WATER AND SOLUTION Title : Aim : Hypothesis : Boiling Point and freezing point of water To determine the boiling

point of distilled water and tap water. The boiling point of tap water is higher than distilled water.

Variable that : (a) kept constant : volume of water (b) is manipulated : type of water (c) responds : the boiling point of water Apparatus/Material : Boiling tube, stopper with a thermometer and a glass tube, Bunsen Burner, retort stand with clamp, beaker, thermometer, stopwatch, distilled water and tap water. Procedure : 1. A boiling tube was filled half full with distilled water. 2. The apparatus as shown in Figure 2 was set up. The water in the boiling tube was heated and the temperature was recorded every 30 seconds until the water boiled and the temperature was constant. 3. A boiling tube was filled half full with a tap water and step 2 was repeated.

Results

1. Record the temperature of the water and the tap water until they both boiled. Time (second) Temperature of distilled water (C) Temperature of tap water (C)

Discussion : 1. What is the use of the glass tube in the experiment to determine the boiling point of water? To allow steam in the boiling tube to escape so that the pressure in the boiling tube does not increase. 2. Complete the following sentences.

(a) The boiling point of tap water which contains dissolved substances is higher than distilled water. (b) The temperature at which a liquid changes to gas at a constant temperature is called the boiling point. 3. Define pure water operationally Pure water is a substance that boils at 100 C. 4. What is the boiling point of water for distilled water and tap water at the fourth minute? The boiling point of distilled water is 100 C, while the boiling point of tap water is 102 C Conclusion : Distilled water (pure water) boils at 100C but tap water which contain dissolved substances boils more than 100 C.
