SUPPLY AND DEMAND ANALYSIS (SDA) EXCEL

DIRECTIONS FOR USE


SDA Excel was developed by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Employment Security Division, Labor Market Information Section, Occupational Data Unit For more information on SDA Excel or Jobs4TN, please contact: Ms. Martha Wettemann martha.wettemann@tn.gov Mr. Kevin Hedges Kevin.hedges@tn.gov SDA Excel can be run on any computer that has Excel 2007 or 2010. Copy the program into a folder of your choice or onto your desktop.

Glossary
CIP Classification of Instructional Programs. The CIP is a 6-digit code that corresponds to an instructional program at a specified educational level. LWIA Local Workforce Investment Area. These areas refer to one of the 13 economic regions in the state of Tennessee. Each LWIA is made up of a cluster of neighboring counties. SOC Standard Occupational Classification. The SOC is a 6-digit code that corresponds to a unique occupation. UI Unemployment Insurance. This acronym refers to the number of people claiming unemployment insurance (claimants).

To operate SDA Excel:


The worksheet will automatically open to the MAIN tab:

1) Enable macros
Click on the Options box at the top of the spreadsheet then click on Enable macros. If you do not do this, the regions and programs of study will not change.

2) Select a region
Use the dropdown box in the top left corner to select a single LWIA or the state of Tennessee.

-ORUse the dropdown box below it to select a county, which will direct you to the correct LWIA. The region (LWIA) or state should display on the top line of Column D, highlighted in blue.

3) Select a Program of Study


There are three ways to find a program of study outlook table:

1 Use the dropdown box at the center top of the spreadsheet (in Column C). Select a program or
sub-program of study, such as Early Childhood Education Development and Services or Veterinary Technology. NOTE: A complete list of the programs and sub-programs of study can be found in the tab labeled cluscode, with the first two digits in Column C identifying the cluster.

-OR2 Use the dropdown box below to select a CTE course by name, such as Nursing Education or
Greenhouse Management. NOTE: You may have to click on another program first, then click back on the desired program title.

-OR3 Select by program name from the CIP dropdown box below, such as Licensed
Practical/Vocational Nurse (511613)(Post. 1-2 year cert.) or Agricultural Business and Management, General (010101)(Masters Degree).

NOTE: If you choose a CIP with no completers at the specified degree level, you will receive the following message:

To search for degree levels which have data for a particular CIP code: Click on the Supply tab at the bottom of the worksheet. Using the filter menu to the right of the code column, first un-check Select all, then choose another CIP Code.

The degree levels and LWIA code will be shown. For a definition of completer types, see the tab comptype.

Remove any filters you have used before returning to the Main tab.

4) Display results
Return to the Main tab and click Update. Results will display as follows:

Demand table
This table shows the occupations most likely related to training; their current annual employment; their expected growth rate; annual median salary; and the usual educational requirements.

Supply table
This table shows the number of completers in a recent year at all relevant education levels, including secondary, certificate, associates degree, bachelors degree, graduate degree, and WIA completers. If secondary courses are shown, the CTE course numbers appear in the column to the right of the WIA field.

5) Interpret results Supply and demand analysistable, grade, and chart


SDA Excel compares the DEMAND (the total number of job openings expected for one year) [first yellow box] to the SUPPLY (the total number of completers) [second yellow box]. It divides supply by demand to obtain the SUPPLY/DEMAND RATIO. This is shown on the bottom in the third yellow box, Supply/Demand Ratio.

If this number is below 1.5, there is a shortage of completers and more training may be recommended. If it is above 1.5, competition will be stiffer. The outlook statement to the right provides further analysis information. The chart and ratios below also include the number of unemployment insurance claimants currently looking for jobs who also will be competing with current training program graduates.

Scrolling
The correct data should appear. To see the entire screen, scroll to the left using the bottom left arrow.

Printing
The spreadsheet can be printed on one page, using < Ctrl P > or the printer icon.

Returning to the main worksheet


If you select a different worksheet and need to return to the main worksheet, press < Ctrl J > on the keyboard.

Finding the high-demand programs of study in your region Find your region Press < Ctrl L >. You will see a filter screen.

At the top of Column C, click on the down arrow.

Click on the Select All box to clear the selections. Click on the correct Local Workforce Investment Area (LWIA). Click OK.

List high-demand programs of study


Next, click on Column D. Using the down arrow, click on the Select All box to clear the selections. Select grades A, B, and C to view the programs of study with

positive demand. Click OK to obtain the list.

6) Close the program Closing SDA Excel: Do NOT save changes.


When you exit the program, you will be asked if you want to save changes. Always select Dont Save, or the program will retain the changes from your work session.
