You are given four substances, P, Q, R and S. P is an element. Q is an aqueous solution of a salt. Question 1 is an investigation of the chemical properties of P and Q. You are required to identify P and Q based on your observations. Question 2 is a titration of Q to determine its concentration. Question 3 is a measurement of the temperature change when P reacts with Q. The change in temperature is another method to determine the concentration of Q.

1. Carry out the following experiments on P and Q and record your observations in the table. You
should test and name any gas evolved. Test on P Test 1 Observations [15]

(a) Place a spatula full of P in a test

tube. Add dilute hydrochloric acid. Stir and warm. Keep the remaining P for Question 3.

(b) Filter the mixture from (a). Keep

the filtrate for Test 2.

(a) To a portion of the filtrate from

Test 1(b), add aqueous ammonia until a change is observed.

(b) Add excess aqueous ammonia to the mixture from (a).

3
Test on Q Test 3 Observations a change is

(a) To a portion of Q, add aqueous

ammonia until observed.

(b) Add excess aqueous ammonia to

the mixture from (a). Keep this mixture for Test 4.

To a portion of the mixture from Test 3(b), warm gently. Test for the gas evolved.

To a portion of Q, add 3 5 drops of S.

Suggest and carry out a test to identify the anion present in Q.

Conclusion P is _____________________________ and Q is _________________________.

4 2. R is 0.222 mol/dm3 of sodium thiosulphate.

S is aqueous potassium iodide.

(a) Put R in the burette.

Pipette 25.0 (or 20.0) cm3 of Q into a flask and add one test-tube full of S. The solution should turn brown. Add R from the burette until the brown colour has almost disappeared. Add approximately 1 cm3 of the starch solution. This will give a deep blue solution. Continue adding R slowly from the burette until one drop of R causes the blue colour to disappear, leaving a creamcoloured suspension. Record your results in the table, repeating the whole procedure as many times as you consider necessary to achieve consistent results. Results Burette readings Titration number Final reading / cm3 Initial reading / cm3 Volume of R used / cm3 Best titration results () [11] Summary Tick () the best titration results. Using these results, the average volume of R required was __________ cm3. Volume of Q used was __________ cm3. [1] 1 2 3

(b) R is 0.222 mol/dm3 sodium thiosulphate. Using your results from (a), calculate the
number of moles of sodium thiosulphate present in the volume of R required.

5
Number of moles of sodium thiosulphate is __________. [1] (c) 1 mole of sodium thiosulphate (in R) reacts with 1 mole of Q. Calculate the concentration, in mol/dm3, of Q.

Concentration of Q is _______________ mol/dm3.

[2]

3. Pipette 25.0 cm3 (or 20.0 cm3) of Q into the small beaker provided. Measure the temperature of
Q to the nearest 0.5oC and record the value in the table. Add all the remaining P to the beaker containing Q. Stir gently with the thermometer and measure the highest temperature reached. Record your value in the table. Observe the mixture during the reaction and record any changes which you would see. Initial temperature of Q Final temperature of mixture Temperature change Observations = __________ oC = __________ oC = __________ oC

[5] Questions

(a) Name the energy change that occurs when P reacts with Q.
________________________________________________

[1]

6 (b) The temperature change observed in this reaction depends only on the concentration of
salt in Q. The concentration, in mol/dm3, of salt Q, is obtained by multiplying the magnitude of the temperature difference by 0.024 mol/dm3. Calculate the concentration of Q.

Concentration of Q is _______________ mol/dm3.

(c) The answer which you obtained in (b) may not be the same as that which you obtained
in Question 2. Suggest which method (titration or temperature measure) is more accurate. State a reason for your choice and suggest a way to make the less accurate method more accurate. [3] The more accurate method is by ______________________________.
