Poultry and pig farming have not much to say for confirming their social and economic role in many regions across Brazil. These activities have been historically significant, efficient and capable of adjusting in general, more rapidly than other segments, for their production cycle to market oscillations. They obviously also suffer from the global financial downturns, which have lately been rather frequent; but we can take it that their capacity to react and act are no secret to society in general. Therefore, if the poultry and pig farming scenarios and their countless niches have reached imposing proportions, the performance in 2011 corroborates all these enthusiastic statements. In terms of production and sales, in the imposition of credentials and outstanding features in domestic and foreign trade, the meats of these two segments continue celebrating records. In the case of pig farming, the great partnership lies in the domestic market, seeing that Brazilians are potential consumers of these items. In poultry farming, foreign clients have long given in to the Brazilian competence in serving items of excellent quality, and this firm belief could trigger uninterrupted progress to the indices of the entire chain. Like in other agriculture sectors, the birds and hogs alone, could never achieve such expertise and such acknowledgement. For this to turn viable, a vast array of agribusiness partners must get involved, with equal skill and efficiency, year after year. These are the agents involved, for example, with research works, phytosanitry concerns, who strictly ensure the maintenance of an environmentally safe profile, along with genetic and food security; or with the production of grain, particularly soybean and corn, indispensable in the daily diet. Also to be taken into consideration is the extremely different industry-producers integration model, a system, which, among so many unquestionable merits, paves the way for circulating any type of information and, therefore, for speedy adjustments between one link and the other. All parties concerned are partners in this production, processing, distribution and commercialization complex, allowing for the products of the two chains to be offered to the consumers the way they always wanted to have them. All this could be summarized into entrepreneurial excellence, but should, without any doubt, be referred to as organization. And it is this spirit of organization that all over the country makes the wishes and interests of the chain, in the private environment, rapidly reach the public realm. This flow allows for correct decisions and the immediate implementation of policies that keep the sector on track, without any further turbulence. For these factors, in two segments that have pride in making strides, including the appeal of their products in the daily diets, what also stands to reason is a taste of more and more.

EXCEEDING expectations
Positive results were reaped by the poultry sector in 2010 and, in the first half of 2011, growth expectations were exceeded
Brazilian poultry operations reaped good results until June 2011. Broiler meat exports amounted to 1.928 million tons, representing an increase of 6.8% from the previous period. Financial returns were even bigger in comparison to the same months in 2010. The shipments brought in US$ 3.999 billion, up 28.5%, according to data released by the Brazilian Poultry Union (Ubabef). Cautious, the chief executive officer of the entity, Francisco Turra, admits the rising trend, which outstripped all projections for 3% to 5% higher volumes. Nonetheless, the sector continues threatened by the high value of the real against the dollar. The difference between the two currencies jeopardizes the competitiveness of the product in the international marketplace and discourages foreign sales. From January to June 2010, the dollar fell 10.36% against the real. Turra regrets the fact that the exchange rate has prevented an even bigger increase of the Brazilian market, as the international market experienced higher demand. Furthermore, national poultry operations face high production costs. Prices for a sack of corn, a major ingredient in poultry feed, went up by 47% and 111% in the main sales outlets, from January 2010 to June 2011. A way out, in the opinion of the official, would be an intervention by the federal government, giving priority to domestic corn supplies. Very cautious, Ubabef estimates the same growth rate for the exports, from 3% to 5%, for the producDP OF THE SECTOR tion of broiler meat in 2011. The BrazilREPRESENTS 1.5% OF THE ian Association of Meat Chick Producers TOTAL OF THE COUNTRY, (Apinco) concluded that the Country GENERATING R$ 36 BILLION had produced 1.089 million tons in the first half of 2011, representing an increase of 4.61%. This volume is estimated on the basis of the production of meat chicks, surveyed by Apinco, on a monthly basis. It is also based on average productivity rates of the market.

OBSTCLE SURMOUNTED In 2010, the poultry production chain exported a total of 4 million tons, including broiler, turkey, duck, other birds, eggs and genetic materials, generating US$ 7.392 billion. The production of broiler meat amounted to 12.230 million tons, up 11.30%. According to the chief executive officer of Ubabef, Francisco Turra, the performance could have been better, had prices not soared that much and had the exchange rate been more favorable. Nevertheless, the rising purchasing power of the Brazilian people accounted for the consumption of a great part of the protein, which, besides being healthy, sells for more affordable prices. According to Apinco sources, the available volume reached 8.492 million tons, up 14.97% from 2009. Even so, poultry operations are responsible for Brazils position as largest global exporter of broiler meat and third largest producer, with a volume now very close to China, country that ranks second in global production. Sanitary standards are considered to be the highest in the world. According to Ubabef, Brazil is one of the few countries where no Chicken Flu (H5N1), a highly pathogenic disease, outbreaks took place. Furthermore, Brazil boasts the highest productivity rates on the planet, achieved through research and development in several areas. The GDP of the sector exceeds R$ 36 billion, representing 1.5% of the national GDP. According to the Ubabef director, the poultry production chain employs 4.5 million people. The factories alone offer 500 thousand direct jobs. One company alone, associated to Ubabef, employs upwards of 120 thousand workers in its production line. A total of 130 thousand families are involved with the activity, including small-scale farmers, which, thanks to the Brazilian model, based on the integration of poultry farmers and agroindustries, found it profitable to continue on their holdings.

PLENTIFUL dishes
National poultry operations produced 12.230 million tons of broiler meat in 2010, result up 11.38% from the previous year
Brazils soaring consumption of broiler meat has decisively contributed towards the performance of the national poultry operations. In 2010, the Brazilian Poultry Union (Ubabef) was expecting the production of broilers to go up by 3%. However, the volume of chickens reached 12.230 million tons, up 11.38% from 2009, when a total of 10.80 million tons were achieved. The scenario in December 2010, depicted the National Supply Company (Conab), features data referring to a chicken production volume of 12.312 million tons. The small difference, for example, is not an obstacle in the way that prevents Brazil from getting nearer to China, now the second-largest global producer. Chinese poultry breeders produced 12.550 million tons in 2010. The United States ranked first with 16.648 million tons in the same period. The strides made by Brazilian poultry operations in 2010 were particularly driven by soaring domestic consumption and by the 5.1% increase in exports, says Ubabef president Francisco Turra. Furthermore, according to an analysis by the Conab, the result brought back the historical levels of growth of the past, except in 2008 and 2009, years that reaped the ripple effects of the 2008 global financial crisis. The analysis also points to the rising internal demand in 2010, in light of the higher purchasing power of the Brazilian consumers. Ubabef has still no data related to the 2011 crop year, but estimates a rise ranging from 3% to 8%. Contrary to broiler meat, the performance of turkey sales remained in the red in 2010. RAZIL GETS The volume of 463 NEARER TO CHINA, thousand tons in SECOND LARGEST 2009 dropped to PRODUCER 337 thousand tons over the next period, according to Ubabef. The production of chicken eggs totaled 28. 851 billion pieces, equivalent to 1.731 million tons. The amount corresponds to per capita consumption of 148 eggs in 2010, or 8.93 kilos per person a year.

NO hustle and bustle

Perspective for higher production costs in 2011 should imply in lower profits from poultry farming and require double attention
Domestic broiler meat sales soared in the first half of 2011. In all, 4.448 million tons were negotiated, up 6.63% from the same period in 2010, according to data surveyed and disclosed by the Brazilian Association of Chicken Producers (Apinco). The total volume estimated for the year is 8.917 million tons, which represents a supply of 45.7 kilos of broiler meat per capita. The Brazilian Poultry Union (Ubabef), according to president Francisco Turra, had been expecting

moderate growth in the domestic scenario in 2011. Wholesale prices of frozen chicken went down 18.7% in the first quarter in 2011, compared to the same period in 2010, according to a survey by the National Supply Company (Conab). The receding prices of broiler meat were influenced by the great availability of the product in the domestic market and by the supply of better quality beef, when confined cattle were launched into the market, says Wander Fernandes de Sousa, analyst with Conab. In his view, prices had been on an uptrend but receded by virtue of an expected increase in the supply of fat cattle. Researcher Jonas Irineu dos Santos Filho, of Em-

brapa Hogs and Poultry, based in Concrdia (SC), on the grounds of analyses of the corn and soybean meal markets, estimates that these prices would remain above the 2010 levels. In this scenario, it is easy to anticipate that the production cost in 2011 will far exceed the average price registered in 2010, he notes. What should also be considered is the chance for impressive increases in the production of broilers, in light of the confinement of a bigger number of breeding flocks in 2010, making the production of day-old chickens soar considerably. Santos Filho observes that this growth should be viewed with caution by the poultry sector. Although the Picture is signaling scarce supply of bovine beef and staOMESTIC MARKET ble offers of pork meat, ABSORBED 69% OF the higher prices of ALL BROILER MEAT corn and soybean meal IN 2010 in 2010, signal pressure over production costs in 2011, jeopardizing the financial balance of the sector The Picture points to soaring domestic supplies, moderate increase in demand, falling prices and higher costs, resulting into profitability problems for the sector, he warns.

EVERYTHING AT HOME In 2010, domestic consumption played a fundamental role in the performance of the poultry business in Brazil. Of the total production of 12.230 million tons, 8.492 million tons were destined for the national market, representing 69% of the total. In 2009, domestic supplies reached 7.386 million tons. Jonas Irineu dos Santos Filho, of Embrapa Hogs and Poultry, based in Concrdia (SC), observes that the availability of chickens did not impact on the profitability of the sector, due to the low prices of corn and soybean meal. The Exchange rate, on the other hand, jeopardized exports, but had an influence on the lower production costs. Furthermore, the scenario characterized by speedy economic growth also improved the purchasing power of the people. This gave the domestic market the timely capacity to absorb production surpluses, he comments.

Brazilian poultry meat exports set a record in terms of volume in 2010, again confirming the Countrys position as leading global exporter
Poultry meat shipments, major item in Brazilian chicken exports, set a new record in 2010. According to the Brazilian Poultry Union (Ubabef), 3.819 million tons were exported last year, up 5.1% from the volume in 2009. The sales brought in revenue of US$ 6.808 billion in 2010, up 17% from the previous year. Average price reached US$ 1,782 a ton, 11.4% higher in terms of value. Differing a little from Ubabef, the Brazilian Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex), linked with the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC), concluded that poultry meat exports reached 3.826 million tons in 2010, bringing in revenue of US$ 6.814 billion. The result keeps Brazil as biggest broiler meat exporter, a position achieved in 2004. Still according to Ubabef, XPORTS OF THE exports of broiler, turkey, duck, POULTRY SECTOR goose and other birds totaled AMOUNTED TO 4 3.981 million tons and resulted MILLION TONS into US$ 7.244 billion. Within this mix of products, shipments of meat cuts amounted to 1.972 million tons last year, representing an increase of 5.7%. The revenue from the segment reached US$ 3.534 billion, up 22.3% from the previous year. Whole chicken shipments rose 6.4% and totaled 1.488 million tons. Revenue went up by 17%, totaling US$ 2.254 billion. Industrialized broiler sales experienced a decline in 2010. Shipments reached 168.8 thousand tons, down 1.9%, with revenue of US$ 465.1 million, down 5% from 2009. In the other industrialized segments, shipments reached 190.1 thousand tons, with revenue of US$ 553.4 million. These figures reflect the social and economic importance of Brazils chicken farming business, says Francisco Turra, chief-executive officer at Ubabef. In his opinion, 2010 did not achieve better results by virtue of the high value of the inputs and the unfavorable exchange rate policy.

In December 2010, an analysis by Conab concluded that Japan, Russia and Egypt imported more broiler meat from Brazil. Soaring demand was favored by the recovery of these countries from the 2008 financial crisis, observes Wander Fernandes de Souza, analyst with Conab. While Hong Kong reduced its purchases, China showed increased interest in importing meat from Brazil. This resulted into a proportional compensation in the reduction of the volume imported by Hong Kong, since China decided for bigger imports. Probably, part of the meat previously imported by Hong Kong had China as its final destination, Souza observes.

STEP by step
Paran, leading producer of broiler meat in Brazil, is achieving the position as largest exporter after record negotiations in 2010
Besides being the leading producer of broiler meat in Brazil, Paran is also close to reaching the position of leading protein exporter. In 2010, the State hit a new record, shipping upwards of one million tons, up 5% from the 954 thousand tons in 2009. The Poultry Products Industry of the State of Paran (Sindiavipar) maintains that this number corresponds to 26% of all Brazilian exports of this item last year, which totaled 3.82 million tons. Currently, Santa Catarina is the largest broiler meat exporter, with 1.020 million tons shipped abroad. The volume shipped by Paran resulted into US$ 1.69 billion, up almost 15% from 2009, when revenue reached US$ 1.47 billion. The financial returns took advantage of higher international chicken prices and of bigger exports of value-added products, explains Domingos Martins, president of Sindiavipar. He points out that the strong presence of the poultry industries abroad attests to the States capacity to adapt to different cultural requirements, including sanitary concerns and quality standards required by the importers. The product is shipped to upwards of 120 different countries around the globe. Nonetheless, according to Martins, the industries are now seeking new international markets for the purpose of recovering international prices, which are now facing an exchange rate gap. This endeavor relies on support from the Ubabef. We had a closer alignment with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa) and its superintendency in Paran, in addition to qualifying new companies to serve the international market, the official adds. After a year of results exceeding expectations, Martins believes that poultry farming in Paran is about to solidify its position in the global scenario, with shipment soaring from 5% to 10% in 2011. Foreign demand will continue on the rise in the next year, as the stocks in the importing countries are reduced, he argues. The optimistic projections by Sindiavipar HIPMENT OF 1 president confirmed in the first half of 2011, which BILLION TONS celebrated the biggest volumes shipped abroad and ACCOUNTS FOR the highest revenue over the past five years. Nego26% OF THE TOTAL tiations reached 499.7 thousand tons, representing 25.89% of all national poultry exports, generat-

ing revenue of US$ 968.44 million. These figures are up 4,5% and 19,4%, respectively, from 2010. Last year, shipments amounted to 477.29 thousand tons, with revenue of U$ 780.57 million. In spite of the unfavorable exchange rate, we are managing to add value to our products. This fact derives from the availability and variety presented by the industries in Paran, explains Martins. Besides the quantity, he stresses the quality of the meat chickens, resulting from investments in genetics, management, ambience and health Standards. A major strategy adopted by these industries to find their way into the international scenario consists in investing in specific cuts, in compliance with cultural patterns and religious beliefs of the different countries, he reveals.

DOUBLE DOSE A new record also was hit with regard to the amount of birds slaughtered in Paran in 2010. According to the Sindiavipar, it was 1.328 billion birds, up 5.6% from 2009, when slaughterings reached 1.257 billion broilers. Better results are expected for 2011. The domestic market soared considerably and the trend is for it to get more and more demanding. Our expectation is for constant increases until 2020, says Domingos Martins, president of the State Union. The production levels remained steady over the first six months in 2011. Paran slaughtered 692.471 million broilers, up 5.71% from 2010, when the result of the period came to 652.940 million. This is the best half-year result of the past five years of the poultry operations in the State, which have been making strides year after year and is up 31.11% from 2007. Besides being a big producer, Paran is also a great consumer of the product. We are a State with tradition in consuming broiler meat, this increases the demand for the product on the domestic side. The Brazilian market also registers high consumption rates, a fact that attests to the strength of broiler meat in the national economy, Martins analyzes. Last year, national per capita consumption remained at 44 kilos/person/year, according to data released by Ubabef. Our challenge consists in keeping this outstanding position both in production and sales, encouraging the producers to continue insisting on quality control of the broilers produced in the State, Martins concludes.

CANT stop
Leader in broiler meat exports in Brazil, poultry operations in Santa Catarina must continue improving to keep quality standards
The State of Santa Catarina is the largest broiler meat exporter in the Country, with shipments of 1.020 million tons in 2010 and 520.1 thousand tons in the first half of 2011, according to figures from the Brazilian Poultry Union (Ubabef). The State is also the biggest producer of broiler meat, with annual slaughterings exceeding 700 million birds. Santa Catarina was the first to join the industrial poultry farming system. Nonetheless, according to the Poultry Association of Santa Catarina (Acav), thousands of the farmers are in no condition to renew their productive structure. According to Acav sources, 15% of the 10,000 poultry breeders are in need of financial resources of about R$ 100 thousand to R$ 120 thousand per rural holding, basically for investments in equipment renewal and facility refurbishment. In July 2011, Acav and Ubabef contacted the governor of Santa Catarina, Raimundo Colombo, and suggested the creation of a poultry farming modernization and support program. They understand that the government should lend support in various manners. One of them could be an exemption from state value-added taxes (ICMS) on poultry farming equipment manufactured in Santa Catarina. Taxation has already been reduced from 12% to 5.6% and, at this moment, the State could remove the tax rate altogether. In the opinion of the president of the Acav, Clever Pirola vila, all major demands of the poultry sector involve plans for the long run, at least until 2050, focused on infrastructure (railways, roadways, ports and airports), animal health, credit lines for producers, fiscal alignment and commercial attachs in other countries, among other issues. As to the investment needed for modernizing the poultry sector in Santa Catarina, vila suggests publicprivate partnerships. The Country ranks second in the world in shipped volumes, whose main destination is the United States. Foreign sales by state were led by Paran, with the shipment of 43,206 t. The second position is occupied by Santa Catarina (33,619 tons), followed by Minas Gerais (33,470 t), Gois (24,034 t), Rio Grande do Sul (23,489 t) and others (137 kg). The main destinations were the European Union (87,240 t), Africa (46,589 t) and Europe Extra-UE (12,704 t). The states of Paran, Santa Catarina and Minas Gerais had a share of 31.69%, 19.61% and 19.11%, respectively, in the total number of turkeys slaughtered in 2010. Gois contributed with 15.78% of the total volume and Rio Grande do Sul, with 13.81%. According to Ubabef sources, the national performance of the sector ranks Brazil as third largest global producer of turkey meat, with 337 thousand tons produced in 2010. The United States ranks first, with 2.484 million tons, XPORTED followed by the European VOLUME Union, whose volume is DOWN, BUT 1.815 million tons.

Lost GROUND
Data indicate that ostrich farming reached its peak in Brazil in 2007, with a flock of 450 thousand birds
Nowadays, the ostrich, the largest bird, up to 2.4 meters high, weighing up to 150 kilos, has lost ground in the national business panorama. Slaughterings of this giant bird reached 1,395 pieces in 2010, compared to 13,449 in 2007, for example. In previous years, bigger numbers were registered: 6,954 (2009), 7,517 (2008) and 402 (2006). The March 2010 data were released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa). They do not include slaughterings carried out in state or municipal meat packing houses. Last year, the Brazilian flock was estimated at 80,000 birds, split into 600 ostrich operations, according to the Ostrich Breeding Association of So Paulo (Aepe). The amount was calculated in accordance with market estimates. The entity also ascertained that the number of birds reached 100,000, in 2009, with 800 producers. The largest flock was detected in 2007, with 450,220 birds, conducted by 2,032 ostrich breeders. Back then, the Brazilian Association of Ostrich Breeders (Acab) was still in operation. In So Paulo, the Ratitas Sectorial Chamber is active, presided over by producer Valmir Brustolin, owner of Betel Avestruzes. One of the episodes that marked negatively the activity was the extinction of Avestruz Master in 2006. In the sequence, what occurred were the stagnation of the breeding flock market; the elimination of the breeding flocks and Young birds; the excessively high number of slaughterings in municipal, state and federal slaughterhouses; and the lack of demand. Nevertheless, the producers that are still in the business, believe in the chance to resume the ostrich operations in Brazil. The motivation is anchored on the perspective for soaring domestic demand for ostrich-based products and the implementation of the National ISING DEMAND Plan for the control ENCOURAGES THE of Residues and ConSECTOR TO BET AGAIN taminants (PNCR). ON THE SECTOR They also point to the measures that should be implemented to leverage this type of operation. Among them, the production of quality cuts; standardization the name of the cuts throughout the regions; government support for the segment to transform the PNCR into an active organ, paving the way for exports; and, soon after the conquest of the PNCR, implement a traceability project, as it will be a requirement of the foreign market. Furthermore, investments in genetic enhancement are needed, and so are standard management systems and production cost reductions. In their opinion, Brazil boasts every technical condition to become the largest ostrich producer in the world.

Geese, ducks and teals diversify Brazilian poultry operations and also have significant shares in the foreign trade of this chain
Broiler meat is the flagship product in Brazils poultry sales, both at home and abroad. But it is not only this bird that moves the regional socio-economy. Several other species have attracted investments and, to some extent, created jobs and income in the countryside and industries. The State of Santa Catarina, for example, stands out for its shipments abroad of ducks, geese, teals and other birds. In 2010, the people of that state were responsible for 70.82% of the total slaughterings in Brazil, while Minas Gerais registered a share of 14.75%, according to the Brazilian Poultry Union (Ubabef). GIANT in the area

Paran was chosen as the location for a poultry industry budgeted at R$ 100 million, with the capacity to slaughter 420 thousand chickens a day
Before 2011 comes to a close, Paran will be home to the first unit of the BR Frango poultry industry. The new enterprise has been scheduled to start operating in the fourth quarter in 2011, in the county of San-

to Incio, in the northern region of the State, near the borders with So Paulo. Things that make the difference in the project are such variables as versatility and the introduction of techniques which qualify the plant to sell to any foreign market. An investment of R$ 100 million is estimated for the installation of the industrial complex. Besides relying on its own capital, resources came from credit

lines from the National Bank for Social and Economic Development (BNDES) and financial grants from Banco do Brasil and Ita. The unit was projected to operate at its full slaughtering capacity within two years from now. Initially, BR Frango will operate with one production shift and with a capacity to slaughter 105,000 birds a day. By 2012, at the second phase of the project, it will be about 210,000 birds a day, in two shifts. At the final stage 2013, by operating at full capacity with its second production line, a total of 420,000 birds a day are to be slaughtered, raising the industry to a leading position in the production of broilers in the State and also in the

Country. Paran is now the leading producer of birds in Brazil, accounting for upwards of 25% of the entire national supply. Located on a 365-thousandsquare-meter lot, the BR Frango complex will have 25.2 thousand square meters under roof, of which, 13.4 thousand square meters will be devoted to slaughtering operations and 890 square meters to the feed factory, with an initial capacity to produce 30 tons of feed an hour. Focused on the foreign market, the enterprise stands out for its versatile plant, whose viability resulted from studies aimed at meeting the requirements of any foreign inspection teams. The industrial complex complies with all technical, sanitary and environmental specifications, as well as with versatility principles in terms

of production mix. The meat packing industry will be able to sell 100% of whole chickens or in the form of meat cuts. The installations and equipment are in line with this flexibility, as almost the entire process is automated, from bird reception to evisceration, explains Reinaldo Morais, president of the industry. The climatized chicken breeding facilities are operated in the Dark House system, with ambient and lighting under control, providing for better bird performance and welfare. All BR Frango aviaries are equipped with electricity generators, which provide seNVESTIMENT IS curity, even TO GENERATE in the event of an energy 12,500 INDIRECT collapse, he JOB POSITIONS completes.

VACANCIES Some 800 direct jobs are estimated to be generated initially by BR Frango and, at the final stage of its implementation, approximately 2,500. The projection is for every direct job to create five indirect ones, totaling 12,500 job positions. To supply this amount of labor, technical visits to 25 municipal administrations throughout the region have been scheduled. In addition to taking advantage of the available workers of the moment, we will be in a position to absorb the employees that have been losing their jobs because of the introduction of automated systems in sugarcane plantations, says Reinaldo Morais, president of BR Frango. Besides the generation of jobs, rural producers will be given a chance to diversify their income sources. Approximately 240 bird breeding facilities will be operated in the integrated system, while 100 will be run by the company itself, to meet its needs. Within this context, the company will provide for all the inputs needed by the producers (feed, young chickens, medical supplies and technical assistance) and remains under obligation to purchase the entire production lot so as to complete the cycle. The rural producer has to provide for its own breeding facilities and other such needs as water, electric energy, woodfuel for heating up the facilities, sawdust (aviary bedding) and labor for bird raising operations. The industry also offers the chance for investments in poultry condominiums, a proposal that consists in the construction of a nucleus of poultry breeding facilities on one rural lot. It is an excellent option for self-employed professionals, or for those who do not own a rural holding to invest in poultry farming, Morais comments. BR Frango is to boast the largest bird raising facility in Brazil, now under construction and scheduled to start operating in September 2011, in the neighboring county of Colorado. With more than 6 thousand square meters under roof and the capacity to house 100 thousand birds, this giant structure is 160 meters long and 38 meters wide, and is equipped with a control room. The standard model used by most of the bird integration systems is not bigger than 125 m x 14 m. Our goal is to dilute costs and improve productivity, maximizing labor, logistics and technical assistance. With state-of-the-art technology, the giant aviary will excel in bird welfare, providing for every environment condition for the birds, Morais concludes.

Unifrango group projects a facility in the State of Paran with the capacity to store 10% of all Brazilian broiler meat exports
Par excellence facility, automated and marked by state-ofthe-art technology, the Warehousing and Distribution Center marks the new strategic phase devised by the Unifrango Agroindustrial group, which is completing 10 years in 2011. The project was idealized to be the most modern center in the Country and is going to contribute decisively towards the logistics of the associate members. We are going to offer more than just good service, but strategic business management practices. This will lead us to contribute even more directly towards production operations, says Pedro Henrique de Oliveira, chief executive officer at Unifrango. The new structure will be destined for storing the volumes produced by the industries until their delivery to the market. Therefore, the companies can maintain their production levels and operate in a more strategic manner. The center will allow for the companies to maintain their systematic production volumes, without the need to trade their products in a rush, explains Oliveira. Now under implementation, the Warehousing and Distribution Center will be based in Apucarana, in the North of the State. The geographic location of the new structure was devised in terms of logistics, since the town is easily accessed by road and rail, favoring production transportation needs. The town is not far from the Port of Paranagu, nor from the domestic consumer markets, stresses the official. The center will be implemented on a three-phase basis. The first one will require an investment of R$ 25 million. The facility will be entirely automated, based on German technology and a non-toxic cooling system. The physical structure of the first phase is expected to start operating in January 2012, generating 100 direct jobs, including operators and office clerks. The construction of the second phase has been scheduled to start in 2012. Each phase will count on 8.4 thousand IRST STAGE positions. Once the three phases have been conIS TO START cluded and the container shipment dock ready to OPERATING IN operate, 10% of Brazilian exports are estimated to JANUARY 2012 leave from the center, Pedro Henrique confirms.

FLEGO novo

Picking up STEAM
Hog farming celebrated good results in 2010, mainly because of soaring consumption in the domestic market
Although still under the ripple effects of the global economic downturn in 2008 and 2009, Brazilian pig farming business achieved satisfactory results in 2010. The recovery of the sector is attributed to the soaring consumption in the domestic scenario. Pork has definitively conquered the palate of the Brazilians and per capita consumption is about 14.5 kilos a year. Up to some years ago, this consumption rate had for a long time remained stable at 13 kilos. 68 According to the president of the Brazilian Association of Pig Breeders (ABCS), Marcelo Lopes, pork is the only animal protein capable of supplying the emerging countries, like Brazil. Bovines have already exhausted their possibility to increase in numbers, while chicken farming has reached its limit, he justifies. In his opinion, the supply of cuts, the same as bovine cuts, is essential if sales are to be expanded. Pork meat stands a big advantage. All of it is first class, contrary to beef, which is split into first, second and third class, he observes. The official considers it important to expand exports, but believes that the real market to be conquered is the domestic. He recalls that in Europe consumption per capita is 40 kilos a year, much higher than 14.5 kilos in Brazil. We have 190 million people, any increase by one kilo means 100 thousand additional breeding sows, he compares.

CORN ABCS president Marcelo Lopes, classifies the year 2010 as very good. According to him, the contribution towards this result came from the satisfactory remuneration to the producers, by virtue of the declining prices of corn, major component in animal feed. Corn prices began to react as of November 2010, impacting negatively on the sector in the first half of 2011. The report by the Brazilian Association of Pork Meat Producers and Exporters (Abipecs) shows that, in 2010, production went up by 2.28%, reaching 3.262 million tons, compared to 3.190 million in the previous year. This performance was sustained by the 3.5-percent gain in average slaughter weight. The number of animals remained stable, with 39.655 million head, representing a slight increase of 0.7%. Of this total, 83% were absorbed by the domestic market. The number of breeding sows has not changed from 2009, remaining at 2.457 million head.

CLUB of three
Southern states account for 60% of all breeding pigs in Brazil, but the Center-West stands out for the expansion in the sector
Although making strides in the Center-West, Brazilian pig operations are still heavily concentrated in the South. The three southern states are responsible for 60% of the entire pig breeding herd. In Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paran this herd totaled 948.05 thousand head in 2010, of a total of 1.588 million animals in industrial pig operations. Subsistence breeding pigs totaled 869.02 thousand animals in the Country. In all, taking into consideration the activity as a whole, 2.457 million head were housed in 2010, according to data released by the Brazilian Pork Industry and Exporter Association (Abipecs). With the installation of pork processing industries in the Center-West, by virtue of the proximity with the cereal suppliers, hog farming expanded considerably throughout the region. Mato Grosso was the State that housed the biggest number of breeding pigs, jumping from 46,492 pieces in 2004, to 82,204 in 2010, an increase of 76.81%. Over the same period, the southern states did not advance that much. Rio Grande do Sul increased its operations by 28.13%; Santa Catarina, 6.44%; and Paran, 7.79%. Gois is another State in the Center-West that has made great strides. From 2004 to 2010 the total number of breeding pigs soared 44.98%, from 53,907 to 78,155 head. The same holds for Mato Grosso do Sul, where there was an increase of 32.53% over the period, and the number of breeding pigs soared from 42,641 head to 56,514. Domestic Market director at Abipecs, N SIX YEARS, MATO Jurandi Machado, maintains that the proGROSSO INCREASED BY duction of pig meat in the Center-West, 76% THE NUMBER OF although having soared considerably, is still THE BREEDING PIGS incipient. In his view, the harrowing problem has been the lack of infrastructure in the region, where a major bottleneck are the poor roadway system, resulting into transportation problems. There is no way of getting the product out of there, he analyzes. The president of the Brazilian Association of Pig Breeders (ABCS), Marcelo Lopes, agrees with Machado. He recalls that, if for one thing, the production cost takes advantage of the cereal in the region, on the other hand, it is very difficult to haul the product to big consumer centers.

Back on TRACK
Foreign pork sales made a recovery in terms of value, with average price up 22.88%, but performance receded in volume
The year 2010 marked a recovery of Brazilian foreign pork sales. Although still lagging behind the levels that preceded the global economic downturn in 2008, average prices progressed considerably and were up 22.88% from the values practiced in 2009. According to statistical figures released by the Brazilian Pork Industry and Exporter Association (Abipecs), in 2010 the product was traded at an average price of US$ 2,481 per ton. In 2009, the price amounted to US$ 2,019. The sectors revenue from exports reached US$ 1.340 million, meaning an increase by 9.32% over the previous year, which came to a close with US$ 1,226 million. The results could have been even better, hadnt the shipments suffered a reduction of 11.04%, with a total of 540,417 tons. Researcher Marcelo Miele, of Embrapa Hogs and Poultry, in Concrdia (SC), recalls that this performance collides with international sales figures of the sector, which celebrate 7.3 percent higher shipments. Average exchange rate contributed towards weakening Brazils competitiveness in pork sales, he observes. Brazilian currency the real increased by 11.3%, receding from an average US$ 1.99 in 2009, to US$ 1.77 in 2010. During the same period, Russia, a major client, had its currency devaluated strongly, which improved the competitiveness of the United States and Europe in that market.

Temporary STRESS
Russia suspends purchases from 85 meat packing companies in Brazil, and pork exports recede in the first half of 2011
Inor /Ag. Assmann

Brazilian pork exports were doing well over 2011, but in early July a startling piece of news left the sector worried. Russian Phytosanitary and Veterinary Control Service announced an embargo on 85 meat packing industries in Mato Grosso, Paran and Rio Grande do Sul, which had been inspected in April, on allegations that they did not present the required

conservation Standards. The suspension of the shipments entered into force on 15th June and at mid-August had not yet been reversed. As Russia is the leading buyer of Brazilian pork meat, the move caused a huge impact on international transactions. From January to July 2011, according to data from the Brazilian Pork Industry and Exporter Association (Abipecs), sales had amounted to 302,957 tons, translating into revenue of US$ 829,121, down 3.35% in volume from the same period in 2010. Revenue, nonetheless, was up 7.74% in the seven months. In July, sales to Russia reached only 3,983 tons, while in the same months in 2010 they totaled 19,420 tons, repre-

senting a decrease of 79.49%. Due to the problem brought about by the embargo to the Brazilian pork, other destinations reached bigger shares. Hong Kong, second biggest importer of the national product, is an example, since the sales to that N JULY, nation went up by 80.88% SHIPMENTS TO in volume and 122.34% RUSSIA WENT in revenue, compared to DOWN 79.5% June. Ukraine, third biggest importer, also purchased more pork, and shipments to that country soared 70.80% in tons and 66.64% in value.

TREND Besides the Russian embargo on the meat packing companies, Brazilian pig farming business was also hit by higher corn prices in the first half of 2011. Corn is a basic ingredient in pig feed. The president of the Brazilian Swine Breeders Association (ABCS), Marcelo Lopes, stresses that in the southern states, which stand out in that activity, some farmers incurred losses of R$ 80 to R$ 100 per animal. He recalls that pork meat consumption receded over the period, because bovine and poultry cuts became cheaper. Lopes believes that the situation should improve over the year, seeing that in July prices had already reacted, in spite of the high prices of the inputs. There is expectation for Russia to suspend the embargo. Hope also comes from perspective end-of-year sales, which normally soar. Pork meat is very festive, he emphasizes.

Consumption of pork has been rising in Brazil as a result of initiatives by the sector, but there is still much room for further expansion

Pork meat is now the third most appreciated meat in Brazil. Bovine meat is the most consumed, followed by chicken, which took advantage of the affordable prices that resulted from the implementation of the Real Plan in 1994. Nonetheless, although not enjoying the same popularity as the other types of meat, per capita consumption of pork has soared across the Country. PERMANENT The project sets out that the integration contract should clearly define the general characteristics of the transaction and the obligations of each party involved in the process. A National Agroindustrial Integration Forum (Foniagro) is to be created, consisting of representatives of the integrated producers, integrating agroindustries and the government. This team will have the prerogative to define general policies and guidelines for the improvement and development of integration systems in the Country. Likewise, other initiatives include the creation of Committees for Follow-up Services, Integration Development and Controversy Solutions (Cadisc). Every agroindustry and the producers integrated with the unit will form a parity committee. The bill also sets out the need for publicity, by the integrating company, of the technical and financial standards of every productive cycle of the activity, through an Information Report on Integrated Production (Ripi). The Pre-Contractual Information Document (Dipc), very common in franchising operations, will also be used. It keeps the would-be integrated farmers aware of all data and risks that involve the system and information on the company they are to sign a contract with. This gives the growers enough inputs when it comes to taking a decision in a more transparent manner. Another initiative in the pipeline is the creation of an Emergency Integration fund, which will come to the rescue of growers who happen to be hit by climatic problems.

A GOOD response
Sanitary Standards of the herd are essential if the shipments of pork are to be expanded, and the perspective is for widening the share in the international marketplace
Brazil ranks fourth both in the production and exports of pork meat in the world. Over the past ten years, the share of the Country in the international trade of the product jumped from 4% to 11% and is projected to rise to 21% by 2019, according to projections by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (Mapa). This will rank the Country as second 92 largest exporter of pork. The hefty increase in shipments abroad, from 265 thousand tons in 2001 to 540 thousand in 2010, stems from the favorable conditions towards this activity in Brazil, along with the constant evolution of technology and advances in animal health. Federal agriculture inspector Carlos Henrique Pizarro Borges, of the Animal Health Department (AHD), a division of the Ministry of Agriculture, recalls that the credit of the excellent sanitary standards of the herds go to the requirements imposed by the countries that import pork from Brazil, which even ended up benefiting the domestic market. For some years now, Brazil has registered no out-

breaks of the major pig diseases listed by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). These diseases are officially controlled, in accordance with the standards set forth by the National Program for Swine Health (PNSS), and the characteristics of these diseases include their power to spread rapidly, resulting into serious economic and health problems, imparting a negative impact on international trade. According to Borges, of the OIE list, problems like swine vesicular disease, nipah virus encephalitis, transmissible gastroenteritis, respiratory and swine reproductive syndrome and trichinellosis are taken as exotic diseases and have never been detected in Brazil. The African swine pest was totally eradicated in 1984. Efforts to keep Brazil free from these diseases are under the responsibility of the sanitary vigilance department, whilst strict control over imports of live animals and their byproducts is maintained. Animal reproduction materials and biological products capable of transmitting pathogenic agents are also kept under strict control, he observes. Major responsibilities of the PNSS include the recognition, maintenance and expansion of free-from-disease zones, along with the certification and monitoring of breeding pig farms. Since 2001, the Country possesses a zone free from the classical swine fever. The region comprises the following states: Bahia, Esprito Santo, Gois, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Paran, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondnia, Santa Catarina, Sergipe, So Paulo, Tocantins and the Federal District. It includes 50% of the national territory, 84% of the pig herd, 93% of the meat packing industries under federal inspection services and 100% of all pork meat exports. By virtue of the sanitary defenses that were implemented, there is no record of PSC incidence in the free zone since 1998. The last outbreaks took place in 2009 in the States of Amap and Rio Grande do Norte, which do not belong to the delimited area and were, therefore, authorized to vaccinate their herds. Sales and use of the vaccine have been banned in Brazil since 1998 and are authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture only on special occasions, and vaccinations can only be conducted by the Official Veterinary Service department, says the federal agriculture inspector. Mapas target is to include the entire national territory as PSC free zone. Before 2011 comes to a close, a serum epidemiological trial is to be conducted in the state NSS IS SET of Acre to decide for its inclusion, besides the TO OFFICIALLY development of a serum epidemiological charCONTROL MAJOR DISEASES acterization project in the northeastern states that do not belong to the delimited area.

AUJESZKY The Aujeszky disease is another severe swine pest. It was first detected in Brazil in 1912 and its outbreaks are rare and only take place in certain regions. In Santa Catarina it has been under control since 2003. That same year, two outbreaks were detected in municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul that border with Santa Catarina. In the case of the Aujeszky disease, the move set forth by the PNSS consists in regionalizing the issue, with voluntary adhesion of the states to the free zone implementation program. Agriculture inspector Carlos Henrique Pizarro Borges insists that the proposal was for standardizing the agreements between the Mapa and state animal health defense organs, as a compulsory step for the states comprised by the PSC free zone, along with a diagnosis to check the situation of the Aujeszky disease. The PNSS has created an emergency plan for the two diseases. As a manner to prevent them from spreading, pig farm and breeding herd certification was made mandatory. For the farm to be granted the free from disease status, two exams are required for PSC, Aujeszky, brucellosis, tuberculosis, leptospirosis and scabies, with two to three month intermissions. From then onward, biannual monitoring is conducted.

Cade approves merger of Sadia and Perdigo, giving origin to the biggest food processing company in Brazil
After two years in the negotiating channels, finally, in July2011, the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade), an economic department linked with the Ministry of Justice approved the merger of Sadia and Perdigo. This merger gave origin to Brasil Foods (BRF), largest food processing company in the Country. Once the Performance Commitment Term (PCT) has been signed, the new company will have to comply with a series of requirements, intended to avoid the concentration of the market on certain items or in one company only. BRF will have to get rid of 12 brands and sell some complete production chains. There are negotiations in the pipeline involving 10 food processing companies, two pig slaughterhouses, two chicken slaughterhouses, four feed factories, 12 broiler parent stock farms, two bird incubators and eight distribution centers. The alienations are equivalent to 80% of Perdigos output, focused on the domestic market. This represents an industrial processing capacity of 730 thousand tons of food. The restrictions are equivalent to 11.6% of the volume and 13.1% of the net operational income of the company in 2010. So as to guarantee the raw material to the new owners of the companies to be sold, BRF is under obligation to cede the contract portfolio of the integrated producers in order to guarantee the supply of 100% of the chicken and 70% of the pigs. With regard to turkey meat, the company shall also supply the buying compaRF WILL HAVE TO ny with live birds, in a volume corresponding to SELL 12 BRANDS AND its share of its Rezende brand in the market, for SOME PRODUCTION the export price of this product. CHAINS The PCT also states that BRF will have to suspend, temporarily, the Perdigo brand, for a period that varies from three to five years, depending on the category of the product. Some items continue in the market, and are allowed for commercial continuity. One of the clauses sets forth the obligation of the purchasers of the assets to be alienated to keep the employees for a period of six months. All measures set out in accordance with the Cade are limited to the national territory, and the company is allowed to negotiate in the foreign market without any restrictions. In the opinion of the BRF board, the procedures to be implemented will have no impact on the performance of the company in 2011.

From liabilities to ASSETS

Ever-increasing pig production makes the impact of the activity on the environment even stronger, calling for actions to cushion the negative effects
Pig farming causes serious impacts on the environment. There are, nonetheless, manners to minimize, or even solve the problem altogether. The procedures to be adopted at waste treatment require appropriate management, which could be very labor intensive. Through concentration and intensive farming practices, pig wastes also soar in weight. According to researcher Airton Kunz, of Embrapa Hogs and Poultry, based in Concordia (SC), there is a need to change the approach towards managing the waste from this activity. The wastes turn into real liabilities and it is our responsibility to reduce their effects. Production and the environment cannot exclude each other, and the more they converge, the easier it becomes to reduce the environmental impacts, he concludes. Pig farmers, in general, are aware of the need to treat pig manure, which in the past was simply disposed of in landfills, polluting water streams and soil. Kunz recalls that every farmer should opt for the solution that best fits into their reality. Therefore, composting this organic matter and the use of biodigesters are the most used practices. The Embrapa researcher explains that composting has been used for a long time, generating biofertilizer that is used in agriculture. Nevertheless, he points out, lots OMPOSTING AND of farmers lack the patience BIODIGESTERS ARE to wait long enough for the THE MOST COMMON input to function properly. SOLUTIONS Composting is a process. Many pig raisers just mix different wastes, which has turned out to be a problem, because the bigger the carbon content, the less efficient the product, he justifies. Gradually, the pig farmers have discovered other manners to transform the liabilities into active assets. According to Kunz, new arrangements have been surfacing, like the extraction of biogas, which can be transformed into electricity in small electric power plants and channeled into the general electric energy supply network.

A suinocultura e a bovinocultura so atividades pecurias que deixam resduos altamente poluentes. Making MONEY from waste

Itaipu Binational project, in western Paran, transforms livestock waste into energy, providing for one more income source
Pig farming and cattle raising are rural activities that produce intensively polluting waste. Nevertheless, appropriate management of these wastes could not only solve this serious problem but also become a source of income for the rural producers. A project spearheaded by Itaipu Binacional, largest hydroelectric plant in the world, located in Foz do Iguau (PR), shows in a clear and simple manner how environmental preservation, productivity and income generation can walk side by side. The Agroenergy Condominium for Family Farming in the Ajuricaba River Microbasin, in Marechal Cndido Rondon, in Western Paran, involves 34 small-scale family farming operations. The choice for this location took into consideration the low waste production proportion, which makes it unviable for the growers to generate energy on an individual basis. In every rural unit a biodigester was installed, which decomposes the organic matter that results from the rearing of approximately three thousand pigs and upwards of one thousand head of cattle, generating biogas. By means of a 25.5 kilometer gas pipeline, the biogas is transported sanitarily, could generate 266 thousand cubic meters of biogas, resulting into 445 thousand kilowatts of electric energy.
