Introduction A Steel Service Center buys steel products in large quantities from producing mills and holds the material in inventory until sold to a customer. When a service center sells steel it will perform any processing the customer requests, load the steel and deliver it to the user. Service Centers usually offer varying degrees of material "pre-processing." Pre-processing involves basic cutting services, such as sawing, shearing, and shape burning to cut material to a size and/or shape that is either immediately usable by the customer, or greatly reduces the customer's time to make the steel usable. The type, quantity, and sophistication of pre-processing services offered by a particular Service Center are determined by the Service Center's product and customer mix. But about seventy percent of the metal passing through Service Centers undergoes some form of pre-production processing, such as slitting, shearing, sawing, grinding, flame cutting, coil coating, and cutting-to-length. The existence of Steel Service Centers allows the steel user to have huge inventories readily available while only paying for the steel they need, when they need it. This reduces or eliminates the need for end users to tie up capital in inventory, pre-processing equipment, processing personnel, and trucks.

Demand for processed steel: Abundance of mineral resources in the Chotanagpur Plateau has inspired a lot small and medium sized manufacturing companies in the region. The importance of processed steel in the Indian market can be gauged by the fact that Indias biggest steel producer is also its biggest player in the processing and distribution of steel. Currently, Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Limited (TSDPL) operates at a capacity of 2 million tonnes. The automobile industry has reinvented itself over the past 25 years. The grip that North American and (to a lesser extent) European manufacturers had, has eroded by strong competition from their Asian counterparts. Given the cost advantages India offers, more and more global automobile and component players are scaling up their presence in this country. Few major key findings like per head disposal income in India is growing at CAGR of 12.11%, car stock per 1000 population is expected to increase at a CAGR of 9.14% and new passenger car registration is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.41% indicate that India is becoming the next Auto hub.The challenge here is not that the major OEMs are approaching this country in virtue of its population growth, low labour rate and the escalating economy but whether this country can add value to their supply chain. Can good quality raw materials be provided? Can they provide them the quantity they demand and yet practise Just in Time (JIT)? This is a time where the need of a Steel Service Centre arises Construction sector is the second largest industry after agriculture. The sector is witnessing sharp growth as a result of large investments being made in roads, power, airports and other infrastructure areas. The real estate sector, especially the commercial, residential and retail is growing by leaps and bounds. Virtually every large multinational - including BlueStar, Samsung, LG, Philips, Electrolux, Whirlpool, among others - has set up production facilities in India to manufacture appliances. The overall trend towards higher foreign participation in this sector has also translated into government reducing levies and duties. For instance, duties on air conditioners have come down to 16 per cent from the all time high of 40 per cent. Besides, consumers have benefited hugely as they now have products that meet global quality standards as well as offer more consumer-friendly features such as energy efficiency.A combination of changing lifestyles, higher disposable income, greater product awareness and affordable pricing has been instrumental in changing the pattern of consumer expenditure. The consumer durables industry, which includes white goods, televisions, VCD and DVD players, and audio systems, has been one of the segments to experience increased demand. Surely, there is an increasing demand for processed steel. But also interesting might be the Steve Jobs philosophy of the customer not knowing that he needs a product/ service. It is only after such an option is made available that the customer realises its true significance and worth. The Steel Processing Centre might be such an option for the Indian market as there might be potential users who are unknowingly craving for these services.

Major competitors in the sector: 1. Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Limited (TSPDL): Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Limited is wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Steel. The processing activities that Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Limited facilitates are Serial No. 1 Process Name Description of the process

Slitting

Cutting a sheet of steel into narrower strips to match customer needs. Because steel mills have limited flexibility as to the widths of the sheet that they produce, service centres normally will cut the sheet for the customer. Process that cleans steel coil of its rust, dirt and oil so that further work can be done to the metal. Through a continuous process, the steel is uncoiled and sent through a series of hydrochloric acid baths that remove the oxides (rust). The steel sheet is then rinsed and dried. Process to uncoil sections of flat-rolled steel and cut them into a desired length. Product 10

3. Vedant Steel Processing Center (VSPC): Vedant Steel Processing Center (VSPC) is a steel coil process center established in 2010 near Haridwar, (Uttarakhand) VSPC is the FIRST process center that entered in the Uttarakhand market, one of the most promising emerging markets in India. VSPC started its first commercial production in January 2010, with the mission of ensuring a stable supply to Auto Mobile Segment & Home Appliances of Steel Sheets to the vendors of Hero Honda, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Godrej, Genus, Havells, LG etc. COIL PROCESSING Cut-To-Length VSPC's various cut-to-length leveling lines convert coil into sheet and plate. VSPC employs several models and sizes of cut-to-length leveling lines for the highest quality and efficiency possible. These fully automatic, high-speed, cut-to-length lines employ levelers to flatten coil as it moves through the line. A heavy-duty shear cleanly cuts the sheet to specification, and then provides edge conditioning.Light-gauge cut-to-length leveling lines also include decoiling systems, heavy-duty levelers, PVC plastic applicators, precision shearing assemblies, and highly advanced automatic stackers. The pneumatic-driven plastic 17

applicators provide superior protection for cut sheets of cold rolled, coated, stainless, and aluminum -- eliminating possible surface damage during fabrication. And the automatic stacking and conveying system ensures that each order is precisely cut, protected, inspected, and packaged all on the same line. Slitting Slitting involves selecting a master coil of a given width and passing it through circular knives separated by spacers. The knives act as a rotary shear, slitting the coil to a desired width. After the material passes through the knives and has been slit, each width is recoiled separately. VSPC can slit coil up to 4mm thick by 1600mm wide. Blanking Blanking can be considered a step beyond the conventional cut-to-length line in terms of both speed and accuracy. The process allows for slit coil to be leveled and cut-tolength in narrow widths and much closer tolerances than can be achieved by shearing. Its high speed and superior accuracy make VSPC's blanking operation especially well suited for precision jobs involving a high number of repeat parts. SHEARING Shearing is a basic first operation in which a shear, using an angled moving blade, cuts progressively across the sheet in a guillotine-like action. Large, simple parts, such as triangles, trapezoids, or rectangles, lend themselves best to the shearing process. In any shearing operation, the cut must extend all the way across the piece. VSPC uses both manually controlled and computer controlled shears. Both provide quality parts, but computer numerically controlled (CNC) technology is especially effective on close tolerance work. To increase yield and decrease turnaround time and excess scrap, VSPC utilizes nesting software. Once parts are sheared, they can be bundled and delivered to our customers, or can continue on to secondary processing such as drilling, punching/notching, painting, or a number of other operations. TUBE PROCESSING VSPC's dedicated Tube Processing Center provides complete and comprehensive services to meet an ever-increasing variety of customers' needs. CNC benders can easily handle steel and non-ferrous pipe and tubing in round, square, and rectangular shapes-and in a wide range of dimensions. These extremely advanced machines (in addition to traditional manually operated equipment) are fast, accurate, and efficient; and our tube processing personnel are highly experienced in their operation. This combination of people and technology-supported by an extensive quality control systemensures both uniformity of parts and compliance with your specifications on any given order. The list of VSPC's tube processing capabilities is constantly growing, and is driven by our customers' specific requirements and requests. Current capabilities include: bending, rolling, end finishing, punching, notching, drilling, high-speed cutting, deburring, expanding. 18

Applications range from motorcycle handles, silencer tubes, car/ three wheelers/ tractors seat frames hospital utility carts, display racks for soft drinks, and truck parts to roll guards for lawn mowers, theatrical staging, and football training devices. The possibilities are endless. VSPC has the equipment and expertise to develop solutions to virtually all types of tube processing needs.
