You've probably got hundreds of recipes in your collection but maybe not all of them are as healthy as you'd like. A shame since theres a good chance that those recipes are amongst your favorites, especially old family recipes that have been passed down through the generations. So how do you go about changing your favorite recipes into ones that are healthier for you and your family? Some simple substitutions to reduce fat: 2 egg whites or cup egg beaters for each egg. Same amount of apple sauce or prune puree for butter or oil. Add fruit instead of sugar, or add natural zero calorie sugars (stevia, truvia, etc.) Low fat or fat free dairy product milk, cheese, cream cheese, healthier butters, yogurt, etc. 1 cup heavy cream can be replaces with 1/3 cup oil or margarine with 3/4 cup skim milk. Try using the salt called for. Or you can bulk up your recipes to make them healthier: Add Flax seed, nuts (almonds & walnuts are best), wheat germ, chia seeds, etc. for good omega fats. Replace some or all white flour with whole wheat and/ or oats. Use honey or agave nectar instead of regular sugar. Replace sugar with fruit. Most recipes taste the same, slightly different or even better with these alterations. Just be sure to taste test your result before serving them, the more you play the better they will taste.
