After selecting (82) squares for this quilt, you will have (170) 4 1/2 squares and (3) Panel Squares

(4) 2304-11

(1) 2306-01

(6) 2301-22 leftover for other projects. We have listed the squares used for the sample in the illustration but you

can use any you would like from the box. If you are doing both projects, you should choose the squares for both before you sew either project because you only want to trim the (82) squares that you will use for this quilt.

(1)2306-55

PLEASE NOTE: Since the panel squares are 7 1/2, you need to cut your 4 1/2 square down to 4 for the seams to (6) 2301-88 match and fit the panel blocks. See reverse side for trimming tips. Use 1/4 seam allowances. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Cut apart Baby Genius Panel 2300-11 into (12) 7 1/2 squares. Take (82) trimmed 4 squares and arrange in the order shown above or as desired. 2. Rows 1, 3, 5, 7, & 9: Sew (10) 4 squares together, making 5 separate rows.

(2) 2304-33

(1) 2306-44

(5) 2301-44

3. Rows 2, 4, 6, 8: Sew (2) 4 squares together as in the picture above and alternate with 7 1/2 panel squares, making four rows. 4. Beginning with Row 1 and 2, join rows together, matching seams, and then pressing. 5. Layer, Quilt, and Bind.

1/2 SQUARE POCKETS! GREAT FOR HIDING TOYS.

Hidden Pinwheel Quilt

by Gayle Camargo

This quilt requires (143) 4 1/2 squares for the background. This leaves 27 squares available to use for pinwheeels and half pockets. If you chose to not make the Fantasy Menagerie Quilt on reverse side and have all the 4 1/2 blocks available to use, you can make the quilt larger or add more pinwheels and half pockets. There is no additional cutting required for this project. See Tips For Sewing Pinked Edge Squares below.

INSTRUCTIONS:
ARRANGE It is important to arrange the whole quilt first before sewing.

BASE: Arrange (143) 4 1/2 squares in rows of 11 across and 13 down as

pictured or as desired. * When doing your own color blocking, first sort out your squares into color groups (greens, reds, blues, yellows, etc). Start in the middle with three blocks of a similar color and add blocks to sides and top and bottom working from the center to the outer edges. PINWHEELS: Youll need 4 additional squares for each pinwheel. See diagram and pinwheel tips below. Add them wherever desired. Pin to keep in place. 1/2 SQUARES: Youll need 1 additional square for each 1/2 square pocket. To add, fold the square in half on a diagonal. Pin to keep in place. SEW: Once the whole quilt has been completely arranged, you can start sewing the quilt top. First sew the rows of 11 squares across and then sew the completed 13 rows together. If theres a pinwheel in a given row, sew only the part of pinwheel that exists in that row into the 1/4 seam allowance. For pockets and pinweels, include raw edges in the 1/4 seam allowance. Top is now complete. Cut batting and backing 2 larger than top on all sides. The backing will have to be pieced. Assemble the quilt sandwich by placing the backing, batting, and top together in layers and baste or pin with safety pins. Machine quilt as desired and in all seams. When machine quilting is completed, trim excess batting and backing. Bind in the usual manner.

Tips for Sewing Pinked Edge Squares
The squares are cut 4 1/2. The valley of the pinked edge is cut into the seam allowance but not deep enough to affect your seam strength or 1/4 seam allowance. Place squares right sides together. Match the top of the tips just as you would a straight edge. Sew your seam the same as you would a solid edgeyou are following a dotted line instead of a solid line.

Tips for Trimming Squares

Place your see-through ruler with the largest area of fabric underneath (4 square). Using the pinked tips as your edge on the bottom, line up the vertical and horizontal 4 lines, leaving the 1/2 extra exposed on top and one side. Trim the 1/2 off the two exposed edges. This method is more accurate and faster than trimming 1/2 off two sides or 1/4 off 4 sides.

= 1/2 square pocket To make, just fold in half diagonally along line. Press to keep in place.

To make, just fold in half diagonally along line. And then fold diagonally along line again. Press to keep in place.
