2nd ANNUAL SCHOOL ESSAY COMPETITION

sponsored by BODIES…The Exhibition, New York City

BODIES…The Exhibition, NYC, now in its fourth year at the South Street
Seaport Exhibition Centre, is pleased to announce the 2009 Essay Competition
for middle school and high school students in the tri-state area. This year,
BODIES NYC asks students to choose a body system and compare it to a
mechanical system. BODIES NYC has developed this program to promote
public health education and critical thinking in students. There will be two
competition categories, middle school and high school. One winning essay will
be selected in each category. The writer of the winning essay will be
awarded a field trip to BODIES NYC for his or her class.

ESSAY TOPIC
Choose a body system and compare it to a mechanical system. Briefly describe
the functions of their major components. Discuss when the mechanical system
was invented, who invented it and why it was invented. Compare the necessity
of the mechanical system with that of the body system. Explain how attending
BODIES …The Exhibition will help you understand your chosen body system.
What information does the Exhibition have that goes beyond textbooks and
models and how will this help in your learning process?

ESSAY CRITERIA:

1) The essay must be no less than 300 words and no more than 600.
2) The essay must be composed solely by the student.
3) The essay must be type written and double spaced.
4) Sources must be properly documented.
COMPETITION RULES AND ENTRY PROCEDURES:

1) The writer must represent that the essay is an original work composed without
assistance.
2) BODIES NYC will accept a maximum of 10 entries per school per secondary
level, i.e. 10 entries from one middle or intermediate school and 10 from one high
school.
3) The writer must specify his/her grade level.
4) The entries must be submitted between February 1 and March 30, 2009.
5) Entries will be required to be submitted by the school and not the individual
student. Schools will be encouraged to submit their “10 best essays”.
6) Entry must be accompanied by official, duly executed BODIES School Essay
Competition Entry Form. (Go to www.bodiestheexhibition.com to download form)
7) Entries will be accepted via e-mail and should be sent to contest@bodiesny.com.

8) The field trip must be booked on or before the 15th of June 2009.
9) The school is responsible for all transportation to and from BODIES NYC.
10) The essays will be the sole property of BODIES NYC.
11) The school must agree to comply with a degree of publicity surrounding the
Essay Competition winner including but not limited to photographs and reprinting
of the essay.
12) Members of the winning classes attending the exhibition will be expected to
adhere to all rules and regulations that govern attendance at BODIES…The
Exhibition, NYC

JUDGING CRITERIA:

1) To what degree are the topics of the essay, as established by the competition,
addressed? Are all topics covered?
2) Is the essay well researched? Does the writer support their statements with
documented facts?
3) Is the essay well structured? Does it include a statement of intention, support
for and achievement of intention and a conclusion?
4) Does the writer present a unique writing style or a discernible voice?

PRIZES:

1) The winning essay receives free admission to BODIES NYC


for a class of no more than 40 and no less than 15. (Transportation not
included.)
2) The winning essay receives audio guides for their class and/or a guided tour
with a staff docent.
3) The winning essay receives lunch vouchers courtesy of the South Street
Seaport.
