OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE

Fatigue Analysis for offshore structures is an important part of structural design of both fixed and floating structures. The fatigue design for cyclic loads generally govern the design of connections both tubular and non-tubular connections. The topics of lecture include introduction to offshore structures, basics of fatigue including fracture mechanics, tubular and non-tubular connections, cyclic loads induced by sea waves, wind and motion response of floating structures, Stress concentration factors, S-N curves and analysis methods. The course also includes example problems using SACS software. This course will cover topics that are relevant in the industry to bring update to the audience. The course contents are designed as a primer to the young engineers as well as direct application to the design for engineers from oil and gas consultants, oil companies, and students & teachers to initiate a drive in to understanding of the challenges faced in design of foundations for offshore environment.

TOPICS OF LECTURE
The topics of the lectures for the Five day course have been carefully selected to cover the topics that are necessary for the fatigue evaluation of fixed and floating structures. Introduction Fixed Offshore Structures Floating Structures Tubular Connections Non-tubular Connections Fundamentals of Fatigue Basics of Fracture Mechanics High and Low cycle fatigue Development of S-N Curves Hydrodynamic Fatigue Loads Wave Theories Wave induced Loads Motion Induced Loads Sea State Description Rain flow counting Wave Scatter Data Directional Wave Data Spectral definition Material Characteristics Low Carbon Steel Alloy Steels Through Thickness Characteristics Charpy V-notch testing CTOD testing Stress Concentration Factors (SCF) Empirical Equations FE analysis interpretation Applicability of empirical equations SCF computation and Interpolation Cyclic Stress Response Simulation Static Deterministic Analysis Dynamic Deterministic Analysis Static Spectral Analysis Dynamic Spectral Analysis Deterministic Fatigue Analysis Cyclic Stress Range Hot Spot Stress Range S-N curves for tubular connections S-N curve for plated Connections Palm-Miners Rule Wind Induced fatigue Analysis Wind Turbulence Models Wind Spectra Spectral Wind Fatigue Analysis Reliability Based Fatigue Assessment Reliability based Models Reliability Based Inspection Prediction of crack growth VIV Induced Fatigue Analysis Basics of Vortex Induced Vibration Inline and Cross flow motion Amplitude of Response Deep water riser fatigue Example Problems and Case studies Deterministic Fatigue Analysis Motion Induced Fatigue Analysis Wind Spectral Fatigue Analysis Spectral Fatigue Analysis

LEVEL OF PARTICIPANTS
The course will cover basics of fracture mechanics and fatigue including advanced topics such as stochastic analysis methods. Hence the basic knowledge of the structural mechanics prior to the course will be an added advantage to the participants. The course is designed such that the participants from industry, engineers from oil companies, consultants, college teachers and students will benefit from the course content.

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY MADRAS

Set in verdant wooded surroundings, the campus of IIT Madras offers an ideal environment for the most stimulating research activities. The Institute campus extends over an area of 2.5 square kilometers in Chennai, the political and cultural capital of Tamil Nadu. The IITM campus is a self-contained township with all the facilities of a modern university, situated in wooded surroundings. The short term course will be held at the Department of Ocean Engineering, Seminar Hall.

A course notes in the form of hand book will be provided to all participants.
