1. - DEFINITIONS.

System of two Linear equations in two unknown variables: It is a pair of two linear equations in two unknown variables with the following general form:

Where are Real numbers, and the unknown variables which we have to calculate. To solve that system of equations, we have to find the values of and which verify both of and are the solutions of the following system: equations. For example, the values

2.- SOLVING SYSTEMS OF TWO LINEAR EQUATIONS AND TWO UNKNOWN VARIABLES. There are 3 methods to solve that kind of system. It depend of the kind of the system, we are going to use one or other method. On the other hand, we can classify the system depending of the number of solutions: 1. Incompatible system: If there is not solution. We have that situation when at the final we obtain some false expression like that: 2. Compatible system: If there is solution. 3. Determined compatible system: If there is only a solution. 4. Undetermined compatible system: If there are infinite solutions. We have that situation when at the final we obtain some false expression like that:

3.- METHODS OF RESOLUTIONS OF SYSTEMS OF TWO LINEAR EQUATIONS AND TWO UNKNOWU VARIABLES.

SUBSTITUTION METHOD. (2X2 SUBSTITUTION METHOD) To solve a System of linear equations by that method, we have to follow the next steps: steps Example:

We obtain the expression of one of the variable in one of the equations. 2. We substitute the same variable in the other equation by the previous expression, so we obtain a equation in one variable that we can solve. 3. When we solve the previous equation, we obtain the value of one of the variables. If we substitute that value in the other equation, we have again a equation in one variable. If we solve it we obtain the value of the other variable. 4. The solution of the system is the SOLUTION: pair of values we obtained. We must check the solution in the original system of equations.

1. EQUALIZATION METHOD. (2X2 EQUALIZATION METHOD) To solve a System of linear equations by that method, we have to follow the next steps: steps 3) We obtain the expression of one of the variable in one of the equations. 4) We obtain the expression of the same variable in the other equation. 5) Both of them are expression of the same variable, so they are equal. We have obtained a linear equation in one variable, so we can solve it. 6) When we solve the previous equation, we obtain the value of one of the variables. If we substitute that value in one of the expressions of the other variable, we

obtain the value of the other variable. 7) The solution of the system is the pair of SOLUTION: values we obtained. We must check the solution in the original system of equations.

2. REDUCTION METHOD (2X2 ADDITION METHOD) The objective of that method is to reduce one of the variables in both of the equations by addition. We must follow the next steps: Steps We multiply one or both of the equations by a number so that in both of equations appear the same coefficient of one of the variables but with different sign.. If we sum both equations, we obtain a equation in one variable which we can solve. When we solve the previous equation, we obtain the value of one of the variables. If we substitute that value in one of the original equations, we obtain the value of the other variable. The solution of the system is the pair SOLUTION: of values we obtained. We must check the solution in the original system of equations. Example:

Examples: 1. - Use the better method to solve the following pairs of linear equations: a) b) c)

4.- SOLVING PROBLEMS. The way to solve problems by systems of linear equations is the same that equations. The system that appear in problems are easy so the difficulty is in to translate to algebraic language and to find the expression of the system that solve the problem.
