Scene I

AT RISE: (Mrs. King enters from the kitchen door

with an apron on and a cup of coffee in
her hand; she walks over and sits down
in a chair, but forgets to put the radio
on. She jumps back up and goes over
and pick up the remote and turns the
radio on; she comes back and sits down;
she takes a deep breath as she gives a
sigh)

MRS. KING
Thank you Jesus! I tell you what, Lord without you I would forget my head if it wasn’t
on my shoulders.

(Radio comes up and Shirley Ceasar’s

Live from NYC CD is playing)

Oh, I love Shirley Ceasar.

(Talks to audience)

I hope you don’t mind if I sing a little this morning. It helps me get on my way.

(She does 3 songs from the Live from NY CD.

She sings one song in the house; the second
song out on the end of the stage; 9 minutes of singing
and in the audience;
the third song down in the theatre,
while walking among the audience.)

I hope you don’t mind if I have church this morning.

(She is walking back

(Motions to Joe Jr.)
Joe I….

(He takes his last breath)

MARTHA
(after Joe Sr. is finished, Martha gets up
crying)

He’s gone! Oh Lord, Please forgive him.

JOE SR.
(talking to Jr.)
Listen son, that was courageous what you did for us, but none of this would have
happened in the first place, if you would have just stayed away from the street life. You
see I was lucky I had your Mama in my life to make me want to change. I know what’s
in them streets. Nothing, nothing but death
(turns and points at Leroy)
Jail and prisons I didn’t want that for you. But what you did here for your Mother, I’ll
never forget! So whatever it is you’ve got to go through, we’ll be there for you as a
family, okay Son
(hugs him)

JR.
Okay Dad, listen you guys need to go get Stevie!
(detective putting handcuffs on, but in front)

DETECTIVE MADSON
We’ll see that the judge knows what went on here. Oh and I wouldn’t worry about
your brother, we have an undercover officer with him. I’ll have an officer drive us to

the Precinct and pick up your son. I’ll radio and have him waiting, by the time we get
there.

So what good is it doing me to get mad?
I’m only driving myself insane

STEVIE
(walking away muttering under his breath)
Yeah, we’ll see
(going over to the CO)
May I go out to the Rec yard?

CO
Yes,
(looks in amazement)

STEVIE
(talking to himself as he goes into the Rec Yard, scared)
Thank you Jesus
(blows)

OOOh Lord, I wish you would send in the man who is supposed to be watching out for
me. Even though I know that you will guide me in the path of righteousness for his
name sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death. I will fear
no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a
table before me, in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup
runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me. All the days of my life, and I
will dwell in the house of the Lord forever, and ever. Amen.

(after singing B. Little comes out to talk to Stevie)
(walks on the rec yard)
B. LITTLE
Hey! Little King, have you talked to your brother lately?

STEVIE
No, have you?

LITTLE
Let me cut through the bullshit, your brother owes me some money. I mean some real
cheddar, you see. And I’m going to be going away for a little while, well (pause) a long
while. Soooo, what you need to do is get on a phone and track him down, or that
spaced out friend Leroy, and tell them you are about to die, if they don’t get their ass
down here and take care of their business. Ok!!!

STEVIE
But I don’t have anything to do with that.

LITTLE
(walks up on Stevie to his face, pointing his finger at him)

You know that’s the sad thing about, innocent bystanders, they die everyday, just
standing by innocently.
(laughing as he leaves the rec yard)

STEVIE
Lord, what have I gotten myself into?
(walking around in the rec yard)

GERALD
(comes in as Little is leaving)
(talks to Stevie)
Are you alright kid?

STEVIE
(has his hands over his eyes)
No, I mean Yes.
(disgusted, feeling betrayed)
I don’t know really whether I am or not.

GERALD
Well you can talk to me, if you want, we got plenty of time.

STEVIE
Actually I don’t. I need to use the phone.

GERALD
Well, they won’t be on for maybe 45 minutes to an hour. So as I said we got time. Hey,
I’m a pretty good listener.
(Stevie starts to talk to Gerald, not
Knowing that the guy is there to help him)

(Joe turns to Stevie)
Alright, Stevie you and I can finish this discussion when you get back.
(Joe gives Stevie the keys;
As Stevie walks over to the table he picks up his knapsack
Off the floor and leaves out the front door;
Joe hides the money in a location near the fireplace;
Leroy is peeping from the kitchen)

JOE JR
Hey Leroy, what’ up with all that chicken? We got stock in Bojangles or KFC?
(Joe laughs, Joe comes back and sit on the chair)

LEROY
(as he comes from the kitchen
holding two glasses and
two bottles of liquor)

No…but, we might buy some stocks in alcohol…and I don’t mean rubbing alcohol.

JOE JR

(Joe sitting in the chair;
Leroy sits on the couch;
opens a bottle and pours
the liquor in the glasses)

LEROY
(Takes a drink)
What’s up?

JOE JR
(Trying to break the news gently)
Well, I’ve been telling you to save your money for quite some time now. The time has
come for me to call it quits. I mean, Choir Boy got a CD that I think just might make
it…I’ve got an opportunity to put some of my sales ability to work for real…and help
my brother’s dreams come true…And make something out of myself.

LEROY
What about me? You don’t LO------VE me?
(pauses)
(Sits up on the edge of the couch, shocked with disappointment)

So, you just gonna leave me high and dry, right?

JOE JR
No man.. It’s not like that. I’m not leaving you high and dry. How much money have
you saved?

LEROY
(digging in his pockets;
Throws about $500 on the table)

Here’s what I got.

JOE JR
No man! I mean money that you’ve made with me…I know you got at least five to ten
thousand dollars put away.
(Leroy stands up; shakes
his head in disappointment
and smirks laughing, puts his hands
in his pocket as he walks pacing the floor)

I spent it okay, on hotels…hoes…and clothes. Man, you know I got to look good and
my jewelry…I got to keep the Bling, Bling.
(holding up his big medallion)

JOE JR
(Calmly)
O.K., then here’s what I’m going to do for you, Brother..I’m going to give you the last
package. You will pay Little’s people what we owe them and keep the rest…From me
to you.
(Reaches in coat pocket; gets
package of cocaine; give
Leroy the package of cocaine)

LEROY
Well I’ll be damn…Thanks! And all this time together and you just gonna bounce on a
brother? No gold watch for a loyal worker….
(pauses, then smirkingly smiles)

All the SHIT that we’ve been through…This is how it all comes down…
(murmurs under his breath)

So you think.
(starts looking for knapsack; walk over to the coat rack
which is by the kitchen door.
places other package in his coat, walks back over by the couch)

Hey, there was a knapsack or something here a little while ago. What happened to it?

JOE JR
What did you say before that?
(doorbell rings)

LEROY
(changes subject)

What I said was…How about letting me hang out on the road with you?
(pauses)

Naaah, that SHIT don’t even sound good to me.

Why not?
(excited --- pauses)

Yeah,Why not get off the streets?...Look at doing something positive with your life. I’m
sure I can find something for you. At least…
(walking with his arm around Leroy)
(As they walk toward the door but stop in the middle of the floor)

…we’ll both be leaving them streets alone…Eventually…find a nice woman…settle

down…and raise a family. You know the way we talked about when we were young.
Well what do you say?

STEVIE
(almost in tears)

It’s not mine. It’s not mine, I tell you.

SECOND OFFICER
Just relax…Just relax…
(patting him down; on hood of car
Places hand behind his back)

STEVIE
(prayerful tone)

Lord, please, I know this isn’t happening to me! Please tell me this is just a dream.

FIRST OFFICER
Well son, you’ve just help me make Detective…
(smiling and holding the
cocaine in the air while
other officers are giving
high-fives and thumbs up)

starts rapping alone at center stage)

(people are up dancing,

conversating and laughing;
near end of song, a cell
phone begins ringing)

are you offering us?

First of all, I’m not offering anything. Secondly, I don’t think your client is guilty. I ran
a check on him and he has no priors…..
(bending over getting closed to his face)

Yes sir, your Honor. I’m trying

JUDGE
Well there are a few people you owe a debt of gratitude to. Like Detective Madson for
believing in you. And especially undercover officer Smith, who risked his own life to
save yours. If it wasn’t for these men putting their lives and careers on the line for
you…..Well lets just say we would hate to see any innocent people go to jail. Now as
far as paying your debt to me and these fine upstanding men how about a sample of
what you sound like.
STEVIE
You mean a song, Here, Now!

JUDGE
(yes comes after each question)
Yes, Yes, Yes. Now is just as good a time as any. Heck I’ve seen Judge Larry Joe do it in
his court room on TV, why not in my court room?

STEVIE
(clears his throat)

(continues with song, sings another song during the
middle to the 2nd song, officers bring Joe Jr. in with his shoulder
in a sling, he sits in the last row and watches Stevie)
when he finishes he sees Jr. and does one more song for his brother,

(talking to guys around his table)
I remember one time
(laughing before he gets it out)

…I had a partner, a big dude. We used to call him Grape Ape.

So I had to go by the house and get something, I can’t remember what. So I invited him
in, cause he was genuinely a good guy. So,
(laughing)

…so I let him meet my mama, she’s a trip. Man she says what’s on her mind, Jack.
(laughing)

…anyway, she call me to the room, she said Lord Boy where’d you get that one from. I
said why? What’s wrong mama? She said he must’ve been a pretty baby, cause he sure
is a ugly man. Boy me and mama laughed.

(Conversations are going on at other tables main focus is on the center table.)

YOUNG BLOOD
Well one time around Christmas, I had this girl who I was dating and we went by my
mama’s house to eat, so my mama you know was asking her who her people is. Where
she lived, what kind of work she do. Well the girl didn’t work but she could go in a
store and half and hour later, I had 300 to 400 dollars worth of clothes. So after dinner,
my mama called me to the room as we were leaving. She said how long you gonna be
with this one? I said just till the holidays over and she’s gone. I said why mama? She
said I don’t trust that heifer, up in here casing the place like she gonna rob me. Look at
her out there, looking around for shit to steal.

I miss laughing with my mama. Let me tell you something young fellow. These people
ain’t joking around out there no more They locking people up left and right. They
doing secret indictments, they getting your Homies to tell on you, here it is I’m facing
any where from 15 to 30 years, you might as well say a life sentence. Cause I’m 42 now,
if they give me 20 years I’ll be 62 years old.
(pause)

…So you tell me what good am I going to be to anybody. Got no skills other than them

…Young Blood you got a chance to get out here after what 3 to 5 years. Do something
good with your life man. You got a woman out there, treat her with respect. Take care
of that little boy. Break the cycle of these kids growing up with no daddy. Because of
that He ends up right in here with you. I know you don’t want that. We were in a
group meeting the other day and the counselor asked this kid did he have a relative
come through here, the guy said yeah, my Dad. (cause they look alike) You see what
I’m saying. You don’t want to be getting locked up and your son in here too. That’s
messed up. And it’s not fair.

I sure hope somebody sends that fellow some type of mail or money or anything. He’s
been here over a year and he hasn’t received not one piece of mail.

I wonder if his family even knows where he is. Maybe nobody wants to be bothered
with him anymore. I wonder if he’s burnt that many bridges out there.

HISPANIC
Yo man, that’s crazy. I would lose my mind if no one from the outside was never to
write me. What could he have done to make everyone stop communicating with him?

POET
I guess some people don’t realize how important it is for a man in here to receive a
piece of mail from someone. Let along, some money on his books.

You feel all alone no mail, no nothing. People think when you’re in jail you get feed
well. The only ones who know are those who’ve been in here, or some relatives or love
one that has told them how it really is.

There was a guy who sat down here for 2 whole years no visit, no mail, and no money.
He thought he was loved by a lot of people out there who he did a lot for. A lot of
people only care when you’re in position to do back for them. Other than that they say
screw you.

People must think you gonna be in jail forever. You see that’s the good thing about a
sentence. One day it will be over and you will see those same people again, unless you
are doing a life sentence.

I sure am thankful for those of my family who see fit to think enough abut me. Times
are rough out there and to be blessed to have family or friends that would take the time
to write some words of encouragement or send a piece of money on your books is truly
a blessing.

HISPANIC
(speaks with Spanish accent)

Jo, I wish there was something I could do for the man but I got enough trouble of my
own.

WHITE GUY
Mr. Jones reminds me of a man I once read about in the newspaper who own more than
100 acres of land that was highly desirable by city officials. So council members coerced
3 men who worked for him to take five kilograms of cocaine and hid them in the stables
of his ranch. A phone call was made to police by council members, police raided the
ranch and as a result the owner was arrested and thrown in jail and the DA is trying to
give him 10 years for trafficking and distribution of cocaine that never was his. His
name was Jones and he was a wealthy man whose family probably couldn’t handle the
embarrassment of what happened and just left him alone. But that’s not good for him
because without family he could commit suicide.
(You hear sliding door sound,a man enters the POD carrying a bible, he is

So what good is it doing me to get mad?
I’m only driving myself insane

Hello Brothers, I’m Chaplin James, I’ve come today to spread the word of my Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ. If anyone would like to join me in prayer we will meet over on the
Rec Yard. Today could be the beginning for someone. You may have a heavy burden
you’ve been carrying around and you may want to give it to the Lord. You see if you
let go and let God have it, he can move mountains. He can part the seas only if you ask
him to. He said if you have the faith of a grain of a mustard seed. A mustard seed is
the tiniest seed, but can grow just like your Faith can grow, if you just give him a chance
to move in your life.
(walking through the Pod with his bible in the air)

Every opportunity you get to pray you should do so. Even if you are already praying
by yourself, you see wherever two or more are gathered together in his name He shall
be in the midst. A lot of us are carrying a lot of baggage around with us. I talked to a
young man just a few moments ago. I had been praying and talking with him now for a
few weeks, and he gave me some good news about his case. He was facing 25 years for
a crime that he admits he did. So he didn’t know how to pray so we started getting into
the word over a period of these past weeks. Now let me show you how God moves.
His Lawyer told him to take the plea of 25 years and he did, while waiting to go to
prison his mother received a letter stating that his sentence had been reduced from 25
years to 15 years, Amen. You see God moves on his time not ours. We want him to

come when we get finished praying, he doesn’t come when we want him to, but he is
always right on time, Amen. So if anyone wants God to protect them or to watch over
their family, why don’t you come to Jesus and ask him. Ask for forgiveness and don’t
be surprised if things start to change in your life.
