Dear Friends, It has been another year of growth and development for Enterprise Farm, and we are weeks away from one of the largest maize harvests weve ever had. Our goals at Enterprise Farm are still the same. We desire to provide jobs and promote protable and sustainable agriculture in the community. We demand excellence and transparency in our farming practices and business endeavors. We look to increase New Hope Ugandas ability to provide for itself. And ultimately believe the work we do is a testimony to the children of New Hope and a blessing to the community. I invite you to look through this report, share in the excitement, and prayerfully consider partnering with us as we continue to impact New Hope Uganda and the greater community.

Farmers Cooperative
Uganda has the incredible potential to feed all
of East Africa. However, a common problem continent wide has been market linkage between all aspects of production. Over the years, Ugandas public sector has tried its hand in farmer cooperatives with little success. But, a cooperative in the hands of the private sector is very resilient. If something doesnt work, it learns quickly from its failures and seeks alternatives. After many discussions with local farmers and hearing the pains of the farming in Uganda it is important that a vision for Twegate {we unite} Farmers Cooperative be established. After the airing of various programs about poverty eradication on Musana FM, many people from the community have called and wanted to know how they can unite together for the benet of the Ugandan farmer. We are praying that the necessary leaders would arise and continue to push forth the efforts already set forth by Twegate Farmers Cooperative.

Twegate

Vegetable Gardens
As part of our overall vision, Enterprise would like to begin forming a social business that would solve many of the above mentioned issues ,and we see vegetable gardening as the avenue. Because many in the community have small portions of land, vegetable growing is an ideal way to maximize space. Enterprise has 3 acres of vegetables gardens plus a nursery for seedlings and more sunsensitive produce. We recently started a centralized selling location called The Forge, where we sell our own fruits and vegetables alongside produce from community gardens. The Investment Year program are heavily involved in the daily operations and helped fund a refrigerator and freezer where we can begin to blanch, freeze, juice, and further add value to our produce. The Forge project has really taken off since its introduction. And many people have utilized the simple coordination between farmers, processors, and retail.

Fish Project
Early this year we utilized a bulldozer that was
moving through our district and created our fourth and nal sh pond. We are in the process of leveling the sidewalls and banks of the pond in efforts to stock this year. The growth of our tilapia have been slower then we had expected, which have delayed our expected returns. Still, thousands of sh await for harvest at the end of the year. The sh ponds also inhabit ducks, chickens, numerous banana plants, citrus trees, passion fruit vines, and macadamia nut trees which are planted around the ponds. We have begun harvesting the fruits and have been selling them at our local shop.

Integrated

Piggery Project
Our focus is to buy and provide feed efcient breeds i.e. Large White, Combra, Yorkshire to the New Hope and greater community. We rst introduced these exotic breeds to Enterprise Farm in early 2008. Since that time we have grown internally to house over 100 animals. We still desire to add a butchery unit, where we can select, season, smoke and package choice cuts of meat. In order to do this, we are looking for people with the right skills , training and experience to make this a reality and New Hope Uganda.

Land Clearing
The Farm only utilizes half of its land. While
God provided the funds to clear an additional 20 acres of tillable land, we still have an additional 45 acres as unproductive bush. Our goal is for the entire farm to be productive and managed by the end of 2013. Most of this land is cleared by hand. When clearing the land by hand there are three phases. The rst phase is bush whacking: Men cut down the thick underbrush with pangas (machetes), pile it, and often burn it. The second phase is tree selection: We often allow the nice straight hardwoods to stand; however, we uproot the trash trees. This is done by digging around each tree and using an axe to cut the roots one by one until the weight of the tree causes it to fall. It is then cut in manageable pieces and either sold as rewood or placed in piles to make charcoal. The total cost to clear an acre of land is roughly around $300 from start to nish. We do receive some of that back through rewood and timber sales. Our goal is to clear 45 acres by the end of 2013, which means we need to raise or seek a loan for $13,500.

Dairy Project
In
May of 2012, we completed a structure that holds ten milking cows in a bedded tie stall barn. Around the barn, we cleared a 7-acres exercise yard and grazing paddock for these milk cows. We would like to continue to push our dairy project in order to provide natural fertilizers (cow manure) for our crop and vegetable land soils, as well as meet the milk needs of our primary and secondary schools. To make this happen, we desire to ll our barn with an additional ve cows, add a forage chopper (in order to maintain a minimal-grazing feeding system), and purchase stainless steel milking buckets and necessary lters to ensure good sanitation. We are also looking at plans to produce enough milk to sell added value products such as yogurt and cheese. As well as testing the economic viability of a simple methane extractor that could provide bio-gas for lanterns and cooking, instead of the common consumption of rewood.

Help Enterprise Farm Continue to Grow

Pray God would be gloried in our abundance. Tell people about New Hope Uganda and the work of Enterprise Farm. Consider a rst-time nancial gift. (see back page)

Our Workforce
We
currently employ 25 workers. During our pond construction phase, we contracted an additional 25 workers over the course of 3-months. All in all, labor constitutes a signicant amount of Enterprise Farms expenses, especially when calculated as a percentage of overall sales. employer rst. We want to continue to give our workers fair wages, but it has been hard as ination has been as high as 18.7%, food prices are soaring, and the government has mandated workers pay into the NSSF (National Social Security Fund). We daily feed our workers with breakfast and lunch, and we supply Identication cards and gum boots on a yearly basis. We hope to give each employee an Enterprise Farm embroidered overalls or apron to increase the Farms professionalism and care of our workforce. In actuality, Enterprise has existed, up until this point, as a community

The Road Ahead

The farm is growing, and despite hard lessons
learned along the way, we are seeing amazing progress. Our desire is that the farm would operate at the highest level of excellence and efciency. The farm is in a transition period and is shifting from a community work project towards a more commercial model. As our piggery and sh projects grow, and our dairy cows increase, we will add necessary protein into the local diets. Likewise, as our vegetable gardens yield and we pursue a local farmers cooperative, it will help reduce poverty and add necessary vitamins and minerals into local diets. Thank you for taking the time to read this report. Please prayerfully consider partnering with us as a way to effectively empower the Kasana community and New Hope Uganda, ultimately ghting poverty within the region.
