Watch out for this Jumping Jack

Pooja SuNdar
hat is the one sport that almost all of us watch at the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games, making ourselves experts, critiquing and applauding, as we envy the grace of the athletes? The gymnastics. Whether it is artistic or rhythmic, we are captivated by the way the artistes flip, leap and bend; doing it all with grace and in time to music. It was this sport, art, which Sonia Singh introduced to her daughter Saasha at the age of four. The bubbly Saasha, now 14, is to represent New Zealand in artistic gymnastics, along with 9 others, at the Aloha Gymfest in Hawaii this coming January. This international competition has been held for the past 36 years inviting athletes from the United States, Japan, Canada, Australia and of course, New Zealand. Saasha will be the first Punjabi athlete from New Zealand to represent New Zealand at this event. When asked about her goals for Gymfest, she laughingly said that her priority was to place first and if not that, definitely second and third! The 14-year-old started off dabbling in the rhythmic style of the sport early on in her training before being handpicked to join the artistic squad. Saasha has been competiting on the national scale since the age of nine, which is the youngest age at which one can participate. In 2010, she earned the National Gymnastic Championship and hasnt looked back since. It was only when asked about the challenges she faced in achieving pursuing her love for the sport did I discover that she was born and brought up in Christchurch. Following the earthquake early last year, the family moved to Auckland throwing

Saasha into a completely unfamiliar world; a new gym, new team and a new coach. Anyone else may have let this move and change distract them, and have slacked on training and competing, losing interest. This vivacious girl however, worked even harder to make sure she did not fall behind! What is it about this sport that kept her attracted her and kept her interest so long? It is the uniquely risky and glamorous nature of the activity she says; mastering a technique and improving her rare skillset. When asked about her favourite move, she is silent for about a minute before resolutely deciding

Saasha Singh in action and (above) the young gymnast with the other winners at one of the National Gymnastic Championships

that there are way too many to choose from. Her likes and interests, however, reach beyond the simple sporting aspect as Saasha explains that she loves meeting so many people and making new friends with similar interests. These interests however, are not just limited to gymnastics. In addition to playing other sports such as football, touch rugby and running cross country, she mentions that she also enjoys sewing and arts and crafts. This taste in fashion must definitely come in handy in picking out her performance outfits! Her favourite outfit she muses is definitely her nationals costume, which is blue with stripes and many, many glittery sparkles. So what is in store for Saashas future? Her mother Sonia says they are contemplating moving abroad to maybe the United States or the United Kingdom to broaden her daughters horizons and opportunities in terms of artistic gymnastics; the sport not being popular in New Zealand. She hopes that with Saashas love for the sport she will be able to earn a scholarship that allows her to train with the very best. Im sure Saashas appreciation of school subjects such as mathematics, science and social studies will definitely help her on this path. Her long term goals also extend in terms of her academics in that she hopes to, after competing (and placing) at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, of course, become a neurosurgeon. Not an easy feat by any means but this self-assured, cheerful young woman I am sure will not rest until she gets there. She will surely be gracing our television screens, in blue stripey sparkles, at the Rio Olympics.

Sydney-India flights likely soon

arWa jaNjaLI
ravel to India could soon become easier for New Zealanders if initiatives by the Indian High Commissioner to NZ are successful. High Commissioner Avanindra Kumar Pandey, in a recent interview with the Indian Weekender, said they were looking at persuading Air India to begin Sydney-India services. We are trying to persuade Indian Airlines (Air India) to come to Sydney, if not New Zealand, Mr Pandey said. The move could cut travel times and ease travel hassles for thousands from New Zealand, who, at the moment, have to travel Malaysian Airlines, Thai Air, or Singapore Airlines in a long-haul 21-23 hour flight to either Delhi or Mumbai. Since there is not much traffic between India and New Zealand, it is not practical to have a direct flight from here but if there is a direct flight from Sydney to Mumbai or Delhi, it will be easier for people. Direct flights from Sydney to India were this week welcomed by a local travel agent who said the arrangement would cut travel times by half. He said the initiative by Mr Pandey was worthy and would stand to benefit the region as a whole. Mr Pandey also said closer ties between the two countries was on the agenda of his term in office. We are also trying to improve relations between India and New Zealand. As you know, there have been a number of Ministry visits from New Zealand to India this year visits almost every month, Mr Pandey said. So that has been the result of our effort to

improve the dialogue between the two countries because if the dialogue improves and the relations warm up further, it will help the Indian community, he said. We are also looking at creating city-tocity links by trying to forge a sister city relationship between Wellington and Delhi. This is just an idea though and I dont know how feasible it is. But if it is feasible, we will push it further. Among discussing the various issues that needed immediate attention, Mr Pandey said he would take the necessary steps to resume

talks of providing assistance to Indian businessmen here in order to help them give back to the home country, as initiated by the former High Commissioner, Retired Admiral Suresh Mehta. Improving our visa and counsellor services is on the agenda as of now although broadly we have received no complaints. We are trying to improve the contact and interface with the Indian community so that in times of emergency or urgent need, visa and counsellor services can be quickly sought out. During the tenure of Admiral Mehta, there

were talks of assisting the Indian business community in New Zealand to create avenues for them to give back to the home country. A conference was organised to discuss the same and a few businessmen came forward with suggestions too, only that they required bureaucratic assistance from the Indian High Commission. I think its a very good idea and the people who thought of it were very far sighted people, Mr Pandey said. Through this initiative, the relations will only strengthen and the power and ability of the Indian private sector will grow too. Hence, it is good to establish contacts so that work can be conducted in accordance with mutual needs. Thus, it will be my effort to see that this idea is built and developed further, he said. He said the Indian Embassy was not in a position to do much about the struggling job scenario for Indian immigrants in New Zealand. With respect to students too (NZ being the new hub of education now, attracting a huge number of students from India), there is a sheer lack of assistance in providing students with suitable jobs in order to help them fend for themselves during the study period, Mr Pandey said. We are not qualified to give guidance on student job search or jobs for immigrants. Only New Zealand authorities can as they know New Zealand better than we do. Having said that, we are working on a government to government level to improve the openings for Indians who wish to enter the jobs and services market in NZ.

Community leader awarded Angels among top state accolade us this Christmas
dEV NadKarNI
Eminent Auckland community leader Dr Lingappa Kalburgi, MNZM, JP has been conferred the prestigious Karnataka State Government Rajotsava Award 2012 for his services to the Kannada community outside India. He founded the popular Kannda Koota, an organisation representing people from the state of Karnataka living in New Zealand. He has been recognised for his contribution to Kannada culture, language and heritage promotion in New Zealand. The award, which is conferred on the occasion of the foundation day of the southern Indian state of Karnataka, was this year announced on November 1. It was conferred on 57 eminent persons this year, to mark the 57th anniversary of the states formation. Dr Kalburgi is currently Chairman, Business Committee of the New Zealand Indian Central Association and active Executive Committee member of the Auckland Indian Association as Chairman of the Business Committee and Tagore Library. He is also actively involved with Mt Roskill Business & CommuDr Kalburgi has a Masters degree in mathematics and a PhD in Library and Information Science besides several other qualifications in India and New Zealand. He is a Justice of the Peace for New Zealand since 2004 and has received the MNZM Queens Award for serving the Indian community in 2007. Indian Weekender congratulates Dr Kalburgi on his latest award. Throughout December the Auckland City Mission will see a sharp increase in the demand for its services. To help them support families in desperate need they are calling on Aucklanders to Become Someones Angel by donating to their Christmas Appeal. Each Christmas the Mission supports thousands of people who have no-one else to turn to. Throughout December it will provide 2000 emergency food parcels, distribute approximately 20,000 Christmas presents and host around 2500 people at New Zealands largest community Christmas Lunch. This work is only made possible thanks to the wonderful generosity of the Missions donors. Auckland City Missioner Diane Robertson says the Mission both gives and receives at Christmas time.It is such a privilege to see childrens faces light up when they receive a present, or the relief on parents faces when they receive a food parcel. It is also a privilege to experience the wonderful generosity of Aucklanders as they donate money, presents and time. We are extremely grateful. This Christmas the Mission is asking Aucklanders to support its Christmas appeal and Become Someones Angel. Angel wings will

be appearing all around the city, offering people a novel way by which they can support the appeal, while visitors to Silo Park will get the chance to add their own Christmas message to Auckland on a giant tree of Angel Wings. Public views sought on Waikumete Cemetery

$26,995
The Waikumete Cemetery is expected to reach burial capacity by around 2018. Hence, in order to discuss the cemeterys future growth and management, there was an open day organised on December 1, to let the public hear more about the issues and opportunities facing the cemetery, and be a part of the consultation process. This is required every 10 years as part of the review of the Reserve and Conservations Management Plan. According to Richard Mann, Community Facilities Manager at Auckland Council, Waikumete Cemetery is one of the largest cemeteries in the Southern Hemisphere. At its peak in the 60s and 70s, we believe every resident in Auckland had or knew somebody who was connected to the cemetery. It is an important facility for Aucklanders throughout the region and we want as many people as possible to have a say in its future management and development. Other questions that were raised during the open day included whether some areas of existing vegetation can be cleared to allow

New Zealand New Zealand

The hobbit takes centre stage

Pooja SuNdar
ince Prime Minister John Key signed the deal with Warner Brothers, The Hobbit has been receiving a great deal of attention, whether it be from animal activist groups, labour unions or avid fans counting down the days - any press is good press, right? Either way, Middle Earth, as Tolkien fans affectionately refer to New Zealand, has definitely caught the attention of the international arena. The three Hobbit films serve as a prequel to the enormously successful Lord of the Rings trilogy both sets of movies based on the fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. The final Lord of the Rings film, The Return of the King won 11 Academy Awards putting it on par with only two others in history, Ben-Hur and Titanic, bring the total wins for the trilogy to 17 - rather big win for us Kiwis. The Hobbit films are even bigger and better that the original trilogy with Weta Workshops and Sir Peter Jackson trying out new film and graphic techniques which are rumoured to be absolutely brilliant - so good in fact that it has already been nominated for an Academy Award in Visual Effects and the movie hasnt even been released. What, however, does all this mean - economically, socially? The SoCial ComPaNy New Zealand, as a small and rather neutral nation, is not always at the forefront of anything on the international playing field - we are generally known as the country with sheep. The Lord of the Rings and now, The Hobbit are giving the world and especially Hollywood a chance to shift its all seeing eye to the land of the Kiwis. The elaborate preparations and extravagant

markets than the Rugby World Cup - building the hype for the next two years. The films also affect Asian and American markets hopefully bringing in both tourism and investment from these two substantial economies. For a small, tourism reliant nation such as Middle Earth this is rather big news. Sir Peter Jackson has surely made a name for himself, the Kiwi technical cinema industry and New Zealand as a whole, which will only grow positively in the years to come. As Kiwis would say, hes a bloomin good chap.

FaCT BoX
premiere however, seems to have irked many a person. The Twitter and Facebook spheres have been alight with just as many journalists and members expressing how embarrassing and over-the-top New Zealands enthusiasm and preparations were citing that we were the only small country with small nation syndrome - making a big deal out of something that other places would find normal. They, however, need to get over it and be happy for such Kiwi success. Yes, we are doing a lot for the premiere and it is indeed because we are a small country but the rest of the world loves it and we need a platform to celebrate the success that Sir Peter and his team have brought to our shores. The films also showcase the technical and graphic skills of our experts and inspire budding hopefuls to make their name and find their place in our industry. The PreCiouS eCoNomy In addition to inspiring cinematic hopefuls, the trilogy has also created over 3000 jobs in the country, most of which were sought to be filled by locals. Yes, arguably these jobs have been subsidised by taxpayers and the government subsidy of the films. This however, is an investment in the millions the movies will bring in both in the short and long term. Tourism New Zealand chief executive Kevin Bowler hopes that the films will put New Zealand in the top 10 tourist locations estimating that 6 per cent of all visitors to New Zealand cite the films as a major reason for their visit and 1 per cent stating that they films were the main reason. This should bring in a tentative $500 million in spending money estimates Bower. As Bower outlines, the films reach farther

Mother Teresa brings diverse faiths together

sinner stands before you. These were the opening words of a keynote address by the Honourable Gopalkrishna Gandhi at an inter- faith meeting held at Christ the King Catholic Church in Owairaka, Auckland last month to honour the legacy of Nobel Laureate, Mother Teresa of Calcutta. He called himself a sinner because he said he had no moral right to speak about Mother Teresa

Gopalkrishna Gandhi (at the centre in white) with Mayor Len Brown to his left and Indian High Commissioner A K Pandey (right) and Bishop Patrick Dunn (behind)

as he had never given until it hurts as she did, he said. Mr Gandhi is Mahatma Gandhis grandson and the former Governor of West Bengal. The Catholic Bishop of Auckland, Bishop Patrick Dunn hosted this inter-faith gathering. Auckland Mayor Len Brown, the Indian High Commissioner to New Zealand Mr A K Pandey, the Chair of the Mother Teresa Committee, Wenceslaus Anthony, Members of

Parliament and representatives of the worlds major faiths and leaders of the community all participated in the ceremony. Wenceslaus Anthony, Chair of Mother Teresa Inter faith Committee in his address said that we salute the large congregation today for the courage that they have to come and be part of a strong movement that is being built in the name of Mother Teresa of Calcutta- a

movement of people for the people for only one motive which Mother stood for Love and Peace. This movement has no political leaning, hierarchy structure but people of all faiths, communities and inclinations to come together, serve and be the voice of the voiceless to spread happiness, peace and love. Mayor Len Brown was clearly impressed with Mr Gandhis senti-

ments and said that he lived every day of his life by Gandhis quote, Be the change you want to see in the world. With the uniting of our city, Auckland is working towards being the most tolerant, inclusive city - an exemplar to the world, he said to a gathering that was packed to capacity for the occasion. Representatives of the worlds major faiths Hinduism, Islamic, Sikh, Buddhism, Zoroastrian and Jewish read reflections from their holy books led by Catholic Bishop of Auckland Patrick Dunn. There was song and dance from their various cultures and traditions. A substantial cheque to Mother Teresas sisters in Auckland was handed over by the CEO of the Auckland Catholic Caring Foundation.

university moves to strengthen education ties

V
ictoria University is heading up a new organisation to deepen educational ties between New Zealand and India. The New Zealand India Research Institute, based at Victoria and directed by Professor Sekhar Bandyopadhyay, an authority on Indian history and development, involves nearly 40 academics in five New Zealand universities Victoria, Auckland, Massey, Canterbury and Otago. It is modelled on the highly successful New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre, also based at Victoria, which carries out a wide range of initiatives and promotes research to ensure New Zealand engages effectively with China. Because of New Zealands size, no university has a large number of academics working on research related to India. By coming together in a national centre of Indian studies, we can have an impact both in terms of the research we carry out and in our engagement with academics in India, Prof Bandyopadhyay said. He says the Institute will carry out research on Indian diaspora in New Zealand and also leverage the knowledge of Indian expatriates in New Zealand. The Institute is one of a number of initiatives under the umbrella of the India-New Zealand Education Council (INZEC) which is co-chaired by New Zealands Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce and Indias Minister of Human Resources Development. The council has a jointly funded budget of $1 million and was set up last year to drive greater cooperation in education between New Zealand and India. The Institute will focus on five areas society and culture, migration, economics and business, e nv i r o n m e nt a l sustainabilit y and politics and security. In addition to promoting research on India and New Zealand-India relations, it will encourage postgraduate studies on India in New Zealand universities and facilitate academic exchanges between India scholars in New Zealand, India and other parts of the world. A key benefit for New Zealand, says Prof Bandyopadhyay, will be greater visibility of its education capability in India. There is significant potential for more engagement in the education field, both in terms of Indian students coming to New Zealand to study and carry out research, and for our India scholars to be involved in research projects with colleagues in India. For India, he says, there is the opportunity to work with universities in New Zealand that are ranked in the top 500 in the world.

The Institute has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indias top university Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhiand is negotiating an MOU with another top university, the University of Hyderabad. It is planning to hold two conferences in New Zealand next year for academics from New Zealand and India as well as a joint IndoNew Zealand conference in India. In addition to its research role, says Professor Bandyopadhyay, the Institute is well placed to be a leader in other activities of INZEC. The Institute has the expertise to manage and promote higher education and research activity between the two countries. India is a major education market for New Zealand. The Institute can help to realise the significant potential that exists.

disappointed. He felt sad to see India divided into dark and bright areas. He felt angry for the wall standing between these two areas. Then he asked, Where are my dreams? I said, It seems they are covered with the soot and dust emitted by these industries. He said, I dreamed of a developed India and I am very disappointed to see this. I said, Please look there. We found some of the activists trying hard to remove the dust and making his dreams visible. He looked at them with lots of hopes in his eyes. His hopes were exactly like sunrays that I could see coming from back of the building. I realised that it was morning and the date was 14th of November. With a great excitement I said, Chacha Nehru, Wish you a very Happy Birthday. He said, Thank you dear. What would you like to do today as its a very special day for all Indians? I asked. I would like to bless India. He blessed India to have more and more courageous children like todays activists so that everyone in the nation lives within equal and proper brightness. Then he decided to go back and said, Lets go. We went back to his aircraft and as soon as it started, there was a flash of light. When I looked around I found myself in my chair. There was nobody near me and I couldnt see Chacha Nehru any more. I dont know whether it was my dream or a miracle or all about the technology that I didnt understand.

technology. You will not understand it. A very happy Diwali to you. I thanked him and asked, What is the reason for coming here? He said, I was searching for a company to celebrate Diwali. I asked, But why me? He said, Because you were missing your Diwali days of India very much? I asked, How you know about this? He said, Its all about technology and you will not understand it. Then he asked, Do you want to come with me to celebrate in India? With great excitement I replied, Yes, why not? He said, Then lets go. I asked, How can we go? It is so far from here and will take time. He said, We are going by my hi-tech aircraft and will reach there within minutes. This time instead of asking, I said, Ohits all about technology and I will not understand it. He said I was right. As we were flying he asked, Can you see India? As I looked down there were many lights and India was glowing in that Diwali night. Chacha Nehru asked me, Do you like it? I said, Yes, its wonderful. After a while I said, Please look at this part of India its not shining. From above, we found India divided into two parts. One part was dark and other was bright. The dark area was becoming darker and darker. We decided to land in

t was Diwali evening and I was reading an Indian calendar to see the muhurat for the Laxmi Pooja. While reading, my eyes went on next days date, 14th November, and found written Bal Diwas (Childrens Day). I remembered this day when I was in school and my teacher told me to give a speech on Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. I wrote a speech on him and showed it to my teacher. The teacher corrected my speech by writing Chacha Nehru instead of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Remembering that day, I decided to write an article on Childrens Day. After having Pooja and delicious Diwali dinner, I opened my laptop and started searching about Pandit Nehru on Internet. I found some of the images and photos of Nehruji. When I was looking, I liked one of his photos very much. I concentrated on that image. Suddenly there was a flash of light. When I looked around I found Pandit Nehru sitting on the chair adjacent to my chair. I was so astonished that my face turned red. I exclaimed Chacha Chacha Neh Nehru! He said, Hello my child how are you? With great confusion I asked, How can you be here? He said, I came here from your computer. I asked, How is it possible? He answered, I love technology and it is all about

this area. When we went closure to this part we found it was unhealthy and very dark. It was polluted with the black smoke and soot. In this area there were people living with poverty and unemployment. People were breathing polluted air of corruption. There was child labour and illiteracy. This area was under developed. It was becoming darker and darker because of continuous emission of polluted air and black smoke which was coming from the industries. We also found other areas near to this. It was very different from the dark area. There were many lights and powerful lamps. In this area there were many industries with all the advanced technologies. The lights in this area were so powerful that there was a strong reflection. No one could see the actual happen-

ings in these industries because of the glaring lights. Even Chacha Nehru found difficult to see it from inside. What we could see was that some of Chacha Nehrus brave children, who were from dark area fighting to enter this bright area. They wanted to see and wanted to show others the reality behind these industries. They were fighting courageously for the equality of brightness. They also want strict laws and new regulations to prevent their area from pollution. They were called activists. On the other hand, we were surprised to see some of Chacha Nehrus children, who were so near and dear to him as security guards standing near the main gates of the industries. When he saw these children as security guards, he became very

Manukau Indian Associations (MIA) Diwali celebration was held in joint association with the Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust and Radio Humm 106.2 FM. The Festival was held at Telstra Clear Pacific Event Centre and drew in very large crowds throughout the entire day. It was an inclusive gathering of many Indain groups from all over India and non-Indian groups from Mayor of Auckland Len Brown, National MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi member of the Labour Party as well as many other guests. During the day children and adults from all parts of India took part in dancing and singing performances keeping the crowds entertained throughout the whole day. Many non-Indian groups also took part in singing and dancing to

The Diwali concert at the Auckland Indian Association had little stars in action. Some wonderful performances by the children made the evening a memorable one.

Diwali at rotorua
On Saturday, 17th November the BOP (Rotorua) Indian Association celebrated Diwali at the Gandhi Hall on Gibson Street Rotorua. This was the 77th year that this organisation has been in operation and providing a platform for all Indian people to enjoy and celebrate the diverse Indian culture. More than 300 people attended the celebrations including his worship the mayor Kevin Winters and Rotorua MP Todd McClay among other invited guests. President Shashi Patel said, We are very proud of the fact that our Diwali cultural show is performed by our Rotorua, BOP members of the community with all performances choreographed by our local people and performed for our local people. We think this is hugely important as it gives a great platform to our own community, especially our young children and the youth. Diwali is all about celebrating all that is good and focussing on positive things, spending time with loved one and sharing great food with your friends and family. International flags fly at auckland Town hall

Countries that maintain a diplomatic presence in Auckland brought some colour to the Auckland Town Hall lately when Mayor Len Brown hosted the 31st annual consular corps flag raising and civic luncheon. Auckland-based international consul generals, honorary consuls and life members of the consular corps gathered to raise 59 flags on the town halls Aotea Square side. The flags, each representing a nation with a consular presence in Auckland, are raised each year and fly on the town hall throughout the summer months. This annual event and the flags are an acknowledgement of the work the Auckland con-

sular corps does to help foster greater cultural, economic and political links between our countries, says Len Brown. The flags highlight the presence of international governments in Auckland, and symbolise the important role our international communities play in day-to-day Auckland life. They also play an important part in recognising the cultural diversity of our city. Cities have a strong part to play in fostering friendly relations between communities, and this event is a way for Auckland to say thank you to the consular corps for their contribution to Auckland.

FDi debate rocks Parliament

New Delhi: Indias Parliament on Tuesday began a two-day debate on foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail as the government and the opposition exchanged blows ahead of a vote. But it was the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj that kept the government on the edge through the day as they remained ambivalent on which side they will take on the vote. The day began with Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj opposing FDI in multi brand retail and saying Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should fight for the poor and country and not for multinationals who would deal a body blow to small traders. "Fight for the poor and not for the rich. Fight for the country and not for multinationals," said Swaraj at a heated debate on FDI. "Fight for our own country and not outsiders and we would be by your side. I can assure that at the world investors' summit I will go with your and say that India is not against FDI in every sector. They can come in sectors like infrastructure," said Swaraj. "It will be a grand occasion if the Prime Minister of India and the Leader of Opposition go together and invite them to invest in India," said Swaraj. She said there is no need for FDI in selling rice and wheat, something that our people are doing and can do well. and asked if companies like WalMart would offer loans to farmers when they need it. For quite some time there were shouting as she spoke and attacked the government over their claims. Speaker Meira Kumar later pacified them and Swaraj resumed speaking. Swaraj said China would benefit while there would be darkness in Indian homes. Defending government decision on FDI in multibrand retail, Union Minister Kapil Sibal said it was not mandatory for all states to implement multi-brand retail. "I do not understand the point of this discussion..If states do not want to implement FDI in retail then let them not do it. All these talks of Opposition are exaggerated," Sibal said. He said: "It is not correct to say that foreign retailers will ruin country's economy...Foreign retail shops permitted only in cities with more than 10 lakh population. I must say India has 53 such cities....We were told that Opposition ruled states did not want FDI in retail in those states. If you exclude these then only 18 cities will be left who can implement this policy." Slamming the opposition parties, Sibal said: "How can the Opposition stop Chief Ministers who want to implement FDI in retail? Is it constitutional?" He said debate on the issue is unnecessary as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had promised FDI in retail in its 2004 manifesto. "The BJP should explain that why it changed its mind on FDI in retail in 2009 after supporting it in 2004," Sibal said. Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav expressed his opposition to FDI but later speaking to reporters, refused to take a side over the vote. "As far as FDI in retail is concerned, it is not good for the country. It is not going to benefit the farmers of the country," Yadav said. "Small traders will not be able to compete with the big retailers. This is going to lead to unemployment," he said. "We advise the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government to drop plans of implementing FDI in retail," Yadav said. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Saugata Roy opposed the FDI in multi-brand retail and said: "The TMC had shown moral courage by opposing the FDI in retail. When we moved the no-confidence motion against the government on this issue, no one stood with us at that time." The relationship between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's TMC and the UPA touched its lowest point when it withdrew support to the latter over its recent economic reforms, including FDI in multi-brand retail, hike in diesel price and cap on subsidy in LPG cylinders. Despite the drama Congress won the votes for FDI against the opposition.

Sushma Swaraj

Addressing the Prime Minister, Swaraj said: "So I ask you to reconsider your decision. We do not want to defeat you but make you change your view and come with us." Uproar was witnessed in Lok Sabha over the debate on the FDI on Tuesday and all hell broke loose when Swaraj was speaking. Swaraj said the government did not take the lawmakers or parties into confidence while making the decisions despite promises to do so made earlier by present President Pranab Mukherjee, who was then the Finance Minister. Swaraj said they were stubborn over the issue because the government did not consult them. "The government is showcasing figures, but no one knows from where those figures come," she said,

Washington: Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams has returned to earth after 127 days in space with a new record under her belt - the most spacewalking time by a female at 50 hours and 40 minutes over seven career excursions. Williams, who was commander of Expedition 33 on the International Space Station returned home with two space-going colleagues aboard a Russian Soyuz capsule that landed at 8:56 p.m. Sunday night northeast of Arkalyk in the steppes of Kazakhstan, according to US space agency NASA. Williams has logged 322 days during two space flights making her second on the list of most experienced US female astronauts. She also holds the record of longest spaceflight (195 days) for female space travellers. While on the outpost, her team welcomed SpaceXs Dragon capsule making its first official cargo delivery, which included fresh apples and chocolate-vanilla swirl ice cream.

Direct flights a win-win for all

The prospect flights direct from Sydney to India can only be welcomed with joy by thousands of Indians living in New Zealand and also those intending to travel for the first time. If recent comments by the Indian High Commissioner to New Zealand are anything to go by, direct flights to India from this part of the world can be a possibility soon. High Commissioner AK Pandey, in an exclusive interview with this newspaper recently, said the possibility of direct Sydney-India (Mumbai, Delhi) was on the agenda of his term in office, which he assumed earlier this year. The direct route from Australia would cut travel time by almost half saving the thousands of travellers in time and money. At the moment, visitors to India from New Zealand have to travel Thai Air, Malaysian Airlines, or Singapore Airlines to reach either Mumbai or Delhi. Taking into account (short-term and long-term) transits, etc, this could end up taking as long as 24 hours. One local travel industry insider tells me this travel time could be halved if a direct Sydney-India took place. While the benefits to ordinary consumers are first to come to mind, the flow-on economic rewards are endless. India, in recent times, has been New Zealands 17th largest trading partner, attracting more than 30,000 (and growing) visitors to the country. Free Trade Agreement talks between New Zealand and India have been on for a while and closer travel ties may bring it just a tad closer to sealing a deal. Bilateral trade between India and New Zealand could rise from its current US$1 billion to US$3 billion by 2014, the Indian Governments Minister of Commerce and Industry Anand Sharma said earlier this year. These sentiments were echoed this week by High Commissioner Pandey at a India-NZ business forum in Waikato. Minister Sharma earlier this year was speaking at an India-New Zealand Business Council and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry joint business forum in Auckland. Sharma and Pandey both described current trade levels as well below their potential and the projected increase in bilateral trade as not only optimism but realism. The increase is do-able, citing opportunities for New Zealand businesses in Indias food, generic pharmaceuticals, biotech, education, services, research and development , tourism, film and wine sectors, Sharma said. New Zealand Trade Minister Tim Groser highlighted New Zealands interest in broadening its export portfolio to India from its current emphasis on cooking coal and wood. While talks on the free trade agreement may be just at the half-way mark, talks of increased and direct air travel may just be the catalyst for a renewed surge on the FTA. The proposal for direct flights from Sydney to India has the makings of a win-win for: the people, the New Zealand economy, Indian economy, and the region as a whole. Lets breathe some life into it, now. - Arvind Kumar

The art of leadership

Pooja SuNdar David Shearer may have won the caucus battle but he still has a long haul before winning the war. On Tuesday 20th November, Labour Members of Parliament endorsed David Shearer as the Labour leader against David Cunliffe. The latter was stripped of his leading position in the party and all his portfolios. The demotion followed a weekend of Cunliffe dodging questions at the annual Labour conference about whether he sought to challenge the leadership of the party. Shearer stated that while he did not want to take such action, he had no choice but to do so as the other David had shown very little respect for the party and its leader. Shearer stated that while he did not want to take such action, he had no choice but to do so as the other David had shown very little respect for the party and its leader. The opposition leader did however state that Cunliffe may regain his position and respect by showing great loyalty to the party. Despite his demotion however, Cunliffe may still give Shearer a run for his leadership position come February at the Labour leader confidence vote. The new party rule requires a leadership contest to be held if 40 per cent of the party refuses to support the leader. The support from the caucus came of the back of the sea of doubt Shearer has been facing in the media for past six months in relation to his demeanour and lack of experience. The media has been pitting him against Cunliffe who held a prominent position under the Clark government. The latter has been using his experience and his Harvard education in persuading businessmen to accept Labours capital gains tax plans over that of Bill English and Nationals during last years Mood of the Boardroom debate last year. In addition to this, he is the polar opposite of Shearer in the sense that he is clear, aggressive and experienced both in the business world and the political sphere. All this said however, Shearer does have something that Cunliffedoesnt asimple, likeable air. Everyone wants to believe in him and his leadership. Nevertheless, he has been sloppy on the issues and a forgettable at the podium. Machiavelli said, in his legendary book The Prince, that it is better to be a respected leader than a loved one. Cunliffe has already established that to an extent and it is fear of a divided party that is mainly keeping him from being leader. Shearer needs to aspire to follow Machiavellis direction. If he is also loved in the process, that is a bonus. Labour would not have called a confidence vote if 100 per cent of party supported Shearer. So it can be easily reasoned that there will indeed be a fight over the next two months for the leadership if not overtly, then through the media and public appearances. If Shearer wants to keep his position, he needs to hire a public speaking specialist and sort out his public persona working especially on impromptu answers and unscripted speeches. In addition to this Shearer must also match Cunliffes experience withthorough knowledge of the issues and a determined manner. As Sun Tzu writes, in The Art of War, never underestimate your enemy. It surely wouldnt hurt for him to read The Prince and The Art of War. * Pooja Sundar is a third year law and politics student at the University of Auckland

Comment
itself and in doing so, will adjust its climate accordingly. On the more thoughtful side, there are people who think some great cosmic change will befall earthlings a greater understand of their situation and their purpose in the cosmic web of life. Too many doubt that will happen as we no longer believe in the spirit, and thus, logically, this would be impossible. If we are inclined to believe the Mayan calendar stating 21 DecemSo, why are we pinning our understanding on a calendar made by people long dead, who may be just a surviving off shoot of a still more ancient civilisation, and who were left scattered into primitive tribes after the collapse of their civilisation (aided by invaders)? One thought is that history repeats itself and repeated history, though boring, is a teaching device for the intelligent. And we must learn this history to find out what happened to these people so we can be prepared for whatever killed their civilisation. What caused the end of this extraordinary civilisation mentioned even the epics of ancient India? Uloopi of the Arjuna saga was of the serpent nation, similar to the feathered serpent legend of the Mayans and Toltecs. In most cases, the South American nations were at loggerheads with ancient Indian civilisation and sometimes went all out to destroy each other. Most believe climate change was on cause of their demise. Just as the great Saraswati civilisation on the Indian peninsula disappeared almost into nothing after the course of river was diverted/disappeared, so something calamitous happened with the South American civilisation. Earthly upheavals left seaside cities 3000 metres up in the mountain, sunk some of them without a trace, and left others without resources to sustain itself. It was the end of that civilisation as they knew it. The geology of the Earth is full of evidence of great terrestrial upheavals since from before the time of the dinosaurs. The earth remakes itself as and when it feels the need. And its inhabitants are either wiped out, or learn to adapt, or go on to flourish in the new climate. Scientists say one such great upheaval is long-overdue. As to their calendar, could it just be that the astrologers who were compiling that calendar one day decided they had bean-counted enough into the future and left the rest to be completed by someone else? And then disaster struck and no-one could or wanted to carry on they would just be trying to survive. Lets not put so much importance to the Mayan calendar and the sudden end of days it seemingly states. Rather, seek to find out what the history of that civilisation has to teach us. And start taking climate change seriously. Meanwhile, Christmas is around the corner and probably no-one cares about the end of the world not with so much happening. People have been saying The end is nigh since the beginning of the Christian era. The Book of Revelations has been quoted, misquoted and quoted again, and the second coming has been happening for 2000 years. And we have been going from strength to strength in our achievement as the crowing glory of life on Earth. We are good. What is there to worry about? So, Merry Christmas - if we do reach that date.

is the end near?

O
NaLINESH aruN
n 21 December, 2012, the world is going to end. Or not. A somewhat large chunk of the online community worldwide has latched on to the end of the world based on the Mayan calendar stopping on this date. If the Mayans, sez them people, could extrapolate their calendar out to CE 2012 three thousand years ago, they must have known something. And that something is the end of the world, of that they are adamant. Who are the Mayans? More importantly, why should any one place any importance on their calendar collated circa 3000 BC? The Mayans are an ancient race in South America noted for their pyramids and ancient city ruins. Some say they may be the remnants of an even older race, the Olmecs, who may, or may not, have been the architects of several cities with pyramids in South America. The ruins of these cities offers glimpses of high technology and science that existed in a time before present memory whether during the Olmecs or the Mayan dynasties is still in questions. What do the people think will happen on, around, or after 21 December? 1. The planet will slip its skin. This includes pole shift (or reversal) ; rise of new continents/islands; submerging of existing landmass either all or some. Could lead to gigantic tsunamis or super volcanoes happening all over the planet. 2. Cosmic collision while NASA has ruled out any heavenly body heading towards Earth, it has not stopped some of coming up with bizarre theories. These include Planet X or Niburu offloading its inhabitants or offloading all of itself on Earth. Or the earth veering from its designated path around the Sun, leading to great climate calamities a new mini ice age, or a barren, hot planet. 3. Cosmic bombardment the Earth will lose its magnetic shield. This could happen if the planets rotation either speeds up or slows down (or the planet stops rotating altogether), cutting into its ability to generate the magnetic shield that keeps at bay the Suns harmful ultraviolet rays. Some people are actually forward to getting this huge dose of radiation so that mankind can evolve on to its next stage. 4. Natural disasters galore. In a bid to correct the imbalances imposed by the human population, the Earth will seek out to balance

ber 2012 as the time of end of the world, lets just keep one thing in mind: the Mayan civilisation ended hundreds of years ago and they had little or no inkling of their demise. If they had, they would have stated it somewhere in stone. They put everything else of importance in stone which is how we know of their calendar.

Fiji Budget 2013: spending, taxing and incentives

NEELESH GouNdEr
The following provides a brief discussion on some of the key spending, taxation and new incentives from the 2013 budget. Rather than seeking to span the breadth of the budget content, this article extracts the key substance from the 2013 budget and provides a critical analysis. 1. Elections Office (F$11m) The allocation of F$11 million to the Elections Office to prepare for the 2014 parliamentary elections signals a positive development. This provides certainty, to a large extent, that elections will be held in 2014 as promised. It should thus provide the environment for the foundation required to create confidence and faith in the future direction of our political system. 2. Health (F$167m) An increase of F$15 million (compared to fiscal year 2012) to the Ministry of Health is absolute justifiable. This is an important government department that provides a vital service in any country. Any increase towards health should create positive spill overs. Nonetheless, Fijis health system will require more funding over the years to bring it to a higher standard. This cannot be achieved overnight and will need sustained higher levels of spending in the future. 3. Education (F$268m) Education is another important component of any nations budgetary expenditure. Allocation for Ministry of Education takes care of primary, secondary and tertiary education. The budgetary allocation for Ministry of Education plays a critical role in Fijis human capital development, which is one of the fundamental factors of long term economic growth. The government has also assigned funding to further develop preschool education. While long overdue, this should boost the ability of those entering the primary school and give them a head start. Fiji is blessed with a good primary and secondary education system. However, efforts should be made to compare how our students perform in international assessments compared to other countries. 4. Fiji Roads Authority (F$422m) Quality of government spending is always a concern. Provision of F$422 million for infrastructure is beyond doubt a quality spending. Infrastructure in Fiji has been falling apart and this injection should provide the much needed funds required to repair and improve roads and ageing bridges. No previous government in Fiji since independence has ever allocated more F$400 million (in real terms) for any reform or government department. This is indicative of the extent of the current problem in infrastructure. Spending in infrastructure development should thus provide positive externalities by making travelling to and from work and transporting goods more efficiently and thereby providing productivity gains. 5. Fiji Police Force (F$92m) Rule of law and order is necessary to provide confidence in the workings of an economic system. There has been legitimate concern about the recent rise in crime, particularly violent robberies, and prison breakouts. It not only creates fear amongst the public but provides bad publicity for tourists and foreign investors. With tourism one of the most important industries and a nation in dire need of foreign investment for job creation, a well-equipped and efficient police force and a competent judiciary should be of utmost priority to the government. Thus the government has got its priority right by increasing the budget for Fiji Police Force compared to 2012. 6. Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection (F$32.3m) Poverty is one of the most important problems facing Fiji today. While there has been significant reduction in poverty around the world in the last decade, poverty has actually increased in Fiji. Increases in funding for poverty alleviation, particularly welfare payments to the absolute poor (maximum of F$150 per month), only shows the failure of previous governments policies to reduce poverty. The government should ensure that strong economic growth is achieved to make a significant dent on poverty and improve living standards. This will, at least in the long run, take care of the welfare role that has come to be expected of the government. Any welfare program should be temporary as a culture of entitlement is usually politically difficult to break. 7. Tourism (F$23.5m) Tourism is now Fijis foremost industry in terms of employment and foreign exchange earnings. There has been almost a 100 per cent rise (in nominal terms) in allocation for Fijis tourism industry during the last decade. In real terms, this represents almost an 80 per cent rise. While this sounds good on paper, the government should question the marginal benefits of additional funding. The argument regarding the multiplier effect of tourism is not good enough in this case. An independent study examining the costs and benefits of more funding would be the way to go. 8. Sugar Industry (F$15m) Once regarded as the backbone of the Fijian economy, the industry was on the verge of collapse only a few years ago. The turnaround, with support from the government, has been notable. The budgetary expenditure for the sugar industry includes implementation of a quality cane payment system. While this would be probably one of the most innovative and long overdue measures to be implemented in the industry during the last decade, more systemic problems still plaque the industry. In particular, the current property rights in relation to ownership and usage of land has been one of the major factors for the downfall of the industry. Unless supply side constraints are resolved, there is not much hope for the industry. Government support through subsidies may revitalise the industry in the short term, but it may still find it difficult to survive in the long term if it does not lift overall productivity and competitiveness. 9. Taxes Personal tax threshold has been increased to F$16,000. On paper it looks like this should provide relief to households that fall into F$15,600 (current threshold) to F$16 000. However, one also needs to look at how many in this bracket actually paid any tax at the time tax returns are finalised. By not charging taxes to people who tax were deducted but refunded at the end of the year, is not providing any real benefit to those households. Some better incentives include tax benefits to foreign firms that relocate headquarters to Fiji and 18.5 per cent corporate tax rate to newly listed companies on South Pacific Stock Exchange with 40 per cent local shareholding. In a small economy such as Fiji, the obligation to pay corporate taxes falls on shareholders is unlikely and that the ultimate burden of corporate tax falls mainly on labour. Higher corporate taxes thus results in lower investment in the economy and a smaller capital stock. This in turn leads to lower labour productivity of labour and, therefore, lower wages. 10. Investment Incentives The decision to implement tax free zone from Korovou to Tavua for the agricultural sector is a welcome move. This should provide the incentives for new investment. Nonetheless, supply side constraints relating to land ownership and leasing that have crippled the agricultural sector may impede new investment decisions. The argument is not new and has been discussed before. The institutional structure of property rights relating to land needs major reforms if it is to respond to the needs of a modern Fijian economy. n Indias mainstream politics teeming with artful dodgers and double speaks of leaders, Bal Thackeray was like a bull in the China shop who lived by his conviction though his self-styled brand of nationalism was hardly palatable to majority in politics of propriety, including the national Hindu parties like BJP. But the man whom his Marathi followers would call the King of Hindu Heart in Maharashtra and who was as much revered as feared and despised, Bal Thackerays life was the stuff Bollywood films were made of. In fact the tinsel town was in awe and fear of Bal Thackeray and they would always keep him in good humour knowing his stance on Pakistani actors and singers working in Mumbai. His opposition to playing of cricket with enemy country Pakistan is well known. So much so that Shiv Sainiks were asked to dig up cricket pitch to stop matches while he himself did not shy away from verbally attacking cricket icon of India, Sachin Tendulkar, on occasions. He was openly anti-south Indian at some point and also known for leading a party that was against communities like the Biharis and their presence in Mumbai. Thackeray had even praised Hitler once. He was quoted by Asiaweek as saying: I am a great admirer of Hitler, and I am not ashamed to say so! I do not say that I agree with all the methods he employed, but he was a wonderful organiser and orator, and I feel

ek Tha Tiger...

The tiger maybe no more but his brawls live on. Bal Thackerays death not only sparked an expected shutdown of the Maharashtra state for several days but also fumed the arrest of two innocent girls and an ongoing controversy over his memorial at Shivaji Park in Mumbai
that he and I have several things in common...What India really needs is a dictator who will rule benevolently, but with an iron hand. He was an unabashed regionalist and known for his blind espousal of the cause of Marathi people (Marathi manoos). Interestingly, Bal Thackeray had joined hands with George Fernandes and Sharad Pawar (then Congress-S leader) in October 1982 against the ruling Congress. So his death was end of an era in Maharashtra and national politics in course of which many opposed to his functioning struggled to come to terms with his politics, often marked by street violence by the followers known as Shiv Sainiks. Born on 1926, Thackeray began his career as a cartoonist with the English language daily The Free Press Journal in Mumbai. He later left it in 1960 to form his own political weekly Marmik. His political philosophy was largely shaped by his father Keshav Sitaram Thackeray, who advocated the creation of a separate linguistic state of Maharashtra. Through Marmik, he campaigned against the growing influ-

ence of Gujaratis, Marwaris, and southern Indians in Indias financial capital Mumbai. He founded Shiv Sena in June 1966 as an outcome of a movement in Mumbai demanding preferential treatment for Maharashtrians over migrants to the city. But over years he became a power centre in Mumbai whom all communities began to fear or respect. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Thackeray built the party by forming temporary alliances with nearly all of Maharashtras political parties. Thackeray was the founder of the Marathi-language newspaper Saamana and the Hindi-language newspaper Dophar Ka Saamana. The Shiv Sena is a key partner of the Bharatiya Janaya Party (BJP)led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The BJP-Shiv Sena combine won the 1995 Maharashtra State Assembly elections and came to power. In 1999, Bal Thackeray was banned from voting and contesting in any election for six years on the recommendations of the Election Commission. According to analysts, his politics sought to demonise non-Marathis. Said political commentator Paranjay Guha Thakurta: For him, Pakistan was the evil empire. He did not want India to play cricket. He epitomised ultra nationalism. He was riddled with contradictions because he ranted against dynastic politics of other parties but supported his own son over nephew when it came to his own party.

Thackeray memorial gets Facebook outrage a fresh dramatic angle

Mumbai: The controversy over a memorial for late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray at Shivaji Park gave a new twist to the demands with a Shiv Sena leader claiming that the late party chiefs cremation site is as holy as the Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya. The partys Rajya Sabha member and spokesperson Sanjay Raut said this when asked about the demands from various quarters for a memorial to Thackeray. It has become a land of faith for the Shiv Sainiks and after Balasahebs cremation, it is considered as holy as Ram J a n m a b h o o m i , Raut said. Reacting sharply to this, Nationalist Congress Party spokesperson Nawab Malik asked the Shiv Sena not to capitalise or politicise Thackerays death. Shortly after Thackerays death, senior leader and former Lok Sabha speaker Manohar Joshi demanded that a memorial to the Sena supremo should come up at Shivaji Park. Joshi said the Sena would construct the memorial at Shivaji Park despite opposition. His statement was criticised by the Maharashtra Congress. Even as local groups have opposed the memorial, the state government has not taken any decision on the issue. Having historical and cultural significance, the 28-acre Shivaji Park, in Dadar, close to the Arabian Sea, is also considered the cradle of Indian cricket, nurturing some of the top cricketers of the country.

i K Gujral passes away

New Delhi: Indias 12th Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral, whose policy of pacifism with neighbours continues to influence the Asian giants foreign policy architecture, passed away after a multi-organ failure in Gurgaon on November 30. He was 93. Gujral, who had served as the 12th Prime Minister of India in the United Front government from April 1997 to March 1998, is survived by his two sons, Naresh and Vishal. Both Houses of the Parliament were adjourned for the day on Friday as a mark of respect to the former Prime Minister of the country. In his message, the Prime Minister said: In his passing, the country has lost an intellectual, a scholar-statesman and a gentleman politician whose liberal and humanist vision was rooted in the teachings of the leaders of our freedom movement. I personally have lost a friend of long standing, whose wisdom, idealism and deep concern for social equity left a great impression on me and whose counsel and opinion I often sought and valued greatly, Manmohan Singh said. Shri Gujral was a man of peace, an idealist who lived by his principles and an intellectual with the human touch. No matter what portfolio he held, what shone through always was his sincerity and warmth, compassion for his fellow human beings and the legacy of strongly held socialist beliefs from his youthful experiences, he said. Born on Dec 4, 1919 in Jhelum town, which is now in Pakistan, Gujral participated in Indias

Mumbai: Maharashtra Police are likely to file a closure report in the case of arrest of two girls for questioning on Facebook the Mumbai shutdown following Bal Thackerays death, the state police chief said on Nov 29. Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil said the two police officials involved in the arrests of Shaheen Dadha and her friend Renu Srinivasan have been suspended and others given strict warnings. Police arrested Shaheen Nov 18 for posting a comment on her Facebook page questioning the shutdown after Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackerays death Nov 17 and when he was given a public cremation the next day. Her friend Renu, who had liked the comment, was also arrested. The arrests led to a huge outcry with protests by youngsters and a formal letter by the Press Council of India chairman Markandey Katju to the Chief Minister questioning the arrests. The Bombay High Court has also transferred the magistrate who released the girls on a bail of Rs.15,000 each.

freedom struggle, and was jailed in 1942 during the Quit India Movement. Gujral had left the Indian National Congress party in the mid1980s and joined the Janata Dal. Even before joining Congress he was a member of the underground Communist party. His Gujral Doctrine, was known for espousing better relations with neighbours. The Gujral Doctrine is a set of five principles to guide the conduct of foreign relations with Indias immediate neighbours as spelt out by Gujral, first as Indias External Affairs Minister and later as the Prime Minister.

based artist Karen Newman, was unveiled Nov 8 in Gordon Square, near the house where Noor lived. The event marks the end of several years of campaigning by the Noor Inayat Khan Memorial Trust to revive the memory of the forgotten war heroine, the trust said in a statement. The campaign, led by Noors biographer Shrabani Basu, has received the support of Prime Minister David Cameron, and several MPs and peers, as well as from eminent women like Shami Chakrabarti, Gurinder Chadha, Anoushka Shankar and Nina Wadia. We are delighted that the Princess Royal is unveiling the bust. It will be the highest honour for Noor, said Shrabani Basu, author of Spy Princess, The Life of Noor Inayat Khan and founder of the trust. The memorial for Noor will ensure that her story of bravery and sacrifice is not forgotten by future generations, she said. Noor was posthumously awarded the George Cross by Britain and France awarded her the Croix de Guerre. The University of London, which owns Gordon Square, gave permission for the installation of the bust in 2010. Born in Moscow to an Indian father, Hazrat Inayat Khan and an American mother, Ora Ray Baker, Noor was a descendant of Tipu Sultan, the 18th century ruler of Mysore. The family lived in London and moved to Paris when Noor was six. In 1940 as Paris fell to occupation, Noor returned to London to volunteer for the war effort. She joined the Womens Auxiliary Air Force and was eventually recruited by the Special Operations Executive (SOE). As an SOE agent, Noor lived on 4 Taviton St near Gordon Square and would often spend her off-days reading on a bench in the square. The Trust has raised 60,000 pounds for the memorial from public donations.

Democrat Beras victory over sitting Republican Dan Lungren nine days after the election makes him just the third Indian American elected to the House of Representatives, after Saund in 1952 and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who won a House seat in 2004. The race was to fill Californias 7th District Congressional seat representing the suburbs of Sacramento. Now is the time to find common ground and move forward to rebuild an economy that works for the middle class. Deny visa to modi: uS lawmakers to Clinton

Washington: As many as 25 members of the US House of Representatives shot a letter to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and asked her to continue denying visa to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, reports said. The American lawmakers said the senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader's government did not pursue justice for the 2002 Gujarat riots victims adequately. "As Mr Modi continues to pursue a potential run for higher office, we believe a change in policy to his request for a visa will only embolden Modi and his government's efforts to obstruct further investigations and the tandem prosecution that have still to be finished to bring the perpetrators to justice," read the letter. The lawmakers said: "It is disturbing that certain parties in India are considering elevating Modi, despite his tie to these attacks. Allowing him to enter the United States will only serve to abdicate his responsibility for the 2002 human rights abuses." Republican Congressman Joe Pitts and Frank Wolf released the letter, which is dated Nov 29, to the press on Monday. The letter was signed by lawmakers like Trent Franks, Edward Markey, Dan Burton, Jim Jordan, Michael Capuano, Dough Lamborn and John Conyers. The BJP, meanwhile, said the matter was not 'important'. BJP leader Balbir Punj told media: "The

39 Western Ghats locations enter UNESCO list

New Delhi: Minister of Culture Chandresh Kumari Katoch said recently that 39 locations in the Western Ghats in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have been inscribed as a World Heritage Site in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The inclusion was done during the 36th session of World Heritage Committee held in July at St. Petersburg in Russia. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha on December 4, Katoch said the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) establishes National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries and Tiger Reserves under the Wild Life (Protection) Act 1972. "Central assistance is provided to the States. No statutory authority is set up for the conservation of the world heritage sites in the Western Ghats," said the minister.

visa issue is not an important one. We do not need any endorsement from the US." "All we need is blessings of the people of Gujarat," he said. The infamous Gujarat riots of 2002 left hundreds of Muslims dead, injured and tortured and came as a blot in the BJP rule in the state. The riots followed an incident of train burning in Godhra in which Hindus returning from Ayodhya were killed by a Muslim mob. Around 1,000 supporters of prime accused Maulvi Umarjihad attacked the coach at the Godhra station and torched it killing 59 people and injuring many.

Chandigarh says balle balle to 48-hour wonder

While the company announced the building to be complete after assembling the factory-made panels and other construction material, the glass panes on the windows and other fittings inside were still being put by the workers and engineers. It had taken the company to manufacture the entire construction material in a period of over about two months. This material was moved to the site and put together with the help of three cranes and over 200 skilled workers, technicians and engineers to come up with Instacon - a 48-hour wonder. The material used was manufactured in the past two months in a nearby factory. The building used pre-fabricated material, including 200 tonnes of steel. A part of the ground floor was furnished that was showcased to the media. Various works, including air-conditioning, installation of lighting appliances and making toilets, etc, started the construction of the building by drilling a nut to erect the pillars of pre-fabricated steel and by Saturday 4:30 pm, the company announced to have completed the 10-storey building. "Our effort was to put the 10-storeyed structure in place within 48 hours. We wanted to prove that this could be done. That feat was achieved well within 48 hours. Just some finishing touches remain," said Harpal Singh, CMD, Synergy Thrislington. "This will be the first building of its kind in the country to be built in just 48 hours. The model has been cleared for the zone-5 seismic area, the highest risk area (for earthquakes)," Harpal Singh, who owns the JW Marriot Hotel in Chandigarh. This construction mechanism has been approved by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Delhi and Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC) Chennai.

oh my GoDssss!
raM LINGaM India is a not just a country to put it mildly India is a mind-boggling planet. There is so much diversity in India be it the geography, people, lifestyles, languages, customs, politics and even religion etc. For centuries, India's forte has been her 'spirituality and religion' and that too is so diverse. The Indian sphere of God is so different that it appears quite baffling to the modern mind. Naturally therefore, one asks 'How come you guys have so many Gods' etc. But the explanations are not hard to find these days.
There is so much diversity in almost everything Indian - be it the society, cuisines, lifestyles, costumes, languages, customs etc. The knowledge that originated in India made some solid contributions to the world in a variety of fields like science, metallurgy, medicine, literature, mathematics, astronomy et al. The area of spirituality and religion however is India's love affair. What is at the heart of indian spirituality? Interestingly, India is also the birthplace to four dharmic religions Sanatana dharma (aka Hinduism), Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism. So many scriptures, so many paths and so many stories in Indian religions is a smorgasbord approach to reality. There is no one holy book but a huge library of scriptures suitable to God seekers. Of the many spiritual traditions in India, many scholars and Gurus have long maintained that "Vedanta" is the essential philosophy that is at the heart of Hinduism, even to the extent of claiming it to be the science behind all religions. Vedanta (found in the end portion of the Vedas) is considered the essence of Vedic teaching that attempts to rationalise the seeming diversity in God zone. Yet, questions abound because 'to know' is natural for a thinking mind. So many questions on indian religions... Here is a sample of questions that the Vedanta teachers get asked routinely e.g. why so many Gods, why idols, If God is everywhere why go to temples, Why Gods in Hinduism have unusual forms with multiple arms and multiple weapons, Why Lord Ganesha has a elephant head, Why Lord Brahma is seated an a lotus, Why Lord Krishna is said to be blue in colour, Why Lord Murugan rides a peacock, Why did God create this universe etc. These questions have become so popular that almost every other Vedanta based ashram has at least one frequently-asked-questions (FAQs) book that answers those questions. The many avenues that the internet provides these days and the visiting Gurus have also made the answer hunting easy. God with many masks To the popular question, why so many Gods in Hinduism?", Joseph Campbell (1904-1987), one of the foremost interpreters of myth of our times states, "The one God wears many masks, in no other religion does the Supreme Being wear so many masks and invite worship in so many different forms as the eternal religion of Hinduism." Hinduism says the higher power, if it may so be called, can manifest in any form - in the form of Gods and Goddesses. Anything is possible with the higher power. When there is so much variety in the plant world, animal world, sea world, mineral world etc the argument as to why God the creator of all worlds cant appear in any of the myriad forms seems logical. In the Indian wisdom traditions, the ultimate truth or God is called Brahman (not Brahmin). So how does 'Brahman' differ in the common concept of God? For the subtle thinker, God is without attributes (Nir-gun). But to those who are unable to grasp abstract concepts, God is with a human face etc (Sa-gun). God in core Hinduism or 'Brahman' according to Vedanta is neither male nor female, is without any attributes, formless and not easily conceivable as our senses and mind have limitations. Yet in India, God is in myriad forms. Why? experts speak on the God variety in india.... About the seeming multiplicity in India's Godzone, a modern author and professor from the University of Wales College, Newport - Prof. Jeaneane Fowler writes in her book ' Hinduism: Beliefs & Practices' that The relationship between the many manifest deities and the unmanifest Brahman is rather like that between the sun and its rays. We cannot experience the sun itself but we can experience its rays and the qualities, which those rays have. And, although the suns rays are many, ultimately, there is only one source, one sun. So the Gods and Goddesses of Hinduism amount to thousands, all representing the many aspects of Brahman. The very learned monk Swami Vivekananda spoke, "The Hindus have associated the idea of holiness, purity, truth, omnipresence, and such other ideas with different images and forms. The whole religion of the Hindu is centered in realisation. Man is to become divine by realising the divine. Idols or temples or books are only the supports, the helps, of his spiritual childhood: but on and on he must progress". Many Gods therefore seems to imply the many manifestations of the one divine power just like the different gold ornaments have 'gold' as the one common cause. Gold ornaments may be many but gold is changeless. Gods are many but the changeless Supreme is one. Who are the go-to guys for the answers? In this modern era of information and reasoning, the baffling questions on Indian religiosity has a better chance of getting a reasoned answer when addressed to the knowers of Vedanta philosophy (also called as Vedantins). Vedantins are known to use reasoning that is likely to satisfy the modern mind. Vedantins tend to have a scientific temper which is found in the teachings of the Upanishads. Upanishads is found in the end ('anta in Sanskrit) portion of the Vedas, hence Veda+anta = Vedanta. In the Upanishads the scholars say that the highest philosophy about reality is coded. The Upanishads are also accepted as the ultimate authority by all the spiritual traditions of India. About the Upanishads, Paul Deussen, a 19th century German Orientalist and Sanskrit scholar and student of the great German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer observed, "Whatever may be the discoveries of the scientific mind, none can dispute the eternal truths propounded by the Upanishads....the Upanishads have tackled every fundamental problem of life. They have given us an intimate account of reality. On the tree of wisdom there is no fairer flower than the Upanishads and no finer fruit than the Vedanta philosophy". The knowledge traditions are thus considered the non-dogmatic source to know Indian spirituality, apart from direct experience of the truth. Jai ambe mata ki Jai. Jai Mata Di. The viewpoint of Religion to modern man has changed in terms of its need and value in his daily life. How then can he continue to benefit from it? What does he lose if he devalues it?
In the past we find that there was a severe emphasis on being ritualistic if one had to be considered to be a religious person. And if you were a religious person you were respected in society. On the other hand, in todays world, people prefer to be more moderate towards religion in terms of how much it influences their daily life. The modern Indian society prefers to be more spiritual rather than religious. What do we mean by that? understanding Spirituality My teacher, Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayanandaji explained the aspects of Religion (Philosophy and Rituals) very beautifully. He used to say, True religion possesses two important limbs, namely, its philosophy and its ritualistic injunctions. Mere ritualism, bereft of philosophy is only superstition, while bare philosophy without ritualistic practices tantamounts to sheer madness. To me, being spiritual means to understand and more importantly live the spirit behind every ritual while performing it. So when modern man wants to be spiritual and not religious, he means he wants to be educated and practically live the values of his religion rather than merely perform the external practices that are suggested by its followers. However, since it is so predominant in our culture to perform rituals, one ends up performing a few of them, even though reluctantly and without understanding. In the Bhagavad Geeta, we hear a wonderful statement of fact, Yo yat Shraddha sa eva saha, meaning, as per ones faith (belief), so one becomes. Our faith in our religion is only seen, when it gives us some tangible benefit. And it apparently does so look at the number of temples we have, it doesnt seem to be enough, does it? We perform these rituals because we want our sufferings to end. Hence, we perform the many poojas, or take on a fast, or do many pilgrimages, follow many superstitions, traditions and customs, (why because so and so said so). Some even would like to go to the astrologer and forecast their future in order to take steps to negate their suffering. But no one asks, did Lord Krishna, Sri Ram, Jesus, and other great beings in human form, who are all worshipped today as God, and who all had the power to see into their future and past, why did they not avoid their quota of suffering while living in this world? rituals and its purpose Hence now, we come to the understanding of these various rituals and its importance. Basically, a ritual has three main purposes. a). It creates a discipline in the mind and strengthen it; b). To acknowledge the many factors which make us capable in achieving our small goals in life; and c). To reminds us of our higher purpose in life and direct us towards it. A ritual should not be done in order to merely fulfill others expectations or for some social recognition. If they are done with that spirit, then we have cheated ourselves of their true benefit. Without performing any rituals such as daily prayers, poojas, study of the scriptures, etc. it is easy to become a slave to the world of circumstances and it is much harder to conquer our own inner weaknesses. Mind you, having stated the importance of performing rituals, we must come to understand that not everyone needs to perform the same rituals either. It all depends on ones temperament, just as everyone must wear clothes but you cant have the attitude, One size fits all or one colours suit all; there needs to be different options which suit every size and shape of wearer. In the same way, for the different shapes and temperaments of mind there are different rituals. Some of us are very focused; others find it hard to sit quietly; and some are very easily affected by their surroundings, etc. It is important that we pick our ritual (daily practice) carefully. It is also important to be respectful towards to form of ritual/worship we undertake; just as one respects the person who sincerely works towards removing our physical ailments. What do we lose if we do not follow the two limbs of religion? If we live an entire life without being spiritual or following any religion but doing noble action alone, it is not that we are bad, or denied access to the next realm, because what happens hereafter is determined by the quality of our actions, but it is just that we would have lived our lives without overcoming some of our core weaknesses which if we had intelligently followed the principles of Religion, we can release ourselves of their shackles here and now. That is how we convert rituals into spiritual is when we act with a vision greater than what is seen. The official trailer of this high-concept thriller was unveiled last week in what has been described as a very eventful evening. The most popular place it can be seen on www.youtube. com through a simple search on Google using the films name. The film, presented by Eros International in association with Next Gen Films, also stars Rajeev Khandelwal and Tena Desae. Directed by Aditya Dutt and produced by Vikiram Rajani, Table No 21 is said to introduce a new genre altogether. The movie was shot mainly in Suva including the city where people got the chance to watch Bollywood right here in Fiji. Fijis Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama announced his 2013 budget with estimated total revenue of FJ$2.1 billion [US$1.2 billion] and a total expenditure of FJ$2.3 billion [US$1.3 billion] which sees an increase of 12 per cent from the total budget of 2012 with an estimated net deficit of FJ$218 million [US$121.7 million] - or 2.8 per cent of GDP. capital expenditure, meaning more money for development projects and initiatives. Inflation is expected to continue to decline during the remaining months of 2012 to around 3.5 per cent. Fijis reserves are at comfortable levels at FJ$1.58 billion [US$882.4 million], sufficient to cover five months of imports of goods and services. Bainimarama also announced an increase in income tax threshold from FJ$15,600 [US$8,712] to FJ$16,000 [US$8,935] and the removal of all personal taxable allowances to facilitate the smooth implementation of the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) Final Tax system from 2013. The new system is expected to promote simplification and efficiency in the administration of PAYE tax in Fiji.

No legalising of sex trade: a-G

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has denied comments made by the acting permanent secretary for Health Dr Josefa Koroivueta of plans to legalize the sex trade, which is included in the Crimes Decree 2009. Sayed-Khaiyum said the statement made by Koroivueta is incorrect and that no amendments to the crimes decree have been approved by cabinet. He said any changes to this decree would require cabinets approval and would only occur after wide community consultations. Koroivueta in his comments to the media said the legalization of sex trade would help stop discrimination again sex workers and prevent the spread of the HIV/AIDS infection. The Crimes Decree passed in 2009, and took effect on 1 February 2010 proposed to penalise prostitutes and their clients. Under the decree, those who solicit money through prostitution are liable for a jail term of six months while people caught hiring prostitutes can get jail terms of up to 12 years. In addition, anybody found operating a brothel, or services which procure prostitution is liable for prosecution with the penalties being harsher when the crime involves people under the age of 18. Also, anyone residing with a prostitute is also liable under the decree. Fijilive

Glamsham reports Paresh Rawal dons the role of Mr Khan who entices Rajeev Khandelwal (Vivaan) and Tena Desae (Siya Agasthi) to play a game on Table No 21. The game has only two rules, one being that you cannot back off and the other rule is If You Lie You Die, which is also the tag line of the film. As simple as it sounds, the trailer reveals a very dark side of the game. Rajeev Khandelwal with his undying charm and the gorgeous Tena Desae are two players

who readily agree to take a chance of playing this game for a whooping amount of FJ$10 million, unaware of the consequences. Paresh Rawal has portrayed many iconic characters in the past, but he has never looked this intimidating and his look further adds to his edgy character. While Rajeev who seems to be victimised is going make many womens heart skip a beat! Tena Desae, whos relatively new, looks extremely confident with the experienced actors. Rachna Lal, Fiji Sun

Suicide bids increase

Fiji's suicide numbers are up almost 200 per cent this year, with 105 people taking their lives compared to 36 last year. Police also reported there were 125 attempted suicides this year compared to 96 last year. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro urged anyone feeling down or depressed to seek help from religious organizations or social groups for assistance and counseling. Naisoro also asked family members to be more understanding and compassionate towards each others problems and situations. Statistics showed a higher number of males have committed suicide than females since 2011, although more women have attempted to commit suicide since last year. Ms Naisoro said suicides were becoming a greater concern for Fiji, and she expressed concern that the holiday season, where people may feel greater pressures, is fast approaching. She cited students as a particularly vulnerable group facing examinations near the years end, and parents have been warned not too place too many expectations on performance in school and to be understanding of their needs. "If people feel that they have no one else to turn to within their family circle, we are urging them to seek help from religious organizations or social groups that can provide some assistance.

Secret to a naturally beautiful skin

Professional Range

he increasingly artificial world that we are living in today, the definition of beauty has gone through a drastic change. It is no more regarded as something that exists in its natural form but rather is a concept that can be easily created through manipulation. Hence, a cosmetic brand endorsing beauty how nature intended it to be comes as a breath of fresh air. As opposed to the mineral-oil based products, Nature's Secrets brings together a range of beauty products, which boast of providing genuine personal care through their natural oils and exotic herbal ingredients. Manufactured by Nature's Beauty Creations (NBC) in Sri Lanka, Nature's Secrets not only maintains the

naturalistic flavour of its skin care products by focusing on authenticity and freshness but also lives up to modern standards by making use of German cosmetic expertise and technical know-how and manufacturing its range under GMP and ISO certifications. The Professional range by Natures Secrets is EU approved and is specially formulated for beauty salons. The Professional range comprises of cleansers, scrubs, toners, face packs and nourishing creams, which cater to all skin types from mature, dry and normal skin to acne/blemished and oily skin. The facial treatment products also include papaya, carrot and neem-turmeric facial washes and moisturising lotions that

easily penetrate into the skin, nourishing it while preventing moisture loss as opposed to a lot of chemical products, which create a barrier against moisture loss. Along with herbal body and face products, Nature's Secrets also covers hair and foot care with hair tonics and oils. Aloe Vera miracle foot cream is one of the best products in the market. The Aloe Vera 94% skin soothing gels are yet another highlight of Nature's Secrets. These gels boast of being the purest Aloe Vera skincare products in the world. The 'Miracle Healer' plant, which is known to enhance skin re-generation, is used effectively to create gels which bring instant relief to the skin after

Be sure the grill rack is scrubbed clean before using. To avoid having food stick to the rack, spray racks with cooking spray (do NOT do this over the fire, though!) It's best to pre-cook thick cuts of meat, as well as ribs and whole turkeys, before you grill them. Be sure to thaw any frozen meat before sticking it on the grill. It'll both cook more evenly and taste better. If you want to avoid a super smokey grill, don't brush on lots of sugary barbecue sauces and marinades throughout the cook time. Save them for the last few minutes. Get some practice in before grilling for a big party or people you want to impress. Just grilling yourself (or a small family) a quick dinner a few times will give you all the practice you need. Bon Appetite!

For that perfect barbecue this summer

A thousand great barbecue tips arent going to do a thing if you can't light the grill. Lighting a charcoal grill, however, is something of an art-- and there are people out there who take it very, very seriously. How to Light a Charcoal Grill: 1. Stock up on the supplies you'll need for a charcoal grill. 2. Check out the instructions that came with your charcoal grill. They might offer you specific tips for your grill. 3. Realize that you're irresponsible and have trashed your charcoal grill instructions, along with all its great barbecue tips. (Oops!) Decide to do it on your own. 4. Stack charcoal (these are called briquettes) in the center of your 5. grill. Try to make them into an even pyramid shape. For every two pounds of charcoal, squirt about 1/2 cup of lighter fluid evenly over the briquettes. (Or follow the directions on the package-- after all, you shouldn't have thrown that away yet.) Let the charcoal sit soaking in the lighting fluid for about a minute. Using a long-nosed butane bbq lighter, light the charcoal. Let the charcoal flame and burn in its pyramid shape for half an hour or so, until the briquettes themselves are coated in white ash. Spread the briquettes over the bottom of the barbecue grill and... get cookin'! (As if I need You've got your grill, you've got your food, and you've got a good heat going on the bbq. Now it's time for the fun part: cooking on the barbecue! Generally, the recipe that you use will come with some barbecue tips and instructions for marinating the meat and all that good stuff. But a lot of recipes don't give and barbecue tips for cook times... they just say "grill til done" or something else equally mystifying. Because if you haven't grilled that often (and I'm betting that's why you're on this page), how can you know when the "done" is supposed to be? Read on for some general barbecue tips, along with a handy barbecue cook time chart for pretty much anything you'd want to cook on the grill.

Her other films include Art in Exile, TIPA, Of Friendship, Films and Swords and The Saint of Chitrakoot. The film focuses on Saroj Khan narrating her slow rise in filmdom from a chorus dancer in the back row. The film opens with Khan in her car, talking into her cell-phone till it cuts to a close-up of the lady at home with walls filled with photographs and portraits of herself and family members. She looks back wistfully to her past that includes episodes on the perpetual sickness of a daughter who passed away later. But Khan refuses to be bogged down by the tragedy; neither does she seek sympathy from others. It has been a long struggle with many ups and downs in my personal life.2 The dances I compose and direct dont show the tears and the heartbreaks in my life, Khan says. She was betrayed in love by her mentor and guru who left her when she became pregnant. She carried the emotional, financial and professional burden singly on her bold shoulders and continues to do so till today. Khans repertoire of having choreographed in more than 200 films ranges from the purely classical numbers in the Tamil film Shringaram Dance of Love (2005), the graceful numbers executed by Aishwarya Rai in Subhash Ghais Taal, to the sizzling duet performed by the lead pair in Rowdy Rathore (2012). Shringaram was directed by noted dancer Saradha Ramanathan, produced by Padmini Ravi, a classical dancer and was a period film set in the 19th Century on the life of a devadasi. She is far from a beauty. She does not care about glamour and is never one to make a fashion statement. She is brazen, bold, uncompromising and often, quite rude and ruthless. She has been a single mother for most of her life. But she is also famous, successful and rich in the cut-throat, male-dominated world of Indian cinema. That is Saroj Khan, Bollywoodss prima donna of choreography which Nidhi Tulis 57-minute celluloid tribute The Saroj Khan Story profiles. Never before in the history of Indian cinema has a tribute been paid to a choreographer in a documentary form. Khan emerged as child artist with exceptional dancing talent from a humble beginning in the early 1950s. Eventually she was present, in each decade of Hindi cinema, first as a background dancer, then as an assistant teaching intricate steps to heroines , from Vyjyanthimala

to twinkle-toed Madhuri Dixit. The legendary choreographer continued to the next generation stars like Aishwarya Rai, Kareena Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha. The Saroj Khan Story began as a search for the genius behind one of the greatest choreographers Indian cinema has ever produced. What surfaces is a deeply personal story of determination, passion, extraordinary skill and the sheer will to survive that is both intimate and inspiring, reveals director Tuli, adding, I was a fan like most people who know about her choreography, but it was during the making of the film that I discovered that shes a genius but wears it lightly. She is a perfectionist and a very passionate dancer. Tuli did her Masters in feature film screenwriting from the Royal Holloway, University of London, under the Charles Wallace India trust

tional awards. Tuli says that the idea of making a film on Khan struck her after seeing her on the dance reality show Nach Baliye in 2007/08. She was a judge on the show. When a couple danced on the Madhumati number, daiya re daiya chad gaya paapi bichua, she said jab yeh gaana filmaya ja raha tha tab main peechay dancer thi (when this song umber was getting filmed I was in the background). The words stayed with me. My immediate thought was, this legendary choreographer was once a background dancer and wished to explore the journey that brought her where she is today, she says. When Tuli approached Khan she agreed instantly but without showing any excitement. I realised that it didnt really matter to her whether I make the film on her or not. She is at a point in her life where she doesnt expect anything from anyone (as she says in the film). She didn't think my film would benefit her or harm her. She was fine either way, sums up Tuli. This spirit carries over in the film. Reminiscing over some of the numbers she has choreographed, Khan reveals, The Madhuri Dixit number on the song maar dala in Sanjay Leela Bhansalis Devdas (2002) had the refrain maar dala four times in each stanza. I convinced and taught Madhuri to execute the refrain differently each time. And she expressed this beautifully. This choreography got for Khan the National Award preceded by another National Award for the dance numbers in Hemant Gowarikars Lagaan (2001) alongside the Filmfare Award. One similar milestone is Bhansalis Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam which brought her a string of awards which also got her the Best American Choreography Award. And the work goes on. Shoma A. Internationally acclaimed director Meera Nair said her latest film, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, is her most ambitious project yet. The Reluctant Fundamentalist, which was the closing movie at the 43rd International Film Festival of India, is based on a 2007 bestseller of the same name by Pakistani writer Mohsin Hamid. A brilliant exploration of bias and the phenomenon of globalization, the film is about a Pakistani Princeton graduate who is torn between his American dream and the call of his homeland. Its sense of nothing being completely what it seems comes across in an unsettling manner from the characters divided selves, or through the locations, which see Atlanta standing in for New York, and Delhi substituting for Lahore and Istanbul. It is how We, East and West, see each other, said Nair about the film. The Reluctant Fundamentalist is made with an international cast and crew of Hollywood, Indian and Pakistani actors, depicts two very different worlds coming together through dialogue. It took three years to adapt the novel into a screenplay and was shot across four continents. The movie is a comment on what is going on in the world today. We discuss two very important forms of fundamentalism - that of the capitalists and that of terrorists, Nair said.

Dev Anands statue to be unveiled in Mumbai

A statue of late Hindi cinema icon Dev Anand was unveiled at the Bandra Bandstand Promenade here on the actors first death anniversary Dec 3. The statue will be unveiled as part of UTV Stars property Walk of the Stars here, and it will join the statues of Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor. Remembered as Bollywoods evergreen hero, Dev Anand died of cardiac arrest last year in London. He was 88. His life-size statue in brass will be unveiled by yesteryear actress Waheeda Rahman, who made her debut opposite Dev Anand in the 1956 film C.I.D.. Together, they featured in seven movies. Dev Anand started his career in the black-and-white era with 1946 film Hum Ek Hain, and spent 65 years as an actor and filmmaker in Bollywood. He left an indelible mark in the minds of movie buffs with classics like Baazi, Paying Guest, Guide, Jewel Thief and Hare Rama Hare Krishna. The property, akin to the worldfamous Hollywood Walk of Fame, was launched earlier this year with the felicitation of the legendary Kapoor family, by actress Kareena Kapoor and director Madhur Bhandarkar. The Walk of the Stars features film celebrities handprints on customised slabs, and brass statues of iconic actors.

Nairs debut film Salam Bombay was nominated at the US Academy Awards for best foreign language film in 1988. Her other acclaimed films are Mississipi Masala, Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake, New York, I Love You.

Nair is the founder of Maisha, a centre in Kampala, Uganda, that provides film labs and workshops for aspiring screen-writers, directors, actors, technicians, and documentary makers from Africa.

Yash Raj Films to produce hindi remake of Tamil Shekhar Kapurs Paani
horror hit Pizza
Acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has finally found a producer for his long-pending, ambitious project Paani in the well-known banner Yash Raj Films. He says it is a perfect association. I have been preparing for this film for a long time, but always wanted an Indian partner that has the same passion for the film as I do and in Adi (Aditya Chopra), I have finally found that, Kapur said in a statement. It is a huge production that demands futuristic sets and large action pieces. With YRF, I have found a perfect home for Paani, he added. The film is based in a future world where wars over water have broken out. Water is now owned by international corporations who use thirst as a weapon of control. In one such future city, a young love story breaks all the rules and in the ensuing war, water flows back to its people. Paani is said to have a strong Indian and western cast, headed by a young leading actor from India and a young leading actress from the west, the statement read. It was reported that Hrithik Roshan will essay the male lead. But no confir-

Bollywood filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar, known for his movie Shaitan, has bought the Hindi remake rights of Tamil horror-thriller Pizza. He will only produce the film. I have bought the Hindi remake rights of Pizza, but I wont direct it. I intend to produce the film under my banner Getaway Films. We are in the process of zeroing in on the cast and director. Once we are done with all that, Ill make the official announcement, Nambiar said. Pizza, which was made at a shoe-

string budget, was the recent surprise hit in Tamil. It revolves around a pizza delivery boy, played by Vijay Sethupathi, whose life undergoes dramatic changes during on one of his home delivery trips. The film, which raked in Rs.1.85 crore in its first two weeks, was also picked up for a Telugu version by Suresh Kondeti. Out of 13 Tamil films released in October, Pizza, which was directed by Karthik Subbaraj, evolved as the sole winner at the box-office.

mation has been made on that front. The movie, which will go on floors mid-2013, will be shot in India

D I A R Y
Ranveer keen to turn director
Actor Ranveer Singh may be only two films old in Bollywood but he has already decided he wants to go behind the camera one day. Actor Irrfan, who played the role of Pi Patel in Ang Lees Life of Pi, is excited about the response the film has received. He calls it a great sign for the Indian film industry. (The) way our audience has absorbed and embraced the complexity and simplicity of Life Of Pi with such eagerness, it is a great sign for our film industry! Jai ho! Irrfan tweeted. This new audience is going to hugely affect our filmmaking, we are going to see a diverse and dynamic film industry. Thanks to all film lovers, he added. Life Of Pi, based on Yann Martels Booker Prize-winning novel of the same name, features debutant Suraj Sharma, Tabu and Irrfan in prominent roles. It narrates the tale of a boy who is adrift at sea in a lifeboat with a Royal Bengal tiger after his family is drowned in a shipwreck.

The day i cant do my own stunts, ill stop doing action films
Akshay Kumar on his comeback as the Khiladi with Khiladi 786 and the pressure of winning races in his sons school. Sreya Basu catches up with the actor
As far as we know, you said you will never do a Khiladi film again. Then how did Khiladi 786 happen? Khiladi (1992) turned out to be a huge hit. Then one film after the other were made using Khiladi in the titles and the franchise became massively successful. I even did a television reality show called Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi. And now its Khiladi 786. I feel very good as I actually thought I might not be able to do it again as the whole idea was that I had stopped doing any kind of Khiladi series. So, can we say its your comeback film in a way? Yes, you can very well call it my comeback film for Khiladi. I am doing a Khiladi film after a gap of 12 years the last one was Khiladi 420 (in 2000). I hope everyone enjoys it. Is the film a remake? Not at all. Khiladi 786 is not a remake it is an original story. Its a film full of Bollywood masala for the family audience. Your company Hari Om Entertainment is one of the producers of the film. So is it an added pressure? Yes it is. An actor has responsibility towards all his films. More so, when you are producing it you make the film, sell it there are distributors, exhibitors to be addressed to. It is a big responsibility to make sure the film runs well and earns profit. Do you believe in numerology this is your eighth Khiladi film and that too have a sacred number in the title? I dont know about numerology, I do believe in luck. Its 70 percent luck and 30 percent hard work. Its a strange calculation, but this is what worked for me. Can you share one incident when the luck factor changed your life? Luck is what has made me who I am. During my struggling days, I got an ad to shoot. It was my first assignment and I was asked to get ready to go for shooting in Bangalore. The flight was at 6.30 am but I got the time wrong and thought it was at 6.30 in the evening. I still remember he said I am too unprofessional and I will never make it to the (modelling) industry. I begged to him, cried, but he went away. You have no idea how disheartened I was. Then, that very day I was roaming around at Natraj Studio (Mumbai) with my photographs when a make-up man saw them and took me to Pramod Chakravorty saab. He told me I liked your photos very much and I would like to sign you for a film. I got my first cheque of Rs 5001 at 6.30 pm that very day. You seem to be a Khiladi off-screen too; not only you take part in all the races in your sons (Aaravs) school, but even win them. I have no choice because my wife (Twinkle Khanna) is a very competitive woman. Every time before a race, she tells me if you come second I will greet you very well back home. And I get the message and have to give all my strength to win the race. What worries me is that when my daughter (Nitara), who is just a couple of months old now, will grow up and go to school, I will be 50-52 years old. And then, I will have to again run races with parents who will be in their 30s. And as usual, my wife will push me to win, and it will be a good challenge for me. Out of your busy schedule how much time are you able to spend with your daughter? As much I can make. I rush back home to her as soon as my shooting or press conferences or other commitments are over.

Will Sonam star in the Indian 24?

Hopefully, I will direct a film some day and I will pay tribute to some of my idols who have been actor-directors, the 27-year-old said. Ranveer made the remark especially in the context of actor Aamir Khan, who is also a producer and turned director with Taare Zameen Par. Meanwhile, Ranveer is sporting a new look. He has a moustache for the film Ram Leela. Asked if he has been receiving compliments for it, he said: Best compliment, girls say, You look cute. Being directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ram Leela stars Deepika Padukone opposite him.

Success of Life of Pi a great sign for Indian film industry, feels Irrfan

Is it a coincidence that your latest two films (OMG: Oh My God! and Khiladi 786) have divine titles? Yes it is. Because, there was a message in OMG but Khiladi 786 is purely an entertaining film. Here when my character says he has 786 in his hands, he means he has Bismillah written in his palms, that is, he is speaking about believing in your own self. Actor Anil Kapoor, who is set to bring the Indian adaption of award-winning American TV series 24 to the small screen, says he is willing to cast daughter Sonam Kapoor if there is a role for her. If there is a character which suits Sonam or Sonam thinks will suit her, then why not? We will definitely pitch, these days we have to talk to Sonams managers, the 52-year-old said at the launch of 24. 24 is an American television series that started in 2001 and ran till 2010, with a total of 192 episodes. Anil featured in the eighth season of the show as Omar Hassan, president of the fictional Islamic Republic of Kamistan. Meanwhile, when asked about his personal favourite television show, he said, "I liked 'Buniyaad', which was directed by Ramesh Sippy ji. I loved that." We have seen you in an action mode in Rowdy Rathore too. How is Khiladi 786 different? Rowdy Rathore was a different kind of action. Khiladi 786 has elements typical to its franchise. If you have to share the Khiladi title with some other actor in Bollywood, who will that be? I would give away this title after about 24 years to my son (Aarav). When you started with the Khiladi series, you were new in the industry. Now you are one of the top actors in Bollywood. Are you still passionate about doing your own stunts? I have always done my stunts on my own I have never allowed anybody to do them for me. The day I wont be able to do my stunts, I will stop working in action films.

Singing along with

Carly
cially impresses with a delightful display of versatility, crooning numbers ranging from the zingy Take That Look Off Your Face, where she adds as much attitude and retaliation as vulnerability in Its Not the End of the World. Apart from Carlys performance though, the main draw of Tell Me on a Sunday remained the music and lyrics. Boasting of having some of the best songs by Lloyd Webber, Tell Me... is among his most intense musicals. And as much as its subject has often been termed as running the risk of lacking mass appeal, its hard not to relate to the lead characters journey of loss and hope, a theme that certainly has universal resonance. In addition, Don Blacks simple yet meaningful lyrics provide the required accessibility to the songs. Also, director David Coddington refrains from making his adaptation melodramatic. Unlike many of the earlier productions, he keeps the proceedings straight forward and has a minimalistic approach towards the production value too. Thus, the focus never deviates from the central character. For Carly Binding fans, this was a good chance to get up-close with their favourite popstar and see her do what she does best along with adding a whole new dimension to her personality. Director: David Coddington Starring: Carly Binding Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber Lyrics: Don Black

ome know her as the original Popstar of reality television while some list her among the most popular voices of New Zealand. But just recently, Carly Binding appeared in a brand new role: a musical theatre artiste. The pop singer-songwriters lead debut in musical theatre with Andrew Lloyd Webbers 1980s one-woman musical Tell Me on a Sunday unveiled a side to her that not many must have imagined existed, that of a true-blue actress. An actress, who can fabulously emote through her voice and who can hold together an entire show without much support except for Lloyd Webbers soothing compositions and Don Blacks emotionally driven lyrics of course. So as we heard Carlys voice reign the little stage at Q Theatres Loft this month and saw her move swiftly on stage, slipping smoothly into a dozen costumes in full view of the audience... her expressions perfectly in-sync while hitting the high-low notes... we wondered if this pop artiste could have asked for a better comeback after being away from the limelight all these years. With the story of a girl, whose poor luck with love takes her through a string of unsuccessful romantic liaisons from UK to USA, Carly returns as quite a package. With Tell Me on a Sunday, she not only pushes her ability as a singer but also establishes an engaging stage presence. You can hardly take eyes off her during the hour she is on stage and espe-
