Innovation is the mother of Me-invention

Synopsis
It is the purpose of this paper to show how coaching might fill a need for motivating the Baby Boomers during life transition, and inspire them to recreate a new lifestyle. Positions have been scaled back due to the economy, unwanted retirement, empty nesters, and divorce. Aging clients find themselves searching for meaning in all of the chaos. They know they want something more from life. They still feel the need for fulfillment. Life isnt over after 50. Creating awareness is one of the most important things the client can to do achieve a new Personal Vision; however, he or she must first be in a place where they want to be aware. He or she must be open to personal change and innovation. A first step towards creating awareness is realizing what is working in our lives and what is not. We have to be very honest during this process, which can be an emotional

journey. Most of the time, deep introspection leads to deep emotion. Emotions range from excitement and joy to sadness and fear. The process should be emotional. If it is not, a new journey of self-awareness is not occurring. Key Words: Transition, Reinvention, Awareness, and Innovation

Introduction
Creativity is a powerful transformational force. On a personal level we can face big challenges and lose everything- physically, financially, and emotionally. Realizing there is also a fascinating fact about human creativity and that is, if we can tap into the creative resource within ourselves and cultivate it, we can find a way to bounce back. Resilience is one of the most incredible human capacities. Coaching those who struggle with separation, displacement, or retirement to tap into their creative thinking to ease into whatever that next phase of reinvention and renewal is for them. Coaching them to cultivate their creativity, to improve their skills so they can have more self-confidence and move forward in their reinvention and a new way of life. The key to successful reinvention lies in the capacity to use creativity intelligently. No matter what the current situation is, coaching is an invaluable source of information because it focuses on structures that make change and success possible.

A New Beginning
Coaching can address the want to move forward with a business idea, or just wanting to try something new, and allows clients to see an entry way into this very volatile and uncertain market. Before beginning to coach about reinvention and creating opportunities for clients, the coach might explain the power of mindset. The client must fully believe that change is critical and the only way to succeed. Full commitment and positive thinking is key to persisting through this process. No one is saying it is easy, but the idea that the client has the power to implement change, and make something happen, should be enough to get him or her going. If the client is still unsure about the concept of renewing himself or herself maybe they are not ready. Coaching can help the client find their strengths to use them to drive the reinvention process. Coaching provides the client with a way to get perspective and gain focus. A coach will work with the client to put each idea into action through its successful completion while keeping an eye on maintaining balance in life. With a coach the client is more motivated and the coach can accelerate the process of moving forward... Using some of Mark and Angel Hacks practical thoughts pertaining to life and general improvement can help to shift perspective on hesitations and underlying beliefs about moving forward.

5. I can follow my dreams someday, but right now I need to buckle down and be responsible. Make today the first day of the rest of your new life. 6. Im in big trouble if it doesnt work out. 7. Thats impossible! Its only impossible if you never do anything about it. 8. Only a lucky few make it. 9. I might fail. And failing is bad. Failures are simply stepping-stones to success. 10. I dont have access to the right resources. Its not about having the right resources; its about exploiting the resources you do have access to 11. I need more money saved before I can take the first step. You dont need more money. You need a plan 12. I dont need any help. Its smarter to go after it alone. 13. That sounds like a lot of hard work. Success in life hinges on one key point: Finding hard work you love doing. As long as you remain true to yourself and follow your own interests, values and dreams, you can find success through passion. Perhaps most importantly, you wont wake up a few years from now working in a career field you despise, wondering How the heck am I going to do this for the next 30 years?

Reinvent-Now
The following are power questions to help get on track to reinvention: 1.What are you displeased with right now? 2.What do you feel that you are lacking? 3.How many hours in a week are you willing to commit to your reinvention? 4.What are your biggest fears? Talk about desire with the client, this is the time to dream, have client begin to put it all down in writing.

1.What do you love to do? 2.What are you good at? 3.What are you passionate about? 4.What do you want and what do you need? 5.What dont you like to do? 6.If you worked previously or work now what did you / do you do? 7.Do you want to continue to use those skills? 8.What are you willing to give up in order to make time in your life for something new?

Steps to Reinvention
Client can use a notebook to preserve their new ideas as they occur. Coach to do so without judging them. A Perfect example or practice is what Julia Camron Author of The Artists Way calls morning papers. There are many ways to capture new ideas. The client might have an idea in their sleep and wake up and write it down. Or they might have a thought during the day. This is important to do in the moment. Recommend not listening to the self-talk, criticism, or someone elses voice while still generating that can shut someone right down. Routinely capturing is done upon awakening, but use it as a tool anytime. Dont believe that there is just no time to be creative, encourage the client to do some simple thing like paying attention to thoughts and capturing them, through journaling or just writing them down. How about leaving a message for yourself on your voicemail? Dont let perfectionism keep your client from being their creative selves that they may fear. Just know its important to capture new ides without evaluating them.

STEP ONE: Capturing

Capturing is based on the capacity to use creativity intelligently, being on a mission to promote brainstorming, and ideation on paper. Seeing words and ideas on paper, makes for refining thoughts and allows for greater creativity and better solutions. Client can use their journal or a notebook for this process. Look into the weekly schedule and help your client find wasted hours: hours spent watching TV, gossiping on the phone, reading tabloid, browsing the internet whatever it is they do. Help them to find just two hours a week and devote them to a creative project. Finding that extra time can sometimes be an obstacle. Recommend waking up half an hour earlier or going to bed a half hour later and by doing this four days a week, magic! You have two hours. The mind can resist, and protest, that, I dont get it, I dont

have two hours Dont argue about that, thats not what we do. If the client tells us they cant find two hours, it could mean there is fear or an underlying belief. Everyone is afraid of something, but keep moving. Only the client can do it. If theyre not ready thats okay the world still goes on.

STEP TWO: Broadening

The more diverse your knowledge, the more interesting the interconnections- creativity can be boosted simply by learning interesting new things. New ideas emerge when old ones become interconnected; thats where all creativity comes from. Ah ha! That means that one way to prime the creativity pumps to produce interesting and novel ideas is to broaden ones knowledgethe broader the better. Dont take yet another course on French cooking; take a course on cartooning, or on 12th century architecture, or on nuclear physics! The more diverse the knowledge, the more creative the ideas will be. Be curious the more research, the more ones expertise is developed. The exploration allows the client to create a project and find ideas about what they found. Begin to manage physical and social environments. The more interesting and diverse the things and people around you, the more interesting the ideas become.

STEP THREE: Challenging

Having a problems to solve, in tough situations, multiple behaviors compete with one another, and their interconnections create new behaviors and ideas. Be productive and disciplined. The client may have lots of ideas that dont work but the point is they have lots of ideas. The word challenge could be read in two ways in two ways; the need to challenge oneself, and second, that it is important to realize that society, the audience, for your new self or work will need time to get used to the change. Family, friends, and even coworkers, may initially not want to reward the client or recognize the change., and that could prove challenging. Its important not to become discouraged, just keep at it! Challenges and interruptions can be to refocus. Creative individuals think of failure as a new opportunity; what went wrong? Let me try something else, and move forward with it. Epstein http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Epstein In the laboratory, failure also produces a phenomenon called resurgence- the emergence of behaviors that used to be effective in that situation- that leads to a competition among behaviors and new interconnections. In other words, failure actually stimulates creativity directly, it really is valuable. Here are some statements about creativity that might be useful in a handout.

Creativity is Surfing the wave of change Creating the future Finding a needle in the haystack of mundane ideas Looking at the world as if it were new Moving forward in a positive direction Creativity requires New information Vision, passion, courage The energy that comes from commitment Creativity feeds on Big Challenges Freedom to explore Creativity is like Physical fitness- talking about it does not make it happen No risk no innovation Concluding Remarks Life is a series of turning points- an accumulation of little action steps that lead to surprises and adventures. Possibilities can be looked as different paths on an open road. One path might lead to the status quo and the other to the many other possibilities in life. The creative potential is always there, and the client is the one making the decision to make it happen (or not) through their actions. Coaching for creativity and reinvention is a wonderful method. What really counts is what the client will do next. There really is no rush, by starting to envision possibilities and new solutions to reinvention, action is taken. It doesnt mean the client knows exactly what they want to do; it means they have moved from trying into action.
