Presidents Report from Natalie Jupe
Gday everyone, Firstly, an apology that I could not stick around for last weeks meeting, however it is not every day you get a last minute invite to an event hosted by the US embassy (PS Andrew and I had a lovely night). By all accounts the crane folding went well and we have got 42 cranes to take to the district conference. A huge thank you goes to Bethany Freeman-Chandler for coming along and assisting us in this task your help was very much appreciated. We have a big night planned for our Polio Day Dinner dont forget it is at Punjabt Hut (and not at the pub). Be prepared for some interesting facts about Polio, the chance to get your own purple pinkie, as well as some lucky door prizes. I had a great weekend at the Australian Rotaract Conference in Canberra. Approx 130 Rotaractors (and a few Rotarians like myself) had a fun filled few days. Friday night involved Presidents drinks and a Halloween party. Saturday was a full day of speakers and activities followed by an awesome dinner at The Abbey (however I had to go home for a nana nap in the afternoon). Sunday was finalized with a photo shoot on the lawns in front of Parliament House promoting the End Polio Now campaign see photo on next page. Doug reliably informs me that the BBQ for Mental Health has been rescheduled to Friday 9 November. If you are able to volunteer your time on this day, please let Doug know via email - doug@mitchellfamilyonline.com or call him on 0402 431 021. Christmas is nearly here which means it is nearly Christmas party season YAY!!! Please note the change of date for th our Christmas party lunch. It is now going to be on Sunday 9 December at 12:30 so be sure to pop it in your calendar. Joan will be sending out the invites very soon, so please keep your eye out for it. There is also a facebook event page in place. Registrations for the District Conference have now closed but I am pleased to say that a good number of our members will be attending. It should be a great weekend, with great speakers and lots of fun. Expect a full report on the conference in next weeks edition. Lastly we will need some volunteers for our information stall at the Sunset Markets on Friday 2 November if you are able to spare an hour or two of your time please let me know. The markets are always good fun, plus it gives us a chance to let the community know about our fantastic little club. Rotary is Rot-a-awesome Natalie

FEDERAL FUNDING URGENTLY NEEDED FOR POLIO SURVIVORS

Campaign created by Polio Australia You dont have to be, or even know, a polio survivor to understand and support the need for urgent Federal Funding to help Australias forgotten and largely invisible post-polio community. It only takes a second to click on these links, which is all that is required to inspire hundreds more people like you to sign the Petition and join the Were Still Here! Campaign. There are hundreds of thousands of Australians who are in urgent need of support and specialised services to diagnose, treat and manage the complex and debilitation symptoms of the Late Effects of Polio services that require Federal Funding. Surprisingly, there is currently no funding at all for Australias polio survivors, and this has to change! Why is this important? Before polio was eradicated in Australia after the Salk (1956) and Sabin (1966) vaccinations became available, Australian hospitals were inundated with polio cases and children in callipers were a common sight in schools. Those children grew up and today polio survivors represent the largest single physical disability group in the country. Little do people know that those who contracted polio between the 1920's and 1960's are now experiencing the often debilitating Late Effects of Polio (LEOP) or Post Polio Syndrome (PPS) as they head into their senior years. Together with migrants, including younger immigrants from more recently eradicated or still polio endemic countries, these Australians will require specific LEOP/PPS services for at least the next 20-30 years. Currently there is no federal funding for post polio services in Australia. Polio Australia also requires funding to continue providing support, information and education to polio survivors, health professionals and the community. Research has shown that it can take up to six years for a polio survivor to be diagnosed correctly due to a lack of knowledge within the health sector. In the meantime, polio survivors will suffer with fatigue, muscle and joint pain, respiratory problems, and a range of other symptoms with little or no support to understand or manage their condition. http://www.communityrun.org/petitions/federal-funding-urgently-needed-for-polio-survivors http://www.polioaustralia.org.au/?page_id=134 Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/PolioAustralia Twitter: https://twitter.com/PolioAustralia

Check-in to collect your badge and function tickets on Friday at Bay Waters Resort after 4.00 pm or at Batemans Bay Soldiers Club from 7.45 am on Saturday. If you can help at the Registration Desk let Conference Secretary Clare Hack know phone (H)4474 4191 or email hack.clare@gmail.com Look up the District website for the guest speaker program and additional information about the conference it is not to be missed.

There seems to be some concern about what to wear to the Back to the Beach dinner to be held at the Soldiers Club on Saturday 27 October. The Conference Committee is trying to keep the conference reasonably casual for the whole weekend and that would include the dinners on both Friday and Saturday night. People are encouraged to come dressed as they feel comfortable reminding everyone that there is a dress code for access to the Soldiers Club so no bikinis, Speedos (thank heavens!) or thongs. Some will wear beach themed gear while others will wear neat casual gear whatever you are comfortable in and please dont feel obliged to dress up to match the theme if you dont wish to. The Committee wants everyone to feel comfortable and enjoy the night.
