GENERATIONSOFWEALTHANDPOVERTY Theideathatinthelongrunwealthwilldistributeitselfamongthepopulationwithout governmentinterventioniswishfulthinking.Itiscute.therealityisthatwealthwillcontinue toaccumulateatanexponentialrateamongthewealthyfamilieswitheachsucceeding generation,leavingthoseunfortunatesoulswhodonothavethesamebloodlineatstarvation levelpoverty.CompoundthiswiththeinsistenceoftheCatholicChurchandotherreligious groupshereoftheneedtocreatemorechildren,andyougetanexplosivesituation.Poverty getspasseddownfromtheparentstothechildren,unlessofcoursetheyimprovetheirsocio economicsituationthroughtheirowneffortsorwiththehelpofthegovernmentandnon governmentorganizations,eventhatoftherulingeliteclassfamiliesthemselves. CONTROLOFRESOURCES Rationalcontrolofresources.Rationalcontrolofthepopulation.Thesearewhat'smissingin thiscountry.Therearegroupsouttherethatpromotethese,buttheyareoftennotthat

influentialinpolicymaking.Tobespecific:thepresentissueofReproductiveHealthBillwith itsattendantmisunderstandingoftheconceptsinvolvedaswellasthevilificationofthosewho promoteitas'antilife.'AstheAmericancomedianGeorgeCarlinoncesaid:"iftheyaretruly prolife,theyshouldbeprotestingagainstdeathitself,"orsomethingsimilartothat.My memory'snotthatgood.ThepointhereisthatRationalcontrolofthepopulationisacorollary tocontrollingthepeople'scollectivedestiny,notjustthatofafewrichandinfluentialand powerfulfamilies. THEIDEAOFAPUBLICANDNATIONALIDENTITY ApartoftheproblemIthinkisthattheideaofa'public'isnotasdevelopedherecompared withothercountries,likeinEuropeorScandinaviaforexample.Anotheristhattheold communalmindsetofpropertyownershiphasbeenlargelyforgottenandsupersededbythe capitalistideaofprivateownershipofnature,whichissomethingIthinkthatisalientothe indigenouspeoplesthatnowarecalled'Filipinos.' AnotherproblemistheeverknottyquestionofFilipinoidentity.Forthesakeofanyone's sanity,Iwillnotdiscussthathere.WhatIwillsaythoughisthatnationalismisacomplicated issue,andunlessitispromotedwholeheartedlyandrationally,involvingallthepeopleswithin thenationalgeographicterritory,itwillnotwork.Iamthinkingalongthelinesofmandatory militaryserviceregardlessofone'seconomicandsocialbackground,withoutconsideringone's religionandlanguagecommunityoforigin.Compulsorymilitaryserviceforbothmaleand femaleswouldbreedasenseofnationalownershiptotheyounggeneration.Itnurturesthe senseofacollective'we'whichIstronglyargueisnotpresenthereyet.

INCONCLUSION Asitisnow,therearealotofsourcesofdivisionsreligious,socioeconomic,political, ideological,linguistic,ethnic,racial,anddistancebothphysical(thatofOFWsandtheir families)andmental(thatoftheprogressivesandthe'regressives').Unlessthesesourcesof

divisionsbeaddressedfirstandthensolved,allthesecenturieslongproblemswillcontinueon untiltheworldimplodesonitselfandbecomescosmicdustoncemore.
