Round Rock ISD 5E Lesson Plan Teacher: Cori Luttrell Date: 11/13/12 Subject area / course / grade level:

: Speech Therapy K-5 Materials: grade appropriate short story, conversation topic flash cards, flip video camera or webcam Vocational standard: Maintaining a topic Lesson objective(s): To participate in more engaging conversations with other individuals Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs: The varying grade levels will create a situation in which I have to alter teaching strategies depending on the student. For the younger elementary students, I will use a more detailed approach when defining vocabulary. I will also involve the parents more for the younger elementary ages, as far as any work the child is assigned to do outside of the session. ENGAGEMENT I will use brief, fun activities in the beginning of the lesson to introduce the meaning of eye contact, attentive listening, relevant questions, and personal connections. First, we will participate in a staring contest. I will then explain the meaning of eye contact through the activity. Then, I will read a short story aloud, and ask detailed questions following. After discussing how many of the questions the student answered correctly, I will ask how they utilized attentive listening in the activity. Using the flash card, we will then practice asking relevant questions. With each topic, the student will have to formulate a relevant question. After each flash card, we will discuss whether the question the student asked was relevant and why. Finally, to help define the concept of personal connections, I will first provide an example personal connection to a selected topic, and then I will have the student do the same. EXPLORATION Now that we have defined all of the major aspects of maintaining a topic, the student and I will have a conversation that we will videotape. Before beginning the recording, I will provide the student with the important reminders for maintaining a topic in conversation. We will then analyze and critique the conversation. EXPLANATION The student will repeat back to me what our key vocabulary of the lesson means and why each aspect is critical in maintaining a topic. ELABORATION I will ask the student for some examples of situations in which they would want or need to maintain a topic in a conversation. EVALUATION The students will be assigned a hands-on homework assignment in which they will take a video of one conversation they have at home. It can be with a parent, friend, siblingwhomever they feel the most comfortable with. The student will be asked to analyze 1
