Chamber to celebrate new downtown

By Kody Klein
Special Writer

The Village of Manchester will hold a special event to celebrate the completion of construction along Main Street from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 27. We wanted to do an open house for downtown, said Janet Larson, president of the Manchester Area Chamber of Commerce. Larson said the downtown construction fixed the sidewalks, updated the lights and trees, and added benches and bike racks along the street. Its very inviting, she said. It maintains the integrity of the historical buildings that we do have downtown. The event, called Meet Me in Manchester, will

feature a special harvest farmers market and a bounce house for children. Members of several public safety departments will be attending the event to show support for the village and Sheriff Jerry Clayton will partake in a ribbon cutting ceremony. The ribbon cutting is going to symbolize the reopening of Main Street, Larson said. According The Manchester Downtown Development Authority, downtown construction was part of the Michigan Department of Transportations larger project to redo M-52, which runs through Manchester. The whole project is just

Freedom Twp called out in state lawsuit

Clerk sends military ballots four days late
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson and Attorney General Bill Schuette today announced they are filing suit against 24 communities, including one Washtenaw County community, to require local clerks to extend the counting deadline for ballots that were not sent by the deadline set by Michigan election law. Freedom Township had one military ballot request, which was sent out four days late. The men and women who put their lives on the line to defend our freedoms must be able to participate in our democracy, Johnson said. While the vast majority of local clerks met the deadline, we must ensure that all military and overseas voters voices are heard in the Nov. 6 election. Johnson and Schuette are pursuing legal action to ask judges to order local clerks to extend the counting deadline for military and overseas voters who applied for a ballot by the Sept. 22 deadline by the number of days the ballots were delayed. Legislation supported by Johnson that would allow the secretary of state to extend the counting deadline without the need for court intervention is before the state Senate after House approval. Americans have the right to make their voice heard on Election Day and military personnel who put their lives on the line for our freedoms should be no exception, Schuette said.

Schools get boost from Crab Races

The Manchester Community Schools Foundation will hold its annual Crab Race from 5 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 3 at the Manchester Sportsman Club. Crab races provide fun, familyfriendly evening entertainment while supporting the education of our communitys most precious resourceour kids. These fast-paced races are fun for all ages and admission is free. Hermit crabs in a shell, purchased for $10 each, are released from the center of a large round table; the first one to cross the finish line in each heat is declared the winner. There are five heats and a final round each hour, so there are plenty of opportunities for your crab to win! Each race is sponsored by a local business in support of the mission of the Manchester Community Schools Foundation. All money raised from the races will benefit the foundation, a 501(c)3 organization that provides mini-grants to teachers in grades K-12, to supplement curriculum and programs. With the school districts ever-tightening budget, it can be hard to find money for special programs that will benefit the students. The foundation considers grants monthly. This years grants have included a pilot program for homework support,

Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson. Despite repeated reminders from the Michigan Department of State Bureau of Elections and other groups, clerks in 24 local communities reported that they did not send out 38 military and overseas ballots 45 days before the Nov. 6 election, as required. More than 8,700 ballots were requested before the deadline. That means that more than 98 percent of clerks sent the ballots in time and the number of late ballots is significantly less than during the August primary election when 155 ballots were sent to military and overseas voters past the deadline. Bureau of Elections staff sent multiple reminders to all 1,517 local clerks about their responsibility to send out the ballots by the deadline. Bureau of Elections staff also worked with the Michigan Townships Association and the Michigan Municipal League to inform local clerks about the deadline.
