The Salem Courthouse Community Center is pleased to introduce its new Program Coordinator, Ruthanne Hunter. Ruthanne joined the CCC family in September and brings with her a diverse background including many years as a volunteer serving the community as well as great energy and enthusiasm. She grew up in the Battenkill Valley area and is a graduate of both the Cambridge Central School and the College of Saint Rose where she pursued a major in Speech and Language Pathology. Her husband, Kyle, is a 4th generation part-owner of the Salem Hardware Store, and their daughter Olivia and son Evan are both students at the Salem Central School. A Labrador Retriever, Jack Russell Terrier, 3 cats and some backyard chickens complete the family. Ruthanne has many arts and crafts interests including making jewelry using her own flame-worked glass beads. Her love of Salem stems from a deep appreciation of the scenic beauty as well as the many rich friendships she has developed over the years. Ruthanne is already hard at work creating new opportunities at the CCC and welcomes folks to stop by and share their ideas. EXCITING NEW OPPORTUNITIES AT THE CCC. Two new classes will be offered for children for the first time this fall at the Salem Courthouse Community Center. The first, Puppet Club, will be offered for children in grades 3 through 6 on Tuesdays until January 15 at 2:30 pm. Students will learn to manipulate puppets, make a sound track and change scenery. They will also learn all aspects of a professional performance which will be held on January 22. Play selection will be determined by the number of children involved, and possible choices include: The Nutcracker, The Gingerbread Man and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The second new class is Chime Choir which will be offered to students in grades 3 through 6 on Tuesdays, until January 15 at 3:35 pm. The chimes are set up like a piano keyboard and the children will learn to play using music similar to piano music. The children will learn the correct ringing techniques and rhythm reading leading to a performance on January 22 as well. Chime Choir for adults will also be offered the same day starting at 5 pm utilizing the same techniques. Debi Craig will be the instructor for the three groups. Debi has 34 years of teaching experience and has organized a Puppet Club and Chime Choir in the Dorothy Nolan Elementary School in Saratoga Springs where her students performed at many events and festivals. Proctors, Universal Preservation Hall Team Up To Renovate UPH and Raise Bar on Regional Arts AccessUniversal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs and Schenectadybased Proctors continue to explore opportunities to work together to complete needed renovations on the historic Hall and to expand the reach of the arts in and around downtown Saratoga and throughout the Capital Region as well. Proctors CEO Philip Morris and UPH President of the Board Dorothy Foster brought the questions surrounding the restoration and potential partnership to a moment earlier today in a press conference in the Great Hall at UPH. Thirty-year Saratoga resident Foster, who is best known by the name she prefers, Teddy, expressed excitement about the nascent relationship between UPH and Proctors arts and entertainment complex both longstanding and esteemed arts institutions in the Capital Region. For his part Philip Morris said that he envisions the Hall as Saratogas living room a safe and welcoming gathering place and cultural heart of the city where residents experience the arts, share information and plan events a goal he set and achieved at Proctors, which now boasts four performance spaces and hosts more than 1700 community and theatrical events each year. The relationship with Proctors is expected to yield efficiencies, reduce duplication, improve financial prospects and increase artistic opportunities while enabling Proctors to more fully realize its regional vision. Proctors is considering absorbing some UPH functions that may include ticketing, finance, marketing, development, education programming and group sales the core competencies required to run a performing arts organization. Universal Preservation Hall at 25 Washington St. already hosts music, theater and other events including weddings. Built in 1871 as the Methodist Episcopal Church, the grand building fell into disrepair but has undergone extensive renovations and improvements in recent years. When the renovations are finished, the seating capacity of the Hall will be 800; another 150 to 200 could fit in the community room. FOR MORE INFORMATION, please contact: Teddy Foster, President, Board of Directors, Universal Preservation Hall, Home Office: 518-583-9762. tfsaratoga@nycap.rr.com Mary Beth McGariahan, UPH Office Manager. manager@universalpreservationhall.org; 518-584-2627.

ADOPT A PET! Matthew, a black cat, came to Second Chance because his family abandoned him at a mans house, and then he brought him in to find their forever homes. Matthew uses his litter box properly, gets along with cats, and would probably get along with dogs as well. If you think Matthew is the perfect cat for you please come in and meet him. Russi, a black amd white cat, was surrendered to Second Chance because his owner was moving and left him behind. A nice lady found Russi and took care of him until he could come in for help. Russi is older and declawed so must be an indoor only cat. Russi is friendly, gentle, mellow, and would make a great lap cat. If Russi sounds like the cat for you please ask a staff member for more information. Mystery was surrendered to Second Chance with her kittens because her owner had too many animals. Her previous owners said she wouldnt be good with dogs but would be okay with mellow cats. If you are interested in Mystery please come in and get to know her. Second Chance Animal Center 6779 Vermont Route 7A Shaftsbury, Vt 05262. www.2ndchanceanimalcenter.org 802-375-0294 or 802-3742898. e-mail: Secondchance@wildblue,net.

Blinkys Random Thoughts

From the book of poems by Edward Frasier of Bennington, Vermont who suffered from a rare and painful lung disease. He was hospitalized because of the disease, but, rather than simply wither away, during the last few months of his life he wrote a book of poems. Ed was not a college graduate, and wrote his poetry from what he called a common mans perspective. THIS ROAD CALLED LIFE This place weve lived, this road called life, Crops born of love, darkness pierced by light. A single road behind us lays, Built from choices we made each day. A single road, how many years long? Which fork to take? Which way is wrong? The road ahead seemed so unsure, it was hard to know, just where we were. Weve always known, someday, this road will end. But we know not where, and we know not when. So this road we built, as we came this way, is what brought us here, where we are today.

PLANNING TO SURVIVE THE NEXT DISASTER-When: Thursday November 15, 2012 from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM. Where: SUNY Adirondack, Miller Auditorium, Dearlove Hall, 640 Bay Road Queensbury, NY 12804. We see it every day on the news; hurricanes, wild fires, floods and dozens of other natural disasters that pose a threat to our businesses. What we don't hear about are the computer failures, leaky water pipes, power outages or asbestos and the significant threats these pose on our businesses. Planning is the key to survival. A well rehearsed Business Continuity Plan can turn a 6 month outage into a 48 hour outage. Join us in Thursday, November 15th when Geoff Turner with Tech Valley Continuity, LLC will present 'Planning to Survive the Next Disaster'. During the course of the seminar, Geoff will introduce you to the steps and concepts you should consider when planning to survive the next disaster.

When Insults Had Class: These glorious insults are from an era before the English language got boiled down to 4-letter words. A member of Parliament to Disraeli: "Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease." "That depends, Sir," said Disraeli, "whether I embrace your policies or your mistress." "He had delusions of adequacy." - Walter Kerr "He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire." - Winston Churchill "I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure." Clarence Darrow "He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary." William Faulkner (about Ernest Hemingway). "Thank you for sending me a copy of your book; I'll waste no time reading it." - Moses Hadas "I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it." - Mark Twain "He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends.." - Oscar Wilde "I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; bring a friend.... if you have one." - George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill. "Cannot possibly attend first night, will attend second....if there is one." - Winston Churchill, in response. "I feel so miserable without you; it's almost like having you here." - Stephen Bishop "He is a self-made man and worships his creator." - John Bright "I've just learned about his illness. Let's hope it's nothing trivial." - Irvin S. Cobb "He is not only dull himself; he is the cause of dullness in others." - Samuel Johnson "He is simply a shiver looking for a spine to run up." - Paul Keating "In order to avoid being called a flirt, she always yielded easily." - Charles, Count Talleyrand "He loves nature in spite of what it did to him." - Forrest Tucker "Why do you sit there looking like an envelope without any address on it?" - Mark Twain "Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.." - Oscar Wilde "He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp-posts... for support rather than illumination." - Andrew Lang (1844-1912) "I've had a perfectly wonderful evening. But this wasn't it." - Groucho Marx "He has Van Gogh's ear for music." - Billy Wilder

Blinkys Random Thoughts

Its late fall and the Indians on a remote Mohawk Indian reservation in northern New York asked their new chief if the coming winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets. When he looked at the sky, he couldnt tell what the winter was going to be like. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he told his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect firewood to be prepared. But, being a practical leader, after several days, he got an idea. He went to the phone booth, called the National Weather Service and asked, Is the coming winter going to be cold? It looks like this winter is going to be quite cold, the meteorologist at the weather service responded. So the chief went back to his people and told them to collect even more firewood in order to be prepared. A week later, he called the National Weather Service again. Does it still look like it is going to be a very cold winter? Yes, the man at National Weather Service again replied, its going to be a very cold winter. The chief again went back to his people and ordered them to collect every scrap of firewood they could find. Two weeks later, the chief called the National Weather Service again. Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold? Absolutely, the man replied. Its looking more and more like it is going to be one of the coldest winters weve ever seen. How can you be so sure? the chief asked. The weatherman replied, The Indians are collecting many, many loads of firewood . COURTNEY LUSKIN, RENS COUNTY DAIRY PRINCESS says, One of my favorite drinks is chocolate milk. You may be thinking well thats bad for you, but chocolate milk is a very nutritious choice. Chocolate flavored milk is packed with nutrients that make it nutritionally superior to soft drinks and fruit drinks. Chocolate milk is a greater way for youth to get their three every day of dairy. School is a very important place to provide chocolate milk to kids. Many schools today only offer regular white milk to students due to budget restraints and other concerns. Students are less likely to drink milk in this case and more likely to drink, juice or soda. Studies have found that chocolate milk has increased overall, at both the elementary and secondary level, milk consumption by eighteen percent. In a 2004 report, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended real fruit or vegetable juices, water and low-fat white or flavored milk over drinking a sweetened drink. Flavored low-fat milk is the ideal choice for our youth to drink these days. It is very important for schools to offer the choice to youth. More info @ 518-663-5220. UNCLE WALLY WONDERS

Regarding the program run by the present regime, Cash for Clunkers, a person who has been a professor at the University of West Virginia in Morgantown for the last forty some years calculated this bit of information: A clunker that travels 12,000 miles a year at 15 mpg uses 800 gallons of gas a year.A new vehicle that travels 12,000 miles a year at 25 mpg uses 480 gallons of gas a year. So, the average Cash for Clunkers transaction reduced gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year. The government claims 700,000 clunkers have been replaced so that is 224 million gallons saved per year. That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.5 million barrels is about 5 hours worth of U.S. consumption.More importantly, 5 million barrels of oil at $70 per barrel costs about $350 million dollars. So, the government paid $3 billion of our tax dollars to save $350 million. They spent $8.57 for every $1.00 they saved.Im wondering what kind of savings we will have with their health care program. I think we know the answer. Vote them OUT!
