Introduction WinDOM for PC


Product Description

WinDOM for PC is an intelligent chip that instantly transforms your traditional X86
computers, thin client, out-of-date PC, Book-Size PC or Tablet PC to a WinDOM PC (WBT).
It replaces your old hard disk and operating system with its own embedded OS build on a
disk on module. Simply plug it into your PC’s primary IDE slot and your PC is immediately
transformed to a WinDOM PC.

WinDOM for PC enables your computer with Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and allows
instant connection to Window NT 4.0 Terminal Server, Window 2000 Server or Windows
2003 Server. This allows running Windows applications centrally and independently on
your server.

With WinDOM for PC, your WinDOM PC can also connect to your server and use the data,
applications, and network resources that are on your server anywhere, anytime.

Hardware Requirements
WinDOM for PC supports all x86 architecture hardware. The minimum memory
requirement for WinDOM to operate properly is 64MB. Basically, WinDOM requires VGA,
LAN, and sound cards to be compatible for it to function properly. Please refer to WinDOM
Hardware compatibility list for details on which hardware Windom supports.

Licenses Notice
WinDOM for PC allows instant connection to Window 2000 Terminal service, Windows
2000 server and Windows 2003 server using Remote Desktop Protocol service. Some
software is licensed for use on a single computer while other software may be licensed for
single or multiple users. It is the responsibility of the WinDOM purchaser/user to read and
comply with the licensing agreements of any software that may be used on the RDP
devices.

Terminal Service Client license may be required for each RDP device connected to
Window 2000 Terminal server, Window 2000 Server or Windows 2003 Server.

A separate Windows XP license may be required for each RDP device connected to the
host computer running Windows XP. It is the responsibility of the WinDOM purchaser/user
to read and comply with the Windows XP licensing agreement or contact Microsoft for
clarification regarding this licensing requirement.

1. WinDOM for PC Installation Guide


1.1 Installing Windom
Installation is simple. By following these simple steps, WinDOM for PC should take less than 20
minutes to set up. Please read each step carefully in the following pages.

Step 1
Obtain WinDOM from its package.

Power off your PC and open your PC’s case cover where you want to install WinDOM.
Remove the IDE cables attached to your Hard disk, CD-Rom.

Step 2
Insert WinDOM into the primary IDE slot of your computer. Make sure it is fully inserted
and properly attached to the IDE slot. WinDOM is required to be configured as the Master
hard driver. Please adjust other hard drivers to slave mode.

Step 3
Then plug WinDOM’s power connector to the power supply of the computer.

Step 4
Re-attached your PC case cover and power on your PC to begin booting from WinDOM.
Enter the BIOS setup screen. The Primary IDE/Master Driver must be configured as
C/H/S mode (normal mode). LBA mode or Large mode is not acceptable to successfully
boot WinDOM . Please make sure the C/H/S mode is correctly setup up. The C/H/S of a
16 MB WinDOM is 489/2/32, 32 MB 489/4/32.

Step 5
Initial setup for first time installation of WinDOM is required. During the boot up process,
you will need to enter the setup program of WinDOM. Please wait until you see a
message “ Press ctrl-alt-del to configure hardware settings” appears on the upper left
corner of the boot-up screen to WinDOM setup program.

Step 6
Once enter WinDOM’s setup mode, the hardware configuration program will be ask to
activate WinDOM’s activation code, select your VGA, Network, Sound, mouse.

Step 7
After you have correctly set all your hardware devices in WinDOM, you are ready to
connect to your Window servers to run any window applications.

Congratulations! You have fully installed WinDOM.

1.2 Using the WinDOM Hardware Configuration


WinDOM Hardware configuration manager is used to set your hardware device in WinDOM. You
will need to assign the proper hardware devices in order for WinDOM to function properly with
your computer.

1.3 Activation
For activation code, you will need to acquire it from your closest dealer or where you have
purchase the product.

To activate the software, select the activation tab and key in the Activate Code into the entry box
as shown. The formal shipping has activated WinDOM by the manufacture, using the flash
internal serial number, so users could skip this step. But if you use the evaluation version which is
downloaded from our wet site, the network card’s MAC address is used as the serial number. To
activate your evaluation copy, please contact us via mailing to sales@windomchip.com.

Note: WinDOM will run as an evaluation copy if it is not activated. However, for evaluation
purpose, WinDOM will automatically shutdown after 10 minutes of usage. In normal, we won’t
allow you to activate the evaluation version. We are appreciated you to buy WinDOM if you feel
good after evaluation.

1.4 VGA Configuration


By Default, WinDOM will start with VESA standard graphic driver for the first time. It will
automatically detect your current VGA card chipset and show it as below. Simply select your
corresponding VGA card from the pull down menu and click on the “OK” button. WinDOM will
ask to be rebooted and load the VGA driver you have selected. If driver loaded successfully,
WinDOM should start its connection manager.

How to verify if the driver is successfully installed and set? Simply enter the hardware
configuration manager again during the boot up and check if VGA setup is set to the driver which
you have selected. If it shows the VGA card you have selected it means the WinDOM have
successfully loaded drivers of the VGA card. If it shows “VESA” as the chosen VGA it means it
has not successfully been loaded. Please use the VESA driver or contact us by
support@windomchip.com for the latest driver updates.

Note: In an event where after rebooting, WinDOM does not display correctly or the screen is
blank. Press “Ctrl-Alt-Del” twice to enter auto scan mode. In this mode, WinDOM will try to find a
suitable VGA driver for your VGA card. Sometimes this operation will also fail. You can press
“Ctrl-Alt-Del” 3 times while booting. WinDOM will enter the VESA mode ( 640x480x8 ), for safe
operation. Please configure your WinDOM’s VGA driver again by re-entering setup mode.

1.5 Network Card (LAN)


WinDOM automatically detects and shows your Network card on your PC as shown below.

Please select a driver for your network card. And simply click on “test” button to begin Network
card testing.

WinDOM will list the success message if your Network card driver is successfully loaded for your
network card, as shown below.

you can check if your network card is detected by looking at the MAC Address. If WinDOM
display your network card’s MAC address it means it has detected your Network card
successfully.

1.6 Sound Card (Audio)


WinDOM for PC automatically detects and shows your Sound/Audio card on your PC as shown
below.

Please select a sound driver for your sound card. And simply click on “test” button to begin sound
card testing. Please attach a speaker to your computer when doing the test. If WinDOM for PC
successfully loads the driver you should be able to hear a test sound from your speaker during
the test. In a case your sound card is not listed on the WinDOM for PC compatibility list, please
contact support@windomchip.com for the latest driver updates.

1.7 Mouse
WinDOM for PC automatically detects and loads your mouse device on your PC as shown below.

If for some reason, WinDOM for PC does not detect your mouse device correctly, you can
manually select it by enabling the “Manually select” Option as shown above.

Note: ImPS/2 means wheel mouse support. PS/2 Mouse might not work properly if in ImPS/2
mode. Please make sure you have the correct mouse type attached.

Congratulation! After setting all the setup in the hardware configuration manager, you are now
ready to reboot with your PC and start running WinDOM.

2. WinDOM Desktop Environment


The first thing to do is to get familiar with WinDOM desktop. There is a few things first you must
know to help get started once you boot up using WinDOM.

You screen should appear with WinDOM desktop after you have successfully boot up with
WinDOM.

2.1 Pre-Defined Hotkeys


Hotkeys are designed to let you easily access WinDOM Connection Manager and Terminal Client
Property Settings.

3. Terminal Client Property


Terminal Client property can be started by click on the start button located at the lower right
corner of WinDOM desktop and select Terminal Client Property as shown. You can also start it
using its corresponding F2 Hotkey.

3.1 About
You will find information and copyrights on WinDOM under this tab. You can visit our website at
www.windomchip.com for any further information or new version for updating as shown.

Also, all WinDOM unit can be reset to its original factory default settings simply by clicking on the
dialog box located at the bottom of the tab as shown. The unit will then be restarted and reset to
its original setting.

Important: All setting will be lost after you have restored WinDOM to its factory default setting.
Please make sure losing your setup is ok when using this function.

3.2 Display

You can setup your WinDOM PC’s display property under this tab. Your local display controls all
your display size and colors depth when connecting to a window server through RDP. It is
important that you setup your local display to support the colors depth and display you request
from the server.

Under display Tab you will find options for you to change your display resolution size and colors
depth. There is also compatibility test to make sure the setup you have chose is valid

WinDOM allows you to setup your display area from 640 x 480 up to 1600 x1200. Please note
that the capability of supporting different resolution mode and color depths depends on your VGA
hardware capability.

Simply click on the down arrow located on the dialog box to select your colors depth. WinDOM
allows you to set your desktop color from 8 bits- 256 colors up to 24 bits colors.

Once you have selected your chose of Display resolution size and Colors depth. We recommend
that you do a compatibility test before proceeding to the next step.

Mode test will pop up with a dialog box as shown below follow with an “X” logo.

The “X” logo will appear for several seconds, if your VGA card support the mode you have chose.
In the event where you did not see any “X” logo after you proceed with the test, there might be a
possibility that your VGA card does not support the mode you have chosen. Please do not click
on yes button if you do not see the X logo and return the display tab to chosen another VGA
configuration until you can successfully see the X logo.

Notes: If you say “yes” to the unsupported mode, you will get a blank screen when next booting
up. You would be forced to enter the VESA mode to correct this problem.

3.3 Interface
Under Interface tab, you will find setup settings for local language user interface, keyboard type
and local mouse configuration.

WinDOM supports many different user interface language. It depends on your WinDOM Version.
Please visit www.windomchip.com for a list of language support and WinDOM version.

Simply click on the down arrow on the dialog box to select your local user Interface language.
Once selected WinDOM user interface will switch to the selected language after a reboot.

Note: language support is based on your WinDOM version. For details please Visit
www.windomchip.com or consult your closest dealers.

Please also select the keyboard type you are using from the keyboard type dialog box
accordingly.

WinDOM supports various type of keyboard. Please make sure you select the correct keyboard
for all keys to work properly.

Mouse Configuration can also be setup under the interface tab.

Button Configuration can be set to be right-handed or left-handed as shown below. Pointer speed
determines the speed of the mouse cursor when moving across the desktop.

Press ok button to return the Interface tab after you have configured your mouse setup
accordingly.

3.4 Device
After you have correctly setup your display and interface, now you are ready to setup any
external peripheral devices you have attached with your WinDOM PC.

WinDOM PC supports your local floppy, CD-ROM or any USB storage device such as USB flash
key, USB CD-ROM or USB Floppy.

By enabling the option for floppy, CD-ROM and USB drive storage support. It enables your
WinDOM PC to use your PC to use such devices locally when connected to a remote Window
server.

Note: local storage mapping must be enabled under Window 2003 Server in order for this
function to work. Local storage mapping does not work under Window 2000/NT server.

For any RDP connection, you can find your own local device with your hostname listed in the
window file explorer. Microsoft Window 2003 server will automatically mapped your local drive to
a vacant drive letter.

WinDOM PC not only can mapped peripheral storage device but also printer via LPT or COM port.

Simply enable LPT1 support and select the Windows Printer driver accordingly based on your
server type. Your printer is automatically linked and created when RDP connection is made to
the Window server.

Note: Please make sure that Window printer name support is enabled in the Window 2000/2003
Terminal service.

Enable LPT1 support by clicking inside the option box. Then select the corresponding printer
driver by clicking on the “Add” button as shown above.

Select your printer model based on the manufacturer and printer device name.

In an event where your printer cannot be find under the printer driver name list. You can then
create a custom printer driver name by clicking on the “Custom” button located on the dialog box
shown above.

You will then be requested to enter your printer’s correct Windows Printer Name. Please note
that for each printer model name window has a unique and standardized Window Printer Name
for it to recognize which printer driver to load when it is called for.

So, please make sure you have type in the correct Windows Printer Name. If you do not know
what is your printer’s Windows Printer Name, you may find it under control of adding a new
printer of your windows system, or consult with Microsoft to find out what the name is for this
function to work properly.

Type in the corresponding window printer name of your printer model based on Microsoft naming
standard.

In addition to LPT port mapping, COM Port mapping support is also available in WinDOM.
Simply click on the “Setup” button next to the corresponding COM port and a pop-up dialog will
appeared as shown below. Please setup your COM port setting such as baud rate, flow control,
Data bit, parity check and stop bits accordingly.

This means that WinDOM allows COM port device to be directed from the Window 2003 Server
to the WinDOM PC’s COM port.

3.5 Network
WinDOM supports 3 type of network connection- DHCP, PPPoE and Static as shown below.
In order for WinDOM PC to connect to your Window server, a valid IP address is a must
requirement.

In any event of network change, you can simply click the “Refresh” button to update WinDOM
PC’s latest network status.

Note: For PPPoE connection, please make sure you type in the username and PPPoE password
Usually given by your ISP provider.

3.6 Management
Under the management tab, you will find that you will be able to set security for WinDOM PC.
This feature gives IT administrator another option for higher security on their WinDOM PC.

Once the security is enabled, all access to system settings, such as Terminal Client Property,
Hardware Configuration and Connection Manager’s Configuration, will require a password in
order to gain access. By default, WinDOM’s security password is set to “12345”.

When security check is enabled, password will be required to do any changes to WinDOM PC
setup. This prevents users from tampering the setup without authorization.

In addition, when security is enabled it will also disable the configuration tab in Connection
Manager. This will prevent user from tampering with the connection setup.

Configuration can also be enabled if needed under security mode. This option can be disabled
under the management tab.

Software management can also be found under this tab. You can find the information on what
package name and version date of your current WinDOM software. Different package will
determine what language support you have for your WinDOM.

WinDOM is also design with an update mechanism. In the event where new software update is
released, update can be done thru FTP or HTTP.

Simply click on the “Update” button and an update pop-up dialog will be shown as below.

Type in the path on your FTP/HTTP server where the new WinDOM update software can be
found and click on go to begin updating. The checkbox of the update while booting is set to
update system image while in next booting time if your system memory is not enough to update
under the graphic user interface.

3.7 Tools

Under tool tab you will find some useful tools to help you setup or debug your networking
environment.

Ether speed allows you to set your network to full/half duplex mode. By default, it is set to default
for optimize compatibility with your network environment. Please be careful in setting this
function as wrong setup might result in disconnect or poor network performance.

Note: It is known for some older Hub/Switch it requires network interface to be set to Half Duplex.
This all depend on your networking environment and networking devices.

WinDOM also includes a Ping utility. This tool is extremely helpful for IT administrator to isolate
networking problem. Simply type in the IP address that you want to ping and WinDOM will
display the ping result accordingly.

DNS/WINS setup can also be found under this tab. To setup WinDOM to recognized existing
DNS or WINS within your network. Simply type in the IP address of the server within the entry
box shown below.

Note: For WINS, currently WinDOM is a Linux based operating system at this moment there is no
local application that will use the service of WINS.

In addition, WinDOM has a build-in LPD service enabled by default included in its operating
system. This allows remote LPR printing directly to WinDOM from Window 2000/2003 or
Unix/Linux LPR service. By default, this feature is enabled and print queue name is set to LPT1.

3.8 Control

Under control tab, you will find miscellaneous applications and setup for WinDOM.

3.8.1 Volume Control

Volume control can be set under this tab. For local applications, sound can be set to low or high
using this utility.

3.8.2 Thinprint Client

Thinprint Client is a 3rd party software that is supported by WinDOM. If you have Thinprint server
on your network, WinDOM can be setup with Thinprint to work with your thinprint server.

3.8.3 VNC service

WinDOM also supports VNC remote setting. By enabling VNC, you can access WinDOM
desktop from any PC installed with VNCviewer or Internet explorer.

This extremely helpful for IT administrator where they can remotely configured WinDOM.

3.8.4 WinConnect License Unlock Wizard

WinConnect utility will unlock your RDP5.1 client license.

3.9 System
WinDOM system tab shows all your current WinDOM PC info under this tab. Info such as CPU
type, Flash size, MAC address, Memory usage are displayed within this page.

Also, you can set your WinDOM PC computer name under this tab. By default, it is set with the
name “WinDOM”.

4. Connection Manager
Connection manager is the utility where you create all your connections in WinDOM. You can
create multiple connections in connection manager and use whichever one you want at any time.
There are different types of connection you can create such as RDP, VNCviewer or XDMCP.

To begin creating your connection you need to click on the configuration tab. Here you will find
the button to add, edit, and delete connections.

Under the terminal tab, you can switch between each connection. Each connection are running
under individual virtual terminal. By default, WinDOM deskop is running under virtual terminal
1(vt1) listed below. Or you can switch between each Virtual terminal using hot key.

For vt1, its hot-key is “Ctrl-Alt-F1 so, at any moment, you can switch back to WinDOM desktop
using this hot-key.

For each additional connection session, the hot-key will add on progressively. This means the
next session will be “Ctrl-Alt-F2 respectively and adds up.

Under the terminal tab, you can also end a virtual terminal simply be highlighting the session and
click on the “End” button.

4.1 Connecting to Window Server

In order to connect to your Window Server, you must have make sure your Window server is
enabled with Terminal service and Terminal service licensing.

First, you must create a RDP 5.0/5.1 connection by clicking the add button under the
configuration tab of the Connection manager as shown below.

After you have click on the “Add” button, you will be ask with a pop-up dialog to select your
connection type. Please select RDP5.0/5.1 to connect to a Window Server.

The difference between RDP 5.0 client and RDP 5.1 will be support for sound, color and local
storage.

Select the RDP connection and a dialog box will pop-up as shown below.

4.1.1 General Setting

Entry Item Description


Name Please enter a connection name for the RDP connection under the name
entry box. Example: “Server1”.
Computer Type in the IP address of the window server in the computer entry box it
could be IP address or DNS name. You can also use the browse button to
have WinDOM automatically locate your Window Terminal Server within a
network.
Username You can type in your username here. This will eliminate keying username
again during Window login.
Password You can type in your user password here. This will eliminate keying
password during Window login.
Domain You can type in your network domain name here.

4.1.2 Keyboard Setting

Once this is done you can proceed to the keyboard tab to select the appropriate keyboard for
your connection.

4.1.3 Sound Setting


Select sound enabled if you are using RDP 5.1 and connecting to a Window 2003 Server.
By default, this tab is disabled for RDP 5.0 setting.

4.1.3 Local Resource Setting


Local storage is only supported when using RDP 5.2 and connecting to a Window 2003 Server
such as CD-ROM, Floppy and USB storage device.

By default, it is disable when setting up a RDP 5.0 connection.

To setup this support, you must enable Storage support under the device tab in the Terminal
property shown below.

Once this is enabled. RDP 5.1 connection will be able to select local storage support when
connecting to Window 2003 server.

For local printer thru LPT or COM port, you must also enable it in the Terminal client property
shown above for RDP connection to select it.

Enable each setting accordingly for your WinDOM to use local peripheral devices.

4.1.4 Program Setting


After you have specified your Window server and local device support. Each connection can also
be defined to run a specific application from the server when connected.

This is especially helpful for POS or dedicated station where specific application is only needed to
launch when the unit is turned on.

By default, this feature is disabled during RDP setting.

4.1.5 Experience Setting

Depending on your network speed you can disable menu and window animation to enhance the
remote desktop refresh rate.

By default, all options are enabled for best remote desktop experience.

Click “OK” to finish the RDP creation process. Now you are ready to connect to Window Server.
Simply highlight the connection from the connection name list and click on “Connect” button.

4.2 Connecting to Unix/Solaris/Linux Server


WinDOM is build in with XDMCP client. This means any WinDOM PC can connect to any Unix-
based server using XDMCP or X11 protocol.

Note: You must have a proper Linux/Unix server with XDM server running in order for WinDOM
PC to successfully connect to it.

The process of creating a XDMCP connection is the same as RDP. Simply click on the add
button located under the configuration tab and select XDMCP for the type of connection.

You will need to give a name to the connection you are creating in the entry shown below.

There are 3 type of XDM connection you can select- Broadcast, query or indirect, please make
sure your Unix/Linux server are setup to allow such type of connection.

An optional X-Font server is also available for your WinDOM PC to utilize fonts on a X font server
within the network during a XDMCP connection.

4.3 VNC Remote Management (VNC Viewer)


WinDOM is build in with VNC server and viewer. This means you can remotely control other
WinDOM PC using its build in VNC viewer.

In order to control other WinDOM PC or connect to other PC with VNC server you must create a
VNCviewer connection as shown below. The procedure is the same as creating a RDP or
XDMCP connection. Simply click the “Add” button under the configuration tab located on the
connection manager.

Select VNC viewer as the connection type as shown below.

Type in the connection name in the entry box and the IP address of the VNC server unit
For example: 192.168.1.1:8

Please make sure you type in the display number of the VNC you are connecting to. By default,
WinDOM VNC display is set to 8. If you are connecting to VNC server other than WinDOM, you
might have to find out the display number first before connecting. If display number isn’t specified,
it will default to 0.

Example of VNCviewer connecting to a WinDOM PC, you can remote control all setup of
WinDOM PC.

Please remember to enable VNC service in WinDOM under Terminal client property in the
Control tab in order for VNCviewer to access your WinDOM PC. By default, the password for
VNC service is set to “12345” in WinDOM.

Remote management can also be done through a regular internet browser such as Internet
Explorer. Simply type: http:// IP address of WinDOM and you can do a remote setup as same as
a VNCviewer.

This function is extremely helpful for IT administrator to remotely maintain and setup your
WinDOM PC.

Appendix: Setting up your local printer


WinDOM PC allows you to attach a local printer to its LPT or COM port. There are 2 methods to
print from Window Server/Unix Server to your WinDOM PC’s local printer.

Printing from Window/Unix Server using RDP


For RDP 5.0/5.1 client, you can directly map your local printer to Window 2000 or 2003 server
through the RDP protocol. This means all printing data are transfer using the RDP protocol.

Note: To use this feature you must enabled Window Printer Name printing in your Window
Terminal server.

Simply enable the LPT1 support under the device tab in terminal client property in WinDOM as
shown below.

Click on the “Add” button to select the printer model attached to the WinDOM PC.

The name listed here are under the specification of Window printer naming standard. This means
the printer driver will be loaded based on the window printer naming given to server when
connecting. Once you have finish selecting the appropriate printer model. You are ready to
connect to the server using RDP 5.0/5.1 client software. Remember to enable local printer in
RDP 5.0/5.1 connection for the server to automatically create the printer for you.

Lastly, when connected to the Window 2000/2003 server you should be able to find your mapped
printer under the printer menu. Now, you are ready to print from the server to your local printer

Note: The client’s printer mapped to the server is only viewed by the user, other user can not view
and use the printer. After the user disconnects from the server, the printer is also disappear.

Printing from Window/Unix Server using LPR


Another method of printing to WinDOM PC’s attached printer is through LPR. By default,
WinDOM is enabled with LPD service with a default print queue name LPT1 shown below

From Window 2000/2003 server you can create a Standard TCP/IP printer using LPR to print
directly to WinDOM PC’s LPD service given WinDOM PC’s IP address and print queue name.
You will be request to install the printer driver on the Window Server during the creation of the
printer.

From Unix Server, you can directly print using the LPR command in Unix directly to WinDOM PC
given the IP address and print queue name.

Note : The printer created by this method can be viewed by all users, and no matter the user on
the client logins or not, all the other people can print data to this client’s computer.
