Denise Gomez 11/1/12 American Revolution DBQ The American Revolution was a historical event that led to the

independance of the american colonies. The americans broke away from the british government in hope of changing what they thought was a corrupt and unfair government.The revolution brought many fundamental changes to american society. During the time period of 1775-1800, the revolution influenced the creation of the constitution, led to changes in the mindset of woman, and the creation of two opposing economic systems. Before the revolution ,americans had no means of a strong federal government.The Articles of confederation failed to make any form of a unified government, meaning that the americans wanted change. James Madison was a strong supporter in creating a judicial, legislative,and executive branch that would create a system where the government can control the governed .He believed that a government should be administered by men over men (Doc I). He wanted to place the power of America in the hands of a small amount of leaders. However some still feared that there would be too much power given to the federal government. Later delegates from the state of Connecticut got together to create something called The Great Compromise. This led to the creation of the Senate and the House of Representatives whose members were chosen based on population. After the revolution there was a major shift in politics because of the different ideologies that the founding fathers had. Most importantly the revolution brought a sense of patriotism to americans that influenced the creation of the american constitution. In addition to politics the revolution also brought social changes, for example a change in the mindset of woman. During the revolution women played an essential role by providing food and clothing for the men during battle. Not only did they help with their said duties but they also took up arms when it was necessary , taking up the role of men (Doc A). This influenced them to want a higher position in the social ladder by obtaining more important roles in society and

allowing them to have the same rights as men including the ability to speak their minds and hold political positions. Many woman during this time wanted to become less restricted when it came to showing what they believed in. Woman started to want their voices to be heard so that they can break out of their domestic situations and and start to assert their own independence as woman( Doc J). Although women did not exactly get all the rights that they wanted and deserved, after the revolution they were looked at in a different light, they were seen as people that had the ability to show men and their children good morals and keep the structure of a household. Lastly ,after the revolution the economy changed because it created two opposing economic ideals . One ideology after the revolution was agrarian republicanism. Thomas Jefferson was a strong believer in an agrarian economic system. During 1786 the United States was mostly agricultural with small farmers(Doc F). Some opposed the system because they favored a manufacturing based economy. Jefferson believed that the best policy was a free trade system that would keep the prices low.However Hamilton believed in an economy based on mercantilism. These opposing views led to a two party system with the south favoring Jefferson and commercial cities in the Northeast favoring Hamilton. Hamilton created a financial plan that said he would create a national bank that could provide loans , he also wanted to propose high taxes on items imported from foreign countries. The united states ended leaning towards Hamilton's economic plans apart from Jeffersons. After the revolution there were many changes when it came to politics, society, and the economy. After breaking away from Great Britain the americans had to show that that could prosper without having to abide under the rules of one king. Once the U.S became independent it created its own constitution, gave women more credibility, and created an opposing economic system.
