    The changes that will affect global distribution patterns are more profound than most people realise. Many companies that have unassailable positions through the leverage of assets such as brand, distribution channel capability, operational efficiency or real estate locations could well find these assets erode in value and could become liabilities preventing them from changing to meet prevailing market conditions. This flip from asset to liability I have terms the 'inversion point". If this happens to a company, the likelihood is the cost of writing off these assets and restructuring around new market paradigms will be impossible to justify, and in such a case there is a striking parallel to the famous final scene of the 1964 black comedy "Dr Strangelove" - or as I have paraphrased things "How I learned to stop worrying and love the internet"

    We are standing at the beginning of revolutionary, dislocative change especially in distribution - far more extensive than most people acknowledge

    The rise of global online shopping, which has been fueled by the emergence of viable payment options for the mass market, access to internet-capable devices and ecient global fulllment infrastructure has only just begun to impact both B2B and B2C commerce globally. I believe there is much more to come in terms of change. The current situation is a little like the holidaymakers who, having heard news reports of an earthquake, have gone to the waters edge and nothing seems amiss ... in fact the tide has gone out a long way and the sea is calm, so the reports of a possible tsunami are wildly exaggerated!

    The result of the emergence of global online distribution is likely to change the way in which business assets are valued in the future

    It is possible we could reach a point where the value a business has built up in assets that are leveraged for their business model (distribution channels, brand awareness, store locations, to name a few) may prove to be something that impedes a business from adjusting to the new market realities

    Businesses caught in this position of inversion where their assets have become liabilities may have no place to go

    Placed in a position where the former assets are now liabilities, few companies would have the nancial capability to bite the bullet and write down/write o this situation with a single crystallization and restructure - e.g. Amway announces they will today stop MLM selling, pay o their distributors, and reposition to sell their products directly via the internet. In all likelihood, businesses placed in this situation will have little choice but to simply stay the course and follow the Dr Strangelove strategy

    You ask ... what is the Dr Strangelove Strategy?

    Your business has hit the inversion point - what had been responsible for positive value in the past has quickly turned into a liability. You investigate taking it on the chin and crystallizing the issue in the current year - close down and exit unprotable businesses and reposition quickly. But the valuation write-down, the capital cost of exit and the additional cost to re-establish a competitive business are well in excess of the value of the business and they just cant be done. And you know there is no point in doing anything less that the full monty. So all that remains is for you to replicate he famous nal scene in Dr Strangelove. .
