Fireworkssalesarenotanticipatedtodeclinethisyear,saidTNTFireworksmanagerFernando Viramontes. Viramontes,whomanagesabout40locationsintheElPasoarea,saidthathepredictsthis FourthofJulyseasonwillbeagoodoneforfireworkvendors,despitethecurrenteconomic climate. "Weexpectthat,becauseoftheeconomy,morepeoplearegoingtodecidetostayhomeinstead ofgoingoutoftown,"Viramontessaid. StephanieAlmaraz,seniorkinesiologymajor,saidthattwoofthethingsshewaslookingforward RobertHernandez(left)andJohnnyYturales (right)waitforcustomersattheMontana tothisholidaywereafamilybarbequeandpoppingfireworks. "We'regoingtohavefireworks,"Almarazsaid."Myfamilyisprobablygoingtospendabout$20 to$30thisyear,whereinpreviousyearswespentaround$40."

Whiletheaveragefireworkssaleisusuallyaround$40or$60,manylocationsarecapableofbringinginabout$300and$400per transaction. JorgeAguilar,seniorcommunicationmajor,willalsobeenjoyinghisIndependenceDaywithanannualfamilycookout,butwillnotbe buyinganyfireworks. "It'salotofmoneyandwehavetodriveouttosomewherereallyfar,"Aguilarsaid."Weenjoyitmorewhenwatchingthansettingoff fireworksourselves,andit'slessdangerous." Others,likeSamanthaPerez,juniorkinesiologymajor,havedecidedtoabstainfrompurchasingfireworksbecauseoftherestrictions prohibitingfireworkdisplayswithincitylimits. PerezadmitsthatherfamilyusedtobuyfireworkstocelebratetheFourthofJulywhentheylivedinFabens,butthatmovingtoElPaso changedthattradition. "WeusedtopoptheminFabensyearsago,buteversincewecameherewehaven'tboughtany,"Perezsaid. However,Viramontessaidthatfireworkpoppingwasallowedinanyareawherefireworksarebeingsold.Hesaidthat,whileprivate aerialfireworksdisplayscannotbeheldwithincitylimits,therearenorestrictionsinplacethisyearfortheElPasoCounty. Butevenforthosestudentswhodonotpurchasefireworks,pyrotechnicdisplayswillremainapartoftheirfestivitiesthisyear. Many,likePerez,willenjoyapublicdisplayattheDowntownStreetFestival.Almaraz,andotherAnthonyandCanutilloresidentswill takeinthespectacleatWet'n'WildWaterworld. Aguilarandhisfamily,alongwithmanyotherElPasoans,willenjoythedisplayorganizedbytheChamizalNationalMemorial. "Welikegoingtherebecauseit'stheclosestplaceandusuallythereisalotofMexicanstherecelebratingtheFourthofJuly.It'sa comfortlevelthing,"Aguilarsaid. TNTFireworkshavebeeninoperationsinceJune24anddespitethecompetingpublicdisplaysscheduledaroundtown,Viramontesis confidentthatsaleswillincreasefromlastyear.Twotopsellingbranches,locatedatMontanaandChaparral,havealreadybegunto showencouragingfiguresinreachingthisgoal.
