1. (a) Discuss the merits and demerits of individual and group drives. (b) A 250V D.C shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.5 and eld resistance of 250. When driving a constant torque load at 600rpm, the motor draws 21A. What will be the new speed of the motor, if an additional 250 resistance is inserted in the eld circuit? 2. (a) Give classication of various electric heating methods along with brief account of their working principle? (b) A 20KW, 1-, 220V resistance oven employs a circular nickel chrome wire for its heating elements. If the wire temperature is not exceed 11700 C and temperature of charge is to be 5000 C, calculate the length and size of wire required. Assume a radiating eciency of 0.6 and the specic resistance of nickel chrome 100x106 cm and emissivity 0.9. 3. (a) With necessary gures, explain the processes of carbon arc welding and metallic arc welding. (b) Explain briey the following modes of heat transfer i. Conduction ii. Convection iii. Radiation 4. (a) State and prove the laws of illumination. (b) An illumination of 300 Lux is to be provided in the class room 20m x 10m with 40 W uorescent lamp. Determine the number and layout of lamps in the lighting installation. Assume suitable data. 5. (a) Explain the construction and operation of uorescent tube and compare it with tungsten lament lamp. (b) A 250 C.P lamp is hung 4m above the centre of a circular area of 6m diameter. Calculate the illumination at the (i) Centre of area (ii) periphery of the area (iii) average illumination. What will be average illumination if reector of 60% eciency is used? 6. (a) What are the dierent systems of track electrication? (b) State the advantages of electric traction over other non-electrical systems of traction including stream traction. 7. (a) Sketch the typical speed-time curve for the train movement and from these derive a simplied speed-time curve (b) A train has schedule speed of 30 Kmph over a level track. Distance between stations being 1 km. Station stopping time is 20seconds. Assuming braking retardation of 3 kmphps and maximum speed 25% greater than average speed, calculate acceleration required to run the service. 8. (a) Describe the procedure of calculating the specic energy consumption of an electric train. (b) A 200 tonne motor coach having 4 motors, each developing 6000 N.M torque during acceleration, starts from rest. If up gradient is 30 in 1000, gear ratio 4, gear transmission eciency 90%, wheel radius 45cm., train resistance 50N/tone, addition of rotational inertia 10%, calculate time taken to attain speed of 50kmph.

1. (a) Discuss the dierent types of drives required for transmission of power from the driving machines to loads. (b) A 200V shunt motor having armature resistance of 0.4 armature current of 20A on full load and runs at 600 r.p.m. If resistance of 0.5 is placed in the armature circuit, nd the speed at (i) Full load torque (ii) Half full load torque (iii) What is ratio of stalling torque to full load torque. 2. (a) What are the factors which decide the frequency and voltage of the dielectric heating? Derive an expression for the heat produced in a dielectric material. (b) A 3- electric arc furnace has the following data: Current drawn=5000A, Arc voltage=50V, Resistance of transformer referred to secondary=0.002, Reactance of transformer referred to secondary= 0.004. Calculate the power factor and KW drawn from the supply. 3. (a) Describe with neat sketches various methods of electric resistance welding. Give its merits and demerits with respect to arc welding. (b) What are the advantages of electric heating? And list the properties of electric heating element. 4. (a) Dene the following terms i. Luminous ux ii. Lumen iii. Lamp Eciency iv. Space-height ratio. (b) It is required to provide an illumination of 100 lumens/m2 in a workshop hall 40m x 10m. Assume depreciation factor is 0.8 and coecient of utilization is 0.4 and eciency of lamps is 14 Lumens/Watt. Calculate number of lamps and their positions when seven trusses are provided at a mutual distance of 5m. 5. (a) Explain with a neat diagram the principle of operation of a sodium vapour lamp. Mention its applications. (b) A light source having an intensity of 700C.P. in all directions is tted with a reector so that it directs 70% of its light alone a beam having a divergence of 200 . What is the total light ux emitted along the beam? What will be average illumination produced on a surface normal to the beam direction at a distance of 25m? Calculate also the C.P of the lamp and the reector as viewed from the illuminated surface. 6. (a) State the advantages of electric traction over other non-electrical systems of traction including steam traction. (b) 400 tonne goods train is to be hauled by a locomotive up a gradient of 2%, with acceleration of 1 kmphps. Coecient of adhesion is 20%, track resistance 40 N/tonne and eective rotating masses 10% of dead weight. Find the weight of locomotive and number of axles if axle load is not increased beyond 22 tonne. 7. (a) What are the dierent methods of approximation of speed-time curves? Derive expressions for distance travelled using quadrilateral approximation method of V(t) curve. (b) A section of tramway ABC is 6km. long and earthed at A. Its resistance is 0.01 ohm/km and loading of 200 amperes/km uniformly distributed. Negative feeder with booster is taken o from point B, 4km from A. If potential of B is 4 volts above earth, calculate the rating of booster, negative feeder resistance being 0.02ohm. 8. (a) What is tractive eort of a train and what are its functions? Derive an expression for the tractive eort developed by a train unit. (b) Two motors of each of 1500V and armature resistance 0.2ohm take 500 amperes during starting, If eective weight of train is 145 tonne, and dead weight of 130 tonne, track resistance of 50 N/tonne, tractive eort/motor 40000 newtons, speed at the end of starting period 40kmph, nd i. Duration of starting period. ii. Speed of train at transition. iii. Rheostatic loss.

Calculate the resistance to be inserted in series so as to reduce the speed to 800 r.p.m. Assuming torque to vary as square of the speed and linear magnetization curve. 2. (a) Explain briey the materials of heating elements. (b) A low frequency induction furnace, whose secondary voltage is maintained constant at 10V, takes 400kw at 0.6 power factor, when the hearth is full. Assume the resistance of the secondary circuit to vary inversely as the height of the charge and reactance to remain constant. Find the height up to which the hearth should be lled to obtain maximum heat. 3. (a) What is resistance welding? What are its limitations.
