Name of Lesson: Physics Dance Party

Grade Level: 11-12 Subject: Physics Prepared by: Arne Hendricksen

Overview and Purpose: Students will use ipads outfitted with wireless motion sensors to observe how their movements are related to displacement, velocity and acceleration. The ipads are also equipped with the Loggerpro app which allows the ipad to communicate with various sensors and then graphically interpret the information collected by the sensors. Once groups understand how these measurements are related to their motions, they will recreate six graphs predetermined by the instructor. These graphs will require students to move towards or away from the sensor while also, speeding up, slowing down or moving with constant speed. They will conclude the lesson by summarizing how they moved to recreate the graphs. Educational Standards

12.D.2a Explain constant, variable and periodic motions. 12.D.4a Explain and predict motions in inertial and accelerated frames of reference.

Objectives: Upon completion of the lesson students will be able to:

(Synthesis Level) recreate a velocity vs time graph with a motion sensor (Synthesis Level) recreate a displacement vs time with a motion sensor (Comprehension Level) interpret a displacement vs time graph to find velocity. (Comprehension Level) interpret a velocity vs time graph to find acceleration.

Materials Needed:

Ipads preloaded with the Loggerpro app (12) Vernier Labquest 2 interface (12) Vernier motion sensor (12)

Other Resources:

Information: Give and/or demonstration necessary information

Begin the lesson by showing students how to open the Loggerpro app on the ipad and collect data from the motion sensor. Show students how to move only in front of the motion sensor, not to exceed a distance of 10m from the sensor. Show students how to hold a dry erase board in front of their bodies so the sensor more accurately measures their displacement and velocity.

Verification: Steps to check for student understanding

Students will run the app and move around in front of it to verify that it is collecting data and they are moving as instructed. The students will then observe the graphs that are automatically generated from the data they collected in the Loggerpro app. The instructor will move around the room to verify that students have created VT and DT graphs on the ipad. The instructor will ask students to identify the velocity and acceleration in various segments on the trial graphs they created.

Activity: Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson In groups of two, students will work to recreate 3 displacement vs time graphs and 3 velocity vs time graphs given by the instructor. They will use their motions and the graphing capabilities of the Loggerpro app to do so. Students should alternate between trials so that each students gets an opportunity to create the data or collect the data. Once they have recreated each graph to their liking they will copy it into a google document. In the document, for each graph they will explain the motions they did in front of the sensors to create the graphs. They should describe if they were moving towards or away from the sensor and if they were speeding up, slowing down or moving with constant speed for each segment of each graph they made. Notes Set up laser lights, disco balls, strobe lights and spot lights to create a disco atmosphere. Also, create a playlist of dance music the students find relevant or request students to submit their own playlists in advance of class, so that the instructor can screen them for appropriateness.
