Haddonfield generally fared well as Hurricane Sandy
swept through early last week.
Only about 25 percent of the borough lost power, said Com-
missioner Ed Borden.
The substantial majority of the town was never without
power, Borden said.

The members of Haddonfield
American Legion Post No. 38 in-
vite the public to honor our Veter-
ans during their Veterans Day
Service in the Haddonfield Me-
morial High School Auditorium
on Monday, Nov. 12.
The service will commence
promptly at 11 a.m. and last ap-
proximately 40 minutes.
In addition to the public, local
veterans and soldiers, sailors, air-
men, and marines on active duty
or serving in the National Guard
or Reserves are invited to attend
this service.
Veterans Day is the day set
aside to thank and honor those
who have served honorably in the
military, during both times of
war and peace.
Two years ago, Post No. 38
moved their Veterans Day Serv-
ice into the HMHS Auditorium
because of inclement weather. Its
success led to an agreement be-
tween Post No. 38 and HMHS to
conduct future Veterans Day
Services in the Auditorium and
encourage students to attend the
service.
The program will include the
Pledge of Allegiance, the national
anthem, remarks by Post No. 38
Commander D.W. Janszky and
Mayor Tish Colombi, short read-
ings by selected Post officers, and
Taps performed by Tom Patton
and Tom Reiter.
Haddonfield Memorial High
School is located at 401 Kings
Hwy East.
After entering through the
front gate, visitors should pro-
ceed through the door to the left,
and past the main office. Signs
will guide visitors to the schools
auditorium.
Citizens and veterans are
urged to take an hour on Nov. 12
to honor our veterans and those
serving our country today.

Breezing past 150 dual meet
consecutive wins, the Haddon-
field Memorial High School boys
cross country team is a perennial
powerhouse.
The boroughs close proximity
helps the team prepare for the
season, said Coach Nick Baker.
And prep they do, with prac-
tices beginning in June.
We meet all summer, said
Baker.
Rather than working on a tan,
the boys work on their stamina.
When the season officially ar-
rives in late August, the mantra
becomes faster, faster, faster.
Were not trying to get in
shape. Were already in shape,
Baker said.
Living within a mile radius of
other teammates makes it easier
to meet for practices, simply
walking or riding bikes to the
school.

awareness for parents, care-
givers, school personnel and the
community.
Our meetings are held at the

from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and are
scheduled as follows:
On Tuesday, Nov. 13, there will
be a relationship development in-
tervention.
Learn about the Relationship
Development Program and how it
can help your child with Autism
Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, RAD
and other neuro-developmental
disorders.
Children with these disorders
have difficulty taking in and pro-

and efficiently. You will develop
an understanding of the brain
works and how you can imple-
ment specific strategies at home
to improve your child's ability to
take in and make meaning from
the world around them.
There will be a parent support
session on Tuesday, Dec. 11.
We are also selling 2013 Enter-

V
eterans Day traces its history
to the end of World War I.
Then known as Armistice Day,
Congress, in the mid-1950s, formally
made it Veterans Day. Its one of those
days of the year that has, or should
have, special meaning for every Ameri-
can.
The sacrifices made by the men and
women of the Armed Services are
well-documented. They protect the na-
tion every day. Without their service,
America isnt the land of the free.
We encourage everyone to not only
recognize veterans on this day, but also
to make a commitment to do some-
thing tangible in their honor.
There are numerous groups that
help veterans and their families, espe-
cially those who have fallen on hard
times. Volunteer for one of these
groups, or make a donation.
Or get involved in a different organi-
zation that is trying to better your com-
munity. Help to feed the hungry or ad-
vance research into a deadly disease.
Gather clothing and other items and
drop them off at a center that will use
them to help the less fortunate. Do
something to make a difference, to give
back to those around you who can use
a helping hand.
We are heading into the holiday sea-
son. Its the easiest time of the year to
get involved because there are so many
ways to give.
In the coming weeks, we invite
everyone who is holding a drive or
fundraiser to contact us with the de-
tails so that we can share them with
the entire community. Give us the days
and times, the drop-off locations and
the items requested, and well do the
rest.
And then we invite our readers to
jump in with generosity.
We can never say thank you too
many times to our veterans. We can
never fully repay them for what they
have done and continue to do for us.
But we can honor them by doing
what we can to make a difference in
our communities.

Downtown Haddonfield contin-
ues to be one of the most estab-
lished and flourishing business
districts in the Delaware Valley,
according to a press release from
the Partnership for Haddonfield.
Nearly a dozen businesses have
called Haddonfield home for more
than four decades and several
others have experienced so much
success in the recent years, they
decided to expand their stores.
Many business owners are con-
fident with the location of their
shops and offices in Haddonfield.
In order to provide substantial
growth for their businesses to
thrive, some have expanded their
size and product lines.
This month, The Summit Sam-
pler, a home dcor shop, complet-
ed its expansion to a larger near-
by space to become the largest
shop in Haddonfield with 7,000
square feet, twice its original size.
The expanded store features more
product lines and a 500-square-
foot fabric room and design cen-
ter.
Additional businesses that
have recently expanded in Had-
donfields shopping district in-
clude the Haddonfield Running
Company, Zs Treasures and SIX
on east. SIX on east celebrated 23
years in Haddonfield this year.
Downtown Haddonfield has a
mix of businesses that have ex-
panded due to the great success
theyve experienced here in Had-
donfield. In addition, many busi-
nesses have opened their doors to
Haddonfield shoppers for more
than 40 years - they know the for-
mula for success in our wonder-
ful downtown shopping and din-
ing district, explained Remi For-
tunato, retail coordinator for the
Partnership for Haddonfield.
Marlee Lick, a long-tenured
buyer and retail designer for the
family-owned, 40-plus-year-old
Harrisons Gifts of Distinction,
said that the shops long-term suc-
cess could be in part attributed to
the unique appeal of Downtown
Haddonfield and Harrisons
ability to keep up with ever-
changing trends.
We, like many other shops
here in Downtown Haddonfield,
offer a line of distinctive mer-
chandise along with a hometown
shopping experience that just
cant be duplicated in any shop-
ping mall or big city, she said.
In addition, we keep a close eye
on changes and trends in the gift
industry and update our invento-
ry regularly so that were always
offering the newest in-demand
merchandise, as well as lots of
unique novelties.

nesses that have called Haddon-

Its so rewarding to see gener-
ations of women enter our doors
again and again to make us a part
of their special occasions over a
lifetime, said Owner Susan
Maslowski.
Each of the nine businesses
that have been in business for 40-
plus years has helped establish
Haddonfield one of the Delaware
Valleys premier shopping desti-
nations. Hopefully, the success
stories from each of these long-
time businesses will act as an in-
spiration to all of the fantastic
new businesses that have recently
opened their doors in our down-
town, added Fortunato.

12 THE HADDONFIELD SUN NOV. 7-13, 2012
dences fell, and there were about
a dozen downed wires, he said.
At times, police did need to
block off streets due to downed
trees, but the issues were general-
ly quickly resolved, he said.
There was one automobile acci-
dent early in the storm, Borden
said.
According to Chief of Police
John Banning, on Monday, Oct.
29, at 6:45 p.m. at the intersection
of Grove Street and Hopkins
Lane, a tree that fell across the
road hit a car. The driver and
child in the car were transported
by ambulance to Virtua Hospital
in Voorhees, but their conditions
were not immediately known.
Many residents stayed indoors
through the duration of the
storm, heeding the advice of the
borough, county and state offi-
cials.
People really did hunker
down, Borden said. I think
thats one reason that we were so
fortunate.
Residents were able to stay up
to date with occurrences as they
happened through several bor-
ough bulletins on the Haddon-
fieldNJ.org website, from closings
to postponements to places to
charge their phones if needed
after the storm passed.
There is no cost estimate thus
far for the damages associated
with the storm, Borden said.
Weve been told by federal and
state officials even before the
storm to keep very careful ac-
counting of what we suffer in
terms of expenses, Borden said,
for agencies such as FEMA to in
part reimburse costs.
There were still a few trees
felled in Haddonfield as of last
Thursday, but the borough was
generally in good shape, said Bor-
den.
Our volunteers and our bor-
ough personnel really were fan-
tastic in this, he said, including
the police auxiliary and almost
all-volunteer fire company, as well
as administrative borough em-
ployees, public works and the po-
lice department.
Crews worked around the clock
to restore order, he said.
I cant say enough about them
all, Borden added.
At the borough schools,
downed trees and a loss of power
cancelled classes until last Thurs-
day.
According to Superintendent
of Schools Dr. Richard Perry,
large trees fell down, knocking
out power lines to the high school,
Bancroft School and in parts of
Cherry Hill.
As a school district, we had de-
bris (and) downed trees around
certain areas, said Perry. Anoth-
er main concern of ours was the
number of downed wires
throughout the community.
Many of those wires, he said,
were in the paths of children who
walk to school.
When classes re-convened last
week, some wires remained
down. Police, he said, monitored
those spots while children trav-
eled to and from school.
School officials met with bor-
ough officials and emergency
management prior to the storm
in preparation.
Its good to know that we have
that type of cooperation within
the community, he said.
Tatem, Elizabeth Haddon and
the high school had been targeted
to be evacuation sites, if needed,
said Perry.
Sandy was more of a disrup-
tion than Irene last year, he said,
between the power loss and
downed wires.
Were just thankful that every-
bodys safe, Perry said. Were
very pleased with how we
accomplished what we set out to
do.
And that, he said, was keeping
all students safe.
To stay up to date on borough
happenings, visit www.haddon-
fieldnj.org and follow the updates
of the school district at www.had-
donfield.k12.nj.us.
CREWS
Continued from page 1
Crews worked around the clock to restore order in borough
Drive, good coaching, parent support keys to success
Its not as inconvenient, said
Baker, as a regional school com-
petitor that pulls students from a
50-mile radius.
Top runners this season in-
clude captains Greg Halla, senior,
and John Greenberg, junior.
Halla was a middle school star
and came speeding into the high
school.
Hes having a tremendous sea-
son, said Baker.
Greenberg had humble begin-
nings when he joined the middle
school team, Baker said, but he
built himself through hard work
and a desire to be good.
Now, Greenberg and Halla both
bring great leadership and organ-
ization to the team, he said.
Bakers wife, Maureen Baker,
helps with the process at the mid-
dle school level.
As coach, she exposes the
young runners to the sport.
She gets them excited for the
possibility of being successful at
this activity, said Baker.
At that level, student athletes
generally dip
their feet in
the pools of a
plethora of
sports, from
soccer to foot-
ball to basket-
ball, while
testing the po-
tential of
being a long
distance run-
ner.
A lot of our middle school kids
just have tremendously busy
schedules, Baker said. Shes very
flexible with the schedule.
To reach full potential as a run-
ner, there must be passion in-
volved, he said, which is true for
any part of life.
Thats the biggest thing, he
said. They need to be passionate
and have a love for what theyre
doing.
If you love running, Baker ex-
plained, then the training and
practices dont feel like hard
work.
Haddonfields current streak of
wins began in September 1997.
At the time, the teams current
assistant coach, Tom Brennan,
was a sophomore in high school.
That status has helped him to
relate to the team while bringing
needed intensity and passion.
Its so great for me to have him
around, said Baker, who has
been coach since the 1975-1976
school year. It just makes my job
so much more enjoyable and
fun.
Even with countless meets
under their belts, Baker pushes
the team forward, always looking
for areas of improvement.
Keep getting better, said
Baker. Faster. The best they can
possibly be.
The ultimate goal for this sea-
son, he said, was to be the top
team in the Colonial Conference,
which they cinched in mid-Octo-
ber against rivals Haddon Town-
ship at Pennypacker Park.
At the competition, Halla was a
stand out runner for Haddonfield
with a time of 15:27.
You want to win your confer-
ence, he said. We want to be the
top team in the conference.
Our kids just performed in-
credibly well. That was very ex-
citing, Baker added.
Next on their agenda is to snag
the Group II State Championship
title on Nov. 10 at Holmdel Park,
with hopes to compete in the N.J.
Meet of Champions a week later
on Nov. 17 in Holmdel.
With 150 down, is the team
heading for 200 consecutive wins
now?
Yeah, Baker laughed. Those
runners are currently prepping
in middle school.
We have some pretty good
ones out there, he said.
The high school team is filled
with younger grade levels. There
are only three seniors this year
out of the 27 on the roster, said
Baker.
There are three keys to the
teams success, he said.
The students drives, good
coaching and plenty of parent
support.
We have great kids, he said.
