Use of Ever Ever means at any time. It is used mainly in questions.

Do you ever wish you were rich? (= at any time) Have you ever been to England? (= at any time up to the present) He has been unhappy ever since he left home. (= at all times)

Ever and always Ever is not normally used to mean always.

I shall always remember you. (= NOT I shall ever )

But note that ever means always in a few expressions likeforever, ever since, ever after and Yours ever.

I will love you forever. Yours ever. (ending a letter to an intimate friend)

Use Ever is used mainly in questions. It is also possible in negative clauses, but never is more common than not ever.

Have you ever seen a whale? I dont ever want to talk to him again. (OR I never want to talk to him again.)

Ever is also used after if and other words that express a negative idea (like hardly or nobody)

Nobody ever visits them.

Ever in affirmative clauses Ever is used in affirmative clauses after superlatives and only.

He is the oldest man ever to have climbed Everest. She is the only woman ever to have won this award.

Ever and before Ever and before can both be used to mean at any time in the past, but there is a slight difference. Before refers to a present event, and asks whether it has happened at another time; ever does not refer to a present event.

Have you been to England before? (The hearer is probably in England.) Have you ever been to England? (The hearer is not in England.)

The use of FOR We use For when we measure the duration when we say how long something lasts. For + a period of time To measure a period of time up to the present, we use the present perfect tense and not the present tense.

I have known her for a long time. (Correct) I know her for a long time. (Incorrect) I have lived here for ten years. (Correct) I live here for ten years. (Incorrect)

The present tense with For refers to a period of time that extends into the future.

How long are you here for? (Until when) How long have you been here for? (Since when)

In reality, we can use all verb tenses with For. Uses of For Example sentence They exercise for two hours every day. They are exercising for three hours today. He has lived in Moscow for a long time. Verb Tense Present tense Present continuous Present perfect

He has been living in Turin for three months. Present perfect continuous I worked at the service station for five years. Past tense He will be in hospital for at least a week. Future tense

However, we don't use For with expressions such as all day or all the time.

I was there all day. (Correct) I was there for all day. (Incorrect)

The use of SINCE Since gives the starting point of actions, events or states. It refers to when things began. Since + a point in time (in the past), until now.

I've been waiting since 7 o'clock. I have known him since January.

With since we use the present perfect tense or the past perfect tense.

I have been here since 5 o'clock and I am getting tired. I had been working since 5 o'clock and I was getting tired.

Since can also be used in the structure It has been + period of time + since.

It has been two months since I last saw her. It has been three years since the last earthquake.

For vs. Since Knowing when to use FOR and when to use SINCE is important. Therefore it is useful to look at a summary of the contrast between FOR and SINCE. FOR to mention a specific period (or duration) of time. I have been a doctor for fifteen years. (duration = 15 years) She has been a mother for six months. My sister has lived in Frankfurt for nine months. SINCE to mention the starting point of a period of time (continues to now). I have been a doctor since 1992. (starting point = 1994) She has been pregnant since her first child was born. My sister has lived in Frankfurt since the beginning of March.

Both For and Since are most commonly used with the perfect tense - we don't use these expressions in the present tense. Correct I have learnt Russian for three years. They have taught geography since last year. He has owned his dog since his cat died. Incorrect I learn Russian for three years. They teach geography since last year. He owns his dog since his cat dies.

While we can use For in the simple past tense we can't use Since in the simple past tense. Since can only be used in the perfect tense. Correct Incorrect

She went to Japan for three years. I studied in New Zealand for one month. He walked his dog for four hours.

She went to Japan since 2003. I studied in New Zealand since one month. He walked his cat since four hours.

It should be remembered that both For and Since have other meanings in English that are not associated with time. This is for you. Is this the train for London? Since you asked, I'll say yes. Since he didn't study he didn't pass the exam. El uso de already y yet

JUST - Using just with present perfect:

Use: Use just to express actions that have happened RECENTLY. Just goes after the auxiliary have/has and before the past participle - Maria has just finished her homework. (not so long ago) - They have just come from the supermarket. - It has just started raining.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE YOU TO LEARN THIS? Por ejemplo, Its 5:00. Its late. Its time to go. How long does it take? (Cunto tiempo se tarda?) It takes a day to get there.

It takes years to learn a musical instrument. It takes a long time to get from one city to another in India. How long does it take? How long does it take to cook pasta? How long does it take to learn a musical instrument? How long does it take to get from one city to another in India? Si esta estructura te resulta complicada, recomiendo que aprendas How long does it take de memoria y que la practiques aadiendo cualquier verbo en infinitivo despus. How long does it take + to lo que sea.

Cuando hablamos de cunto tiempo le lleva una actividad a alguien en concreto, identificamos a la persona despus del verbo to take: It takes me/you/him/her/us/them/Bob/my parents hours. Lo mismo pasa en las preguntas: How long does it take you to make pasta? (Cunto tiempo tardas en hacer pasta?) How long does it take her to get to work? (Cunto tiempo tarda en llegar al trabajo?) Aunque estas preguntas parezcan complicadas, te resultarn ms fciles si aprendes de memoria el principio (How long does it take?) y si aades la persona ms la actividad despus. Una buena manera de practicar sera empezar con slo la persona: How long does it take you? How long does it take her? How long does it take them? How long does it take Allen? How long does it take your brother? How long does it take you to fall asleep? How long does it take her to wash the dishes? How long does it take them to do their homework? etc.

Por ejemplo, en el pasado simple: How long did it take you to fall asleep? How long did it take her to wash the dishes? It took me an hour to fall asleep. It took her fifteen minutes to wash the dishes. Por ejemplo, para decir algo como Cunto tiempo tardaras en dormirte? puedes seguir el siguiente proceso: How long does it take? (presente) > How long would it take? (condicional) > How long would it take you? (aadiendo pronombre) > How long would it take you to fall asleep? It takes

It takes me It would take me. It would take me an hour It would take me an hour to fall asleep. Ejercicios Traduce estas frases al ingls: 1. Cunto tiempo se tarda llegar hasta all? 2. Cunto tiempo tardar en aprender a conducir? 8. Tardars dos o tres meses. 9. Cunto tiempo habramos tardado si esa carretera hubiera estado abierta? 10. Ella tardara 15 minutos en lavar los platos.
