We will continue to encourage participation from the young scientist in order to help them, help us develop better tools and methods in managing the plastics industry and its impact on the environment. The students present were from the Indonesia Institute of Technology under the tutelage of speaker Mrs Aniek S. Handayani who spoke on Green Plastic Packaging Industry Trends. The plastics and plastics products industry has become one of the most dynamic growth sectors in the manufacturing industry. Developing new packaging, incorporating new production process technologies and developing marketing strategies are all left behind as focus is put on meeting environmental and health concerns and global trends for safer food packaging. Mr Chok Hak Leong, Sales Director of BU Functional Chemicals, Lanxess Pte. Ltd began the conference with a paper on Phthalate-free Plasticiser for Plastic Packaging. The general consensus is that the consumer does not want phthalate plasticizers and the global market is going through structural changes towards compliant products. It was heartening to hear that substitutions of phthalates where technically and economically feasible. Mr Chok also indicated that several products may soon be subject to total substitution due to various regulatory initiatives. He also stated that environmental and health concerns were the main (but not the only) drivers for global plasticizer market. The work of non-regulatory public pressure such as the press and non-government consumer and environmental and consumer advocates are generally responsible.

Speaking earnestly, Mr Chok then detailed the commission regulation EU that set the rules for plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food and he then explained that food contact materials must not transfer their components into the food in unacceptable quantities (migration). It was rather clear that Lanxess had alternative phthalate free plasticizers that meet the highest standards for food packaging to help make food containers safer. Mr Chok spoke of Lanxesss phthalate-free plasticizers Adimoll DO, Adimoll AGF, Ultramoll III and Ultramoll IV met the application needs, were the better choice as it met regulatory restrictions and had advantages that meet the highest standards for food packaging.
