Title contenders on center stage

LUT WILLIAMS The list of contenders for top honors in the Div. II black college conferences the CIAA and SIAC has narrowed as teams enter the nal two weeks of regular season races. And with a month's worth of games left in the FCS conferences the MEAC and SWAC though there are some clear leaders, its too early to count a host of teams out. Let's start in the SIAC. SIAC Defending West Division and conference champion Miles and Tuskegee will play for the West Division title next week and a spot in the Nov. 10 league championship game if Miles, playing at home Thursday (6 p.m., HSRN), gets by West Division foe Stillman (4-4, 3-2, 2-1). Miles (7-1, 5-0, 2-0), under second-year head coach Reginald Rufn and led by senior all-conference quarterback David Thomas (113-179-6, 10 TDs), has won seven games in a row and is ranked this week 21st in the AFCA Div. II Coaches' Poll, rst in Div. II Super Region II and fourth in the BCSP Top Ten. It's the rst time Miles has ever been Thomas ranked in the NCAA poll. The Bears are leading the SIAC in scoring (38.0 points per game) and total offense (434.9 yards per game). Tuskegee (6-1, 5-0. 3-0), who is on the road Saturday (4 p.m.) for a non-divisional game at Clark Atlanta (2-6, 2-4, 1-3 E), is right with Miles in the

standings and on the stat sheet pacing the conference in scoring defense (10.4 ppg.) and total defense (271.,6 ypg.). The Golden Tigers are led by freshman running back Derrick Washington's league leading 114 rushing yards per game (9 TDs) Stillman can get a share of the West Division title if it beats Miles Thursday and then has Tuskegee beat Miles next week in their showdown in Birmingham. In that scenario Tuskegee would get the title by virtue of its win over Stillman (16-0 on Oct. 11). In the East, Fort Valley State and Albany State are tied at the top and will also meet next week (in Columbus, Ga.'s Fountain City Classic) for the division title if they get wins this week. FVSU (6-2, 4-1, 2-0) is at homecoming (2 p.m.) at Morehouse (2-6, 1-4, 1-2) while Albany State (5-3, 4-1, 2-0) faces Benedict in Augusta, Ga.'s Augusta City Classic (2 p.m.). CIAA Winston-Salem State (8-0, 5-0), under third-year head coach Connell Maynor, is up to second nationally in this week's AFCA Div. II Coaches' Poll and second in Super Region I. The Rams can clinch their second straight South Division title and spot in the Nov. 10 league championship game with a win this Saturday on the road (Durham, N.C., 1 p.m.) vs. Shaw (4-4, 3-2). WSSU closes the regular season next week at Fayetteville State. In the North, Elizabeth City State took over the top spot with its 47-21 win Saturday over Chowan. The Vikings (5-3, 4-1) host Virginia Union (4-4, 2-3) Saturday (1 p.m.). Virginia State (4-4, 3-2), who owns the only conference win over ECSU, is currently tied with Chowan (4-4, 3-2) for second place. The two meet at VSU Saturday (1:30 p.m.). An ECSU win Saturday coupled with a VSU loss would give the division crown and spot in the title game to ECSU for the second straight year. MEAC The topsy-turvy MEAC has a showdown for the lead in the conference Saturday (4 p.m.) in Daytona Beach, Fla. when Bethune-Cookman (5-2, 4-0) does battle with upstart North Carolina Central (5-2, 4-0). NCCU, in its second year under head coach Henry Frazier III, was picked near the bottom (ninth) in the preseason by conference coaches. But the Eagles, powered by an efcient offense, stingy defense and opportunistic special teams play, have won four straight league games to tie B-CU at the top of the conference. B-CU third-year head coach Brian Jenkins has the Wildcats in the thick of the conference race again after winning the title in his rst year and falling just short a year ago. NCCU has averaged 36.5 points per game in wins over Savannah State, South Carolina State, Morgan State and Hampton. They have surrendered an average of 20.7 points during the streak. Ironically, the most points they have given up during the streak is 33 to Savannah State who is winless in the conference. B-CU, meanwhile, is coming off a 48-3 thrashing of defending conference champ Norfolk State last week and is getting excellent play

from sophomore quarterback Quentin Williams (43-68-0, 5 TDs), who has started the last four games. The 'Cats lead the MEAC with an impressive +17 turnover margin. The other surprises have been Williams Howard and Delaware State, picked eighth and 11th by league coaches in the preseason, who are tied for third headed into the season's nal month. Howard (5-2, 4-1), in head coach Gary Harrell's second season, has won four of ve league games as it heads to Orangeburg, S. C. for South Carolina State's homecoming Saturday (1:30 p.m.). DelState, in head coach Kermit Blount's second year, has been perhaps the biggest surprise. The Hornets (4-3, 3-1) are coming off a shutout win (24-0) over N. C. A&T which preceded big convincing wins over defending champion Norfolk State (20-17) and perennial power S. C. State (31-17). The Hornets are an impactful +12 in turnover margin, trailing only B-CU in that statistical category. DSU plays at Morgan State Thursday (3-4, 2-2) in a game to be carried live on ESPNU (7:30 p.m.). SWAC The big showdown in the SWAC this week is in Birmingham where East Division leader Alabama A&M (6-1, 5-1) and Alabama State (4-3, 4-2) collide Saturday in the 71st Annual Magic City Classic at Legion Field (2:30 p.m., HSRN). A&M comes in with a one-game lead over 'Bama State and Jackson State (4-4, 4-2) in the East. Both Mississippi Valley State (2-5, 2-3) and Alcorn State (3-5, 3-3) are close behind with three conference losses. MVSU plays homecoming at West Division leader Arkansas-Pine Bluff (5-2, 4-1) while Alcorn State has the week off.
