Chapter 6 Performance Assessment

You are going to visit your Aunt Bea who lives in a town where you have never been. You would like to get an idea of the layout of her area of town. Aunt Bea gives you the following description in a telephone conversation. Maple and Fir Streets are one block apart and run parallel to each other in the east and west directions. Washington and Jackson Streets are one block apart, parallel to each other, and perpendicular to Maple and Fir Streets. The Crosstown Expressway forms a 30 degree angle with Fir Street between Jackson and Washington Streets. 1. Following Aunt Beas description, draw a map of her area of town. Label all streets.

2. Aunt Bea lives at the corner of Jackson and Fir Streets. She lives on the corner that is closest to Maple Street but not closest to the Expressway. Place a star where Aunt Beas house is located. Across Fir Street from Aunt Beas house is a park shaped like an isosceles right triangle. Add the park to your map. 3. Compare your map with another person who followed the same directions. What are some differences that you notice? What additional instructions could Aunt Bea have included to insure that only one version of the map is correct?

4. The Crosstown Expressway and Fir Street form four angles where they intersect. What are the measures of these angles? What are the measures of the angles that the Crosstown Expressway forms with Maple Street?

5. Add a shopping center to your map and include directions as to its shape and placement.

Teacher Notes
Concepts and Skills This activity requires students to: draw parallel and perpendicular lines. draw a 30 angle. determine the measures of angles. draw an isosceles right triangle. describe a polygon. Materials protractor ruler Guiding the Activity When you look at a map, which way is customarily pointing toward the east? the west? the north? the south? Answers 1. Sample answer:

Scoring Rubric
Level 4 Standard to be achieved for performance at specified level Full Achievement The student correctly drew the map, determined the measures of the angles, and described the polygon without errors. The student showed a thorough understanding of geometric terms and relationships. Explanations were thorough and well written. Substantial Achievement The student made minor errors drawing the map, determining the measures of the angles, or describing the polygon. The student showed substantial understanding of geometric terms and relationships. Explanations were well written, but could have been more thorough. Partial Achievement The student made considerable errors drawing the map, determining the measures of the angles, or describing the polygon. The student showed some understanding of geometric terms and relationships. Explanations were incomplete and not well written. Little Achievement The student made major errors drawing the map, determining the measures of the angles, or describing the polygon. The student showed little or no understanding of geometric terms and relationships. Explanations were missing or unclear. No Achievement The student provided a completely incorrect response, one that was not interpretable, or no response at all.

2. See map above. 3. Sample answers: Maple Street is below Fir Street instead of above it. Jackson and Washington Streets are in opposite places. Crosstown Expressway is pointing the other way. Aunt Bea could have told whether Maple or Fir Street was farther north, whether Washington or Jackson Street was farther west, and whether the Crosstown Expressway ran northwest to southeast or northeast to southwest. 4. 30, 150, 30, and 150; 30, 150, 30, and 150 5. Sample answer: See map above. The shopping center is on the southwest corner of Fir and Washington. It is in the shape of a rectangle, with the long side on Washington Street.
