2. What was your favorite and least favorite part of the internship?
My favorite part of being an intern at IMW was the ability to dip into so many different aspects of the communications industry. I did everything from trafficking and proofing advertisements to writing press releases and just about everything in between. Although making coffee wasn't typically the highlight of my day, my least favorite part was actually just the downtime. Because IMW is a small agency, everyone was pretty on top of their jobs and there were times when I just had to hang out.
At the second meeting of the quarter, Mary Verdin and Whitney Diaz of Verdin spoke to PRSSA. Both PR professionals discussed their recent rebranding and showed students their current client campaigns. Mary Verdin stressed the importance of professionalism in the workplace and offered valuable resume tips.
Kory Raftery, PG&E Spokesperson, held a crisis communications workshop on the third meeting of the quarter demonstrating the importance of PR and having a crisis communication plan in an organization. PRSSA members were split into groups and given the chance to formulate their own crisis communications plan for their specic PG&E related crisis. Students gained hands-on experience dealing with crisis planning and response that they can apply in their future careers.
On the fourth meeting of the quarter, PRSSA board members Kaleigh Teskey, Natalie Stone, and Amy Davidson shared their experiences at National Conference. The PRSSA seniors discussed ways to build networking skills, how to perfect a resume, and what to expect at National Conference.
Renoda Campbell, Cal Poly Greek Life and Multicultural Center Advisor, spoke to PRSSA at the last meeting of the quarter about her experience in the entertainment industry. She gave members valuable tips on how to get into the industry and what it takes to be a PR professional in that competitive environment. Campbell also coached students on how to handle a crisis in the industry and on the steps it takes to build lasting relationships.
