Take-Home Composition #4: Exemplification

100 points (10% of your class grade) 150-300 words THREE COPIES (TYPED) OF YOUR ROUGH DRAFT DUE: Monday, November 5 FINAL DRAFT DUE: Wednesday, November 7 For your fourth take-home assignment, you will write a one-paragraph composition in which you explain an idea by providing specific examples. We will start by discussing stereotypes in class and how they can be based on race, gender, and sexuality, among other things. Prompt: In this composition you will discuss television characters who are examples of stereotypes. These can be stereotypes in terms of race, gender, or sexuality. You should give at least three examples of stereotypical television characters, and the characters can be from any era; they dont have to be from shows that are currently on air. You also want to make sure to explain why each character can be considered a stereotype. The more specific you are, the better your composition will be. Expectations: To succeed on this assignment, you should submit a paragraph with the following elements: An effective topic statement (1-2 sentences) that describes the topic and reveals the three characters that you will discuss in this paragraph Topic-Illustration-Explanation method of organization A body (the Illustration part of your composition) that consists of giving at least three examples of stereotypes on television; you should also explain what makes each of the characters you have selected a stereotype Effective use of transitional words and phrases An effective concluding statement that sums up the main idea of the composition and restates the main idea Complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs. All sentences marked with proper end punctuation (usually a period) and the first word capitalized All pre-writing you have done A rough draft (to be reviewed during peer workshop) A final draft (typed; MLA format)

Characteristics of MLA format for a Word document: The basics: 1 inch margins all around; 12 point font; Times New Roman Header with your last name and page number (ex: Smith 1) at the top right corner Heading with your name, my name, the class name, and date with the day month and year on the left side. Heres an example: John Smith Professor Drawbond English 21 1 October 2012 Double spaced everywhere Your title should be centered and the first letter of each word capitalized (except minor words such as of, the, and, and in) o Your title should NOT be: All caps In bold Bigger than the rest of the composition Underlined
