Civic Engagement and Journalism Initiative at USC Annenberg

Welcome to Reporter Corps! Reporter Corps is an opportunity to engage with your community, make a difference through your reporting, and build new skills with the support of our editorial team, mentors, and researchers. You will be trained in journalistic ethics and practice, multimedia storytelling skills, and how your local government works so that you can report on your own community. Reporter Corps is made possible with the support of USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and the McCormick Foundation. Collaboration with USC Students USC journalism graduate students, on a project basis, will be recruited to work with members of Reporter Corps and sometimes be paired with them. This process should be mutually beneficial, with the reporters serving as guides to the communities and the graduate students providing added reporting skills. Mentorship Reporters will be assigned to one professional journalist during the six month program. Journalists will serve as mentors and provide guidance, support, and feedback on stories and ideas. You are required to meet with your mentor at least once a month while maintaining communication via email or phone. Introductions will take place the week of October 15. As a member of Reporter Corps, your success depends on completion of all trainings, maintaining communication with your team, building relationships within your community, and meeting the following program requirements: Coordinate a meeting with your mentor every month Produce at least one story within beat per week (20-25 stories by April) On-call for general assignment one day per week Produce one audio slideshow per program Produce one I am Alhambra feature per program Produce one social issue (immigration, race) story per program Attend staff meetings on Thursdays at 2pm Attend City Council meetings every other Monday at 7pm Attend community contributor meetings the first Monday of month at 7pm Attend seminars the third Monday of every month at 7pm Participate in quarterly public event to share reportage with community Enroll in Poynter courses for professional development - complete two per month You have been given access to the Reporter Corps calendar via your Alhambra Source email addresses. Author, journalist, and editor Jesse Katz breaks down the four primary identities every writer needs to inhabit. Audio, Photography, Audio and Photography Multimedia journalist Lauren M. Whaley will talk about using pictures and sound to tell a story.
