SSS members are currently discussing plans with Dr. Yana Hashamova, director of the Slavic Center at Ohio State University. I will inform you of any and all future developments. As you no doubt already know, I have set up an SSS e-mail list with the help of Bowdoin Colleges Information Technology department in order to facilitate communication within our society. It will be used only to disseminate important information of general interest to the Societys membership. Please refrain from using it for personal announcements and solicitations! SSS PRESIDENTS MESSAGE


The Society for Slovene Studies will be well represented at this months ASEEES convention in New Orleans. No fewer than seven Slovenerelated panels have been scheduled on a rich variety of topics, from World War II partisan songs to legal and economic history. As usual, we will be joined by a number of distinguished speakers from Slovene institutions. Please note the time of this years SSS business meeting: Friday, 16 November, at 1:45 P.M. Finally, dont forget the Central Europeanists reception on Friday evening. Details on all these events appear below. Plans for marking the Societys 40th anniversary are taking shape. We hope to hold something in conjunction with the annual convention of the Association for the Study of Nationalities, which will be held at Columbia U. in New York on 18 20 April 2013. This will likely be a scholarly panel on Slovene-related topics, a reception, or both. This event will be a major topic of

After a one-year hiatus, the East Central Europeanists Reception will be held again at the upcoming ASEEES convention in New Orleans. All eight participating societies unanimously agreed on the importance of this event during discussions in Washington. The event will be co-chaired by Aida Vidan, of the Croatian Studies Association, with out-going cochair Veronica Aplenc, Society for Slovene Studies.

The Societys Business Meeting will be held at the ASEEES conference on Friday, 1:453:30 P.M. in Preservation Hall Studio 10. All members at the convention are encouraged to attend.

The Society for Slovene Studies gratefully acknowledges contributions to its special funds. The Printing Fund was established in the early 1980s with a bequest from the estate of Mary Molek. The Endowment Fund was enlarged in the early 1990s with a bequest from the estate of John Nielsen. The Rado L. Lencek and Joseph Velikonja funds honor these two founding members of the SSS. CALL FOR PAPERS: YOUNG SCHOLARS PANEL 2013


For the past twelve years the Society has sponsored a panel featuring younger scholars in Slovene Studies. The sessions have been very well received and provide an opportunity for the Society to learn about new researchers in the field. If you are currently doing graduate work or have recently completed a graduate degree, and wish to prepare a paper in a years time, at the 2013 meeting, please contact SSS executive council member Gregor Kranjc (gregorkranjc@ hotmail.com).

The submission deadline for the 2013 Graduate Student Prize is 27 September 2013. The prize is $1,000. Please see www.slovenestudies.com for further details. The Rose Marie Princ Scholarship for a Graduate Student will be available to a graduate student majoring exclusively in the field of Education in alternate years. The next award will be offered in April 2014 for the 201415 academic year. The SWU Scholarship Foundation is also offering $1,000 and $2,000 college student scholarships for the 201314 academic year. Applicants for these awards must hold membership in the Slovenian Union of America three years prior to application, and must be attending an accredited college or university full time. ***** Slovenian Womens Union Scholarship Foundation announces the Josef Princ Memorial Scholarship for a Graduate Student for Academic Year 201314 in the amount of $40,000
The Josef Princ Memorial Scholarship for a graduate student will be available to a full time graduate student majoring exclusively in Science, Mathematics, or Engineering during the 201314 school year. The Scholarship will be awarded in April 2013. This scholarship is open to full-time graduate students who have one parent, grandparent, or great grandparent of Slovenian ancestry, and will be offered on alternate years. The next award will be offered during the 201617 academic year, April 2016 being the award date. Josef Princ, a native of Velika Bukovica, Illirska Bistrica, Slovenia, graduated with an engineering degree from the University of Ljubljana and continued his studies in Germany. After immigrating to the United States in l957, he continued his studies and worked for Nichols Home Shield as their chief designer and acquired a number of patents. He also was a designer for Anderson Window Company. Josef and his wife Rose Marie were married for 36 years, before he died in l999. Josef loved being an American although he was also very proud of his heritage.

Some previous events include lectures and talks by Slovenian academics, businesspeople and politicians (including the prime minister and president), social events (wine tastings, networking receptions, dinners), cultural events (music performances, poetry recitals, movie screenings), trips to Slovenia and many more. ***** AATSEEL conference 2013 and 2014


The annual conference of AATSEEL, the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages, is held on the first ThursdaySunday following 2 January each year. The 2013 conference is in Boston. In 2014, the AATSEEL conference will be held in Chicago. The Society for Slovene Studies is an affiliate of AATSEEL.

***** THE INSTITUTE FOR SLOVENIAN STUDIES OF VICTORIA Valvasor Studies Online - J. V. Valvasor, 17th century Encyclopedian
In 2012 the Institute for Slovenian Studies of Victoria Inc. undertook the translation of Valvasorjev Zbornik (1989) into English. The translation by Aleksandra L. Ceferin has been completed and is in the process of being prepared for publication as an E-book in partnership with Zavod Neuropolis in Ljubljana. The project is funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia. Valvasorjev Zbornik, which will be titled Valvasoricon in English translation, is a collection of academic papers on various aspects of Slava vojvodine Kranjske (The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola) by foremost Slovenian scholars, covering various fields of expertise. The papers (29) were delivered at the Valvasor Symposium and published in Ljubljana on the occasion of 300th anniversary of the publication of Valvasors work. The gifting of the rare facsimile collection Iconotheca Valvasoriana, of European masters artwork collected by Valvasor, from the Government of Slovenia to the State Library of Victoria Melbourne held on 27 September 2010, was a landmark event in Australia; on the occasion of which the website www.valvasor.org was launched. It provides information in the English language about the life and work of the 17th century European polymath, and includes 6

***** SLOVENE ORGANIZATION IN GREAT BRITAIN


http://www.aatseel.org/ The LSEsu Slovenian Society unites Slovenian students at the London School of Economics and elsewhere in London and the UK. It was founded in 2004 as Slovenia was joining the EU and as such has the longest tradition among Slovenian student societies in the UK. Events are organised throughout the year in both London and Slovenia, and are primarily aimed at students and recent graduates. The society has a good relationship with the Slovenian Embassy in

study resources - a digital library and a collection of recent academic studies. The initiative was funded by the Office for Slovenes Abroad of the Republic of Slovenia. The project aims to foster knowledge about the encyclopedian Janez Vajkard (Johann Weihard) Valvasor, and to promote dissemination of scholarly information on Slovenian studies in general and Valvasor studies in particular. It is also intended to stimulate interest in further academic research into an exceptional contribution to knowledge of the 17th-century history of Slovenian people and Slovenian language. ISSV Inc. is an educational organisation founded in 1976 to support and promote Slovenian studies in Australia.
