CARLOS V. FRANCISCO

Carlos V. Francisco, affectionately known as Botong, was the illustrious son of Angono, whose natural genius, fortified by exceptional draftsmanship, engendered an art that chronicled the mythical world of the Filipino and its breathtaking history. His art was characterized by an immense love for the fabled place that is Angono, such that the names of the artist and his hometown are now inextricably linked together. Tradition, folklore, myths, legends, and customs deeply influenced his works, from which emerged such classic Filipino practices as the bayanihan, orasyon, harana and the fiesta. Not only are these virtues and values particular to a town but are also national, indeed defining proudly the identity of the Filipino. Deeply immersed in community activities which honored the towns patron, San Clemente, he was an exemplar, not of the solitary artist, but of one who was self-giving and accessible to the people. His art, bathed in the routine and the rituals of the neighborhood, flowing inevitably with folk culture across the vast country and around the islands of the archipelago. Never leaving his homeland to imbibe Western vogues, Francisco, on his own, created his masterworks equal to the excellence of art elsewhere. He conceived the world from his native clearing, intimately and extensively. Most famous for his murals, Francisco was the foremost practitioner of the art. Through his persistent and keen research, he brought to life the panorama of the nations struggles against foreign colonizers until freedom was finally won and cherished. On these monumental canvases, he portrayed the nobility and valor of our heroes, seamlessly weaving their narratives down the centuries. That he worked as well in film makes his talent all the more robust, mingling the technology of moving image and the density and luster of painting.

In the current century and beyond, Francisco continues to inspire succeeding generations of local artists, known as the Angono School, which draws sustenance from his example, thus maintaining the vitality and vibrancy of the folk imagination in contemporary time. The immortality of his legacy was assured and validated by the proclamation of Carlos V. Francisco as National Artist in 1973.
