UV Bead Lab by Emma B, Clayton C, Aaron G, and Ashley S

Problem/Background :
Sunscreen is highly genotoxic but does not penetrate the body any deeper than the skin.
Organisms that are regularly exposed to sunlight, their skin is extremely well adapted to
continuous UV stress. The human skin can still get sunburns and cataracts in your eyes. Some
beneficial things from uv are getting vitamins such as vitamin D. t is also used for photography,
testing chemicals, lights and pest control. UV rays can be harmful but it can also help us in
many ways.
Question:
Do the different sunscreen brands affect how much UV Rays get to the beads.
Hypothesis:
think that Blue Lizard Sunscreen will protect the beads the most, from UV Rays.
Materials:
Banana Boat Ultra Defense SPF 30, Max Block Sunscreen SPF 30, Blue Lizard SPF 30, Purple
Beads, Bead Tin and Top, Sunlight.
Procedures:
1) Set up a control group of beads with no sunscreen and see how long it take for those beads
to get to their maximum color.
2) Put purple beads in bead tin.
3) Add a medium layer of sunscreen at the top of the bead tin top.
4) Put the top on the tin and go outside.
5) Stay outside for 30 seconds.
6) Go back inside and see how dark the purple beads got by comparing to the bead color chart.
7) Repeat steps 1 - 6 for every different type of sunscreen.

Analysis and Conclusion -
UV Rays are around us every day, and can be harmful but also beneficial. n this lab, color
changing beads acting as are skin to test different questions about how UV Rays can be
prevented. Do the different sunscreen brands affect how much UV Rays get to the beads? We
thought the Blue Lizard Sunscreen would protect the beads from UV Rays the most. Our data
from this lab showed that Blue Lizard Sunscreen affected the bead's color change moderately.
We knew this because the beads in the Blue Lizard container reached level 3 out of 6 (0 being
white, and 6 being as dark as possible). This was not very impressive compared to other
sunscreens that protected much better. Our data did not support our hypothesis because it was
clear the Blue Lizard Sunscreen did not protect from UV Rays the best. We found that Banana
Boat Ultra Defense sunscreen did protect against Rays the best. On Drugstore.com's Banana
Boat Ultra Defense review, we saw that all customers who wrote a review said that this
sunscreen had effective protection which supports our data. The limitations in this lab that we
struggled with was noting the bead color quickly and efficiently, and getting into the classroom
fast enough to see the bead color without the sun above us. We had to redo this lab four times to
make our data as close as possible to accurate. The amount of time we had to do the lab was
also limiting because in real life you aren't going to be out in the sun for forty seconds and then
go back inside. We would recommend using Banana Boat Ultra Defense Sunscreen over the
other brands that we tested the next time you are going to be in the sun because it protects from
UV Rays really well. This lab was very interesting, informed us all about what precautions we
should take to protect ourselves from UV rays and also taught us how to make our own labs just
like real scientists.
