Chapter 2 Operating Principles

2.1 OVERVIEW
Most of the printer mechanism design and electrical circuitry of the EPSON Stylus Color 300 is identical to the EPSON Stylus Color 200/EPSON Stylus 200. This chapter describes the differences in the printhead.

Printer Mechanism
A newly designed one-piece 4-color printhead is incorporated in the EPSON Stylus Color 300. This section describes the printhead.

Printhead Unit
The printhead unit for EPSON Stylus Color 300 has both monochrome and color nozzles in one unit. The nozzle arrangement on the printhead is shown below.

Title: f1-1.eps Creator: Micrografx Graphics Engine CreationDate: Tue Apr 29 14:41:16 1997

Figure 2-1. Printhead (Nozzle Configuration) To compensate for electrical characteristic variations in the printhead piezo-electric element, the electrical characteristics of each printhead are measured at the factory. The characteristic level is then used as the printhead ID. The printhead ID is recorded on each printhead by changing a signal line pathway on the head drive circuit. The main control circuit detects the status of this signal line, determines the printhead ID and adjusts the head drive voltage level accordingly. Therefore, no head ID registration to EEPROM is required on this printer. Epson Stylus Color 300 Service Manual 2-1

Adjustment Program
The adjustment program CLR300.EXE is specifically designed for use with the EPSON Stylus Color 300. The following adjustments can be made with this program: q q q q Bi-D Adjustment Head Angle Adjustment Zig-Zag Adjustment EEPROM Data Manipulation

To start making adjustment with the program, run the program on the PC connected to the target printer and follow the instructions shown on the PC monitor.

CAUTION
Since the mechanism design is identical to the EPSON Stylus Color 200/EPSON Stylus 200, refer to the EPSON Stylus Color 200/EPSON Stylus 200 Service Manual, Chapter 4, Adjustment, for detailed procedures.

Zig-Zag Adjustment
This adjustment specifies the ink injection timing for each nozzle. If the timing is off, a vertical line printed within a single print pass will be jagged. Examine the check pattern printed by the program and adjust the parameter until the check pattern is properly aligned.

Bi-D Adjustment
This adjustment specifies the print timing in bi-directional printing. If the timing is off, the vertical lines will not be aligned with each other. Examine the check pattern printed by the program and adjust the parameter until the check pattern is properly aligned.

Head Angle Adjustment

This adjustment specifies the angle between the printhead and the carriage assembly. It is required whenever the printhead is replaced. The program prints the check pattern, illustrating the angle of the printhead. The dot lines (rasters) should be parallel to each other. If the angle is incorrect, move the head angle adjustment lever (located on the right side of the carriage assembly) until the pattern prints correctly.

EEPROM Data Manipulation

Since ink system management information is stored on the EEPROM on the main board, the information needs to be kept even after the printer has been serviced. Therefore, if any of the components (main board, printer mechanism or the printhead) are replaced, you must reset the EEPROM information. Table 4-3.
