Introduction
Chapter 2 Introduction
Data Unit CU 24020 is intended for creating asynchronous and synchronous V.24/V.28 interface data connections into the 2 Mbit/s frame structure of the main unit of the equipment (DB 2, DM 2 or DN 2). Figure 1 shows an application example, where Data Unit CU 24020 has been configured as a part of DM 2, DB 2 and DN 2.

In synchronous transmission, the range of available data rates is 600 bit/s...64 kbit/s. In asynchronous transmission, rates up to 19.2 kbit/s are available. The adaptation of data interface into the 2 Mbit/s frame structure has been implemented in accordance with ITU-T Recommendation V.110. The V.110-compliant frame structure has been implemented separately for each interface. Depending on the data rate, the interfaces each get 1, 2, 4, or 8 bits of the 8-bit time slot. The interface-specific framing of the data interfaces enables various branching and through-connection functions on the sub-time slot level. The transmission capacity is therefore effectively utilized when several slow data interfaces with different routes are required. Note Software version CS 24064.01 01A is made for special purposes, and does not fully comply with the V.110 and V.24 Recommendations (see usage of V.24 circuit 111 and V.110 X-bit for flow control in chapter 3).

In the synchronous operating mode, there are two timing principles available: contra-directional and co-directional timing. In the contra-directional timing, the Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment (DCE), in this case the data unit, generates both timing circuit 114 and circuit 115 for the DTE (Figure 4). The timing circuits are generated in the data unit from the network 2048 MHz clock.

Timing circuit 113 can be used for transmission, provided that the circuit is synchronized to timing circuit 115. In this case, timing circuit 115 is looped back at the DTE as timing circuit 113 (Figure 5). This timing principle is known as codirectional timing.

The structure of the V.110 frame for rates up to 19.2 kbit/s is shown in Figure 8. When rates 600, 1200 or 2400 bit/s are used, each of the data bits is repeated 8, 4 or 2 times, respectively (see also Table 4). For example, with data rate 600 bit/s, the first data bit is located in bit positions D1D8, the next data bit in bit positions D9D16 etc. For rates 4800...19200 bit/s, 48 actual data bits are obtained in a frame, which gives a 60-percent efficiency for the transmission capacity.

S8 (known as SA bits) of the frame. In the receive direction, the bits are received as circuit 107. Correspondingly, circuit 105 is transmitted in bits S4 and S9 (known as SB bits) of the frame; in the receive direction, the bits are received as circuit 109. The X-bits of the frame are used to transmit flow-control information: circuit 111 is transmitted in an X-bit; in the receive direction, this bit is seen as circuit 106. Note The use of the X-bit and circuit 111 together does not comply with ITU-T recommendations V.110 and V.24.
Bits E1, E2 and E3 are used to transmit information of the user rate; i.e. they indicate whether the data bits in the V.110 frame are repeated (rates 600, 1200 and 2400 bit/s). Bits E4, E5 and E6 are used to transmit phase information on the network-independent timing. Since the data unit does not support network-independent timing, these bits are not in use. Bit E7 is not used either. The function of bit E7 is to transmit the synchronization information on the 4 x 80-bit multiframe with a 600 bit/s rate.

Table 4
The data unit matches the intermediate rate into a time slot in the 2 Mbit/s frame structure and allocates 1, 2 or 4 bits, depending on the user rate. This adaptation corresponds to the third phase adaptation to the 64 kbit/s B-channel (according to the V.110 Recommendation). The time slot and the time slot bits are freely selectable for each interface. Even the transmit and receive direction bits can be selected irrespective of each other. Several interfaces can be multiplexed into one time slot (conforming to Recommendation I.460, flexible multiplexing). The frame synchronization is considered accomplished when two error-free V.110 frames have been received in succession (no errors in the fixed 17-bit frame synchronization pattern). The frame synchronization is lost when three erroneous frames are received in succession, each frame containing at least one bit error in the fixed 17-bit frame synchronization pattern.

OFF, but circuits 107 and 109 remain in, or are controlled into ON state. If synchronization is not achieved within three seconds, the interface enters the Disconnect State (DS). A change from the DTS state into the DS state also occurs when DTE circuit 108 has been defined to be used and is switched into OFF state. In the DS state, the D-bits of the outgoing frame have been set to binary 0 state and the S-bits have been set to OFF state to indicate a request to interrupt. When the 12-ms time-out has elapsed, the interface enters the IS state. Transmission of the frame is then terminated; that is, the continuous binary 1 state is transmitted. The same procedure is performed when synchronization is lost. The IS state can always be entered by deactivating the interface.

Caution Use wrist grounding or other such protection when handling a plug-in unit removed from its package.
The data units are ready to operate as soon as they have been installed in a cartridge and the signal cables have been connected. Note that one data unit reserves space for 13 alarms in the fault supervision table of the main unit. This may, in certain cases, affect the maximum size of the equipment configuration. The pin numbering of the data unit interfaces is shown in Figure 3. The interfaces can be cabled either by connector, in which case you should use a full-size Euroconnector, or by interface, in which case you should use a quartersize (3 x 7-pin) Euroconnector; see Figures 4 and 5. When data rates over 19.2 kbit/s are used, the cable should be Nokia type MMHS 8x2x0.4+0.4 or corresponding and less than 2 meters long to guarantee error-free data transmission. Under favourable circumstances the length of the cable can be increased up to 4 meters.

Cabling Examples
The data interfaces can be cabled with either quarter-size or full-size Euroconnectors. It is essential that you know the application for which the data interfaces are used, because in many cases only a few of the V.24 circuits are needed. Figures 6 11 give cabling examples for the most common situations:
D D D
Complete cabling, which covers asynchronous and synchronous transmission with all control circuits connected. Cabling for asynchronous transmission with all V.110 control circuits connected. Cabling for asynchronous transmission with only data circuits connected. In the examples, the direction is indicated with respect to the unit.
Note
Complete cabling with all control and clock circuits connected is shown in Figures 6 and 7. The following circuits are needed:

Maintenance
Chapter 4 Maintenance
The data unit does not require any scheduled maintenance. Servicing is required only when faults are indicated by alarms. The self-tests performed by the unit itself are useful for further location of any faults that may occur.
4.1
Tests
The data unit can perform the following self-tests:
D
Channel tests Test the operation of each interface of the unit with all operation modes and transmission rates. A/D test Tests the A/D converter of the unit. Memory tests Test the memory operations of the RAM, EPROM and EEPROM of the unit.
D D
The data unit is equipped with an interface-specific test transmitter/receiver, which, along with the unit loopbacks, can be used to test the connection without having to use any separate measuring instruments.
4.2
Statistics
The data unit gathers information for the following statistics:
D D
CPU reset Counts the CPU resets. Loss of V.110 frame alignment Detects V.110 frame alignment losses.

4.3
Alarms
When the red service LED is on, there is usually a serious fault in the unit and it will have to be replaced with a new one. In the data unit, the red service LED is used also to indicate bit errors on the transmission path when the unit is in test mode. The yellow service LED indicates that the unit is in test mode, that a loopback has been set, that an interface is queuing for activation, that the incoming line signal is missing, or that the frame synchronization has been lost. The fault is thus not necessarily in the unit that indicates the alarm. The green service LED is on when the unit is accessed by the Service Terminal.

Chapter 3 How to Control and Access the Unit with Service Terminal
This chapter explains briefly the principle for controlling the unit with a Service Terminal. A more detailed description on the use of the Service Terminal is described in the Operating Manual for Service Terminal TC 21700. With the Service Terminal, you can assign the basic settings to the unit and store them into a nonvolatile storage. You can also take maintenance-related measures, e.g. set loopbacks, and read e.g. identifications or statistics from the unit.
Control Principle
The equipment is controlled by choosing options on menus. You can also bypass intermediate menu levels by keying in several selections as one string, if you know the entire command string (e.g. 5,9,3,2,3 to loop back the outgoing 2048 kbit/s signal of the 2M interface of the data unit; in this example we assume that the unit was installed in unit location 3). Within command strings, commas are used as command parameter delimiters, and the command is executed with the RET key. The Service Terminal keypad is shown in Figure 1.

The fault display indicates the fault situation of the equipment. The display shows:
In the event of a fault, Local alarm cancel cancels the rack alarms A and B. As a reminder of cancellation, the equipment provides a D-alarm. Cancelling an alarm without a fault situation also produces a B-alarm. The Local alarm cancel concerns the entire equipment.

Identifications
Under this item, you can read unit identification data, such as unit identification and the type and version of the program used. Some of the identifications can also be modified.
Controls (temporary)
Under this item, you can assign controls (e.g. interface loopbacks) that temporarily change the operating mode of the unit. The controls are lost e.g. in connection with reset.
Settings (permanent)
Settings determine the operating mode of the unit. The settings are permanent and are therefore retained in the equipment memory even in the event of a power failure. The special settings for GSM purposes are not, however, permanent.
Measurements
Under this item, you can start voltage measurements made by the unit itself (without external measuring instruments).

10 User Privileges
This item covers the protective facilities of the equipment. Some of the unit functions (e.g. Settings) can be protected by setting a password, which must be known if the protected functions are to be modified. The user privileges concern the entire equipment.
11 Miscellaneous
This item covers the functions not included in the other categories (not yet in use).

Fault Display
The main unit collects fault data from the other units into a common fault storage. At initialization, the main unit collects from each unit the following data: the faults in the unit, their effect on the alarm outputs, the fault code related to each fault, how the fault is indicated (colour of indicator), and name of the supervision block. The main unit generates the response shown in the fault display; the response contains the following information:
D D D
Equipment ID (equipment name) Fault status Fault data: S Fault object S Fault type (fault code)
Example:
*DM ABC (AS) DM2/1 (unit 1) frame alignment lost DIU 19S (unit 3) synchronizing fault
In the above example, the equipment, named DM 2 ABC, has alarms A and S. The fault indications are received from the supervision block of equipment interface 1 (unit 1), where the fault is loss of frame alignment, and from the supervision block of the data unit (unit 3), where the fault is loss of V.110 frame synchronization.

NTC C33374002SE_00
Selection 0 displays the state of the interface. Selection 1 sets the interface to normal state. Selection 2 connects the signals received from the interface back to the output of the same interface (loop L1). The loopback is selectable only for channels that are in use; the time slots and bit masks must be the same in the receive and transmit directions. When this option is selected, the program generates a fault message concerning the loopback. Selection 3 connects the signals received from the 2 Mbit/s frame back to the frame (loop L2). A fault message concerning the loopback is given. The L2 loop cannot be set on when the data rate is 64 kbit/s.
Selection 0 displays the test data pattern currently in use. Selections 1 and 2 control the transmitted data into a selected state. Selection 3 sets the transmitted data as alternating zeros and ones, whereas selection 4 sets it to comply with test pattern PR511.

Note that circuit 115 is looped back as circuit 113 at the far-end modem or terminal. The use of network-independent clock is not supported. (Use of circuit 113 is available from hardware version CU 24020 02A on). Selection 0 displays the Tx timing circuit. Selection 1 sets circuit 114 for Tx timing. Selection 2 sets circuit 113 for Tx timing. This selection is not available when the data bit rate 64 kbit/s is used. Selection 3 sets circuit 115 for Tx timing. This selection is not available when the data bit rate 64 kbit/s is used.
Selection 0 displays the transfer mode currently in use. Selection 1 sets the transfer mode as duplex pointtopoint. Note Even if simplex and point-to-multipoint operation modes can be selected, these are not supported.

Selection 0 displays the data bit rate. By selections 1 6 the data bit rate selected is adapted to the transmission channel as specified in ITU-T Recommendation V.110. When you want to transmit asynchronous data using a bit rate lower than 600 bit/s, set the operating mode to synchronous transfer with 4800 bit/s data bit rate. The transmission is then performed on sampling principle.
Selection 0 displays the selected character length. Selections 1 4 set the character length to 811 bits, respectively.

NTC C33374002SE_00
Selection of transfer mode is done in the same way in the asynchronous mode and in the synchronous mode.
Selection 0 displays the time slots used by the channel. Selection 1 sets the same time slot for the transmit and receive direction. Selection 2 sets the time slot for the transmit direction only. Selection 3 sets the time slot for the receive direction only. After the time slot selection, a bit mask is required for the time slot selected.
Bit mask: give bit mask B1...8
You can write 1, 2, 4, or 8 ones (1) in the bit mask, depending on the transfer capacity required by the channel. An example: B1...B8 10000000.

Selection 2 tests the channel selected at all transmission rates and operating modes. The response obtained should be channel ok. In the event of a fault, the response is channel failed. Selection 3 deactivates all channels. Selection 4 tests the A/D converter. The memory tests (selection 5) are used to locate a possible fault in the RAM, EPROM (or EEPROM). The EEPROM test takes about 10 minutes; during this time the unit cannot receive any commands. Memory operations (selection 6) allow you to read from and save to a specified memory location. The program displays a menu where you can choose from four memory operations:
Memory operations: 1 Read byte 2 Write byte in ram 3 Read 8 bytes 4 Write byte in eeprom
After selections 1, 2 and 3 (9,9,u,6,1 or 2 or 3) the program will prompt you to choose the memory address:
Give memory address: 0...65535

If you chose the write option (selection 9,9,u,6,2 ), the program will prompt you to enter the byte value:
Give byte value: 0...255
After selection 4 (9,9,u,6,4) the program will prompt you to enter the EEPROM offset:
Give eeprom offset: 0...511
The program will then prompt you to enter the byte value:
Give byte value: 0...255
Selection 7 (9,9,u,7) displays the fault detected in the course of a diagnostic test.
