Dayton 1 Three Sided Essay Claire Dayton Ms.

My project is about diet and oral health, and how diet affects oral health. The first viewpoint I'm exploring is that of orthodontists. Orthodontists are very concerned about diet and oral health. As anyone who has had braces will know, a person who currently has braces has to adhere to a different diet than one who does not have braces. A person with braces needs to avoid hard foods like hard candy and crisp vegetables and fruit (Lee, 52). Along with hard foods, sticky and chewy foods like taffy and caramel (Lee, 52). Orthodontists have hypothesized that eating chewy and tough foods like meat resulted in early man having an improper bite (Asbell). Some disagree with this claim. However, there have been reports of no correlation with toughness of food and occurrence of improper bites (Rios-Vera, SnchezAyala et al). Many orthodontists see orthodontics as a necessary part of life that has been around for a while, meaning people have always had improper bites that needed fixing (Asbell). Orthodontists may have a bit of an ulterior motive. Orthodontists are still working in a bussiness, and if no one need braces, they would not have revenue. There are cases were braces are necessary, but it could be that needing braces is being over diagnosed. The next viewpoint I am exploring is that of a certain group of people who think that tough food decreases the change of an improper bite forming. There is a small but vocal group of academics and other persons interested in this subject. Many believe that a soft-food, non-traditional diet is to blame for why improper bites are so prevalent in our society (Guyenet). By eating more traditional foods, such as tough meats, improper are less likely to occur. The group of non-academics associated with this also pushes a certain diet called the

Dayton 2 Paleolithic Diet. This is a diet that consists of eating like earl man, things like meats, nuts, certain vegetables and fruits, and certain oils. I think that there might be some cognitive bias within these groups, and I am a little hesitant to believe them. However the academic evidence is strong, and I will continue to research this throughout my project, The third viewpoint I am exploring is that of average person, and what the average person thinks about diet and oral health. I think the average person knows some basic facts. Many people know that plaque causes tooth decay (Tooth plaque information). Plaque can cause tooth decay along with tartar build up and gingivitis (Tooth plaque information). These symptoms and conditions are indicative of an unhealthy mouth. I don't the average consumer thinks about food toughness when buying groceries or when eating. Many modern foods are soft and filled with sugar. These are very prevalent in many households. Because meats and vegetables are more expensive, they are eaten less by less-fortunate people. Along with the fact that those less-fortunate often cannot afford braces, it seems like there may be a prevalence of improper bites that cannot be fixed. This is something I will look into as continue to research.
