Television censors labor to strip away naughty bits from your favorite television shows.
Do they also exist to protect President Obama's reelection chances? On Last Man Standings Season 2 premiere, set to air November 2 four days before the election Allens character, a Romney supporter lobbies his daughter, Mandy, to vote for the Republican candidate. On the other side, Mandys older sister makes a push for Obama. Itll be something regular people care about, so our characters should care about it, says exec producer Tim Doyle.... Doyle and Allen did have to fight the network and studio on some content. Specifically, Allen says the standards department took issue with his character calling Obama a communist. Allen fought to keep that in noting he finds it funny when conservatives paint the president with that label but it appears he lost that battle as none of the references made the final cut. Allen, thanks to his box office successes and "Home Improvement" fame, should have plenty of show biz clout at this point. Apparently, it wasn't enough.

2. This isn't really censorship. The networks and studio standards are in place to keep their advertisers and station affiliates happy. I am pretty sure they are checking for FCC compliance as well, but their umbrella is much wider.

Just talked with my wife about this. She's right, of course. ABC has the right to censor what they want on their network and frankly we shouldn't be that surprised when it happens. They are largely a liberal group. If Tim Allen, likely a conservative, wants to go do a show there, then he knows what he's getting himself into. It doesn't make the attacks on conservatives less frustrating. It just shows that we should stop supporting those outlets.

I watched a couple of the episodes in the first season. I did not feel like they wrote Tim Allens character to potray conservatives in a positive light. I always got the impression that they wrote it as he means well but, he's old, out of touch, not very smart, and doesn't understand the world doesnt work that way anymore. He thinks he is head of the house but the women actually run things... that sort of thing. I stopped watching when I got that impression.

This report is actually inaccurate. The election episode entitled "Voting" was never scripted with a line calling the President a communist. That joke appeared in a subsequent episode entitled "Dodgeball.". The producers haven't finished editing the "Dodgeball" episode and are still negotiating several jokes in that show, including the communist line. It's not a settled matter as suggested in this article.

Obviously there's a lot on tv that can be described as "mindless.". But if you are being fair you should admit that there's some pretty decent stuff as well. As I writer-producer in comedy, my primary task is to be funny. Second to that I like to be interesting. I think if you check out "Last Man Standing" -- the Tim Allen sitcom, returning November 2nd -- you'll experience both things. Is it mindless? I hope not.

I ditched TV three years ago, and from comments on this thread, I can see nothing's changed with the skewed agenda pushing and less-than-clever "humor." These liberal pig TV executives are ruing once good shows with their political spin. I loved the Office and Parks and Rec. Both very funny, creative shows. Last week The Office had an entire show about being related to Michelle Obama like it was a good thing. Parks and Rec has turned into a Liberal, Feminist infomercial. They had Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein in cameos as though they were great role models for young women. I'm done with network TV and I have cancelled HBO. Let them service the Obama sheep. This makes me feel bad. All hyperbole and partisan sniping aside, this makes me feel really, really bad. I was fine before I read this story, and now I'm just a bundle of anger, sadness, and fear. I mean, censoring a critical remark about our head of state? How can they even justify that? It's not like they called him the "N" word. It's not like they said, "Obama should go f*ck himself and die." All they did was drop the word "communist" on him, and the broadcast censors stepped in like they would in Soviet Russia. This isn't the sort of thing that's supposed to happen in America. I know Hollywood and the mainstream news media are in the tank for Obama and the Democrats, but if you're the network censor - if your job is basically to bleep swear words and crop out nudity - then how in the hell can you justify this?!
