Literacy Bag Reflection

INTASC and NAEYC Standard: Principle #2: The teacher understands how children learn and develop, and can provide learning opportunities that support their intellectual, social and personal development. NAEYC Standard 1.Promoting child development and learning 4b. Using developmentally effective approaches 4d. Building meaningful curriculum This artifact is a family literacy bag produced in my pre-primary semester. The family literacy bag was designed intentionally for the interests of a specific student and her needs. The literacy bag was taken home by one student where they read quality literature about the zoo and completed activities that related to the book. First, my mentor teacher and I selected a student who we felt would benefit from enrichment actives. I then talked to the student about her interests and favorite books. She told me how she loves the zoo and animals. After the discussion, I decided on a zoo themed literacy bag. I researched zoo books and selected quality books that would lend themselves to coorisponding enrichment literacy activities. I wanted to make the games beneficial for the student so I reviewed her assessments to decide what skills would be appropriate to introduce. The literacy bag covered rhyming words, creative writing skills, sequencing, color word recognition. The student completed the literacy bag with her mother and returned the bag and completed material to me. The relationship between the selected NAEYC and INTASC standard and the literacy bag correspond because it provides a great opportunity to include the family in the literacy of their child. The literacy bag promotes child development and effective approaches to learning. I learned the value of aligning my instruction to the interests of the students. Students are more engaged in learning when their interests are met. It is also important to differentiate lesson plans to meet the needs of each individual child to promote the love of learning and to keep each student challenged. After, reviewing the assessment and survey I decided that the games were developmentally appropriate for the student. She was able to complete all activities successfully and was challenged. The child had some difficulty matching the rhyming words. I would modify the words to less complex words and then move into more challenging words. The students impact from the literacy bag was positive. The student had the opportunity to learn more about the zoo and can read future zoo books with the resources provided. She was able to enrich her literacy skills by completing the activities in the bag.
