ED 315 PROFESSIONAL FIELD EXPERIENCES

Evaluation by Cooperating Teacher Directions: Please note students strengths or areas in which s/he can improve in each category below. When possible, please provide specific examples or comments to support your view. 1. Conducts self in a professional manner. (e.g., attendance, preparation, respect) From the moment I met Sara, she displayed her professionalism. Sara was consistently on time, always prepared for the lessons, and dressed in accordance with the school dress code. She was respectful in the way in which she coordinated her schedule and lessons to correlate with the curriculum. 2. Encourages development of a positive self-image in learners. (e.g., gets to know students, positive interactions with students) Sara has a very natural teaching ability with teenage students. From the first day, she immediately started working with the students while they were doing group-work, without hesitation or awkwardness. Her positive influence with the students was particularly seen when she joined us in advisory. Sara spoke with the students individually about college and related her experiences to their specific situations. 3. Interacts effectively with students, colleagues, administrators, parents. Sara joined the teachers during lunch on her teaching/observation days. Many of the teachers commented on her positive personality and enthusiasm for education. As I noted, Sara naturally was able to relate to the students. What I was most impressed with is that she has already developed a strong student-teacher relationship, not being too much like a friend or a mother, but a nicely balanced teacher. 4. Demonstrates effective teaching skills at the field student level. (e.g., planning, implementing lesson) Sara prepared and initiated a variety of lessons for both Chemistry and AP Biology. The lessons included a lab, lab analysis, lecture and practice. She took a lab from the text book and formatted it for the students to complete. The lab was about the various geometric structures of compounds. Sara arranged the lab with charts for them to fill in so that they could organize the information. In addition, she created an assessment that allowed the students to critically think about the assignment and apply their knowledge. 5. Communicates effectively through speaking, writing, and listening modes. My students both gained knowledge, and enjoyed when Sara (Ms. Z) came in to teach. The most common comment I heard from them was that they liked how she took a complicated science concept and applied I it to a real-world situation. For example, when talking about ionization energy, she related it to keeping track of many children, or few children at a mall, a concept all students could relate to. Sara prepared various handouts for the students (one case is noted above) and made sure she explained the information thoroughly.

Final Comments/Suggestions for Student: Sara has the passion, ability and intelligence she needs to excel in teaching. The components she needs to develop relate to general management strategies that she will develop through practice and experience.
