Barbara has served on the HBMWD since being appointed to it in 2005 and also ran a successful campaign in 2008 to retain her seat. This election cycle, Barbara is running unopposed. After 27 years in banking and real estate, Barbara retired but she certainly has not slowed down. She has remained active in the Kiwanis and American Business Women Association and also serving as a director on the Associated California Water Agencies. Presently, she is serving as the Secretary/Treasurer for the HBMWD and Parliamentarian for Humboldt Republican Women, Federated. Barbara will update us on the options and dilemmas facing the water district in regard to the loss of the pulp mill and what that means to all public water users. She is a wealth of information, so ask your questions.
Joe Bonino.
Joe Bonino will be our other candidate guest. Joe was born in Los Angeles. He received his Political Science degree from UC Berkeley and additional education in government studies at College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Joe and his wife owned and operated the Iris Inn Bed and Breakfast in Eureka. Joe furthered his education in accounting at HSU, worked at Coast Central Credit Union and also at HSU. He is a friend to small business and understands what it takes to be successful at it. Joe feels public safety is a top priority and he will promise that Measure O funds should only be used on public safety expenditures. He wants to see Eureka retain, expand and recruit businesses and job opportunities. Joe is the only council candidate that regularly uses public transit to commute to work. He walks the walk.

BUCHANAN: Romney: Best debate performance in 52 years... - WND ...Bewildered and lost without his teleprompter, President Obama ailed all around the debate stage last night. He was stuttering, nervous and petulant. It was like he had been called in front of the principal after goo ng around for four years and blowing o all his homework. Not since Jimmy Carter faced Ronald Reagan has the U.S. presidency been so embarrassingly represented in public. Actually, thats an insult to Jimmy Carter. The split screen was most devastating. Mitt Romney spoke forthrightly, with carefully studied facts and details at the ready. He looked right at the president and accused him of being miles out of his depth. Mr. Obama? His eyes were glued to his lectern, looking guilty and angry and impatient with all the vagaries of Democracy. This debate was seriously cha ng him.... - Charles Hurt/Washington Times Best Debate Performance By a GOP Presidential Candidate in More than Two Decades - Bill Kristol/Weekly Standard According to a CNN/ORC International survey conducted right after the debate, 67% of debate watchers questioned said that the Republican nominee won the faceo - CNN Andrew Sullivan: 'This was a disaster' - Live-Blogging The First Presidential Debate 2012 - The Daily Beast

Spirits raced high last evening at the Humboldt GOP "Meet U.S. Senate Candidate Elizabeth Emken held at the Sea Grill and also the Presidential debate. Elizabeth is very impressive and accomplished. Her desire to retire Feinstein is truly viable. She described the negative condition of California and our country under Feinsteins watch and voting. We DO have a senator who doesnt care about the needs of people; this is unacceptable. Elizabeth de ned the goals she has in making California the thriving and amazing place it should be. Legislation she helped draft on autism has been passed into law in 30 states, and one in California in 2011 as well, that has saved taxpayers millions working with Senator Rick Santorum. Check the Emken resume and you will agree. The polls are close and Feinstein still refuses to debate. It is time to send Ms. 42-year-career packing. [PS. Biden has 40 years (... just saying)] Everyone listened intently while Romneys delivery rocked the country with the best debate in history. It was exhilaration all the way, with rousing cheers and applause! Romneys leadership, expertise and command were perfect. It's like the 4th of July and, with only days until the election, this spark is brilliant!

Legislation Alert
SIGNING & VETOES: Redevelopment Zombies, 2nd Amendment Assaults and more
San Jose Mercury News, Sept. 29th - Gov. Jerry Brown signed 65 bills into law but vetoed e orts to replace redevelopment agencies. On Sunday, Brown will have to decide what to do with the nal 108 bills that passed the Legislature in August, capping his busiest month of the year. In September, the governor already signed 575 bills, most of which take e ect Jan. 1, and vetoed 84 others. The most controversial bills left would provide driver's licenses to thousands of young undocumented immigrants and put restrictions on jails to prevent them from holding illegal immigrants for deportation unless they are serious criminals. Of the 23 bills Brown vetoed Saturday, six would have given local governments other economic development powers to replace now-defunct redevelopment agencies in hundreds of cities, including San Jose. Redevelopment agencies are likened to the Night of the Living Dead as Brown plays wack a mole vetoing the Legislatures e orts to piecemeal redevelopment back into existence. Brown needs to siphon the redevelopment dollars to balance his billion dollar de cit. The NRA has been following Governor Brown and anti-gun members of the Legislature as they attack our Second Amendment rights. Millions of law-abiding gun owners and sportsmen must now su er these restrictive and misguided laws. Listed on the NRAs website is a list of the anti-gun/anti-hunting bills that were signed into law, and vetoed, from the 2012 legislative session. These new laws will take e ect on January 1, 2013. Senate Bill 1221 Hunting Ban, by state Senator Lieu (D-28), bans hunting bears and bobcats with dogs by the public. Senate Bill 1315 Local Regulation of Firearms, by state Senator de Len (D-22), authorizes LA County to enact and enforce an ordinance that is stricter than state law regarding the manufacture, sale, possession or use of any BB device, toy gun, replica of a rearm. Assembly Bill 1527 Open Carry Ban (of unloaded long guns), by Assemblyman Portantino (D-44), expands last years ban on open carrying of an unloaded handgun to also include unloaded ri es and shotguns.
SB-249 Assault Weapons as De ned by Detachable Magazines. STALLED. As of August 16th the bill is still Active - In Committee Process in the Assembly. AB-2109 Communicable disease, immunization exception. Parental Rights Alert. SIGNED. AB-78 Immigrants Rights Full Rights of Citizenship after one year. DIED in the Assembly Judiciary. AB-16 High-Speed Rail Authority. SIGNED. REMEMBER AB-351 Education on how beer and wine are made? This is Wes Chesbros bill that was switched on August 24th just before the end of the Legislative session. The bill is now a rural Northern California Medi-cal bill that would require speci ed counties to be annexed to the closest, contiguous county organized health system, upon approval of the county and the county organized health system. Senators LaMafa and Evans have co-sponsored this bill as well as Assemblyman Nielsen & Mitchell. Its status is ACTIVE in the Senate. Next month Ill sort out the assorted forestry and seafood bills.

It just occurred to me: with all the noise the media is making about Romney's wealth, I don't recall such bluster and handwringing over the Kennedy fortune. Or, for that matter, John Kerry's. Or the fact that John Kerry gave virtually nothing to charity while Romney gave something on the order of $4 million, in addition to his entire inheritance from his father. Biden gave less than 1.5% of his income to charity. And Obama pays a lower tax rate than his secretary. Bu ett Rule? Oh, wait, I just remembered. Romney is Republican. Kerry and the Kennedys are Democrats. Also, Romney worked for his money. Kennedy inherited his. Kerry married his. And Obama spends yours on vacations. Never mind. Nothing to see here, folks. Move along.
AMERICANISM REPORT
'Twas the night before elections, And all through the town, Tempers were aring Emotions ran up and down. And I, in my bathrobe, With a cat on my lap, Had shut o the TV, tired of political crap. When all of a sudden, There arose such a noise, I peered out my window, Saw Obama and his boys. They had come for my wallet, They wanted my pay To hand out to others Who had not worked a day! He snatched up my money, And quick as a wink, Jumped back on his bandwagon As I gagged from the stink. He then rallied his henchmen Who were pulling his cart. I could tell they were out To tear my country apart! 'On Fannie, on Freddie, On Biden and Ayers! On Acorn, on Pelosi' He screamed at the pairs! They took o for his cause, And as they ew out of sight, I heard him laugh at a nation Who wouldn't stand up and ght! So I leave you to think on this one nal note... IF YOU DON'T WANT SOCIALISM Get out and vote!
Vee Sorenson has donated to HRWF a beautiful Christmas ornament from the United States Capitol Historical Society. It is made from the old marble steps of the capitol building itself, speci cally from the wing occupied by the U.S. House of Representatives. More than 9,000 have trod the east front steps originally installed between 1863 - 1865. When the steps became worn and uneven, they were removed and replaced in 1995. The Society crushed the marble to ne powder, then combined it with resin and decorated it to create this beautiful memento. Tickets will be sold at the October and November meetings, and awarded in November, in time for Christmas.

Last week, a Humboldt State University journalism student, Colleen Chalmers, called and said she wanted to interview me the next day. At my request, she sent me several questions to prepare for the interview. She mentioned that she had tried to reach Gwen and Debbie with no success. I was under the impression Colleen was associated with the Young Republicans club on campus. She was not. When we were nished, she said she wanted to contact me again with a few more questions, but she did not. I sent the following response as an email. She emailed back that she was the editor of the school magazine and that anything she learned from the interviews would not in uence how she will vote. That struck me as very strange. Was she truly not open to learning anything new? One must wonder .... Colleen, You didnt get back to me with follow-up questions, but I have a few more facts you should nd interesting as a young woman about to graduate and, hopefully, embark on a journalism career. Under President Obama, the unemployment rate among women has soared from 7% to 14.4%! It will grow much worse if he is re-elected. There are measures he will enact early next year that will make manufacturing in the United States virtually impossible. He is striving to surrender to the United Nations more of our basic American rights guaranteed by our Constitution. If you think unemployment and poverty rates are bad now (and they are the worst since the Great Depression), they will grow much, much worse in a second Obama term. The president and his supporters talk about the so-called Republican war on women, which is pure ction. This is smoke and mirrors to divert our attention away from their failed record. Republicans support women and encourage their entrepreneurial endeavors as they do with everyone bold and brave enough to make the e ort. Under Obamas federal mandates and the liberal-controlled California state government, layers of taxes and regulations are sti ing business. More and more businesses are moving out of state. That is one of the reasons I am building a Montessori business. I can take that business model and relocate anywhere. Right now we are staying in California because my parents want to live their golden years in this community with everything that is familiar to them. We are a very close-knit family, so we will stay for now. I wish Californias nancial situation would turn around, but under the present political realities, I dont see that happening. California used to be a truly great state. The educations my husband and I received were superior to what we see today. If you were not around then, you cant possibly know the di erence. Business pays a major amount of the tax burden that keeps government running. Remember, government creates no money, it just spends what it takes from taxpayers. And now, it is continuing to spend money it doesnt even have! They have wrecked our credit rating. I am really, really worried what the future holds for young people such as my own children, any children they may have, and soon-to-be college graduates like you, Colleen. The tax burden is huge for every American and is growing exponentially. Unfortunately, the mainstream media is not covering all the news in depth or honestly. They routinely spin it much like that of the old Soviet Union, telling their audience what THEY WANT THEM TO BELIEVE. I am so saddened by what has happened in my lifetime. As a journalist, I hope that you will take the time to REALLY investigate any story you cover. Taking your walking orders from your superiors and writing the story the way THEY want you to may be expeditious for your career, but if it does not agree with your ndings, it will compromise you as a legitimate journalist. When I graduated from Humboldt State University in 1992, our graduating class accepted a pledge to only take jobs that positively impact our world. I hope that practice is still being observed. You owe it to yourself to be sure what you attach you name to is always accurate and truthful. I would like a copy of both the article you are writing for the school magazine and what you are handing in for your class project. I want to be sure that my views are accurately represented. After conferring with others, I learned that mistakes are often made and I dont want anything with my name attached to it that does not re ect my true views. Otherwise, I dont want our interview published or included in your class project. I am sure as an honest journalist, you can understand that. Most sincerely, Sheryl Fearrien
