Letter from the Department of Human Services.

Dear Atticus thank you for your email. Your project and questions are really interesting and I hope you find the answers helpful. What would you do if you stopped getting support? The Department of Human Services is funded by the State government - so I don't think there will be a time when the department is not funded to provide programs for vulnerable children and their families. Child protection functions in a statutory environment - this means that there are particular laws that have been made to ensure children's safety whilst in the care of their parents and allows child protection workers to work with families to ensure the safety of their children. The department will always be funded to carry out its functions to ensure the safety and well being of children and young people at risk of harm. You may already know that child protection deals with the most serious cases of child abuse and neglect - sometimes this means that children and young people need to live with another family as they are not safe or protected from harm. How could you improve your service? This is a very good questions as the role and functions of child protection are undergoing a lot of change to improve the lives of vulnerable children. Child protection has undergone many reviews - often instigated by an organisation called Ombudsman Victoria. This organisation is also funded by the state government and acts like a sort of watchdog of all government services. If there are concerns about how one department is performing its functions that will have a serious and ongoing impact, they will investigate and make recommendations to the state government. Because of all the reviews child protection has undergone a new model way of working and operating model of child protection will commence in the next few weeks - it includes child protection workers working more closely with families and having increased support from senior colleagues. When did child protection start? Well, this is going to be a big answer - so I have attached some information that I think help explains it all! All the best with your project - and have fun at school. Kind regards Lisa
