barn door represent parallel lines. Parallel lines are lines that are on the same plane and never touch. These lines are always the same distance apart throughout their entire length.

When I was working on this project, I learned that there are many things in our world that can be defined by geometry terms. I also learned that vertical angles are called vertically opposite angles everywhere but in the United States.

This square album cover contains The Beatles album "Yesterday and Today". A square is a parallelogram with four congruent sides and four right angles. The internal angles of a square add up to 360 degrees.

These crossed drum sticks represent two pairs of vertical angles. Vertical angles are two angles whose sides form two pairs of opposite rays. Vertical angles are also called vertically opposite angles. Both pairs of vertical angles always add up to 360 degrees.

I have learned that there are examples of geometry in our lives. No matter where we look, there will always be examples of geometry.

A hypotenuse is the diagonal of a right triangle. In the picture, you can see that it is in fact the diagonal of a right triangle. To find a hypotenuse you must do A squared + B squared = C squared (c being the hypotenuse and A and B being the legs)

"Skew lines are lines that are not parallel, but do not touch. These line are in different planes. As shown in my picture, they are not in the same plane. "

my living room

During this project i learned that a lot of geometric figures are found in everyday life. Though some shapes were easier to find then others. Lastly i learned that geometry is not something that ends when class does, but it continues in life.

This is an image of a starfish paper weight. This paper weight is a cone because, if you sliced the side of the starfish you would have, a round base that met up to a point or vertex (the tip). The shape of cones are used quite often for simple things such as ice cream, but can still be a challenge to find.

My Aunt's Family Room

This is a picture of a candle holder. The candle holder, though upside down for the picture, is a perfect representation for a pyramid. It has a square base with triangle shaped sides that that end at a point or vertex. The shape of pyramids were most often used by Egyptians because of the structure and tools they had at the time.

I learned that there are geometric objects everywhere. But sometimes there are hard to find. You have to look close enough.

When the exterior sides of adjacent angles lie on opposite rays. This is a wooden board above my sink. The angles lie on opposite rays.

A 3 dimensional object with straight parallel side and an oval section. A cylinder can have a solid or hollow body. This Arizona can has parallel sides and an oval side.

I learned that even though you may not always notice it, geometry is all around us. This taught me the importance geometry plays in our daily lives.

This sign for Brown's Bar and Grill contains an obtuse angle. It is obtuse, because it is less than 90 degrees but less than 180. I took this picture right before i ate a giant plate of fries and a big bowl of broccoli Alfredo pasta at Brown's.

This firework burst is a sphere, because the lights from the burst are equidistant from the center from which they exploded. The greatest distance across a sphere is called the diameter, half of that is the radius. I took this picture while I watched a fireworks display for an event nearby in a parking lot near my house.

While doing this project, I learned that geometry is not something that applies only in the classroom. All things have some sort of geometric shape, angle, or line, and it was fun to find it in unexpected places, like in decorations in my parents' home office.

The arm of the lamp is an example of an angle. An angle is the space, usually measured in degrees, between two intersecting lines or surfaces at or close to the point where they meet. This is an example of an acute angle because the measure of the angle is less than ninety degrees.

Home Office

This is an example of intersecting planes because the paper weight, which is one plane, is intersecting the desk, which is the other plane Intersecting planes are two planes that meet in a single line. Two intersecting cannot intersect in more than one line.

Home Office

I learned that geometry is all around me. I also learned that there is a lot of geometry in hockey which is the sport I play.

The lines separated by the center dot represent midpoint. Midpoint is a point on a line segment that separates it into two even lines. This is what the center dot on a ice rink does.

The two equal sides on this coat hanger with one that is not the same represent an isosceles triangle. An isosceles triangle is a closed three sided figure with two of the sides the same. The coat hanger represents this very well because two of the angles and sides are congruent while the other is not.

This project helped me understand more what congruent angles and concentric circles were. Also, it taught me how common geometric shapes are found.

The corners of this measuring chart represents congruent angles. Congruent angles are angles that have the same measurement. If they are not in the same direction then they still can be congruent angles.

The bowls represent concentric circles.Concentric circles are circles of different sizes that all have the same center. Concentric circles can be used for making an illusions too.
