Joy in a jiffy
A
Padma Akula

Padma Akulas journey of bringing a smile on peoples faces through flashmobs is an inspiring example of spreading happiness for the sake of it, as Arwa Janjali finds out
Kolaveri flashmob in Chennai

mid the hustle-bustle of Diwali festivities, the buzzing Queen St suddenly bursts into bubbles. The dreamy Pehla Nasha from Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikander fills up the air along with the tiny transparent circular rings. Just when you are syncing in this melodiously soothing atmosphere, you hear the dhinchak (fun filled) beats of Coolie No. 1s track Main Toh Raste Se Jaa Raha Tha. A livewire runs through the crowd gathered around a bunch of people, who are matching steps Govinda style and crooning Tujhe Mirchi Lagi Toh Main Kya Karoon. More and more people join in, the energy getting infectious and smiles a bountiful. This is the third time Auckland witnessed this flash of joy on its roads, thanks to Padma Akula. This Aucklander has been living up to her goal of spreading immense joy through her flashmob initiative JoyMob International started in December 2011. Its all about spilling joy, nothing more, nothing less, Padma says, revealing her sole purpose behind organising flashmobs. Her first attempt at bringing people together to do a jig on the Tanglish number Kolaveri Di was not just an instant hit in Auckland. The reports of the flashmob featured in Indian and American media too with many Indian online publications, including India Today covering it, along with CNN USA. The video had over a million views online going on to become the most popular among the numerous Kolaveri Di

flashmobs brought a smile on their faces, it all feels worth it. Its been life changing for a few people. And that serves the purpose to the fullest. Also, regardless of the challenges, the people are so amazing. The amount of goodwill that poured in was unbelievable. For instance, since it was a joy project, everyone from the DJ, the photographers to the cinematographers and editors came in with generous heart. So the key to the success of this initiative has been the

flashmobs performed world over. What more? TVNZ did a special coverage on the Kolaveri Di flashmob with Padma and her group recently as a part of their Diwali promotions. For Padma though, the germ of this fever originated when she saw the Mumbai CST flashmob in November last year, which went viral on Facebook. It stirred me up. I loved the joy and togetherness that a flashmob offered and I wanted to be a part of it. So I started looking up for them in Auckland but nothing was happening. Everyone was talking about it but no one was actually doing it. I was very disheartened and poured all my disappointment on Facebook. In reply to my cribber of a FB post, one of my friends suggested why dont I organise one if no one else was? Thats how it all began. I created a flashmob so that I could be in one, Padma recounts, with a wide grin. But bringing a random bunch of people together to dance on a Tamil song on a foreign land wasnt going to be a cakewalk. Only five people turned up on the first day of rehearsals. And the most challenging part was that I was doing this in December, when most of my friends had gone off on their

annual vacation, she narrates, adding, there was no way I could do a flashmob with five people. So I requested those five to get their friends and somehow we managed to get around 25 people. Once that was sorted, the next mammoth task was to get a nod from Auckland City Council to do it at the Westfield Mall outside Britomart. I badgered them with phone calls after they gave us some hidden spot at first and refused to allow so many people to perform at one go. I think they finally agreed because they wanted to get rid of me (laughs). After the success of her first flashmob in Auckland, Padma took her Joy Project to Chennai, India, followed by a flashmob in Sydney, which she organised online. Being the geek that I am, I wrote a manual on how to do a flashmob. So when this lady, Rashmi Bedarkar, from Sydney got in touch with me about organising a flashmob there, I passed on the manual to her and collaborated with her online, she tells us with as much happiness as she has been spreading among people with this project. At the end of the day, when people message me saying that the videos of our

wholehearted support of all those wonderful people, she stresses. From five to 130 participants, JoyMob International has surely come a long way, but how does this screenwriter/filmmaker by profession manage choreography so well? I am classically trained in Bharatnatyam and have choreographed for plays and various other shows. And my amazing dance coaches who coach along with me give me their 200 per cent support and commitment to make it happen. But essentially, this project is not for dancers. 50 per cent of the people involved in this have never danced before but they have the masti (mischievous fun), she smiles. So when is the next flashmob coming up? When I am inspired enough to have one, she says cheekily. It seems like a long wait for all those who wish to be a part of this joyous endeavour. You can perhaps join in the virtual happiness by checking out the delightful video of Diwali Auckland Flashmob on YouTube till then.

P
resident Barack Obama's re-election will mean opportunities for New Zealand, Prime Minister John Key says. Key last week congratulated Obama on his win and later wrote a formal letter of congratulations. The two men will meet again at the East Asia Summit in Cambodia later this month. "I have enjoyed working with President Obama during his first term as President and welcome the opportunity to continue our strategic partnership over the coming years," Key said. New Zealand's relationship with the United States was a close one, he said. "With President Obama's re-election, there will be many opportunities to enhance the relationship." US ambassador David Huebner said election day was a great show of American democracy but both candidates would have continued to support the New Zealand-US relationship. "Election day is always a great day for us... what I'd be doing if I was back home if the same thing I'm doing here: sitting somewhere in front of a television, any where there's a television there's a little corner of America," Huebner said.

The first Hindu in US Congress

ARvIND KUMAR

nited States now officially has its first Hindu in Congress. Tulsi Gabbard, a 31-year-old Iraq war veteran, has created history by being the first Hindu American in Congress and is expected to take her oath on the Bhagavad Gita. Ans she comes from this part of the world. Proud of her Hindu religion, Gabbard is not Indian. She was born in Leloaloa, in American Samoa, the fourth of five children of Mike Gabbard and carol Porter Gabbard. Her family moved to Hawaii in 1983 when Tulsi was two. Tulsi grew up in a multicultural, multi-religious household. Her father is of Samoan/Caucasian heritage and is a practicing Catholic who is a lector at his church, but also likes to practice mantra meditation, including kirtan. Her mother is Caucasian and a practising Hindu. Tulsi fully embraced Hinduism as a teenager. Her father is currently the State Senator for Hawaii's 19th District. Gabbard says her faith will be an asset in Congress, where she hopes to work on war veterans affairs, environmental issues, and cultivating a closer relationship between US and India. It is clear that there needs to be a closer working relationship between the United States and India. How can we have a close relationship if decision-makers in Washington know very little, if anything, about the religious beliefs, values, and practices of Indias 800 million Hindus? Gabbard told The Huffington Post. Hopefully the presence in Congress of an American who happens to be Hindu will increase Americas understanding of India as

My being elected to Congress would give hope to hundreds and thousands of young Hindus in America, that they can be open about their faith and even run for office, without fear of being discriminated against or attacked because of their religion - Tulsi Gabbard
well as Indias understanding of America. Gabbard defeated K. Crowley of the Republican Party with a solid margin in Hawaiis second Congressional district. And Crowley was mean-spirited enough to fume that Gabbards religion was incompatible with the Constitution. In a statement released after her victory, Gabbard acknowledged that her election would be an inspiration to Hindus across America who feel diffident about having a different religion. On my last trip to the mainland, I met a man who told me that his teenage daughter felt embarrassed about her faith, but after meeting me, shes no longer feeling that way, Gabbard said. He was so happy that my being elected to Congress would give hope to hundreds and thousands of young Hindus in America, that they can be open about their faith and even run for office, without fear of being discriminated against or attacked because of their religion. Two the two highest-profile Indian-American politicians are both Republicans and converts to Christianity: Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal was raised Hindu, while South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley was raised Sikh.

Origins of the NZ Indian sporting spirit

Massey Watson

Money Transfer
Cheap. Secure. Easy.

he courage of Indian pioneers in forming sporting clubs against the odds is captured in a new book by Massey sports historian Geoff Watson in collaboration with the New Zealand Indian Sports Association. Sporting Foundations of New Zealand Indians was published last month. Dr Watson says the book is a history of the New Zealand Indian Sports Association which celebrated its 50th jubilee this year and its eight member clubs. The book was commissioned and published by the New Zealand Indian Sports Association. The oldest of the clubs, Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland, were founded in the 1930s and inspired, in part, by Indian hockey teams, which toured New Zealand in 1926, 1935 and 1938. Dr Watson, a senior lecturer in history at Masseys School of Humanities, says he was struck by the remarkable courage the pioneers showed in founding these clubs in the 1930s, a time when there were only 1200 Indians in New Zealand. The founders of these clubs

travelled half-way around the world and were trying to make their way in a new country which is difficult enough, but many of the Indian immigrants had little, if any, English. Moreover, racist sentiment was openly expressed in New Zealand during this time, even government publications such as the 1921 Census warning 'the coalescence of the white and the so-called coloured races is not conducive to improvement in racial types', Dr Watson explains. Despite these sentiments, some early clubs received assistance from local sporting identities. Eddie McLeod, then captain of the New Zealand Hockey team, was the first coach of Wellington Indian Sports Club. Given this background, and with many of the young Indian men working long hours for low pay, it would have been very easy to have put sport in the 'too hard' basket, but they pressed ahead and formed clubs, despite the opposition of some of their elders, Dr Watson says. From the first clubs and inter-club games the national association was founded in 1962. It now oversees a cricket tournament, golf tournament, an Under-23 men's and women's hockey tournament and Queen's Birthday tournament, which attracts approximately 25 teams in three codes: hockey, netball and soccer. Many Indians who played in these tournaments have since gone on to achieve representative honours at provincial and national level. Dr Watson says all of this has been achieved on a voluntary basis, which is a remarkable achievement at a time when many sports operate on a professional basis.

amount of money for their charity and the cheque was presented to them on the same night. The event started with the chant of Om and Durga Stuti. Many people also played Dandiya Raas. After a short break Dhol was introduced to the floor and everyone enjoyed the Bhangra beats. Further

fun was added to the night with spot prizes and lucky draw. The night was concluded by devotional songs of Devi, and Arti was performed for Durga and Amma. This was the perfect ending and everyone present could feel the divine vibrations and energy.

In a multicultural society, its important to develop bonds of respect, friendship and understanding across people from diverse backgrounds. Without these, we cease to be communities, he says. The Indian High Commissioner to New Zealand, His Excellency Avanindra Kumar Pandey told the audience that New Zealand is a very welcoming place and the remark-

able warmth of its people helps to cement the friendship between the two countries. The President of the New Zealand Indian Central Association, Paul Singh Bains noted that Diwali is celebrated around the world and is a time when family takes centre stage and people have time to reflect on their achievements. The lighting of the traditional diya or lamp, he said, signifies love, joy, pride and hope. A traditional floor decoration, or Rangoli, made from coloured powder formed a vibrant feature at the entrance to the Banquet Hall. The Hindu Council of New Zealand was responsible for the Rangoli and it was created by artist, Sudha Thomas, with help from a youth Interfaith group from Dancer Radhika Ravi Wellington.

Diwali dhamaka at Auckland libraries

From 1 November, Aucklanders have been getting involved in a range of Diwali activities at their local library celebrating Indian culture, music, movies and more. There is still much more fun to be had! Kids will love the Diwali-themed Storytime (appropriate for 3 to 5-year-olds), the many craft and quiz activities, competitions and games from India. Hindi or Punjabi speakers can join in a Q&A about Auckland Libraries services. For the not so young, there is a chance to play Bollywood-style ukulele and to learn more about the herbal remedies in your pantry, while the fitness mad can try Bollywood-style dance activities or yoga. For a more hands-on experience, there will be henna paintings at Auckland Libraries. There will also be Bollywood movies screening at the Central City Library. Auckland is such a diverse city, it is important that we as Aucklanders acknowledge and celebrate this diversity, celebrating cultural festivals such as Diwali, says Glen Eden Library manager and Diwali co-organiser Imraan Ali. Auckland Libraries Multicultural Services advisor and Diwali coorganiser, Shivangi Pradhan, says the festival also gives Auckland Libraries the chance to highlight its Indic-language collection of novels, magazines, travel guides DVDs and cookbooks. In the Community Languages Collection there are books in Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi Tamil, Urdu and Marathi languages. There is also a catalogue of more than 125 Indian newspaper titles available, including The Hindu, International Herald Tribune, Times of India, New Indian Express, Business Standard, Deccan Chronicle, and Best Movie International. Find activities for the whole family at Auckland Libraries this week as Diwali celebrations continue until 15 November. Behind the scenes of Lincoln Road interchange

Aucklanders will have the chance for a rare first-hand look at progress on Aucklands Lincoln Road interchange at an NZ Transport Agency open day on Saturday, 24 November. The interchange on the Northwestern Motorway (State Highway 16) is a key part of the Western Ring Route the strategic alternative to SH1 identified by the Government as one of its Roads of National Significance. come along and learn more about the development of the project and its role in completing a Western Ring Route motorway alternative around Auckland. The open day coincides with the start of construction on the third stage of the upgrade the widening of the Henderson Creek Bridge east of the interchange. As work develops on the interchange, two neighbouring projects linked to the Western Ring Route are also underway.

For the Auckland south youth

Thousands of people pass through the construction site every day, and were now opening up the door so that they can come in and take a look at what happens behind the barriers, says the NZTAs acting State Highways Manager for Auckland and Northland, Steve Mutton. This open day is our way of saying thank you to the community for the support theyve given us over the past couple of years. We also want people to

Enabling works have started at the Waterview Connection project before construction of its twin tunnels starts next year, and the upgrade of the SH16 causeway to make it wider and higher will also start in the new year. Staff from both projects will be present on the day to update the community. The Western Ring Route will have a huge impact on travel around Auckland, Mr Mutton says. When it is completed,

this 48 kilometre-long motorway choice for drivers will provide much better connections between Manukau in the south, Auckland International Airport, Waitakere and the North Shore, and ease congestion on the Auckland Harbour Bridge and the CBD. Work at Lincoln Road began in 2010. A new Selwood Road Bridge has been completed, but will not be fully open to traffic until the east-bound motorway on and off ramps are re-built. Mr Mutton says better access to and from the motorway will reduce queues, make travel more reliable and improve safety for drivers. The motorway around the interchange is also being widened from two lanes to three in both directions. Dedicated bus shoulders along the motorway will improve public transport journeys to and from the city. There will also be better connections for walkers and cyclists between Lincoln Road and Selwood Road, as well as an extended Northwestern cycleway We have a lot to show and tell people and we hope they take advantage of this opportunity to have look behind the scenes, says Mr Mutton. The open day is on Saturday, 24 November, between 9am and 2pm. Site access and parking will be available on Selwood Road and will be well signposted. People can contact the project at 09 969 9800 or www.nzta.govt.nz/wrr

School leavers in Auckland south are the latest group set to benefit from an Auckland Council youth employment and upskilling initiative, Youth Connections. Launched last night at an event attended by Sir Stephen Tindall, Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse, local boards and businesses, Youth Connections aims to improve the employment prospects of local youth in the Otara-Papatoetoe and Mangere-Otahuhu local board areas by providing them with skills and business connections to begin their careers. Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse says she is excited to see the Youth Connections programme come to Auckland south and is confident it will not only make a big impact on the youth who live there, but also the local business community. Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board Chair John McCracken comments: Youth Connections is a great opportunity for businesses to invest in their future workforce to build strong, sustainable businesses. Its a win-win situation which will see our local youth upskilled and transitioned into work. Chair of the Mangere-Otahuhu Local Board, Peter Skelton, adds: Youth Connections sees our local communities flourish through supporting young people into the workforce with skills local employers have said they need. Youth Connections currently operates in the Puketapapa local board area where the first programme has successfully operated; all seven of the participants who completed the programme won jobs as a direct result of their participation in the programme. It also recently launched in the Hibiscus and Bays local board area. Youth Connections will operate in two Auckland south local board areas, Otara-Papatoetoe and Mangere-Otahuhu, with funding from the Tindall Foundation and Auckland Airport Community Trust respectively. Other boards funded and developing their Youth Connections programmes are Maungakiekie-Tamaki, Whau, Henderson and Massey.

Is Obamas win an advantage for India?

New Delhi: It would be business after the electoral rhetoric, India's government, politicians and industry said after US president Barrack Obama won a second term in office, hoping he will encourage more trade and investment and a strategic partnership between the two countries. But pressure could also rise on India to expedite big-ticket economic reforms like opening up the insurance, defence and agriculture sectors after liberalisation of the retail trade and ramp up military cooperation, observers said. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh congratulated Obama on his win and said: "We have not only advanced cooperation across the full spectrum of our bilateral relationship, but also deepened our engagement in the pursuit of global peace, stability and prosperity." "No doubt that there is much more we can do together to further strengthen the India-US partnership and thereby advance peace and stability, expand mutual economic opportunities, harness the potential of science and technology, innovation and higher education and empower our people to address global challenges." Finance Minister P. Chidambaram welcomed Obama's victory and hoped that Indo-US relations will get stronger, especially economic relations. The $100 billion IT industry is hoping for the best. Both Kris Gopalakrishnan of Infosys and N. Chandrasekharan of TCS hoped that the Obama administration would a "pragmatic" approach. One of India's grouse during Obama's first term as president has been the challenges the IT companies faced was the rising visa fees and getting visas for their workers. The Indian government has described these as "highly discriminatory". Phaneesh Murthy of iGate Corp, however, said the Obama re-election was not the "best news for India or the IT outsourcing industry." He said the election rhetoric could continue into 2013 and that would determine the "full implications". Unemployment was a major issue in the election and Obama had criticised US firms "exporting" jobs, seeking to tax them more and use that money to help those companies that keep jobs at home. Trade and investment analysts said there would be significant issues for India in the years ahead, such as its immigration concerns and US worries about investment barriers. Washington sees India is vital for its national interests, both as a big export market for US goods and a strong strategic ally, given China's growing assertion in the Asia-Pacific.

Industry lobbies FICCI and CII also applauded the Obama reelection. "A historic second term for Obama augurs well for the now established India-US strategic and economic partnership," said R.V. Kanoria, FICCI president. CII president Adi Godrej said Indian industry is hopeful that both countries will strengthen economic

ties by "lowering barriers to trade and investment". "The 2nd term of a US President is the more fascinating one. With politicking out of the way, it's time to build the real legacy," tweeted Anand Mahindra, managing director of Mahindra Group. Biocon chairperson Kiran Mazumdar Shaw said India's pharmaceutical and software industries

could benefit from Obama's healthcare reforms. "He wants the healthcare system to become efficient, and that is where the IT industry stands to gain. And he wants it to be affordable, and that is how India's generic drug makers stand to gain," she said speaking at the World Economic Forum event in Gurgaon.

indian royal carriage to be auctioned in UK

Horsepower takes on a very literal meaning at the forthcoming sale in Surrey, UK, by specialist classic vehicle auctioneers, Historics at Brooklands, on Saturday 24 November, when an extremely rare Indian artefact a magnificent horse-drawn State Carriage owned by the Maharaja of Mysore, Southern India - comes to auction. T h e coach, which dates back to 1825 and is believed to be of British origin, was used for engagements by the Maharaja to transport European royalty - including His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales. Given the elegant design and sumptuous detailing, the coach can appropriately be described as a work of art, as indeed can be seen in a wall painting of it at the Mysore Palace Museum in the state of Karnataka, some 90 miles from Bangalore. The imposing carriage features an ornately finished cruciform body with a vaulted, domed roof, situated atop double elliptic springs and iron-bound artillery patterned wheels. The exterior houses two seats that would have been used for servants and courtiers. The coach - one of a significant number of antiques offered by the Maharaja in 1974 - was suc-

Two Indian origin Americans are being touted as possible candidates to contest the next US Presidential election in 2016. Bobby Jindal, 41, Governor of Louisiana, and Nikki Haley, 40, Governor of South Carolina, are listed in the latest Time magazine as possible Republican Party candidates to contest the White House in four years time. A Rhodes Scholar and former McKinsey consultant, Jindal served a stint in George W Bushs administration and was a member of the House before winning the governorship in 2007. Jindal is a fiscal conservative who opposes abortion and gay marriage. Hes loved by the GOP base and, as an Indian American, brings a dose of diversity, Time reported. Haley, born Nimrata Nikki Randhawa, is daughter of Sikh immigrants from India. Haley, a converted Christian, endured racial slurs, allegations of marital infidelity, and hostility from some Republicans but won friends in high places, including Sarah Palin, on her way to becoming the first female Governor of South Carolina, and the youngest in the country. She was born in Bamberg, South Carolina, on January 20, 1972, to Dr Ajit Singh Randhawa and Raj Kaur Randhawa, immigrants from Amritsar, in Punjab, India.

The family business grew to become a multi-million dollar company. Among others listed by Time magazine are Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, Vice-President Joe Biden, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, Maryland Governor Martin OMalley, New york Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. Gandhi Statue Unveiled in Florida

Former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Davie Mayor Judy Paul unveiled a seven feet tall bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi on October 02, 2012 in the Town of Davie, Florida Thousands of residents from the area including Indian American families joined the festivities despite the heavy rains. It was quite a miracle that the rain stopped for enough time to allow the Unveiling Ceremonies to complete and started raining again when His Excellency Abdul Kalam commented what an auspicious occasion! The members of the Town Council, State Senators Nan Rich and Eleanor Sobel and several elected officials were present to witness the dedication ceremony which was a living tribute to world peace and the quest for social justice as the Mayor said. The Mayor Judy Paul declared the day as the World Peace & Mahatma Gandhi Day. The 800 pound statue was sculpted by Matt Glenn of Big Statues, Provo, Utah in cooperation with Sculptors Guild. As a token of respect to Gandhi, they also contributed toward the cost of the Statue. Babu Varghese, a member of the Board and an Engineer by profession, designed the Gandhi Square with half an acre of land that houses the Statue. The square patterns with alternating colored step stones leading to the Statue represent the steps Gandhi took in his lifetime struggle to achieve freedom to his people. These steps are bordered by lighted stone pillars which represent a pathway of light leading up to the Statue itself. Then there are concentric circles with the curved wall behind it as if showing the letter G (for Gandhi) from above in an abstract form. Soon, the stately Palm ment it is for the Indian Community! Responding to the warm reception accorded him Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam reflected on Gandhis life and the relevance of his teachings in todays world. New Delhi: Two months after parting with former colleague Arvind Kejriwal, veteran social activist Anna Hazare announced his new core team last week and said he would commence an anti-corruption campaign from Jan 30 next year. death anniversary of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. Hazare said revolution is needed to change the system. Need to unite the country against corruption. Need to launch a revolution to change the system, the Gandhian said. Speaking on the issue of Jan Lokpal, Hazare said: The government will have to enact Jan Lokpal before 2014. He said: Foreign companies should be stopped from entering the country....Gram sabhas should be given more powers and the right to decide on land acquisition. Privatisation of water and electricity should not be allowed. Besides Hazare, the new core committee comprised of members like Kiran Bedi, Medha Patkar, Justice Santosh Hegde, Arvind Gaur, Akhil Gogoi, Sunita Godara, Avinash Dharmadhikari, Vishwambhar Chaudhary, Shashi Kant, Lt Col Bijender Khokhar, Rakesh Rafiq, Ran Singh Arya, Shivendra Singh Chauhan and Akshay Kumar. Patkar, who was present at the press conference, said there were no differences with Kejriwal over the issue of India Against Corruption (IAC) brand. Former cop turned social activist Kiran Bedi said: The movement is going to continue and will not stop till our investigating agencies become independent of government control. Hazare earlier parted ways with Kejriwal after the later decided to form a political party. Clarifying the divide in the team, Anna said Kejriwal faction should no longer use his photos and name.

Suu Kyi visits India after four decades

New Delhi: Myanmars iconic pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is visiting India from Nov 13-18, her first trip to the country after a gap of nearly 40 years. Suu Kyi delivered the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Lecture here on Nov 14. Manmohan Singh had extended an invitation to Suu Kyi to visit India when he was in Myanmar in May. Suu Kyi, chairperson of the National League for Democracy, had accepted an invite from United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi in her capacity as Chairperson of Nehru Memorial Fund to deliver the Nehru Memorial Lecture. She is also scheduled to call on Vice President Hamid Ansari, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, a statement said. Myanmars opposition leader was conferred the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding in 1992. Suu Kyi will visit her alma mater, Lady Sri Ram College, where she will interact with the faculty and students and also visit The Energy and Resources Institute. She will also travel to Bangalore where she will visit the Indian Institute of Science and the Infosys Campus. She is also scheduled to tour rural areas in Andhra Pradesh to gain a firsthand impression of the rural development and womens empowerment programmes being undertaken in India. Suu Kyis India visit is part of Indias ongoing engagement with the democratic and multi-party polity in Myanmar. It would provide opportunity to exchange views on all matters of mutual interest with a view to building upon the positive momentum in India-Myanmar relations. India and Myanmar have strengthened their close and friendly relations with exchanges of high-level visits, including the state visits of the Myanmar President Thein Sein to India in October 2011 and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Myanmar in May 2012. Suu Kyi was under house arrest in Myanmar for almost 15 of the 21 years from July 20, 1989, until her release Nov 13, 2010. Her connection to India goes back to her youth when her mother, Khin Kyi, was appointed ambassador to India and Nepal in 1960. Suu Kyi studied in the Convent of Jesus and Mary School, and graduated from Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi with a degree in politics in 1964.

Hazare met members of the core committee of his new anti-corruption group here to decide on the strategy of his movement against corruption. Pertinently, Jan 30 is the

Before I came to the UCKG I was suffering with severe headaches every day. I was also a very angry person, if I felt offended by anyone I would get really angry and aggressive towards that person. I also suffered with nightmares nearly every day to the point that I could not sleep with the lights off and I was very scared of the dark. p These problems went on for a couple of years leading me to look for help in different places. I even ended up doing rituals of witchcraft but it didnt work. I also had immigration problems and it seemed to be so complicated. After I tried in different places I ended up coming to the UCKG Help Centre. My spiritual life was so bad. Today after attending the Spiritual Cleansing Sessions all the h headaches that I used to have are completely gone, I do not have anger problems any more, I am a calm and patient person, I do not have nightmares anymore, Im not afraid of the darkness and my Immigration problems are solved. Im very happy and free from the evil spirits.

World Hindu economic talks to be held in fiji

ARvIND KUMAR
Fiji will host the next World Hindu Economic Forum in February next year. The forum, which aims to help make the Pacific community prosperous, will be held at the Sheraton Fiji Resort, Denarau Island, in Nadi, on Saturday, February 16. The World Hindu Economic Forum (WHEF) promotes activities to make society prosperous, primarily through the generation and sharing of material wealth. Following the successful first WHEF conference held in Hong Kong earlier this year, a number of regional conferences are being organised around the world. The forum aims to attract participants from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and other South Pacific countries. The Hindu business community contributes significantly to trade, commerce and industry in South Pacific countries, especially in New Zealand, Australia and Fiji, a forum spokesman said. The Pacific Regional Hindu Economic Forum seeks to bring together financially successful business people such as traders, bankers, technocrats, investors, industrialists, economists, thinkers and professionals to share their business knowledge, experience, and expertise with their fellow business people with the aim of generating surplus wealth in service of society and Dharma. This conference also gives an opportunity to develop a network among business people to further strengthen and organise their roles in trade, industry, business and contribute to the economy of the Pacific Region countries. The conference organising committee is inviting two keynote speakers from India to address the forum: Prof. R Vaidyanathan, Professor of Finance, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore will speak on Global Economic Crisis and an opportunity for Hindus; and Swami Vigyananand, the founder of WHEF, will give the background of the movement. The conference will also feature group discussion sessions to discuss industry success stories, challenges and opportunities. The number of registrations will be limited to 150. The primary objectives of WHEF are to promote activities for developing enterprise and entrepreneurship globally; to develop solutions for the most crucial of the issues confronting the world economy such as sustainable development, education, eradication of poverty, climate change and infrastructure development; and to promote a value based corporate governance system through organizing seminars, conferences and research activities. Nailatikau reappointed Fiji President

Fiji's military government has appointed President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau to a second three-year term as the South Pacific nation's head of state. At a ceremony last week, attended by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, who seized power in 2006, Nailatikau, 71, was sworn in as President until 2015 under an executive decree issued by the military go2vernment. The appointment, announced on the government's website, means Nailatikau, a former army commander credited with guiding Bainimarama through his military career, will be President when Fiji holds long-awaited elections set for 2014. The largely ceremonial role of President was traditionally appointed by Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs, which Bainimarama suspended after taking power in 2006 and eventually abolished earlier this year. Fiji is preparing a new constitution after experiencing four coups since 1987, largely stemming from tensions between indigenous Fijians and ethnic Indians descended from labourers brought in by the British in the colonial era. Bainimarama tore up Fiji's previous constitution and replaced all judges with hand-picked officials in 2009, after a court ruled his coup was illegal. He has said the new constitution will enshrine principles such as one-personone-vote, an independent judiciary and transparent governance, as well as concentrating on establishing a secular, corruption-free state.

Forging ahead with vision

President Barack Obama lived through what most first time leaders dread the re-election and came out victorious. The 44th President of the United States won both the popular vote, with 50.6 per cent, as well as the electoral votes taking away 332 opposed to Romneys 206. The candidates needed to pass the threshold of 270 electoral votes to sure up their presidency. The American electoral system, though based on the same principles of democracy as England, New Zealand and other notable democracies, is unique. Each of the 50 states is given a certain number of electoral votes based on its population e.g. California 55, Illinois 20 and Wyoming only three. Almost all the states practise a winner-takes-all method so the candidate with the most votes wins all of the electoral votes for that state. While many states are largely predictable in their allegiances, i.e. Texas always votes Republican and California always votes Democrat, there are a number of swing states that usually decide the election Florida, and Ohio are examples. It is possible that the President may win the electoral votes, but lose the popular vote, as in the 2000 election, Al Gore secured the popular vote even though George Bush became President. This is not a common phenomenon however, and as mentioned before, Barack Obama won both in securing his second term, as he did for his first. President Obama now faces the challenge of the fiscal cliff, and rebuilding Americas economic prowess, which maybe have become a thing of the past. The fiscal cliff is a colloquial term for the challenge the end of 2012 will bring as the Budget Control Act of 2011 goes into effect at midnight January 1, 2013. This means temporary payroll tax cuts, certain tax cuts for corporations and the end of the tax cuts from 2001-2003, as well as spending cuts agreed on in 2011, going into effect. All this could either lead to a decrease of Americas budget deficit, or a slide into the likes of the European economic crises. Either way, this will be Obamas top economic priority and conundrum for his second term. Where, however, does New Zealand fit into all of this? On the night of November 7, Prime Minister John Key released statement congratulating President Obama on his win, and stated that he would pen a formal letter the next day. He further articulated that President Obamas re-election would provide many opportunities to strengthen the relationship of the two countries. The two leaders will meet at the East Asia Summit later this month in Cambodia. This bodes well for the Trans-Pacific Partnership, having resurfaced under the present US administration. As a free trade agreement between 11 Pacific Rim countries, it aims to make business simpler and red tape free for our traders. In his victory speech President Obama spoke about politics not being, as it is often referred to, a battle of egos, but a way forward and a way to enact change that betters a nation. In his first term, he walked into the middle of the Global Financial Crisis, and faced many criticisms for the growing budget deficit. Lets hope he uses this second opportunity to turn things around and advance a strong nation that will be all its founders hoped it would. - Pooja Sundar

Kyoto 2 wise decision or reckless resolution?

POOJA SUNDAR As announced last week, New Zealand joining Japan, Canada and Russia will not sign up for new commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. The Kyoto Protocol is a treaty to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC) that represents the commitment by developed nations in lowering global concentrations of greenhouse gasses. First adopted in 1997, the protocol came into force in early 2005. Under the agreement, 37 nations as well as the European Union limit their greenhouse gas emissions. For the first commitment period from 2008-2012, developed nations (Annex B countries) collectively agreed to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 5.2 per cent. It was intended that from the second and subsequent commitment rounds that Annex A, i.e. developing nations, would also take on the pledge in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. New Zealand expects to complete the first round of the Treaty this year, exceeding what is required of us. Australia has just recently announced that they will be adopting Kyoto 2. Climate Campaigner Simon Boxer applauds their renewed commitment citing their late entry into the original Treaty and its coal dependent economy. He sees this as a sign from the bigger nation of its dedication to towards clean energy and its sincerity about climate change. Climate Change Minister Tim Groser states that New Zealand has better options to contribute under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, than to be tied down in another binding contract until 2020. Greens climate change spokesman Kennedy Graham said the current National Government was using this as an excuse to get out of any productive and constructive efforts. "Not content to pass a law [on Thursday] to gut New Zealand's emissions trading scheme, the National Government is now out to undermine any international credibility the nation ever had on climate change." He went on to say that Australia was looking ahead and by taking such practical measures now, they would be able to sustain a stronger economy in the future thanks to cleaner ways of doing business. New Zealand would continue to have access to international carbon markets - which are developments of the Kyoto Protocol, dealing in the sale of carbon dioxide - until 2015 when countries with obligations under the first commitment period square accounts with each other. The Governments decision really does not have a direct effect until later next year and the subsequent commitment rounds. It will, however, pose a difficulty come 2015, when New Zealand would no longer have access to carbon markets. Furthermore, this decision could have an effect on New Zealands clean, green image as well as raise questions about the seriousness with which we approach global warming. The only option we have, if this decision does indeed prove to be the wrong one, is to sign on for the third and subsequent rounds of the Kyoto Protocol. Until then, all we can do is try to do our bit, by recycling, driving less, and buying energy efficient products. * Pooja Sundar is a third year law and politics student at the University of Auckland

Tackling alcohol head-on

KANWALJIt SINGH BAKSHI, NAtIONAL MP
National is committed to addressing New Zealands binge-drinking culture. We are determined to reduce alcohol-related harm including crime and disorder, and public health problems. This is important part of the Governments work to make New Zealand safer for all of our communities. Our alcohol reform package empowers communities and zeroes in on where the harm from alcohol is happening particularly around youth to help control the supply of alcohol, reduce demand, and limit alcohol-related problems. Weve also been conscious to do this in a way which doesnt unfairly penalise responsible and moderate drinkers. We want people to have a greater say about when and where alcohol is sold in their communities. Our bill will empower local communities to have more input into those decisions. Councils will be able to develop local alcohol policies to restrict or extend trading hours of licensed premises, limit locations and density of licences, and impose conditions on licensed premises such as one-way doors. We are also reducing exposure to alcohol, supermarkets and grocery stores will only be able to display and advertise alcohol in a single, non-prominent area of their store. And tighter restrictions on alcohol advertising and promotions will prevent practices such as offering free gifts with purchase of alcohol. The bill also makes it an offence to advertise discounts of more than 25% on alcohol outside of licensed premises. This will mean the good parenting of responsible adults cannot be so easily undone by the irresponsible actions of some other parents. And the need for express consent gives police a tool to intervene in unsupervised, or poorly supervised parties, such as after-ball functions. Also, problem areas such as supermarket car parks and school grounds will be able to be covered by liquor bans in a local policy. A home is where the heart is

ANUJA KOtIA PARASKAR
As usual, one morning I was having breakfast with my husband and reading the newspaper online. While reading, I came across the recent news about Auckland houses. One of NZs economists suggested Aucklanders to rent instead of buying a house. He suggested this because of the rising prices of houses in New Zealand and long-term mortgage payment. I shared this news with my husband. He asked me, Why are you looking so worried? We are renting and we dont have to pay any mortgage. I answered, I am a common married woman and I dreamt of our own house. I want to show my friends and relatives that we have our own house. He asked, So, you want a house to show them? I replied, I am not a saint and I live in a material world. He asked, What would your dream house be like? Before I could answer him, he said, I am getting late for my jobwe will talk laterbye. After he went I asked myself the same question. As soon as I thought of it, a picture of a beautiful twobedroom kiwi-style house with a small garden came into my mind. Surprisingly, at the back of my mind there was another house and I found myself in that house. This one was similar to the first one at the exterior. But it was different from inside. The interior was designed in a different way. When I looked around, I saw the walls coated with the colour of love, romance and friendship. The other walls were coated with the colour of joy, fun and freshness. Some were painted with the colour of healing and protection. Others were painted with traditional colours of peace and happiness. Some were with the colour of knowledge; power, integrity, seriousness, and some were with the color of purity and patience. The walls were built with the cement of trust. The trust between every couple and in every family member residing there. The pillars were made of relationship, support, togetherness and strong bonds, which were between family members. The windows and glasses were of transparent, honest and loyal nature towards each other. The doors were of broad mindedness and open heart of family members. They were always open for each other. The flour or the foundation was made up of moral, social and cultural values. I mean to say Sanskar. The roof was of love, unity and belongingness of family members. The ceiling was made of the sense of respect, responsibility and understanding that they had towards each other. There was a living room made of feelings, experiences and jokes that were shared between family members. This room was situated in the heart of the house. There were shelves made of discussions and decisions that were essential for keeping the living room in a systematic manner. The kitchen and dining were made up of giving, sharing and caring attitude towards each other to stay healthy. It also consisted a pantry made of various spices, sugar and salt. Those were different tastes of family life. All the members in the family enjoyed the food together. Sometimes the food was too spicy like bad times in life and sweet like good times. Every one, especially the woman in (life). The bed in the bedroom was made up of contentment and inner satisfaction. The pillow was made of positivity and free from all negative thoughts. It was so comfortable that one could have a sound inner path went to the Mandir and one could discover the essence of his/her being by walking through that path. The beautiful garden was of children and kids. The flowers of the plants looked like smiling faces of children. There were different garden tools made of discipline, love, attention and caring attitude. I found the grandparents and elders of the family doing gardening to grow plants (children) into wellshaped and healthy trees (adults). At the backside, there were bathroom and toilet, where everyone in the family got rid of the bad times, sorrows and pains of life. There was also a washing room made for cleaning all the differences that sometimes arose between family members. Everyone came out of this room with fresh and new ideas to deal with the family matters. Suddenly I heard the whistle of my pressure cooker and I came into reality from my imaginary world. In the evening when my husband came back from work, I narrated him everything that I had imagined. He said, The first picture that you saw was of a house and the second one was of a home. I asked him, So what do you think of a house? He said, I dont care about the house as we are happily living in our sweet home. I replied Yaaalso we dont have to pay the mortgages for our home. He said, Still we have to pay the mortgages. I questioned, How is it possible? He answered, The long term mortgages in the form of compromises that we make from time to time for our family and lovely home. I smiled and said, Yes, you are right! Next day, one of my friends came to meet me after a very long time. As soon as she got out of her car she asked, So, this is the rental house where you recently got shifted? And I proudly said, Yes, this is my home, happily showing it to her.

The dance artistes called tawaifs

Renowned Indian British contemporary dancer Aakash Odedra says he would love to document and learn from the last surviving Indian nautch dancers, known as 'tawaifs' who, he feels, have seen both the best and worst in life. "As a dancer, if I didn't document it I would feel irresponsible. They were responsible for holding the art form of Kathak together. I would love to absorb and understand their culture," said the 28-year-old artist, rated as the rising star of contemporary dance. The Leicester-based Odedra has been learning and performing Kathak since the age of eight. Nautch dancers were popular dancing girls who performed mostly Indian classical dances including Kathak and rose to prominence during the latter part of the Mughal rule and the rise of the British Raj. Born and brought up in Britain, Odedra, whose Kathiawari Rajput family hails from Gujarat, has trained in Bharatanatyam, IndoJazz and contemporary forms as well. As a disciple of acclaimed dancers Chitralekha Bolar and Nilima Devi in Britain and Asha Joglekar and Chhaya Kanvateh in India, Odedra is well aware of the contributions of the Nautch dancers to society. "They were wrongly branded as prostitutes as a result of the antinautch British movement in India. They were the first feminists of India. They were the first taxpaying women. They were first landowners of India. The nobles used

Breaking boundaries through evocative steps, the versatile artist has lent his repertoire of movements to compositions by renowned choreographers. For him "breaking rules, throwing them in the bin and recycling them and making something else from it" is the way to go. Performing "Rising", comprising solo work by choreographers Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherka-

to send their children there to learn etiquette," the dancer said. Odedra channels his classical dance training to infuse fluidity and life into contemporary dance - a form he says is "pretty much made for the stage". "Expressing what's relevant to

seen a different side of me, going by the choreography that he has done for me. The two strands are extremes and push me a lot." A fan of Helen and Madhuri Dixit's moves, as an Indian British, Odedra manages to blend in the best of both worlds. "I love the practicality of the British whereas India teaches you to dream. The Indian British, being outsiders to Britain and as outsiders to India, get to observe what either culture is doing. The one's who are smart enough would combine the best of both worlds," said the avid animal lover, who is fond of David Attenborough's documentaries. An on-and-off visitor to India, Odedra feels his Indian roots are responsible for his gravitation to Indian classical dance. "I am very, very spiritual. And being brought up in far away Britain, I always nursed a deep yearning to know Indian culture. I was obsessed with dance from a young age; I used to walk on my toes. Somehow I associated dance with the Indian philosophy and the natural instinct at that young age was to go there," said the artist, who was never really focussed on education. Attributing his strong connection to India to lengthy visits to his village in Gujarat as a child, Odedra recommends aspirants to remain true to their heritage. "Look under your own pillow. India has so much to offer. Though youngsters feel it's not cool to be associated with classical dance, people abroad are dying to come here," he said.

SRI SATHYA SAI AVATAR - HIS LIFE IS HIS LEGACY

Legacy what it means? Legacy is something an individual keeps for his next generations or something which the next generations inherit from an individual. A person keeps money, jewellery, landed property, royalty, patent rights, etc. It is a similar concept as inheritance and heritage. It is something we inherit from our parents and pass on to our children. For his legal heirs, thus, a common man keeps legacy in the form of material objects. Usually heritage refers to material and economical inheritance, while legacy refers to immaterial and cultural inheritance. Some families pass objects and ideas down from generation to generation. These objects and ideas can also be called legacies. It may have to do with a person or many people. Country Level: Sometimes countries or civilizations can leave a legacy. Legacies are, more or less, what we remember about a person or a country. What an individual or a country does today might, in the future, be regarded as being important enough to be thought of as a legacy from the 21st Century. In Athens, in Ancient Greece, people voted on their leaders. They created an early form of democracy. Greece & Ancient Rome voted for their leaders for many generations. Body Level: It is temporal. It diminishes and finally gets extinct with the lapse of time. Mind Level: A slightly evolved person like a poet, author, and artist keeps legacy of poetical ideas, philosophy, artistic contribution which a section of people enjoys for a conclaimed by the entire world. It lasts for a considerable length of period. Individuals can leave a historical legacy. For example, more than 2000 years ago the Greek Mathematician, Euclid of Alexandria, collected and wrote down ideas about geometry and measurement in a text called Elements. Students still use these ideas when they learn about mathematics. Legacy at the AVATAR Level: The legacy of Sri Sathya Sai Baba may consist of several parts. 1) Social care (Inspiration for others) and that is the way for our continuous communion with Him. LOVE is therefore HIS greatest legacy, which may not be touched but is real and universal and experienced by all. It belongs to all mankind, not just to a few. It cannot be appropriated by anybody but can only be shared and experienced, for the redemption of one and all. Educare (The True Education): The next part of His Legacy is Education. While many others talked about it, HE postulated and introduced in His educational institutions human values based educational curriculum. The system of Integral Education implemented in the Sai University is unique and unlike any other. Education in Human Values has many concepts introduced by Sri Sathya Sai Baba, including 3-HV, and Educare. The education given in His institutions is for life and not merely for earning a living. Right from the stage of childhood, such value-based education is available in the Bal Vikas classes which are conducted throughout the length and breadth of India and in many other countries through the full-time Sai schools and Sai University. This legacy of values-based Sai Education is His priceless gift to humanity for posterity. Sri Sathya Sai Organisation (Divine Vehicle for the Spiritual journey): The next part of His legacy is the Sri Sathya Sai Organisation, which is active in all over the world. It is an instrument created by HIM to enable all to perform their respective sadhana and achieve their spiritual goals through it. The Organisation has three wings - the devotional, educational and service. One can choose any to perform their seva and sadhana. Today in India alone, there are many hundreds thousands members who voluntarily serve with love and devotion. They include government officers and bureaucrats, doctors, engineers, judges and lawyers, professors and teachers, legislators, farmers, and students. They work in over many thousands of villages, slums, hospitals, old age homes, jails, orphanages and in disaster areas, inspired by HIS Message 's message that Service To Man Is Service To God. Many of them have never even had a chance to talk to swami, yet they have been supercharged by his divinity and have dedicated their lives to selfless service. The Sai Organisation, which is active all over the world. HE does not only belong to his country of physical birth or to Indians but to the entire world and beyond. People from all over the world go to Puttaparthi in millions for His Love and Inspiration and they will continue to do so for He has become a part of their lives forever. The activities of the Sai devotee will continue to increase in the future. The Youth are giving a new dynamism and energy

Legacy at Various Levels: Historical Level: In historical terms, a legacy is something that is handed down from one period of time to another period of time. A historical legacy can be a positive thing or a negative thing. For example, the invention of the wheel (for carts, as a pottery wheel, as a grinding wheel to help turn grain into flour, and as an early water wheel) in Mesopotamia can be seen as something positive. The development of slavery is a negative legacy.

siderable time. This legacy gives emotional and mental satisfaction which is supposed to be of a higher level than that at the material level. Intellect Level: A talented scientist engaging himself in scientific research works and brings out new ideas and concepts which lead to production of new inventions. They make life more comfortable. Some of them narrow down the geographical boundaries and make the world a small family! Such legacy is

2) Love (The Ultimate Goal) 3) Educare (The True Education) 4) Sri Sathya Sai Organisation (Divine Vehicle for the Spiritual journey) Social Care (Inspiration for others: He has set up the Institutions such as Schools, University, Hospitals, Ashrams, etc that are running for decades which offer free high quality education and most modern medical treatment to all, irrespective of religion, caste, creed or income. Thus, the working Models for others to get inspiration and motivation to set up similar examples of love and service to humanity. Thousands have benefited and they are indeed the living proofs of Babas compassion and love. These are the material parts of His Legacy, which are there for the whole world to see and experience Love (The Ultimate Goal): Sri Sathya Sai Baba descended for this very purpose, to awaken the inherent Divinity in mankind through Love. HE was just Love that transcended all barriers and limits and encompassed the entire creation. He has lit the lamp of love in millions of hearts, the brilliance of which inspires them to transform their lives and radiate that love in their daily lives. This love makes those individuals caring and sharing persons, who collectively engage in the society and by their actions, motivate others to also be caring and sharing, leading to a general improvement of society. HIS inspiration of Love to millions of individuals is translated verily into Love in Action all over the world. This Love transforms lives every second. Life acquires a new meaning; one may call it a new path - Prema Yoga which embodies all the other yogas of Karma, Bhakti and Jnana within itself. He intensified, God is Love and Live in Love

to the Organisation, using new tools and technology to improve the efficiency of their Seva. This Legacy of Sri Sathya Sai Baba is created for human good and welfare is always His, never to be taken away by anyone but only to be shared and experienced by personal involvement. The legacy of the present Avatar, Sri Sathya Sai, is not restricted to His Educational Institutions (Educare), General and Super Speciality Hospitals (Medicare), Water Projects, Village Integration and Rural Development Projects (Sociocare), Restoration of Vedic Dharma through Yagnyas and Spiritual literature (Vedicare) and such other physical and visible attainments. In fact, it is limitless and unbounded, gross and subtle, external and internal, extensive and intensive, temporal and eternal, material and spiritual, visible and invisible, subjective and objective, personal and collective, private and public, here and elsewhere. It is available to anyone, whether he is a devotee, believer, non-believer, critic, sceptic, saint or sinner. The legacy of Sri Sathya Sai is a vast and deep ocean available to anyone in any measure depending upon the cleanliness, purity and size of the pot he brings. As Sri Sathya Sai is a Poorna Avatar, His legacy must also be Poorna (full). But Poorna cannot be measured. It is only Apoorna (incomplete) which can be measured. Therefore, it is impossible to spell out various facets of His legacy in totality. However, an attempt can be made to explore into different realms of His legacy. Love is HIS greatest legacy, which may not be touched but is real and universal and experienced by all. It belongs to all mankind, not just to a few. It cannot be appropriated by anybody but can only be shared and experienced, for the redemption of one and all. His legacy is His eternal message to Humanity. Blessed are those who knew Him. Even more blessed are those who share His legacy of Love All, Serve All and Help Ever Hurt Never. The word LEGACY throws some light on different forms of legacy which HE has bestowed to mankind: L for Love E for Education & Educare G for Grace A for Attunement, Atonement & Adoration C for Constant Integrated Awareness Y for You Sri Sathya Sai said, My Life is My Message. Therefore, His Life is His Legacy Ravinder Grover (Ref: various Sai literature and articles on Sai)

says. Jamalis biggest support is her husband, Rauzar Khan. I like the fact that she sings. She teaches around six girls at home. Many of these girls go to school but we want our girls to earn with their folk music, Khan said. Ghavra Devi Bikaneri, a blind exponent of Nirgun folk songs and the dholakia (percussion) from Bikaner district, has travelled all over the country to render her Krishnabhajans. For the 70-year-old vocalist, robed in saffron, music is truth, inner consciousness and the road to freedom. The spirited Ghavra makes around Rs 10,000 from music every month. A few years ago, she refused a crash award from the West Bengal government because she was told to wear a sari to the ceremony. I lead life on my terms, the musician said. Last year, a Bhopi folk singer from Rajasthan, Bhanwari Devi, received an overwhelming response from the British audience at the Edinburgh Festival. I loved the authenticity and purity of her voice, said Jonathan Mills, the director of the Edinburgh International Festival, who was in the country last month. The soul of the folk music from India has the ability to hit you in the pit of your stomach, said Mills, scouting for avenues to take more Indian folk singers, including women, to Edinburgh next year. In many ways women in villages are the custodians of culture because they are the custodians of the family and communities, said Divya Bhatia, director of the Rajasthan International Folk Festival. Music comes to them naturally, Bhatia says.

The real voices of india

Folk music is silently tipping the gender balance in northern, eastern and southern India with more women from little known village communities using it as a legitimate grassroots voice - and are being heard across the country and abroad. Sugna Devis voice rings like an untamed desert bird soaring in flight from behind her ghunghat (veil) - a swathe of cotton drape that covers her head. She sings as she wraps up her morning meal on the chulha (hearth). Sugna Devi, one of the few women vocalists among the tribal snake-charmers Kalbeliya community at Osia Tehsil Palodi, a village in Bikaner, is a global celebrity. She sings while most of the Kalbeliya women dance. I learnt to sing Kalbeliya folk songs from my mother nearly 35 years ago. I did not want to dance like other women in the community. I was allowed to follow my vocation because my voice was powerful, Sugna Devi says. The spurt in cultural festivals like the Rajasthan International Folk Festival, Delhi International Arts Festival, Jaipur Literature Festival and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations-sponsored folk festivals have opened the doors to women in the last decade to bring folk genres on to the main music stage. In the villages of West Bengal women Baul exponents like Parvathy Baul and Mimlu Sen have been carrying the tradition to niche folk platforms in Europe and the US while Maithili women singers like Sharda Sinha of Bihar have kept the traditional wedding songs alive. It sure is a new sound of revolution from the margins of urban India. In southern India, women folk musicians are the lifeline of

Folk exponent Jamali Bai of Bikaner singing

village and temple festivals. And in the northeast, women sing of life as they work. Sugna Devi, who has performed in Australia and the US, uses music as a medium of empowerment in her village. It spells freedom for me. I teach 50 Kalbeliya girls to sing in my community. I want more women to sing and make a career out of it, rather than dancing... It is a process of economic and social empowerment, the musician says. One of her students is Rekha Devi, a young Kalbeliya woman, who has been training under Sugna Devi for the last three years. I sing at weddings and at concerts with Sugna Devi. I prefer singing to dancing... I wish more

women from our Kalbeliya community would sing, Rekha said. Her father Puran Nath has four girls and he promises to teach all of them to sing. I will love it if one of them makes a profession out of singing in Bollywood, Puran Nath says. The women musicians from his community make between Rs 1,000 to Rs 4,000 every concert. Jamali Bai, a folk singer from Bikaner, has been singing Maand Lok Geet on All India Radio for the last 40 years. My mother and other women of the village would sing at Jagran - the vigil of the goddess. I would hear them sing as a child and was memorised by the songs. Later, I began to sing, Jamali Bai

D I A R Y
Rituparna confirmed for Dard-E-Disco
Bhandarkar is to express the true talent as an actress where you actually get a unique space where you get a podium to play the character you are portraying in the film, said Rituparna.

I wanted to be an actor
He is an accomplished writer, poet and lyricist, but Javed Akhtar says his childhood aspiration, just like every kid, was to become an actor. All children, when they watch a film, they end up thinking everything that a hero does -- action, singing, etc. So all of them want to become actors. Similarly, even I wanted to be an actor when I was a child, Akhtar said. It is only once you grow up that you know that a movie has a director, a screenplay writer, a lyricist, a composer, and other technicians. But till a certain age, you believe the hero is everything, he added. The veteran writer, 66, spoke on the sidelines of the launch of the second season of Zee Classics Classic Legends to be aired on Nov 18.

Actress Rituparna Sengupta has been confirmed as the female lead in Hindi film Dard-E-Disco opposite Akshay Kapoor and singer-turned-actor Bappi Lahiri. Bapi Da is like a family, a brother, a person whom I adore and respect for what he is today. And it was an immense pleasure to share the sets with one of the most saluted music director of the nation, said Rituparna. I did learn a lot working with Bappi da and I look forward to an enduring relationship with him, she said. A popular name in the Bengali film industry, the award-winning actress who has worked with stalwarts like Aparna Sen and Madhur Bhandarkar has shifted her entire base from Kolkata to Mumbai. Her last Hindi film was Madhur Bhandarkars Dil To Bachha Hai Ji (2011) opposite Ajay Devgn. Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji was a unique film, where I shared a very comfortable space playing the role of Ajay Devgns wife, she said. To work with Madhur

'Talaash' not an outand-out entertainer

Talaash will get the suspense drama genre back in the industry, feels Aamir Khan. The actor speaks to Sreya Basu about the thriller and Dhoom 3
What made you agree to Talaash? When I heard the script of Talaash, I loved it. Thats when I decided to associate myself with the film. The screenplay has been penned by Reema Kagti, who is also the director of the film, and Zoya Akhtar. How will you define your character in the film? This film is more of a suspense drama where I am playing a police inspector (Inspector Surjan Singh Shekhawat). Apart from investigating the case, this person is dealing with some things in his past which he has not come to terms yet. And thats where he is internally battling with himself. Kareena has an item song in the film. Is that a part of the film or was included just for the sake of it? The film is about a certain underbelly of the city and Kareena plays a hooker in the film. So that is definitely a part of our story. Do you know Talaash was first offered to Shah Rukh Khan? No I dont. In fact, why Talaash, even for my other films I dont know who was offered them before me. Is there a pressure on you to make sure your films do well at the boxoffice? There is always a pressure of doing good, especially if your last films were successful. And

'Delhi Safari' shortlisted for Oscars

After wooing the audiences worldwide, Nikhil Advanis animated adventure Delhi Safari has made its grand entry to worlds most prestigious movie recognition award ceremony. The film has been shortlisted for the 85th Academy Awards (Oscars) in the animation category. Directed by Nikhil Advani, Delhi Safari is an animated family film with real world themes about urban sprawl and the effects of humanity on the global eco-system. The idea of this film came to Advani on one of the many long nature walks that he enjoys taking with his six-year-old daughter. The balance between making a film fun and meaningful is what sets Delhi Safari apart from the many animated films released in this category. With a strong and crisp plot, its a brave departure from the stereotypical Bollywood animation films. The English version of the film features the voices of Jason Alexander, Cary Elwes, Christopher Lloyd, Jane Lynch, Vanessa Williams and Brad Garrett. Mending the gap between Hollywood and Bollywood, Advanis Delhi Safari is an entertaining crossover piece and well deserving for being shortlisted for the Oscars, feel industry experts.

Are you set to give a competition to Akshay Kumar (Rowdy Rathore), Ajay Devgn (Singham) and Salman Khan (Dabangg) who have already played cops recently? I dont think I am competing with anyone. All the films where Akshay, Ajay and Salman have played police inspectors were very successful films. But my character in Talaash is a bit different. My character in the film is not as colourful as that of Chulbul Pandey in Dabangg. Surjan Singh Shekhawat is struggling with A still from Talaash himself and his past and Talaash is not an out-and-out entertainment film. However it is very entertaining to me from a different angle. Colonial Cousins are back after 11 years

the official unveiling of album Colonial Cousins Once More. Speaking on the launch of their new album, Leslie said, Were very happy to be launching an album together. We feel that the time is right to do this and there is a great platform right now for independent artists to really f lourish. The launch is a great concept and we had a lot of fun doing it. We really wanted out fans to be a part of the music video and we did it for the people by the people. We very excited about the album, and were even more excited about this launch. Its great to be doing something different and were going to experience this for the first time and were happy that our fans got to experience it with us. added Hariharan. The album is expected to be a reconnaissance of the classic charm of the cousins with a fresh sound and a well-rounded blend of genres ranging from rock, blues, soul all coming together in a seemingly effortless blend of Indian and western in true colonial style. Since the inception of Colonial Cousins in 1996, they have enjoyed massive popularity and their unique blend of traditional and contemporary music won over the hearts of audiences all over the country. With massive public acclaim, the pair received the prestigious invitation to perform on MTV Unplugged in London, an honour that was bestowed on an Indian band for the first time. They also won the MTV Asia Viewers Choice Award, the Channel V Award and the US Billboards Award. The two have had three successful career albums, with their last work in 2001 with the release of Aatma post which they went on to explore and flourish in their own individual careers. They attribute the long break to lack of time, having been caught up with their own projects over the last decade. Now, 11 years later, they have come together to release their brand new album Colonial Cousins Once More.

eading music company Universal Music launched popular band Colonial Cousins brand new studio album Colonial Cousins Once More in Mumbai last month. Pioneers of the sound that fuses Indian and Western musical genres, Hariharan and Leslie Lewis known together as the Colonial Cousins are back after more than a decade to enthrall their legion of fans.

Devraj Sanyal, Managing Director, Universal Music India & SAARC, said, Colonial Cousins are a legend. From 1996 to date its been a momentous journey. This album is one that we think will break all records of the past simply because the music is incredible and in the now. In a first of its kind event, to launch their latest album, the duo

took to the jostling promenade of Carter Road in the busy suburb of Bandra, Mumbai, in a musical ensemble that worked its way from Otters Club to the amphitheatre, all along performing music from their new album on top of a 40 foot canter. The performance brought out fans galore from all around who came to watch the legends. The event concluded with

I have a connectivity with the audience due to my middle-class roots

John Abraham tells Sreya Basu what it takes to have the hottest body in tinsel town, among other things
What does good living mean to you? A good living to me means living a very disciplined and clean life. Not only in your lifestyle but also in your mind, you need to be very clean, straight and happy. What is that one important tip you will give to live a healthy life? Have a control over your diet and everything will be fine in your life. Recently on the sets, I was offered a plate of gulab jamun and samosa; I was tempted, but I told myself that this is not allowed and walked away. I thought you will recommend regular workouts. See, most of us, who are working all day outside, dont get time to work out. Its a difficult task to visit the gym every day. Again, not all of us can afford the high membership fees of a gym or have to devote more time to family. So the time we dont get has to be mended with a good diet. According to me a healthy life is like a tripod it consists of good sleep, good food and a good workout routine. So if you cant exercise properly, just eat right eat on time and eat the right food. Is it that easy to get a fit body? Its very easy to get a fit body. You dont need to go to gym play a sport like football, tennis or squash. Many of your contemporaries, especially actresses, are coming up with fitness and yoga DVDs. Are you also planning one? Who inspired you to build a good physique? I have only one international inspiration and thats Sylvester Stallone. I started gymming after seeing his films. It is said woman are more spiritual than men. Would you differ? Are you spiritual? Women are a far superior race. But spirituality is an individual choice. I am a very spiritual person since my childhood though I dont believe too much in religion. I believe in the saying that if you do good, you will get good. I like doing good work and thats very important. Lots have been said about your break-up (with actress Bipasha Basu). Everyone faces some tough situations in life. But as far as I am concerned, I am very happy right now. I have not planned a fitness DVD yet. But I am planning to open a gym. Trust me, I need another one year or so to get into the optimum shape. Most of us have a good upper body our arms, chest are perfect. But youngsters must realize exercising does not mean working only your upper body, but your entire body; not just your arms, your legs must also be in a good shape. With a chiselled body, you are a fitness icon among the masses. How does it feel? I have a connectivity with the audience. Since I came from a middleclass family, everyone thinks that if John Abraham can build such a body, even we can do it. Thats a beautiful connection I share with the guys. Also I have a lot of respect for the kind of appreciation I get from the girls. At the same time, I am aware of the fact that I have to keep working hard on my body. Which actor do you think started the trend of taking off shirts in Hindi films? Men used to take off shirts even before me. But I think the trend of building a good body was started by Sanjay Dutt, then came Salman Khan, followed by John Abraham. You are quite excited about your upcoming film Shootout At Wadala. Tell us about your character in the movie. The most special thing about the film is that its a true, documented story. I play Manya Surve, who was a dreaded gangster who lived (career-wise) between 1979 and 1982. Every actor waits for a film in his career-cycle where people would say it was his path-breaking performance. After New York (2009) and Force (2011), Shootout At Wadala will be a film that will take my acting skills to a different level. And hence, I am very excited about it.

Kolkata Film Fest starts with protests, arrests

round 200 people protested in front of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee's car with black flags today evening in Kolkata, while 15 protesters have been arrested outside the venue of Kolkata Film Festival, even as it was being inaugurated by Bollywood megastars Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. The protesters claimed that the controversial Bengali film Nandigramer Chokher Paani (Tears of

Nandigram) starring critically acclaimed Bengali actress Bidita Bag in the lead and revolving around the Nandigram massacre and Naxalites, was being deliberately ignored by the Kolkata Film Festival. They rued that inspite of screenings and rave reviews at various other film festivals across the globe, the Bengali film was not being screened in West Bengal itself because of its volatile content. Nandigramer Chokher Paani has been shot at real locations with real villagers used as actors for the movie. The lead actress Bidita had even survived a Naxalite attack while shooting for the movie.

Killer of a countdown this

ARWA JANJALI
o watch a crackling murder mystery live on stage will always be an experience unmatched to the thrills and fancies of the big screen. Along with all its technical glitches and limitations in terms of set, sound and lighting, the honesty that theatre brings with it makes a stage production far more special than any of its film counterparts. MigHT-i Theatres Dus is enjoyable for this sheer honesty of the medium and the courage of its makers to pull off a crime thriller as complex as Agatha Christies And Then There Were None (also known as Ten Little Indians) with utmost simplicity. In his Hindi version of the ace crime writers most popular mystery, writer-director Prashant Belwalkar doesnt deviate much from the original play, making his adaptation as accurately close to Christies. Although he chooses to retain the original ending of Christies 1939 novel by the same name, which she decided to change while writing the play based on the book four years later. So we have Judge Dharmadhikari (Shailesh Prajapati) in the role of Justice Lawrence Wargrave, who commits suicide in the end, after meticulously plotting murder of his nine victims. Set in a lonely palace on the hills near Shimla, instead of a vague Indian Island off the coast of Devon in Christies play, Dus begins with the 10 guests arriving at the palace after receiving an invitation from A J BEEN (a homophone for Ajnabee, meaning Stranger in Hindi). Each one of them have committed a crime in their past, for which they escaped punishment. As a result, they must die now. Dus, like most plays, relies heavily on its

bunch of actors to create the intrigue and suspense in the story, and take it forward. And do they do justice. The cast, consisting of a mix of theatre professionals and hobby artistes, show a commendable flair for acting, including the ones who belong to diversely different professions, having little experience in theatre. Whether its Rupal Solanki as the attractive and funny secretary of the hosts, Santanu Ghosh as the detective with a sonorous voice (also the set designer for the play), Kkuntal Trivedi as the flirtatious guy and the only one whos death is more of an accident or Prajapati as the killer judge (also the light designer for the play), everyone makes their parts convincing enough and thus, make Dus a gripping watch.

Stills from the play

And of course, there were the amusing moments. The disappearance of the soldier statuettes, for instance, was a huge distrac-

tion. Even though it was a deliberate attempt to have a hand come out from behind the curtain to pull a statuette as an indicator of the next death and also to hint at the fact that the murderer was an actual person every time that happened, there were giggles in the audience. This is Belwalkars second adaptation of Agatha Christies work, the first one being Jaal The Trap, based on her play The Mousetrap, and staged last year at the South Side Arts Festival as a part of Christies 120th Anniversary celebrations. MigHT-i Theatre returned to the South Side Arts Festival again this year with Dus, which was staged on November 3. Indian Weekender and Humm FM 106.2 were the media sponsors.

Diwali ke side effects...

Diwali was full of happiness but for losing weight it was a Diwala! (Oh its a Hindi word for bankruptcy)... and you know that it is, your weighing machine doesnt lie. It is understandable that you had to see your friends and families this Diwali and you couldnt avoid to eat what they offered you and you were well over in calorie count, and you could not stick to your diet. So all that weight loss and hard work has gone in drains? Here are a few ideas to remind you to get back to fitness path: 1. Dont skip meals, and try not to go more than 4 or 5 hours without eating (post festival compensation doesnt work that way!) Feeling empty at mealtime may hinder your ability to make healthy choices and trigger overeating. 2. Adjust your meals a little. Eat less in breakfast and at lunch and then have a larger dinner with guestsIf they are still there. 3. Avoid coffee, tea and cold drinks if possible for November month. While they do give you a short energy burst, there is a drastic drop in energy after about half an hour which might make you even more

4. Chose healthiest possible options and keep portion sizes small now. Try having nuts instead of sweets and bakery items. Diwali is over so should be the parties. Take a break now. 5. Use the stairs where possible and burn some calories, consider that as a workout. 6. Drink 1 glass of water every 1 hour so that you dont get dehydrated and you will automatically be eating less. 7. T r y to balance out those Diwali calorie bonanza fat tires in problem areas with a healthy, vegetable meal at home. Eat lighter for next 2 weeks. 8. Last but not the least, if you cant lose that weight because its a right time to do so then we are back after a long Diwali break of 4 days and you can join us. Diwali, we are sure was fun for you and now is the time to give some fun to your body. Be smart and eat right.
