3. Download the language version of the assignment template concerned from the MyVLE for preparation and submission of your assignment. ASSIGNMENT QUESTION / SOALAN TUGASAN

INTRODUCTION: GRAMMAR PRACTICE FOR MALAYSIAN ESL LEARNERS 1. This assignment requires you to read a journal article, reflect on its ideas and apply them in the teaching of grammar in an ESL context. You need to complete all tasks in Parts I and II. 2. The required reading (in PDF) can be downloaded from your course myVLE: Puspalata C Suppiah, Sathiyaperba Subramaniam, & Angelina Subrayan @ Michael. (2011). From trash to treasure: grammar practice for the Malaysian ESL learners. Canadian Social Science, 5, 167-175. INSTRUCTIONS: PART I a) Read the Introduction of the paper by Puspalata C Suppiah, Sathiyaperba Subramaniam, and Angelina Subrayan @ Michael (2011). Do you think the problems of teaching and learning of grammar outlined in this section are very common in Malaysian schools? What are other pertinent problems that ESL teachers and learners in Malaysia face in the teaching and learning of grammar? b) Support your discussion with suitable examples drawn from the ESL context in Malaysia and relevant ideas taken from at least TWO related theories/studies on teaching of grammar. (750 words) - 15 marks

PART II a) Select any ONE of the lesson plans appended (pp.174-175) and run the selected lesson for two different classes. b) Record the two lessons conducted. ( TIDAK PERLU) c) Give a brief description of the two classes in terms of the class population, English language proficiency level, special characteristics of the class, etc. You must submit the video clips of the two grammar lessons conducted (in the form of a CD). (300 words and video clips - 10 marks) d) (i) How effective was the selected lesson plan in facilitating the grammar lessons you conducted for the two classes? Did it work equally well for both classes? Why? (ii) Give TWO suggestions to improve the selected lesson plan and provide the rationale for your suggestions. (ii) Support your discussion with relevant ideas taken from at least TWO related theories/studies on teaching of grammar. (750 words) 15 marks **You MUST attach a copy of ALL journal articles cited in this assignment.**
