Tutorial-1 Pressure Vessel A hydraulic press has the following specifications: Capacity = 80 kN, Fluid pressure = 16 MPa, Stroke = 80 mm, Permissible tensile stress for pillar and ram = 75 MPa, Permissible stress for C.I. cylinder = 30 MPa, Distance between the center line of pillars = 800 mm, Distance between top supporting platform and bottom of top plate when the ram is in the down most position = 800mm, Design the ram, cylinder and pillars. A hydraulic press for tiles is required to press tiles of 40040035 mm thickness. Available fluid pressure is 22 N/mm2. The maximum force to be applied is 100 kN. Design the ram, cylinder, base plate & supporting column. Assume suitable materials for different parts of Hydraulic press & accordingly select design stresses. The piston rod of a hydraulic cylinder exerts an operating force of 10 kN. The friction due to piston packing and stuffing box is 10 % of the operating force. The pressure in the cylinder is 10 N/mm2. The cylinder is made of C.I. having allowing tensile stress of 40 N/mm2. Determine the diameter and thickness of the cylinder. A high pressure cylinder consists of a steel tube with 20 mm and 35 mm as inner and outer diameters respectively. It is jacketed by outer steel tube with 50 mm outer diameter. The tubes are assembled by shrinking process in such a way that the maximum tensile stress induced in any tube is limited to 100 N/mm2. Calculate the shrinking pressure and original dimensions of the tubes. E = 2.0x10 5 N/mm2. A single acting cast iron hydraulic cylinder to enable a thrust of 50 kN has maximum piston speed of 0.15 m/min. Oil is supplied to cylinder through vane pump having capacity of 10 x 10 - 4 lit/rev and running at 2800 rpm. Find the thickness of the cylinder based on Lames theory. Assume pump efficiency as 85 % and t = 20 N/mm2. Tutorial-2 Transmission Systems (Belt ,Chain and Rope) A pulley of 0.9m diameter transmits 7.5 kW power at 200 rpm. Find the width of a leather belt if maximum tension is not to exceed 14.5 N per mm width. The tension in the tight side is twice that in the slack side. Also determine the dimensions of the various parts of the flat belt pulley, assuming it to have six arms. The arms are of C.I. for which tensile stress may be taken as 15 N/mm2. The diameter of the shaft is 35 mm. Design a V belt drive from the following data. Motor Power = 3.75 kw, Belt width = 17 mm, Speed of Motor = 1440 rpm, Belt thickness = 11 mm, Speed reduction = 4 Belt area = 140 mm2 Density of belt = 1.510-5 N/mm3, Endurance limit for belt is 10 N/mm2. 11 kW, 1440 rpm motor is used to transmit power through V belt drive having following details. Each belt has area of cross section = 140 mm2, Groove angle for pulley = 380, Density of belt material = 1350 kg/m3, Diameter of pulley on motor shaft = 140 mm, Speed ratio = 2:1, Centre distance = 400 mm, Maximum permissible stress for belt = 2.5 MPa. Coefficient of friction between belt and pulley = 0.25, Find the number of belts required and pitch length of the belt. V-belt drive has the following specification: Power to be transmitted = 30 kW

Motor speed = 1440 r.p.m. Machine pulley speed =480 r.p.m. Centre distance between two pulleys = 1 m, Approximate Allowable belt speed = 20 m/sec, Coefficient of friction=0.20, Density of belt material = 1000 Kg/ m 3, Cross sectional area of V belt = 700 mm2, Find the no. of v-belts required and pulley diameters neglecting the slip of the belt. A chain drive with double strands of 16B type has a pitch of 25.4 mm. It is used to transmit power between a 15 tooth driving sprocket rotating at 700 rpm and a 60 tooth driven sprocket. For the drive conditions, a service factor of 1.3 can be used. Find (i) The power that can be transmitted by the drive. (ii) The approximate length and the corrected length of the chain, if the centre distance between the sprockets is 475 mm. The following data refers to flat belt drive, Power to be transmitted = 15 kW, Motor speed = 1440 r.p.m, Speed of driven pulley = 480 r.p.m., Density of belt material = 950 Kg/ m3, Centre distance between two pulleys = 810 mm, belt speed = 20 m/sec, Modulus of elasticity for belt material = 100 MPa, Coefficient of friction=0.35, Permissible stress for belt material = 2.25 Mpa, Belt thickness = 5 mm Calculate (i) pulley diameters (ii) length and width of the belt Tutorial-3 Brake and Clutch A single plate clutch with both sides effective is to transmit 7.5 kW at 900 rpm. The axial pressure is limited to 0.07 N/mm2. The co-efficient of friction may be taken as 0.25. The ratio of face width to mean radius is 0.25. Determine the outer and inner radii of clutch plate. A centrifugal clutch transmitting 15 kW at 900 rpm consists of four shoes. The speed at which engagement begins is th of the running speed. The inner radius of the drum is 150 mm while the radius of the centre of gravity of the shoe in engaged position, is 120 mm. the co-efficient of friction is 0.25. Calculate the mass of each shoe. A multiplate clutch is used to transmit 5 kw power at 1440 rpm. The inner & outer diameters of contacting surfaces are 50 mm and 80 mm respectively. The coefficient of friction and the average allowable pressure intensity for the lining may be assumed as 0.1 and 350 kpa respectively. Determine 1) Number of friction plates & pressure plates 2) Axial force required to transmit power 3) The actual average pressure 4) Actual maximum pressure intensity after wear. A multiple disc clutch is to transmit 4 kW at 750 rpm. Available steel and bronze discs are 40 mm inner radius and 70 mm outer radius are to be assembled alternately in appropriate numbers. The clutch is to operate in oil with an expected coefficient of friction of 0.1 and maximum allowable pressure is not to exceed 350 kPa. Assume uniform wear condition to prevail and specify the number of steel (driving) and bronze (driven) discs required. Also determine what axial force is to be applied to develop the full torque. The following specification refers to a centrifugal clutch: Power to be transmitted = 15 kW, No. of shoes = 4 Angle subtended by the shoe at centre = 600 Inner radius of

drum = 150 mm Distance of C.G. of shoe from the centre of the spider =120 mm, Coefficient of friction, the shoe and drum = 0.25 Running Speed = 900 r.p.m. Shoe engagement starts at Speed = th of the Running Speed Permissible pressure intensity = 0.10 MPa Find (i) capacity of the clutch Mass of each shoe and (ii) size of each shoe. Design a single plate clutch considering uniform wear criterion and effective one pair of contacting surfaces from the following specification: Power to be transmitted = 18.5 kW, Speed = 750 r.p.m., Outer diameter = 2 times internal diameter, Permissible pressure for the lining = 1 MPa, Coefficient of friction = 0.20, Permissible stress for shaft material = 45 MPa Tutorial-4 Spring and Bearing Design a helical compression spring from the following data: Minimum load = 100 N Maximum load = 225.6 N Compression of spring = 10 mm Permissible shear stress for spring material = 440 Mpa Spring end square and ground ends Modulus of rigidity for spring material = 0.80 x 105 MPa A semi-elliptic leaf spring consists of two extra full length leaves and eight graduated length leaves, including the master leaf. The center to center distance between the two eyes of the spring is 1 m. The maximum force acting on the spring is 10 kN and the width of the leaf is 50 mm. The spring is initially preloaded in such a way that when the load is maximum, the stresses induced in all the leaves are equal to 350 N/mm2. The modulus of elasticity of the leaf material is 2.07x105 N/mm2. Determine : (i) The thickness of leaves. (ii) The deflection of the spring at maximum load. For SKF 6207 bearing is to operate on the following work cycle. Radial load of 6370N at 200 rpm for 25% of the time. Radial load of 9080N at 600 rpm for 20% of the time. Radial load of 3638N at 400 rpm for 55% of the time. The inner ring rotates. The loads are steady. Find the expected average life of this bearing in hours. Calculate the dimensions of a helical spring for a safety valve from the following data: Valve diameter = 65 mm, Maximum pressure when the valve blows off freely = 0.73 N/mm2, Valve lift when pressure rises from 0.7 to 0.73 N/mm2 = 3.5 mm, Maximum allowable stress = 550 N/mm2, Spring index = 6, Modulus of rigidity = 8.3 104 N/mm2. A 75 mm diameter full journal bearing runs at 400 rpm. It is 75 mm long and is subjected to a radial load of 2500 N. The bearing is lubricated with SAE 30 oil with the viscosity 16.510-3 kg/m-s flows into the bearing at a temperature of 75oc. The radial clearance is 0.03 mm.
